This fall, I took a bull elk at 465 yards with my Savage 110 .308 using a Nikon ProStaff 7 scope and Federal Premium Terminal Ascent 175 grain bullets. The shot placement was a slightly back, double-lung shot. The elk turned around, took one stutter step, and dropped. Job done. I have one centerfire hunting rifle, this .308. It's taken pronghorn, deer, and pronghorn at 140 to 465 yards. While the industry would love to see me buy different calibers for different species and scenarios, my experience is that it is all about shot placement and bullet expansion. You need a rifle you shoot a lot in different realistic positions in different realistic conditions to be able to confidentially make adjustments in the field and have confidence in every shot taken. You need high quality bullets and know the foot pounds of force needed to be delivered and thus distance to be within for what you are shooting. I see guns as tools, not toys, and prefer hunting over shopping. The .308 is one of the great all-around calibers for this overall strategy to big game hunting.
.308 is the easiest caliber I have been shooting 175 grain Sierra since 1994. Stuck with it and even in the Marine Corps the M118 LR is a 175 grain Sierra BTHP. Now retired and still shooting the .308 May not be the best at one thing but it gets the job done. Never miss….! Once you stick with the same caliber for so long, you learn it like the back of your little man… Essentially it’s the KISS mentality. Even a little toss up with grain, you still don’t miss. You can find ammo everywhere, surplus and all, cheap and gets the job done. Semper USMC / Retired
The .308 will kill ANY animal in North America and will also work for any plains game in Africa. Magnificent round with large killing power when used with an accurate gun. You picked a good one Marine.
Mountain Man - first thx u for your service!! So glad to hear you state a particular weight and name of your favorite round. I just bought a new .308 and was wondering about a weight to use. I used 150 g with my 30.06 but didn’t really know why I chose that weight.
Been shooting 308 for many years, still does everything that I need it too. Just the one I choose. Shoot whichever makes you happy just have fun doing it!!
I've shot everything from pigs to rams, deer, and a few pretty big black bears with 165gr Hornady Customs out of my Remington 750 Woodsmaster 308 with the short 18.5" barrel and its done the job every time without failure
Finding a Remington 750 Woodsmaster is almost like finding a unicorn. Hold onto those babies cuz they’re a rare bird. I’d love to have one someday. Still shooting my grandpa’s 740 Woodsmaster.
I've been waiting on your video of the .308. I know my gun and ballistics but it's always nice to see someone else do the same. I handload my own 165gr. SST's and I can get 1.5 inch groups at 200 yards. I'm glad I went with .308.
Adam I ain't kiddin Bro. It doesn't matter if you're a pew pew guy or not, just watching you is dad gum entertaining!!!! You are so down to earth it's just fun to watch! Great video!
I'm a little late to this show! Really appreciate the effort you put into this show and folks understand that barrel twist rate should affect your bullet choices, 1-12 is ideal for 165gr or less, where 1-10 ideal for 165gr and up! I personally like 1-12 twist for hand load where it full power or subsonic loads, easy on the shoulder! Thanks again Nate
Now this was a interesting video and I have personally killed a lot of whitetail deer with the 308. My 308 Remington bolt gun most definitely likes the 150 Grain bullet the best.
I finally tested my CVA Hunter in .308 cal. Loves the Federal power shok 150 grain bullots. Not bad on the recoil and 1 MOA. Need a Cascade in .308 cal. Thanks for the video and testing WTW. 🎩☯️♠️🏁
Love the video. I have my Step-fathers 308 Remington BDL he bought new in 1976. It's sighted in 2 1/2 inches high at 100 yards. This way I can hold pretty much dead on at up to 225 yards. The rifle also does it's best with 165 gn. bullets. Keep those vids coming. Thanks again.
I really like a lot of the information you put out. I have only been hunting for about 6 years now and finally got my very first deer this year and I got a 10 point, he made it real easy walked out not 10 minutes and about 25 to 35 yards away from me. after I sat down.
My Ruger Gunsite Scout like the regular Remington Core Lokt 150 gr. Sighted in, 2 in. high at 100, and I get sub. 2" 3 to 5 shot groups, and about 2 1/2 in groups at 200. That's using a Redfield 3x9 scope, solid bench, and good gun rest. It's never failed to drop a deer every year. Granted, all the shots have been 150 yds. or less. I made a previous comment about your video on the 30-30. I always take one deer with each rifle (Ruger and Marlin). Two a year is all I need for me and my wife.
I have a Remington 700P in 308 and I aight mine in for 200 yards. First time shooting it after sight in we shot it at 400 yards even with OLD cheap corlokts 150 grain put 4 out of 4 shots in the bottom of a crushed coke can. We now have another one I bought for my dad since everyone was that impressed with it. Cant wait to try further distances and other grains to see what it REALLY likes to get 1,000 or even more.
Missed the live feed but I have to see this cause .308 is one of my favorites! Pretty impressed with the American at 100 yards! Would have thought the Precision would have shot little better tho!
You are the man brother, you've single handedly have started my firearm addiction and taught me a ton. Went from being a traditional bow hunter only, to using only a 308 rifle this year for catchin the deerz. You're slowly becoming the Fred Bear of boolot slingers. Thank you sir.
Another awesome & informative video brother. Loving your channel. I never really was on the 308 train, until covid. My main bolt gun love affairs were with 270 & 30-06. But at the brink of Covid, those 2 calibers vanished along with reloading components. I couldn't help but notice everywhere had 308, well 7.62x51, cheaper than anything else on the shelf. Even cheaper than 9mm. So I traded the 270 for a savage axis II in 308. The 30-06 R700 stayed, she ain't going anywhere 😉
Just got the axis in 308 too. Are you shooting the 7.62 nato's out of it? I noticed it's a lot cheaper than 308 ammo and enough people shoot 7.62 out of 308 but wondering if the axis handles them well
Enjoyed seeing this new loading on your channel! I’ve used the standard Corelokts for years in 270 cal, with good results. Was curious if the tipped version would add enough additional accuracy to be worth the extra $? Maybe the chrono test will reveal a little more. 👍🏼
Both groups will drop a whitetail at 200 yards if you can find such long range shots in most of Tennessee or Georgia 😊😊😊 never killed a deer past approximately 90-100 yards in both states…most were a lot closer ☺️☺️☺️

My first ever high powered rifle. Used laser sighter on wall at home dist center scope to center bore. Then two shots at 25 yards outdoor range to hone it in. I am thrilled with first 5 at 100... federal power shock 150gr... I havn't even used//tested the other ammo types to see what it likes.

Other than .22 lr and my AR and AK platform rifles, .308 has been my only other rifle caliber for years. The .308 can do most things well enough. It's not the best caliber for some applications, but it's pretty darn good for most. It's always been available, affordable, and easy to keep a good supply on hand. What's not to like?
Nice video! In Pa., deer hunting, I sight in my .308 (150 gr. core lokt) 2" high at 100 yards which puts it right on at 200, 9" low at 300, 27" low at 400 and 59" low at 500. My Weatherby Vangard shoots a 1MOA group at 100 yards. I am at point blank range out to 270 yards. The other considerations - wind & rain. Why 150 grain? Can't get much else here any more. Thanks for the video!!
So, I haven't tried the Rem Core-Lokt Tipped boolots yet. I have a Rem 700 chambered in 30-06 that I bought back in 1998 that loves the Fed P3006Q - Nosler Ballistic Tip 165 gr. Not sure if the tipped core-lokt is a boat-tailed profile, however, Federal has decided to discontinue the P3006Q, much to my dismay. It was a very accurate, consistent round. I have a Leupold 3Xi-CDS mounted on the top, shots out to 250 - 300 yds always put meat in the freezer. May have to try the core-lokt tipped to see how they perform. Oh yeah, just joined the .308 crowd with a Ruger SFAR in .308. Looking forward to see how it shoots.
Good video I have never tried this ammo both my 308 likes 165 or 168 gr match best factory ammo I’ve ever shot in them s federal gold metal match 168gr match
Hey man Iv been hunting for 10 plus years but Iv always used the same rifle, I’m lucky and get to hunt where the deer come in close, but now ima use my 308 it’s been 6 years since Iv shot a deer with it and I have it sighted for 100 yards but I’m prolly gunna take a shot up close like 20 yards close, I couldn’t remember if I needed to hold high or low because it’s sighted for 100 and I’ll be shooting 20. Good video man I needed it
I Have A PRIMARY ARM'S 4-14x44 HUD/DMR Scope On My Remington 700 PSS .308... Its Zero'ed At 100yds & I Can Hit A Man Sized Target At 1000yds, I Use The 165gr GMM Ammo...
I went with savage ba stealth . Ruger made a proprietary system from my under standing . I have 3 other savage model 10s I can exchange in the chasse the Ruger is what one gun.
If your group at 100 yards is showing low, then when you shoot 200yds its 5"inch low, 1" lower than the 4" the drop chart shows, it could be due to the low group.
This is a valid point, also added point...open to opinion or discussion, some ammo performs differently at different ranges and shooters. So many variables. For example, and not a very good one, the difference between slugs an birdshot. Most people can handle birdshot like its nothing, some people can do that with slugs. Some folks can shoot pistols on a dime all day and then pick up a rifle and couldnt even hit a good idea lol. What a wonderful passion it is with firearms

Good video man I needed it
High. But only like an inch
Great video! Nice rifles and I like .308, even though I actually like 30-06 even better for it's versatility and availability of ammo.
Wish I would have brought a Ruger American but I fixed mine.
I asked for this yesterday!! Thanks!!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the info 👍.
Like Mountain Man, 308 was weapon of choice at my job (in the real world) Wish I lived somewhere I could use it more often. love the videos.

I Have A PRIMARY ARM'S 4-14x44 HUD/DMR Scope On My Remington 700 PSS .308... Its Zero'ed At 100yds & I Can Hit A Man Sized Target At 1000yds, I Use The 165gr GMM Ammo...
bravo.thenks
I went with savage ba stealth . Ruger made a proprietary system from my under standing . I have 3 other savage model 10s I can exchange in the chasse the Ruger is what one gun.
I went to my local Walmart and they had 3 boxes of federal gold medal match 168 gr and I grabbed those suckers so fast. They were $28 a box as well.
Good deal
If your group at 100 yards is showing low, then when you shoot 200yds its 5"inch low, 1" lower than the 4" the drop chart shows, it could be due to the low group.
Great video, thanks for the info. I'm shooting a Savage .308 with Tulammo 150gr ammo and am getting about the same groupings at 100yrs.
It's amazing how one rifle and not another like certain weight ammo. You must find the right booloots for your rifle.
Yup
This is a valid point, also added point...open to opinion or discussion, some ammo performs differently at different ranges and shooters. So many variables. For example, and not a very good one, the difference between slugs an birdshot. Most people can handle birdshot like its nothing, some people can do that with slugs. Some folks can shoot pistols on a dime all day and then pick up a rifle and couldnt even hit a good idea lol. What a wonderful passion it is with firearms
