I shot 2 times and it kept after the calf so I really poured the lead at him then it turned on me and when it was about 20 yards away it turned sideways to me and I poured the lead into its chest then it ran another 80 yards and climbed 2 more fences. 23 rounds later It was dead and my calf was alive. Looking at ballistics between the two cartridges, the 22mag has about a extra 100yds on a 22lr. So a 22mag has the same velocity @100yds as a 22lr leaving the muzzle.
Have a Ruger single six with 22lr and 22mag cylinders. Have had it since late 70s and have fired hundreds of rounds without any misfires i can remember. Has the 9 or 91/2" barrel and is STILL SUPER ACCURATE! LOVE IT!
Good video! I like that you took and posted numbers for these old eyes to see. I’ve been a fan of the WMR round for a while and am in the market for another. I currently have .22 Hornet, .222Rem, 22-250, and .243 calibres for truck guns and hunting varmints. The .17WSM we have is obsolete because rounds are too expensive. It was a great round because it was accurate and cheap, but will be moving to a different .17 or going to the WMR. Both can be cheap to shoot and I like the added bullet weight of the .22 mag and my targets are usually less than 100 yards . I’m leaning towards the .22WMR and the Ruger american, but I’m stuck on a scope choice. I like a good quality fixed in 4 or 6X like Leopoldo or nikon, but am aghast that these options are scarce these days. I wish some of you kind folks would weigh in here! What would you do? 😉
As an update, I bought a Henry pump WMR and put aftermarket aperture sights on the rear, and waiting on shipment of a new front sight/height to create a iron sight option for these olds eyes. I plan to be able to shoot baseballs at 50 yds
I am also impressed with the WMR. I think it is a nice option for EDC in the Taurus 942M, revolver. Especially for my daughter in law who doesn't like the recoil of a semi-auto 9 mil.
I agree. A handsome three-inch941 in stainless is what I leave out for the recoil-shy wife and daughter. It holds eight rounds of .22WMR. Incidentally, if the .22WMR is still too "blasty" for a sensitive shooter, the gun will chamber and fire the weaker (and much more obscure) .22WRF round.
We currently have gold dots loaded in our 942, it has been a good little carry gun...accurate out of the box, and a da/sa revolver for rim fire the way to go...sure, we give up lots of power compared to heavier calibers, but we aren't near to the mean streets, either...
Thanks for the great video Just started shooting the .22 mag. using a Savage 93 F love it so much thinking of getting a SavageB22 Magnum FVSS .22 WMR Love the heavy barrels. Mostly shoot the .22 LR. witch I have a couple of but my pick .22 LR is the Savage Mark II TR. With the hard wood stock fits me like a well made glove. For the .22 mag find the Federal 50 gr, works great, very tight groups at 50 yd.
The Rough Rider is a poor revolver to check velocity the forcing cone is so deep when the bullet leaves the cylinder all the gases go around the bullet before it reaches the rifling. If you set the barrel back .230 you will gang 400 ft per second.
Yep. Convertible revolvers make good options because of the ability to train with cheaper LR ammunition. For defensive purposes, though, I can think offhand of only convertible revolvers with double-action capability, a Taurus whose model number I don't recall right now, and the Diamondback Sidekick.
Yep, 22mag has a big following in Texas. Like you show here you don't gain much in a revolver.....other than blast. One thing though I have never had a mag fail to fire. Used to LR especially bulk ammo was bad about having duds. Now lately I have been shooting thousands of rounds of bulk LR through my CMMG Conversion for the AR and I have had virtually no issues. Ironically the only failure to fire was with a CCI. Most ammo shot was Federal Auto Match and Remington Golden Bullets. Their velocities vary wildly but, they are going bang. It could be the hard hit the AR trigger group is putting on them that has made fails to fire a none issue.
There is 22 mag made for pistol length barrels & it will usually get the 40gr at around the 1200ish fps. The hornady ftx 45 gr gets 1200 ish fps , obviously the barrel length & individual firearm matters .
I've got the same RR, but with a shorter barrel, I don't recall offhand the length. Unfortunately mine didn't come with the magnum cylinder, so I REALLY need to pick one up from Heritage. .22wmr is a Hot little round! I should probably pick up that Ruger American rifle as well, I'm a Ruger fan, only second to Smith &Wesson! Great, informative video! Keep doing this. We move them fast through the shop, and haven't had a single complaint or one brought back yet.
I'm with you on Ruger. My 1st was a bearcat when I was 10 or 11. Later, Single Six, then a Blackhawk. A J & a K frame S&W (Both awesome sidearms) When I got older. 1911 & later M9 (hated it then, love it now) in the military. A couple of polymer striker fired. It may cement my fuddery but, for me, handgun tech could have stopped at the GP100. Ruger never appealed to me as a long gun until the American Ranch as for my normal use, lever guns just seem more practical. I've been back & forth on caliber. And once you get an itch you know you got to scratch it.

I would be interested to see the velocity of CCI .22lr Stingers in your bolt action rifle. I bet it’s about 1400fps. That’s 400-500 fps slower than .22wmr.
Now try .17HMR and 17WSM. They’re amazing for rimfire. I started with the venerable 22lr. Like millions of people. Then 22 Mag… Slowly getting the larger rimfire cases. Stopped at 17HMR. Found it’s awesome as well. Next Wanna get a 17WSM.
I’m more curious how the 22 mag feels vs 22lr. Sometimes when I shoot 22lr out of my 8lb Henry golden boy, it feels more like a BB gun or air gun. Does the 22mag feel more like a real gun so to speak, does it have a big difference in sensation?
Noticeable, but nothing major. Definitely not on par with .223. It's basically a middle ground below 5.56 but above .22LR. I've noticed the same things about the Golden Boy and .22LR. 🤣
The pistol test may be flawed in that you are likely to lose velocity with an interchangeable pistol such as the Rough Rider. Your chamber is not going to be a precise fit the mag round. It is a decimal smaller because it is not a heel projectile.
It can if the revolver is chambered for it. Now, your results as far as terminal performance will likely suffer as a result of the short barrel. But that comes with the territory lol
first time i ever used a .22 wmr was when i heard a raccoon killing one of my chickens on christmas, ran out in the yard in my underwear with a .22 colt revolver and spotlight at 3am and fired twice at the raccoon. pretty sure the 2nd shot hit it, it was never seen again. i was pleasantly surprised that it actually had some zip to it for such a small round.
I keep catching myself getting more and more enamored with the little round. Do I have other rounds that do stuff better? Sure. But they're twice as expensive and half the fun. 🤣
I don't have a great way to compare that, honestly. I don't have many models of .22 WMR that have a corresponding .22LR model, and vice versa. But as far as ignition, I've experienced far less failures to fire with .22WMR
They are two different rounds. They have things in common, but they are not designed to be similar. Just because they are the same calibre means nothing. You could compare two 30 calibre rounds and get totally different results depending on design and purpose.
I'm in a country where i cant get any semi auto center fire rifles, so seeing how 22mag performs its really making me consider getting a 22mag semi auto rifle to fit my """""fighting rifle""""" slot. I may get a 223 bolt action at some point or even a 30-06/308 but def. Having a semi auto with 10-20rd mags beats a 308 bolt action with 5 round mags
Rifle definitely makes a lot more difference, however I’ve watched a couple of videos of both heritage comparisons and Ruger single six comparisons, and it seems that the heritage doesn’t do a very good job of holding in pressure. The velocity difference on different heritage barrel lengths with the same round is non-existent. And then when I’ve seen the single six 22lr vs 22mag velocity differences they have been more dramatic than what you’ve gotten here. I think I saw about a 200-300 fps gain between LR and magnum with the same bullet weight out of the single six
I have more luck with stopping ground hogs it's a right smart of difference with the .22 mag more so than the .22lr. Squirrels not so much difference. Rabbits not so much.. Of course I'm using rifles though. Crono only tell you #'s....go hunting with 'em that tells the tale. I have a old marlin .22 mag and a savage .17hmr no need taking a .22lr for ground hogs. And for over 200yds I have a savage m12 in 22-250. That will turn a ground hog into squishy sausage.
That's kind of slow on the 22 mag. My 18" semi auto CZ512 gives me a velocity of right around 1900fps. Maybe I had a fast lot? I dunno. Personally, I have a 22LR bolt gun and it pretty much is just a trainer for people these days. The CZ512 can do everything it does but at a longer range. The form 1 can I have makes it hearing safe in small bouts with supersonics, and the Winchester 45gr subsonic (now discontinued) does what 22LR does and just as quiet. I even load a cycling 50gr subsonic with the 50gr gameshok bullet in A22 cases with red dot (I'll be trying trailboss soon). I also have a 22 K hornet, and I love it, but between the semiautomatic 22WMR and my 223 Remington chassis bolt gun, I have my 22 caliber needs filled.
Better at what ? If better means most powerful or longer range, then 22 wmr is better. ... But if better is light weight, portable , quiet and lower recoil, 22 lr wins. There's more to a caliber than how powerful it is. Once you have enough power, more is kind of meaningless.
In rifles, yes. In handguns, that advantage shrinks some as far as velocity goes... BUT... you DO get better bullet construction in the .22 WMR than .22LR
Not all single-action 22 revolvers are created equal. Ruger Single Six convertible with the 6.5-inch barrel averages 1403 fps with the exact same .22wmr ammo. Heritage just isn't worth it. How they manage to drop 300 fps over the Ruger is beyond me.
Well, as you are getting hyped up over the .22 Mag., maybe it's time to step it up yet another notch. NOW... you need to get your hands on a .17 HMR; the rimfire cartridge that stood the varminting world on it's ear.
But really only good for varmints. However a 17 hmr in a pistol would be really interesting to see the numbers & compared to 22 or & 22 mag. My guess is it would have a terrible time cycling a semi auto action & the energy would most likely be down a fair bit. Still I’d love to see it.
For what purpose. Shooting rats and rabbits on the farm a 22short is enough. For personal carry the 22WRM Thunderstruck is awesome. Just avoid the Mk.1 as it was picky on ammo sometimes causing the bullet to tumble. The longer barrel on the Mk.2 solves this.
The 22 LR & 22 magnum are fantastic little cartridges . Both have large verities of ammo including subsonic. The 22 LR can be fired in the 22 magnum with fantastic results if using a 22 mag case as a chamber sleeve . ( cut off the rim ) also the 22 magnum can be custom loaded with std .224 rifle bullets & set up for longer range use ! If one wants to go to that trouble. Check out this video of shooting the 22 magnum at 1000 yards ua-cam.com/video/Em-7LoXAp-w/v-deo.html .
@@ArchetypeofMan hahahaha my pleasure 😁. I did a video a few weeks ago on my channel about the 22 lr in the magnum. My misus has a custom 22lr squeeze bore in the shop atm , squeezing std factory 22lr down to .204 , in a 1:8 twist 22” barrel. Allegedly should gain 150-200fps , increase BC & SD , penetrate deeper & is more devastating on target from the higher rpm from twist rate & increase in velocity & use of soft lead . Last week I got a call from my nieghbor at 7 pm (still daylight here) that a cougar was going to kill my 2 week old calf, so I grabbed the nearest gun to me that was only sighted in at 25 yards (AR 15) 223 caliber ran to my back yard watched a 160 lb male cougar climb over my fence at about 130 yards away . Hogs 22 mag solids for sure.
@@wendellbell6164 wow that musta got your heart pounding huh.
how many times did you got that cat ??
@@FYMM69 I have shot 5 cougar in a pretty small area. No I don't get excited til afterwards. 4 took 1 shot each, but the 5th cougar was was trying to kill my calf until I entervined, then it turned on me. I shot at it 23 times with a 223 remington 55 gr ballistic tip but only hit it 21 times with a new gun that wasn't tuned up yet. You have to use what you can find in a hurry.
@@wendellbell6164 you shot a cougar 21 times with a .223 and it was still alive? I call bullshit
Looking at ballistics between the two cartridges, the 22mag has about a extra 100yds on a 22lr. So a 22mag has the same velocity @100yds as a 22lr leaving the muzzle.
A 14" barrel is the length a .22 mag reaches it's potency.... Yes a longer barrel Might get a few FPS but Not Much.... excellent video.
Good testing brother, I keep my Ruger Single Six loaded with .22Mag the velocity is similar to .22LR out of a rifle. 👍
My 10rd 50gr out of my 24” barrel is my protection I’ve never had a mag jam or anything. Plus it blows the shit out of anything 75yds away spiraling 🌀
Have a Ruger single six with
22lr and 22mag cylinders. Have had it since late 70s and have fired hundreds of rounds without any misfires i can remember. Has the 9 or 91/2" barrel and is STILL SUPER ACCURATE! LOVE IT!
When you said you shot your chronograph, I knew I had to subscribe
You rock
Great comparison video, I like your fact based testing and self deprecating style. Hope you are still here tomorrow and beyond.
Thank you, Mick!!
THH. Good video with nice comparison between handgun and the rifles. Thanks for sharing and take care.
Your range looks like Hickock45 and this video is shades of Paul Harrell. If there are two guys you want to emulate, you have done well. Nice work!
You hit that on the head!
IT'S NOT THE SIZE OF THE PACKAGE, IT'S THE ADDRESS YOU MAIL IT TO.
Good info... You are VERY well spoken .. CLEAR and CONCISE
The Rough Rider is a poor revolver to check velocity the forcing cone is so deep when the bullet leaves the cylinder all the gases go around the bullet before it reaches the rifling. If you set the barrel back .230 you will gang 400 ft per second.
Thanks mate.
I want the PMR-30 to work so badly....but the reviews are so mixed i could never rely on one in good conscience.
Buy it and get the MCARBO all-in-one upgrade kit. ($250). Will shoot everything then.
I'd like to see you review that 22 Magnum semi-auto Rifle made by Rossie. Takes 10-round mag, and barrel length is about 20".
I'll keep an eye out if we can snag one at the shop, AND if the missus says it's ok. lol I've bought a few more than we agreed to lately.
I wonder if those suppressors aren't cutting down your FPS readings 100-200 FPS
Pretty decent video...your results about what I expected...the .22 ammo has it's good/bad points, affordability outweighs most other factors for us...
Absolutely. Gotta be cost effective to practice with, and gotta practice to be effective with it. The never ending cycle
Wait isn’t .22wmr the same as .22mag?
Yes they are the same
I was surprised by the 22WMR out of the handgun. I expected it to be faster than it was. The rest were about where I'd expect them to be.
There is 22 mag made for pistol length barrels & it will usually get the 40gr at around the 1200ish fps. The hornady ftx 45 gr gets 1200 ish fps , obviously the barrel length & individual firearm matters .
.22 mag gets real useful when the target gets bigger than squirrels and rabbits. It's just more gun.
It's good info for those just getting into the Community, and entertaining for those of us who've been in it a hot minute. 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks for the vote of confidence, Sierra, I appreciate it. I can't wait to show you guys what I snagged today, in the same .22WMR vein. lol I'll make a members only community post as soon as I grab some decent pictures.
I really can't recommend the American rifles enough, based on my experience. They seem to be some of the best things going, especially for the money.
@@ArchetypeofMan You can't beat Ruger...they're Made in America, by Americans. 👍🏻 They're just good, solid, no nonsense firearms. They do what they do! S&W is the Same way, that's why they're my 2 favorites.
@@alanroberts6936 I see we share the Same tastes in hardware! 👍🏻I LOVE my wheelies! I'm Good with them. I love when these new guys complain about a .38 snubbie hurting to shoot. I run 125gr +p's in my S&W airweight j frame! My other "go to" snubbie is a Taurus 605 .357 magnum. I've run 158gr thru it No Problem. I guess when All you've ever shot is 9x19, then yeah, I guess it does seem Harsh.
To be fair, 158 grain pills out of the airweight I reviewed DID hurt a bit. 😂 but i DO have a small aircraft's worth of metal in my arm. lol jk
barrel lenght matters at least upto 18 inchs past that no speed is gained just accuracy
rather have them both in a lever action
I have a Henry .22LR lever. I need/ want a .22 WMR one too. 😂 How do you like your 22WMR lever gun?
@@ArchetypeofMan love it 12 round capacity took a while to get the sights right because of the width of them , like the finer beads but got it dialed in and the action is as smooth as hot butter had a Winchester 22 mag before and regretted selling it so i got the Henry
22mag is my favorite round
I would like to know the gap between the two cylinders and the forcing cone for each chamber and link those with the velocities.
I have the 17 HMR on my wishlist lol
Same I wish the mags magazine could chamber it
I’m more curious how the 22 mag feels vs 22lr.
Yes
I love my 22 mag Marlin bolt action rifle. Need to get a scope for it.
The pistol test may be flawed in that you are likely to lose velocity with an interchangeable pistol such as the Rough Rider. Your chamber is not going to be a precise fit the mag round. It is a decimal smaller because it is not a heel projectile.
Can the 22magnum be fired from a 2inch barrel of a snub nose pistol
It can if the revolver is chambered for it. Now, your results as far as terminal performance will likely suffer as a result of the short barrel. But that comes with the territory lol
Which cartridge tends to jam less? That’s my main concern with semi loading rimfire rounds.
first time i ever used a .22 wmr was when i heard a raccoon killing one of my chickens on christmas, ran out in the yard in my underwear with a .22 colt revolver and spotlight at 3am and fired twice at the raccoon. pretty sure the 2nd shot hit it, it was never seen again. i was pleasantly surprised that it actually had some zip to it for such a small round.
I keep catching myself getting more and more enamored with the little round.
Do I have other rounds that do stuff better? Sure. But they're twice as expensive and half the fun. 🤣
@@ArchetypeofMan there is something oddly satisfying about plinking with a .22 at 100m or more lol.
22magnum most loads, energy same as old 38 special loads
What do you think is better? Happy New Year!
I wish Ruger would make an LCPII in 22MAG.
That would be super awesome.
What would you all recommend new to exercising their second amendment right but doesn't want to go above a .22 as a first handgun
Smith and wesson 22 mag revolver
I keep wishing for a reliability comparison
I don't have a great way to compare that, honestly. I don't have many models of .22 WMR that have a corresponding .22LR model, and vice versa. But as far as ignition, I've experienced far less failures to fire with .22WMR
22 wmr is a deer poacher dream gun lol
I've heard that from folks lol
Add the Winchester 45 grain subsonic 22 mag
They are two different rounds. They have things in common, but they are not designed to be similar. Just because they are the same calibre means nothing. You could compare two 30 calibre rounds and get totally different results depending on design and purpose.
Test Hornady critical defense in snubnose...
You know, that's not a bad idea!
Question? can you use 22LR ammunition in a 22 MAG / WMR Rife ?
You MIGHT get it to chamber and fire, but it's not recommended
Started to watch and when I seen the earrings. I knew you were a Diddy fan.
Weird inference to make, and wrong. But thanks for the engagement
I think I saw about a 200-300 fps gain between LR and magnum with the same bullet weight out of the single six
except for the price and amount of options 22wmr is nearly 50% better
Thanks
I hate the ruger 10/22 10 rd mag its such a pain to get out! I opted for a 25 rd mag instead much easier to get out !
Definitely an acquired skill. And God help you if you get dirt in there with it lol
I've shot them, but never had a use for them.
I keep forgetting that WMR IS 22 magnum. Hardly hear it called WMR.
I think my favorite thing I've heard it called was "22 Mangle'Em" by an old timer that came in the shop. 🤣🤣
Big difference in the 22.mag.
A 22 wmr out of a 3 inch barrel is morepowerful then 22 lr out of a rifle fact check me on that
I have more luck with stopping ground hogs it's a right smart of difference with the .22 mag more so than the .22lr.
22 mag vs 17 HMR vs Mach17
The answer is way better
Better at what ?
If better means most powerful or longer range, then 22 wmr is better.
... But if better is light weight, portable , quiet and lower recoil, 22 lr wins.
There's more to a caliber than how powerful it is. Once you have enough power, more is kind of meaningless.
A 22 mag. is about 800 ft per second better than a 22 lr.
Disagree...., step right into the 17WSM & 17 Hornet.
🇦🇺😎👍Very interesting
For what purpose. Shooting rats and rabbits on the farm a 22short is enough. For personal carry the 22WRM Thunderstruck is awesome. Just avoid the Mk.1 as it was picky on ammo sometimes causing the bullet to tumble. The longer barrel on the Mk.2 solves this.
allow for cylinder gap loss......use semi auto pistol next time sonny and dont shoot your self in the foot!
.22 wmr don't do well in a semi auto pistol.
🇦🇺😎👍🍻
The 22 LR & 22 magnum are fantastic little cartridges . Both have large verities of ammo including subsonic. The 22 LR can be fired in the 22 magnum with fantastic results if using a 22 mag case as a chamber sleeve . ( cut off the rim ) also the 22 magnum can be custom loaded with std .224 rifle bullets & set up for longer range use ! If one wants to go to that trouble. Check out this video of shooting the 22 magnum at 1000 yards ua-cam.com/video/Em-7LoXAp-w/v-deo.html .
Well now you've given me a new rabbit hole to go down. lol Thank you!!!
@@ArchetypeofMan hahahaha my pleasure 😁. I did a video a few weeks ago on my channel about the 22 lr in the magnum. There’s no footage of actual shooting because I’m in Australia & we have gun hating police & media. The results shocked me with how well they shot. Really can’t wait to see how the aguila 60 gr go & some of the monolithic copper hyper velocity as well . Btw meant to be a 200 yard bunny rifle 🤔
Not on the same planet .
