22 Mag Bullet Drop - Demonstrated and Explained
I carry a 22 mag on my 4 wheeler for all my chores on the farm. The handiest round ever made.
As a lover of the .22 WMR, I have a couple of suggestions for the readers of this post. The first one is that as with every rimfire ammo you have to find the round that your rifle handles properly. This means that tests have proved that the rifles including rifles being from the same manufacturers and models prefer different brands, weights and designs of bullets. My actual .22 WMR rifle is a Savage Mod. 93 bought years ago to replace an ancient Marlin. This Marlin was good enough to hunt in distances up to 90 - 100 yards making heads shots on small game and turkeys with CCI maximax 40 gr. HP... When I bring in the Savage I try to use the same ammo but at 100 yards the groups average 4.5 inches... After testing around 8 or 9 different brands of ammo, was clear that the only one I can use expecting groups below 1 inch was the 40 gr. Winchester Super X JHP. After some adjusting to the scope, I obtain a rifle ready to shoot 1.5 groups at 120 yards. This is not free advertising for Winchester... Maybe in your rifle it won't perform this way... Another point, due to the loss of speed in the bullet and its low weight, on too windy days do not spect miracles... Anything over 120 yards will be treated with a Savage 110 Classic in .243. Let us be real, .22 WMR is a wonderful cartridge, economic, the rifle is very light... But " a man has to know its limitations"... Remember this quote ???
Great post Oscar. All my testing $$$ if I bench rest with my Weirauch best group is 1" at 150m with Horny 30gn . LOVE my wmr
uncle had a Anschütz 1516 and he shoot Winchester Super-X 40gr. (perhaps the old original ones ?)
Still have a Savage 4M in 22 magnum. Killed deer, coyotes, squirrels and grouse with it. Bought it in 1978 for 40 bucks.
You shot deer with it ? What state you live in bro. You'd lose your licence and gun for good here in SD if you shot deer with .22 mag
@@williespoonemore3392 he lives in the don't ask, don't tell state :)
17hmr does a great on deer too
@@williespoonemore3392 nc u can use whatever
@Willie Spoonemore he said in 1978 back then my uncle was shooting deer with .22lr
I love being being able to see the round in the playback footage at 200 yards
I love my .22WMR so much I’ve made it my primary shooter at the range. I also fell in love with the Savage 93 I just put a .17HMR on layaway for Christmas. These little rimfire magnums stole my heart for target shooting and pest control
I got the Kel Tek CMR 30 carbine a couple years ago and holy crap this thing is accurate. Trust the old man, try these Fiocchi 40 JSP rounds at 1910 fps. Now I did put the fake suppressor (barrel shroud) on the carbine and bought several manufacturers ammunitions to start out with. The Fiocchi was one hole at 25 yds, one hole at 50 yards, and moa at 100 yards! All day long. Now I put the Arken Zulus on there and This is my favorite toy in the safe period!
That first three shot group @ 100 yards with the Norma showed excellent accuracy. Shows you don't have to spend crazy money to have an accurate 22 Magnum. I have my CZ sighted in to be dead on at 100 yards as that's as far as I will use it on rabbits and foxes. At 200 yards I'll choose the .223. Great video again and thanks for sharing Adam!
Who doesn't love some 22lr and 22 mag..can't go wrong with either
I love this cartridge! Awesome to see more offerings in .22wmr -on a side note thanks for directing me to Norma’s site. It’s been a window I haven’t closed since lol
Good comparison, whotee.
I had a .22 Mag back in the day, mostly for groundhogs. My best shot was rolling a running gh at about 50 yards. Sold it ( Mossberg) to a friend about 30 years ago who had to have it...
I just landed on this older video of yours because we got the boy a Savage 93 for Christmas and I wanted to see what all you were doing with yours. Great video and now I am more aware of the limitations of the 93.22 magnum. Thanks for the "new" content!
Thanks for watching!
I was shooting out to 200 yards with a .22 Long Rifle Ruger Charger with using CCI Mini Mags and was having to aim about 3’ above a steel siloughette to get a ring.
I am another person that is really enjoying this video series. Always good information to know. Gives people a definite starting point with the same caliber and similar setups.
🙏🙏🙏
Thanks, that was a eye opener, I quit using any cartridges in the 22's since I bought my first CCI in the mid to late sixties. I have found that they seem to work, and don't really care whiter I am shooting them out of semi auto pistols or lever or bolt action rifles. I just trust CCI!!! Thanks again!!! Tie
I fell in love with a Marlin bolt action .22 mag while stationed in N.C. back in the early 80's and not long after then I bought a couple Ruger 77/22s in. 22 mag which are awesome shooters. 9:49
Thanks Adam, 22 mag in a Savage good. Only. 22 mag I have is my Pmr-30. Also works and fun. Thanks crazy that you can see bullet hit at 200yrds
Bought a model 93 heavy barrel this past Xmas in WMR. Though this round has been around since 1959 had never had experience. It's really enjoyable to shoot very accurate yet wish it was a little cheaper for ammo.
I love .22 Mag. I have Kel-Tec's matched set, & a Marlin 925.
Love your videos man. I have that same .22 mag, got a little 2-7 Vortex crossfire on it. Great little rigs, mine really like the CCI TNT Green 30grn JHP. Works out great since we gotta be lead free hunting here in CA, plugs jack rabbits well.
Thats a nice rifle. I wanted to say i got one also, marlin 983ss got it from Kmart back in the days $100 or so been so long. I did a custom titanium bolt knob using anarchy outdoors. Took a grinder and grind the knob off and threaded to standard 5/16x24 big improvement over the stock knob.
To my understanding the WMR Dynapoint with its copper washed bullet (compared to the jacketed bullets of the other two) is designed to closely mimic the old .22 WRF load which is not as 'hot' as normal WMR so it won't tear small game up as much as regular WMR might.
Interesting the drop an grouping and also the sound barrier at 100to200yd wow all 3 fooled me buddy. Thank u.
I'm trying "Long range" with my Daisy pump pellet gun. I've successfully reached 100 yards. 30" drop using a 7.9 gr. pellet getting a 7" group on a 14" target. Plan is to walk it back until I run out of scope then convince the wife I need something better or cannot viably reach the target any longer. Wish me luck!
Good shootin
@@WHOTEEWHO Thank you sir. Will keep you updated on my journey!
Lol, convince on the merits of energy on target for a more humane dispatch, also, much less wind deflection for more accuracy at distance.
I have very good accuracy at distance with cci 40gr game point they can shoot a 6 inch group at 350 yds
230 feet of drop at a 1000 yards! I think we just discovered the next 6.5
LOL
Gosh I loved plinking with my .22mag. Mossberg 640KD Chuckster. Terrible name great rifle.
try the Remington accu-tips 33gr. highest ballistic coefficient of any 22 wmr round
In my country it is hard to get a rifle license...official would have you up and down...with no results. Blessing and keep the videos coming.
The drop could be wrong on the cci because you were sighted with the Norma at 100 and not the cci
I shoot the 22lr at distances up to around 250 yds pretty regularly for fun. Was interested in getting a 22mag just haven't done so with the ammo scarcity we had lately. The long rifle drops around 40 inches at 200 and if I do my part will group inside of a pie plate with Winchester aammo(not match stuff) The mag has significant more power at that distances but not enough aerodynamics to perform like the .17s .Good shooting on your part there, about as good as the rimfires are capable unless match rifle and ammo.thanks
You go past 100 yards you need a 17 hmr. What I like about the 22 mag is it’s cheap, we’ll use to be cheap. And most people don’t realize, it has very close energy to a 9x19. I have a 22 mag in a bulpup. Makes for a compact close quarters little hammer.
.22 mag bullpup? Sounds interesting!
I don't understand the difference in drop between the Norma & the CCI but initially your scope was off, you were hitting right, so everything off to the right makes sense. In
.22 LR I always shoot 40 grains. In .22 WMR I always shoot 30 grains. In .17 HMR I always shoot 20 grains..
but that's just me. Keep up the great work!
When used for what it's intended..... at and under 150 yards, it's a fine cartridge.
It's interesting that the Winchester's didn't hit paper. I might have to try that at the house to see how far they really drop. Good vid...
Great video, I learnt a lot, and now what to expect from my 22WMR’s
The video thumbnail showing .22WMR looks impressive. Good job.
It looks to me like your rifle set ups sight height, which is center of bore line to center of sight line is more like 2.25 inches and the data on the drop chart is based on 1.5 inches, a data field that you can alter. Not sure if that equates differently, but it also makes me wonder if you shot the maxi mags @ 100, like the Norma you zeroed in with, would it have been high? It's funny to me that every time we search for info or data, we are left with more real questions than answers lol, and I think this is partially because the results are often nothing like we expected. Fun video!
My marlin XT-22 mag loves the CCI and so do I. Winchester boolots not so much. Interesting how the bullet takes a dive at 200+ yards. Another awesome video. Thanks Got a chuckle at the background noise at your home. Lol.
I had a winchester .22 mag case blow out the side of the rim and screw up my semi auto remington. I was able to fix the rifle and I don't use those winchester rounds any longer. They were some kind of light weight bullet that was supposed to be a super round. They were special all right, it caused small pieces of the bolt to fly all over the place.
Same rifle just did a quick sight in at 25 yards 3/8" groups. got dark so test at 50 yards next time out, was using federal .22wmr 50 grain. bulk pack Lots of wind hear so wanted the heaver bullets. 6 power scope .
Well, this explains a lot. My 22 mag is zeroed at 100. Shot a yote a couple weeks ago at about 200 yards. Held at the top of the shoulder and got it in the middle of the front leg. Shot again when he was at about 250 and missed all together.
That was cool watching that bullet flying in from the right side, right before it hit the target. 👍🏼
Awesome video WTW! Been waiting on this one brother!🤘🏽
Always appreciate you watching
I want to say, I appreciate this series of videos, WTW
Appreciate you watching
I just picked up a Savage Model 93 FV (same rifle - heavy varmint bbl.). Straight out of the box after mounting a 2-7X 1" tube . . . I'm consistently grouping 1/2-3/4" 5 shot groups at 100 yds off solid two point bench rest with CCI 40-gr. MAXI JHP & REM 40-gr. PSP. My rimfire answer for varmints and turkeys out to 150 yds. w/rest and low cost with mild barrel wear for fun at the range. I could've bought the same rifle in .17 HMR but wasn't tempted . I look forward to trying a variety of ammo when supply catching up with demand - hopefully sooner than later. Video sheds useful light on the .22 MAG and a lot of rifle for the $.
I've bought the same rifle, and absolutely love this sexy thing and even put a bipod on it
I didn’t do conclusive testing like you but I was shooting an 10” plate at 200m with Browning .22 WMR 40gr HP’s the other day. I was zeroed at 100m. To put 10 in a row on the plate at 200m I only raised 1 hash mark at full zoom. So maybe 4” of drop🤷♂️.
Thank you
1000 yard drop of those 40 gr. CCI's would be about 222 & 1/2 feet . Serious Kentucky windage . Check for power lines & small aircraft before that holdover .
Cool to see how the bullet slows down at 200 yards 🔥🔥
i have never seen a video with ZERO dislikes before. Good on you brother.
Great series what do we know, what do we think we know, what do we realty know. Well the 100 yard test did show you were "right" at 100. No prairy dogs will be damaged with this rifle.
you give a lot of practical info
Thanks for watching Charles
So basically the same bullet, not very aerodynamic, going at a higher speed out of the muzzle but still being the air brake a 22lr is. And I was thinking of buying a 22 magnum rifle too. Well it's fun out of my (insert quote of half the other folks here) Heritage Rough Rider and I guess thats where I'm going to let it stay for my limited boolat budget. thanks WhoTee
I'd say buy one. I have been using 22 wmr rifles for back yard varminting for decades. Sure, it is not a 200 yard varminter, but from 80 to 130 yards you can take out a woodchuck with one shot, and be confident of the small area you need to hit to do it. I do every summer here. 88 yard shot from the house to the barn where they dig the floor up in their tunnels. Never had to take more than one shot. I have the same rifle (Savage 93) also with a cheap 3x9 scope. Hit the kill zone every time. Longest shot was around 120 yards. Same result.
Good video and information. Thanks
Only issue i can see with this is at 100 yrds, you should have zeroed the different cartridges for a more accurate 200 yrd test. Your 1st 100 yrd group was already down and to the right. Should have zeroed it then shot to 200 yrds. So on and so forth with the rest. Keep in mind also, 1st shot was a cold barrel which as the barrel warms up your shot placement changes.
Great video WTW, those cci have some pop still @ 200.
Just ordered some Federal 22mag 50 gr JHP to do the test you just did. I have a 200yard range will be testing soon. I don't do videos but I do take notes. I did a test awhile back with sub-sonic 22 mag 45 gr at 100yards and they dropped 20" from the rounds I sighted the gun with, 40gr. Just a note I take the hogs in my trap with the sub-sonic 45 gr rounds out of a pistol.
Yup the subs drop quick
I have a REM. 597 I’ve noticed big difference in different manufacturers also.
Use Hornady v max 30g.
No drop at 200yds.
I love my Marlin 22 mag and my PMR 30...
Thank you WTW for such beautiful videos.
Thanks for watching!
Hey Adam Great video Mate thanks,
That’s one hell of a difference between the Norma and the CCI , I would never have guessed that result , must have been the range Boggy man playing around with y’all , he does stuff like to me a lot , Lol , Steve .
I would have to say that next to my .22 lr my .22 mag is my favorite rifle. I have 3 of them. All of them are very, very accurate however I have never tested them like this. I think that I like my Henry the best tho.
Good Info on the 22 mag
Thanks for watching Slick
Pretty cool gun.
do a chronograph check on the Norma and CCI curious to see the speed variation of both.
Been waitin on this one
Thanks for watching!
I had a Ruger in 22mag could hit 5in Plat at 500 yards using cci and that was 25 years ago.
Awesome!
Cool result💙💙💙
Looks better without light in intro. Lighting looks much more natural. Keep it!
Was watching your 300 wsm is awesome im thinking you get the 325 wsm a truly under rated 8mm magnum
Thanks for the video 👍👍
Thanks for watching Lance
Ive got that same rifle. Its a great gun ! I bought mine used from a dipship gun shop owner that screwed me over on it. It wouldnt feed shells hardly plus it would misfire 6 outta 10 times. I was pissed so i sent to savage . Cost me just shipping 56 bucks and i got it back they put a new bolt in it and gave me a new 10 rd clip and polished gun up nice for free !! I love them guys for standing by there guns which in yhis case they didnt have too. I have alot of respect for that company
Thanks for the video. I would like to see the Norma drop chart.
Great video.
I got the same rifle in the same calibre. Awesome shooter
Scope height figures into that drop so if your scope is higher or lower it will make some difference. Not sure of the height of your scope but the drop chart was for 1.5 inches. Thanks for sharing.
I shoot a lot of 22 Mag, I somehow have acquired five of them. 🤔 For longer ranges I like the 30gr much better than the 40gr. I also noticed the Norma ammunition drops a lot more than my other ammunition I suspect their velocities might be lower than their stating.
I have savage B22 mag . I never tried past 100 yd, I will someday.
Love my savage 93fvss I got the 21 inch heavy barrel stainless steel barrel only thing i don't like is the savage mags can be a pain to feed sometimes it's a track driver with cci anything really that's a old box of winchester keep that box I know I would I love old ammo boxes
I've done a lot of prairie dog shooting with a .22 mag. It handles distance very well but it gets a lot of wind drift even in a slight breeze. When that happens I have to go to a heavier bullet from a center fire but still a .22 but a good 1000 fps faster.
Interesting results! Would be interesting to see where those CCI would have hit at 100 yards. Enjoyed the video!
Yes, the cci may have been higher on the target ( shot without adjusting the scope)
So the published drop may be correct. Hard to know without shooting both at 100 yards.
Hard to shoot much these days. .22 mag has gotten so expensive.
Love using your kids marker. I use my kids all the time.
Great video!
Thanks for watching Tim
Never tried this. The drop kinda surprised me
"Magnus effect" seems to be strong on these. Interesting tests 👍
The CCI could have a higher point of impact at 100 yards. One inch of height at 100 turns into several at 200 when the speeds are this low.
Cool stuff! 😀
I have the same Rifle but a bullet drop retical scope I use 50 grian projectile ..Fedrals ammunition at 200 meters as I live in Australia.
I hit a 6 inch target range Conditions @ 200 meters ..kind regards and greetings from Australia 🇦🇺
Love my 22 mag
I wish my savage would cycle as good as yours !
the winchesters have a stated velocity of 1550fps. that would account for them probably dropping far below the target. and according to the strelok app the cci should drop 17.2"
Bet your getting a higher velocity than is listed with the cci. Interesting to know what it is to see if that's the factor that changed the drop or no.
My CZ does really good, I have old marlins that do good, but they are grandsons rifles, The CZ is my favorite all year gun, it's nasty with cci game points
I would like to see you shoot some Federal 50 grain loads in 22 mag..
Based on that test, the CCI are probably traveling faster than advertised.
Love this series that your doing! Because of your videos, I picked up a ruger american ranch .450 bushmaster today and leupold vx freedom scope and can't wait to shoot it! I have 3 different ammo to test accuracy. From what I see on other videos, hornady black has great accuracy, but what's your opinion on lethality on deer? I've heard mixed reviews on it. Also, I live in western oregon, and our Columbia blacktail deer are smaller than whitetail and mulies
I have not used the black ammo on deer yet
Slick video editing WTW!
Thanks for watching John
Wondering what caused that Norma to drap so fare but it sure did group. This is great knowledge for everyone and we sure do appreciate cha !! ( -:
Good stuff man keep it going!
Thanks Terry
Awsome!!!!
