  • Take a hike with me for the full scary part of Angel's Landing in Zion National Park, Utah.
    Welcome to Walk The Parks! Please SUBSCRIBE and LIKE if you found this video useful. Would love to hear any additional feedback as well!
    Angel's Landing is famous because of its high exposure, and long lengths of chains that are utilized to climb to the top of this beautiful desert summit. This video takes you on a real time hike form Scout's Lookout to the Summit of Angel's Landing. Many people find this hike very scary because of how close you end up near thousand foot drops throughout the hike.
    Zion National Park is an amazing place with several famous hikes. It's debatable which is the most famous: Angel's Landing or Zion Narrows?
    A permit is required for this hike. You can check out recreation.gov to see all the details.
    This hike is 5.4 miles roundtrip with a total elevation gain of 1,500 feet.
    The park service estimates that most hikers will take about 4 hours to complete this hike. I'd recommend giving yourself more time than that. Even if you're fit you can run into a lot of people on the narrow trail that can slow you down fairly significantly.
    This hike is a bit scary, with all of its chains and exposure, but it's also absolutely stunningly beautiful!
    Always remember to LEAVE NO TRACE! Leave only footprints, Take only pictures. Pack it in and pack it out.

    I spent many days exploring this park in the 70’s as a young man. My father owned land in Hay canyon, and we could hike south from there into the canyon In those days. there was often times when I would rarely see another person. There were few rules, no permits (at least I was ever aware of), and it seemed at times like we had the whole place to ourselves. It was magical. I’m older now, and cannot move like I used to, but that place still haunts my memories and dreams. It gets into your bones.

      Totally agree about the vicarious viewing! We made it as far as Scout’s Landing, but once the chains began and I could see the literally breathtaking drops on either side I knew I had had enough. Still, I have always wondered what was ahead and now I know. Thank you!

    This hike/climb is way too scary for me to attempt, so I very much enjoyed being taken along. I like the normal speed filming. I didn't mind waiting with you behind people, mainly because I knew none of them fell! The hikers didn't all look as though they were up to this challenge.
    I particularly noticed the trees that manage to hang on by their elegant roots. They seem to thrive. It can't be easy living up there, considering the radical climate variables they endure. They sure are beautiful.

    I’m 66 now, and have been to the top 5 times. My last hike to the top I knew would be my last on account of many injuries incurred while growing up. My body now broken, (56 bones broken while growing up, YES, 56!) I am paying for some incredibly stupid stuff. However, my point? Your video took me back and I appreciate you taking the time to post. Note: the last time I went up, I took my wonderful wife to be up with me. She did not tell me she was terrified of heights. But conquered the climb like a champ! Wonderful memories! Beautiful park! My fave of all time!

    I’m from MN and I’ve been to Zion but never on this hike to Angels. Thank you for the video because I would never make it to the top. Between the 1/4 and 1/2 way part of your hike I got so scared, but I watched you hike to the top. When I was younger this would have been a piece of cake but you’ll find as you age that heights won’t agree with you. Human stamina, agility, and balance all decline. I use to be furiously energetic - swimming, jogging, skating, hiking, climbing, - always on the go. At 75 I have slowed down considerably. That is why I thank you so much for your video. I’d never be able to make it to the top. I am sincerely appreciative. It was awe inspiring.

      I too went to Zion in the '70s, and did not do this hike, since my son was only about 7 and my wife wasn't very enthusiastic about hiking. We did go to the narrows along the Virgin river, and I still enjoy looking at the photos I took there. Angels Landing reminds me a bit of Seneca Rocks WV, where I did some climbing in my younger days, although it's on a much smaller scale. I'm also 75, and I'll agree that you lose the taste for exposure as you age- I guess the growing awareness of mortality makes you more careful and less likely to take risks. But I do look back fondly at my adventures in the mountains, and I feel sorry for those who reach our age without those kind of memories.

    Zion is my favorite National Park. I've been there 3 times. The first time was in 2004 and it was no where near as crowed as it is today. My son and I hiked the narrows on that trip and my son hiked Angels Landing by himself while I relaxed at the pool in our hotel. I really enjoyed this video because in 2012 I was misdiagnosed and as a result I was in a coma for over a month and the doctors ruined my airway so now I can only walk with oxygen. I could never make it up to Angels Landing now but through your video I got to see it like I was actually there. I can only go on very short hikes now and try to do as much as I can but I have to go very slow. My boyfriend and I have a camper and we travel all over the country to the National Parks. My son often flies to meet us on some of our far away trips. We so enjoyed camping at Zion in Watchman Campground 2 years ago and waking up in the morning to the awesome views. I am 70 years old now and still love to visit the National Parks and hike as much as I am able to. We will return to Zion again as we both just love the beauty of this park.

    I’m terrified of heights, but I was able to hike angels landing last week……….in the snow! I definitely don’t recommend it for novice hikers, whenever there’s snow or ice. Luckily, my gf and I purchased traction spikes or else it wouldn’t have been possible. The plus to doing it in February is that there’s barely any people. We didn’t feel rushed and was able to do it at our own pace. This was a great video and it helped ease my mind going into the hike. I came back to rewatch because it’s crazy the difference angels landing is when you can actually see where you’re stepping haha. Thanks for the video!

I love the National Parks of America and hope to visit some in the future (probably starting with Sequoia as I love the forest environment). I am somewhat acrophobic. I did le Tour du Mont Blanc (France, to Italy, to Switzerland) Trek in Sept 2012. Over 100 miles in 11 days, UP, and DOWN over mountain passes. I had trepidation over doing "The Ladders" up to Lac Blanc. But, after the First pair of ladders (MAJOR Exposure), I gutted it out.
    Eight months later, (same) buddy and I overnight-backpacked 'The Narrows' of Zion. In places, the water was up to our chests (we had Dry-bags, in our backpacks). It was Awesome. But instead of traditional hiking poles, we used thick wooden dowels to negotiate the stream bed. Because the Boulders and Cobbles, therein, were like Greased Bowling Balls !
    At NO POINT did Angel's Landing come up in our conversation. XD

Would absolutely look forward to a non commentary version with the natural environmental sounds (that's part and parcel why people go to these sort of places in the first place ^^ not just the views ^^ but the whole 'atmosphere')

    So funny to see the looks on people's faces. You can almost hear them thinking, " Goddamn, this fool is running up the mountain!!!" You seem to pass everyone so fast, like they were standing still.

    Been watching hikes to Half Dome and will TRY TO endure your video, but even watching this on my iPad, having breakfast, makes the adrenaline lives rise to 200%.
    However, for anyone with steady feet and a passion for adventure, I guess this is AWSOME!
    Even with my height anxiety, I still can enjoy the views.
    PS. We walked the creak for a few yards though.

    I first did this hike in 1977, last (with much creakier knees) in 2018. the hike itself and the chains are not too bad but watch out for some of the other climbers. Some should absolutely not attempt but do anyway, slowing everyone down. The worst obstacles are the relatively few completely tone deaf climbers who don't notice others and don't care about others. They are relatively few but a big problem since they won't let go of the chains so others can go by, It is a beautiful hike and worth the effort but try to go when crowds are relatively low.

    • @WalkTheParks
      @WalkTheParks  4 місяці тому

      Certainly is an amazing hike! I agree that all hikers should try to be as aware of others as possible.

      Everyone has their own pace and level of acceptance for heights. I felt each pass was safe and careful. It's not a competition, but we should all go our own pace.

    I always look at hikes like this one as a bit of a head trip. Have a walk along a curb, and it’s cake; but put that curb 100 feet in the air and it becomes insurmountable. It’s about confidence in one’s abilities, and overcoming the notion that you’re going to make a mistake. I’ve never hiked this trail but have tackled other grade 3 and 4 hikes. I get the fear factor, but that place reminds me a lot of the Hillary step, lol. Too much reliance on ropes (chains in this case) and not enough on one’s own abilities to negotiate the trail. That guy pulling himself up by the chain, scares me more than the whole rest of the video, to be fair. Beautiful place, and an entertaining video. Thank you.

    • @WalkTheParks
      @WalkTheParks  4 місяці тому

      I agree: while the chains are nice and probably necessary for how many people do this hike, I certainly wouldn't rely 100% on them and literally use them to climb up the peak!

    Very cool! I've been to the top about 15 years ago. I don't remember nearly as many chains, but I could be wrong. The real steep parts going up the side slopes they had them for sure and other riskier parts like the spot that's about 2 feet wide. I want to go back for sure.

    I watch a video of this climb about once per year. I’m taking a lengthy trip out West and plan to do this. I’m not a backpacker, a climber or a hiker but I do like interesting walks to some places and this looks challenging for me. I’m not afraid of heights either. I bought a heavy piece of webbing to knot 🪢 around my waist and a large, heavy duty spring loaded carabiner rated to hold several people. I will only have a lightweight water pack and very grippy shoes 🥾. I figure that’s the most I can do and should be ok in case I slip. Nice video. I dread the climb down 🙁. 👍☮️🌞🏜️🪨🥾

    Thank u for sharing this experience! Planning to go to Utah to experience the Mighty 5 in fall 2024. Two questions: what time of the day did you start this hike( I’m assuming early morning to avoid the crowds) and how early in the year can you apply for permit for September/October months?

    • @WalkTheParks
      @WalkTheParks  4 місяці тому +1

      I would definitely recommend starting as early as you can so you’re not rushed and can enjoy all of the amazing views! There are two separate permit systems: you can try to get a permit the day before your hike or months in advance. Both are lotteries and both can be obtained via recreation.gov Go there and search for Angels Landing and you’ll be on your way! Good luck and enjoy!

    What i would say is, a majestic place like this deserves a 4k upload.

      No good excuse for no 4k. Some say that most do not have high enough internet speeds or display resolutions to fully support 4k still... I just went for 1080 as 4k took up too much space for the setup I used to film this. Cheers!

      It was shot on an iPhone with the wide lens. Honestly, I don't think most of the footage shows enough of the exposure at certain parts. For some, this hike is quite easy, but for most it's a real test of fitness and exposure tolerance.
