I always thought the line David says to Hannah that "You will always have a father, and you will show him respect when he's speaking" is meant to imply rather that David thinks of himself as God, or at least as God over this clan. It ties into the banner that says "He will provide". David is playing the role of God by being able to provide for the community and the reason he is fearful of running out of food is that he will be unable to adopt that role since he would be unable to provide.
I think they did better than the game honestly, i love how they let ellie take out her anger on david and she absolutely went savage on him, bella Ramsey did incredible for her acting in this episode!
Well she’s a hell of actress. When Bella was actually 13 or 14, she did a scene in GOT where she shames a room full of men 3x her age, later in the series , she kills a freaking ice zombie giant
Joel's recovery is totally realistic. If you remember, ever having flu or a terrible fever due to an infection. soon as it seems at its worst then the fever breaks (especially if its an infection being treated with antibiotics) you feel better and fast. It's why a lot of people stop taking antibiotics before the infection has truly cleared up due to rapid recovery.
RN here: Please finish your entire bottle of prescribed antibiotics, even though you feel much better. Antibiotics reduce the number of bacteria over time. Just because they are reduced does not mean they are eliminated. The real potential for you to create “Superbugs” inside your body by misusing antibiotics is real. The bacteria within your body react to the antibiotic chemicals by changing at the cellular level to be able to withstand a future onslaught of another antibiotic bath. If you harbor these superbug bacteria in your body, and they multiply, you can relapse and they can make you very sick. Now that they are resistant there are few or no effective antibiotic treatments to make you well again. This is a life-threatening situation for you and a problem for all humanity if bacteria gain the upper hand against us once more. Please. Take all your antibiotics exactly as prescribed. Thank you!!! ❤
@@staceywalker8699 False! Antibiotics DO NOT shut down your immune system. Antibiotics give your overwhelmed immune system the opportunity to recover while it fights the battle against invading organisms. You are just nuts! Do you know that literally billions of lives have been saved since the advent of antibiotics? Do not take antibiotics indiscriminately or use them recklessly, and never take them for granted. It is through misuse we are creating superbugs that are immune to antibiotics.
@@staceywalker8699 😮 you said All antibiotics do is shut down your immune system [which they do not] leaving you more susceptible to the same infection [not true] But I can see now how I misread what you said. Really all caps was overkill. I am sorry. 😞
The 2 mega shots, the love for ellie, the adrenaline from the rage he had, its very realistic his injury wouldn’t be that much of a bother anymore when he knows he cant let down his 2nd daughter like he did the first
Actually really glad you asked about Joel's quick recovery. In my experience, getting that first dose of antibiotics when you're sick from infection feels like the clouds are parting and heaven's holy light is shining down upon you. It's relief within an hour or two in pill form so I imagine an injection would be even more amazing. It's actually kind of problem; people feel better and don't take the rest of their course as the doctor prescribes, so pathogen is not fully eliminated, and after awhile they begin to feel sick again.
Joel’s recovery actually didn’t seem that rushed to me, adrenaline is a hell of a drug. After I was in a car accident I didn’t feel ANY pain in my body even like 6+ hours later because I still had so much adrenaline pumping. Turns out I had fucked up a disc or something between my C4 and C5. So Joel having the sudden adrenaline rush of “people are trying to kill us” makes me his sudden “recovery” make more sense.
A person does not suddenly start pedophilia in adulthood, like most fetishes, the person is aware they find children attractive before adulthood. For a pedophile to get the education and training needed to become a teacher, it seems obvious that this person was intending to act on their pedophilia rather than suppress it. It actually makes a lot of sense that a pedophile is ok with eating people, because pedophilia essentially requires the person to see other people as objects to be used, it requires them to not feel remorse to hurt others in order to satisfy themselves.
The score in the game def made it.... more.. I also think they messed up by not having him stop her like he did in the game. It felt... it just *felt* more in that way..
i love how this show proves something every episode. i've seen people complaining ,,its not brutal enough compared to the game'' and as a die hard fan of tlou who doesnt flinch when horrific scenes are being shown, this ep made me shiver. everytime someone complains, directors prove them wrong. love it, great series, fantastic episode.
Dude I gasped SO hard! Like he just casually backhanded her, and her mother did nothing! It just shows the amount of fear they have for him and also the power he has, also, am I the only one that thought he might have been taking advantage of Hannah? He said "fighting is what I like most" or something along those lines when he tried to assault Ellie, it wouldn't shock me if he previously assaulted hannah who looks the same age as Ellie.
The fact that she just said out loud exactly what they were planning on doing. But her saying it out loud was a threat to his "good man" persona i front of the other cult members
I tried to not cry in this episode I've cried so much falling in love with the story all over again, but still the "baby girl" line so subtly said here I broke. I do miss infected but the story is still being done so well. You can tell it's made by people who are fans of the game because they are very delicate with the changes, I'm sad it's over next week!
It works for me that we are not seeing the infected a lot. It keeps me on edge worried when one might pop out. Nice job showing Rian Johnson at the "subverting expectations" part of your breakdown. He's more full of himself than the big bad of this episode!
When Ellie was cleaving the shit out of that creep, with every strike I was quite literally yelling at my tv “YESSS DO IT AGAIN!!!!! AGAIn!!” It was such a satisfying ending for such a creepy POs
Ellie went full Michael Myers in that scene stab after stab also Ellie killing the original Joel was an extra touch. Fantastic episode i knew what was coming, and yet I still got worried 😂.
What an amazing episode. Also, thanks for pointing out the T - O - D thing. Whether intentional or not, they included a little wordplay with "Todd" not only being a placeholder for "God", but also the German word for death. As in, their house of God is also a house of death.
I understand why you'd want more focus on the infected but I disagree. I think in a video game it's good to have constant action, but I really like the episodes with no infected, where we focus more on the people and storyline.
Agreed in the show it can focus more on society’s collapse and how we’re as much a danger to ourselves when backs against the wall survival mode. Infected is the catalyst but it’s people that are causing collapse I kind of think of it like how GOT was about wars etc but you didn’t see that much of it in the show it was about tension drama characters that had you on edge of seat. Can’t really do it with a video game so I enjoy this adaptation for TV
I completely agree! We have enough zombie shows that are non-stop fights, and it works well for games, but for my TV medium I prefer to feel connected to the characters, like I'm on this journey with them!
With Ep. 3, this one was awesome! It absorbed all the aspects from the game's narrative, chunking out the exaggerations, while deeping down on David's character. One more thing: at last some of the game's raw violence without filters!!
When it comes to Joel's recovery. He was waking up when Ellie left and he heard the guy upstairs. I think it came to down to Joels fight or flight instincts kicking in
I’d like to know where the rest of David’s “flock” were when the steakhouse was burning and Ellie escaped and found Joel. Perhaps they are celebrating the fact that David is no longer there to torture them
In the game it looked like david was just trying to like choke her to death In the live action series however it looked like he was gonna do something else that's vile
It was implied he was going to try to assault her in the game. They hinted this when he says "You have no idea what I'm capable of". Even so, they were much more explicit about it in the HBO series and I'm not complaining in the slightest. I think it added much more to the scene. Belle was absolutely amazing!
@@emiliaburgos5404 yes David was a pedophile both in the game and show but he’s it’s a little more noticing as he was about to rape her then she killed him
I was thinking oh baby girl is coming, it's coming. Episodes got longer so I thought maybe next week. Then everything happened quickly and I was like baby girl part yes. And when Joel hugged Ellie and said baby girl , I cried. While playing the game I cried crazily for that part. I thought this would change but no. I still cried hysterically
Although it’s possible that Joel could’ve recovered that quickly, I definitely believe that this episode was a bit rushed in general. Specifically, the scene with David and Ellie when they spoke after James went to get the penicillin. Like ThinkStory said, the gameplay made it more believable that Ellie would consider David’s proposition because they were attacked by the horde and he saved her. However, still a great ep! I wonder if the show would have Hannah come back in a future season and become the leader of the remaining flock and try to kill Ellie, but idk considering they haven’t deviated much from source material.
I don’t think the group will survive Ellie and Joel killed 5 of their men. They’ve lost a good amount of their guns. They’re in that basement no one knows about.
I think they messed up by not having him stop her like he did in the game. It felt... it just *felt* more in the video game version of the "baby girl" scene.. I also wished Ellie said ".. Joel.." the way she does right after Joel says "baby girl.."
I was amazed by this episode but the only part I would change is to have Joel show up as Ellie was going to town on David's head like in the game. That carried so much more impact than him coming along as she walked off. They missed out on so much emotion by changing that one scene when they've, basically, nailed the recreation
In the game Ellie murders David with a hysterical laughter and glee and blood flies all over the place and she's soaked in blood and she doesn't stop until Joel says he's dead.
Ellie is...intense. I love Bella's interpretation of her, she seems to have a harder edge in the show. Sweet moment b/w Joel and 'baby girl' at the end. Warmed the cockles of my heart.

My SO pointed out that David's plate is HEAPING compared to the small bowls most others had. I didn't even notice because I was watching the actor's faces so closely. Maybe being the "voice of God" means he doesn't have to starve, which would have been why he turned to cannabilism (without a vote and only known to an elite few) in the first place.
Good point about the timing of the healing of the knife wound...miraculous antibiotics are instant cures in sci-fi movies and I suppose that we can stretch our imaginations to overlook this blunder into that genre for the sake of accelerating the plausibility of alertness and strength needed to overcome enemies in an untimely battle.
No the recovery was not rushed…. The body of a sick person under no threat will conserve energy as much as possible, so he was just trying to sleep it out as we all do when sick… but when at risk, adrenaline kicks in and it’s a whole different story !
I was conflicted too!! BUT THEN AGAIN, I guess his speedy recovery was due to the fact, he already is a well trained fighter and knew he was in danger which pumped his adrenaline and then once the penicillin kicked in as well, that probably would have kick started it because he never had a weak personality or strength to him. Though it was a brutal episode and I loved it!!! But I love you channel as well! The references to other characters and TV shows looooool
Well he wasn't fully recovered and at full strength. He only recovered consciousness that's all. But he's a trained military guy so he brutally tortured and killed all 3 baddies without mercy.
Joel heals instantly like a video game med kick hit him true. Recovery takes time the Stab wound would have also slowed him down making it highly unlikely he’d be able to take those guys down
I thought she did bit David in the game… Maybe I’m misremembering. But this was an amazing episode and an amazing review. I agree with you I wish there were more infected. Like yes humans are the biggest threat but the infected could have more of a presence. I don’t think we’ve seen them for 2 episodes now. Which doesn’t seem like a lot in comparison but they are so good.
I know a lot of people are commenting that you feel better after 2 doses of antibiotics and also his adrenaline would help, but Joel didn’t just have an infection, he was stabbed. I can’t remember how deep it was but surely that would restrict his movement. I can’t imagine that he wouldn’t have ripped his stitches, especially since they were done by Ellie. As someone who hasn’t played the game, I wish we did see an infected this episode. I think that would have added to the fear of those men thinking Ellie was infected for a moment. Also I just assumed that Ellie would think they were evil right away so to see the preacher give Ellie a reason to trust him would have been interesting.
I feel like the people who played the game have to remember that this is a show and we are not gonna get a whole 10 minute scene pf injured joel walking around looking for ellie, the show needs to have things at a faster pace to get everything they need in it
Idk about that bad of an infection but for high fever "simple" infections like bronchitis that i had after 1 day of antibiotics you are feeling a lot better. The fever goes down so quickly and you start to feel yourself again.
I can’t help but see Thandie Newton when I look at her daughter who plays Sarah. She’s her mother’s clone. And what a brilliant episode this was. Interesting how Ellie threatened to shoot him between the eyes, then he later repeats that line - especially when the Biblical David killed Goliath by hitting him with a stone between the eyes.
No, I think Joel hearing the unfamiliar footfalls for so long was enough to get him enough of an adrenaline rush knowing those feet are there to kill him specifically. It made sense as I was watching and I did think whether it should be feasible in the moment
Seriously, Ellie and David are screaming and fighting and the steakhouse is a raging fire... But no one comes to take a look? Meanwhile Joel has no problem locating them LOL
I'm a little late to the TLOU party lol. Pedro and Bella's screen chemistry is fantastic, emotional and very believable. This series and many post apocalyptic show reminds me of The Walking Dead quote "Fight the Dead. Fear the Living". You could argue to fear both equally but the "living" are capable of evil & know what they're doing. I kinda want to play the game but I'm an Xbox girl lol.
2 lions were eating a clown. One lion looks at the other and says 'Hey does this taste funny to you?' The other lion looks back and says 'Holy cow a talking lion!"
I think it's really interesting how David believes that CBI brought on a new world order , and he subscribed to it as I'd it's a religion. He tells his followers about " god", but he actually talking about cordyceps. Kind of reminds me of the seraphites.
David in the game had hte exact same intentions as his TV show counterpart. That scene with the broken finger played out exactly the same way in the game, showing that he was...interested...in Eliie.
*Joel was aided by his body's fight-or-flight reaction to the incoming threat from upstairs. In that moment, he was functioning off of an adrenaline spike. Also it should be mentioned, that without 2 vials of penicillin treating his infected wound, I would have called "bullshit" even with the adrenaline. Only because of both of these factors did I firmly find it plausible that Joel was able, with the aid of certain tactics, to neutralize 3 enemy combatants.* *P.S: Joel might have also felt motivated to not fail Ellie in her time of need. I'm sure his daughter's death is an ever-present scar that will hound him for life. No parents should have to bury their children.*
If you replay this episode, I think James wanted to show Ellie some mercy by suggesting to let her go or to kill her if they found her. James knew David would commit horrible abuses with Ellie.
18:34 You are forgetting what happened in the game at this point. Ellie DID bite David in the game, hence why she said "I'm infected, now you are too."
David was the guy in Todd's apartment (one of the fake cops) in El Camino ..... sequel to Breaking Bad - coincidentally he was the pastor of Todd's steakhouse lol
Regarding Joel's recovery and strength: yes, it's a tad forced but I will allow for the artistic liberties since the episode itself is stellar. That actually brings me to how TLOU hardcore fandom will never be happy: MORE clickers! MORE action sequences! MORE violence! While not realizing how numbing and tension free every episode would be if it followed the video game exactly. Joel and Ellie fighting off 20 raiders or a hoard of clickers is fine for an action game but would be actually quite silly to see in sequences with actual actors. Case in point: Joel falling two flights and being pierced by rebar and surviving was fine for a video game but here we are questioning his recovery in this episode.
The scripture passage David delivers is about rebirth, building a better world than the previous one, and overcoming grief and tragedy. This typifies the theme of The Last of Us, which is trying to build a better world than the one ravaged by Cordyceps through Ellie
This episode was brutal but I liked the way it was shot, and I liked the script, too. I appreciate how the show writers lean on the original game material
I feel like the way Joel recovers it wasn’t rushed he barely killed the first dude after that the adrenaline goes crazy and it slowly goes away which is why he stumble so much as the scene plays out as he calms down

The game was best as it's the original and done with motion capture which is even harder.
RN here:
Please finish your entire bottle of prescribed antibiotics, even though you feel much better.
❤
@MM 27 I want to emphasise that fact too. Hence, I said ppl often stop taking antibiotics before the infection is truly gone.
@@staceywalker8699
False!
I SAID PPL STOP TAKING ANTIBIOTICS SOON AS THEY WORK AND ITS A MISTAKE. FFS
@@staceywalker8699 😮
you said
All antibiotics do is shut down your immune system [which they do not] leaving you more susceptible to the same infection [not true]
But I can see now how I misread what you said. Really all caps was overkill.
I am sorry.

The 2 mega shots, the love for ellie, the adrenaline from the rage he had, its very realistic his injury wouldn’t be that much of a bother anymore when he knows he cant let down his 2nd daughter like he did the first
Correction: Ellie 100% bit David in the game. As she uses the line "and now you're infected". Cos she bit him.

They didn't say it but it's hinted he was a violent abuser and he may be into kids.
Wish they put the iconic score underneath Joel's first "baby girl" to Ellie. That killed me in the game but only half choked me up in the show.
The score in the game def made it.... more..
I also think they messed up by not having him stop her like he did in the game.
It felt... it just *felt* more in that way..
I thought the game did it WAY better than this episode.

i love how this show proves something every episode. i've seen people complaining ,,its not brutal enough compared to the game'' and as a die hard fan of tlou who doesnt flinch when horrific scenes are being shown, this ep made me shiver. everytime someone complains, directors prove them wrong. love it, great series, fantastic episode.
Well it's brutal just like the game.
Im glad I wasn’t the only one who gasped when David slapped the girl
The ‘Welcome to Chilis’ had me rolling 😂
When Ellie was cleaving the shit out of that creep, with every strike I was quite literally yelling at my tv “YESSS DO IT AGAIN!!!!! AGAIn!!” It was such a satisfying ending for such a creepy POs
Well it's in the game as well where you get to butcher him complete with blood splatter and glee.
Just finished the episode and was waiting for your video.
That moment when Joel called ellie baby girl, had me in tears.
Love that is penicillin (derived from fungi) that helps joel from wounds sustained by people during a fungus apocalypse.
Hearing Joel say "baby girl" ---ya, I lost it like w/ Bill & Frank's death.
Ellie went full Michael Myers in that scene stab after stab also Ellie killing the original Joel was an extra touch. Fantastic episode i knew what was coming, and yet I still got worried 😂.
That was an outlet for 14 years of pent up rage.
Infected is the catalyst but it’s people that are causing collapse
I kind of think of it like how GOT was about wars etc but you didn’t see that much of it in the show it was about tension drama characters that had you on edge of seat. Can’t really do it with a video game so I enjoy this adaptation for TV
I completely agree! We have enough zombie shows that are non-stop fights, and it works well for games, but for my TV medium I prefer to feel connected to the characters, like I'm on this journey with them!
It's not one or the other. I think they can do both.
Congratulations on 600k, you deserve it. I watch three breakdowns every Sunday JUST for The Last of Us and always check here first as it's the best.
With Ep. 3, this one was awesome! It absorbed all the aspects from the game's narrative, chunking out the exaggerations, while deeping down on David's character.
One more thing: at last some of the game's raw violence without filters!!
I do think Joel healed a little fast but adrenaline can turn you into a superhero
It took days
He wasn't hurt too bad.
@Jon Freeman
>is stabbed in the liver
>"its not too bad"
Nurse here, 2 shots of atb, that recovery is possible.
Ps. Joel has a killer instinct. His fight or flight kicked in.
Perhaps they are celebrating the fact that David is no longer there to torture them
In the game it looked like david was just trying to like choke her to death
In the live action series however it looked like he was gonna do something else that's vile
He was gonna do that as well in the game.. at least, it was also implied.. many times..
It was implied he was going to try to assault her in the game. They hinted this when he says "You have no idea what I'm capable of". Even so, they were much more explicit about it in the HBO series and I'm not complaining in the slightest. I think it added much more to the scene. Belle was absolutely amazing!
Thought that too, but wasn't sure! So was David a pedophile? He definitely acted very creepy with Ellie, besides the cannibalism
no its unfortunately implied in the game when joel tortures one of the men he says "she's alive, she's david's newest pet"
@@emiliaburgos5404 yes David was a pedophile both in the game and show but he’s it’s a little more noticing as he was about to rape her then she killed him
BELLA DID AMAZING! THEY ARE LITERALLY SO GOOD AT WHAT THEY DO!!
I cried too.
I CRIED TOOOOO. But I have no daddy soooo
Joel calling Ellie babygirl had me all 🥹
Although it’s possible that Joel could’ve recovered that quickly, I definitely believe that this episode was a bit rushed in general.
Hannah is one of his "pet". The way David casually assaulted her is very telling.
Yes in future seasons.
Joel.." the way she does right after Joel says "baby girl.."
ik but realistically how would it had worked like how could joel get in if all the doors are locked and only david has the keys

@@jonfreeman9682 I don't remember the laughing
Ellie is...intense. I love Bella's interpretation of her, she seems to have a harder edge in the show. Sweet moment b/w Joel and 'baby girl' at the end. Warmed the cockles of my heart.
Another absolutely great episode!

How is it possible to have written a thoughtful script and compiled the video using footage of the show after an hour of release?
He gets an early screener but can’t post it until after the show has aired.
The others are eating from soup bowls, and he is eating from a large dinner plate. And it seems he also have other stuff on his plate than just meat.
Wait in the game Ellie did bite david 18:40
Yes
Good point about the timing of the healing of the knife wound...miraculous antibiotics are instant cures in sci-fi movies and I suppose that we can stretch our imaginations to overlook this blunder into that genre for the sake of accelerating the plausibility of alertness and strength needed to overcome enemies in an untimely battle.
Congrats on 600k subs
No she did what she says to David after revealing her bite is pulled straight from the game, the line where she says “and now so are you”
She did bite him in the game.
🎉Congrats 600k, been following you early on. My top channel for reviews.
As far as Joel's recovery, "Adrenaline is one hell of a hormone secretion."
17:43 I laughed so hard. Very creative.
I feel like the people who played the game have to remember that this is a show and we are not gonna get a whole 10 minute scene pf injured joel walking around looking for ellie, the show needs to have things at a faster pace to get everything they need in it
Excellent episode. Acting, action, story, depth, subtlety, horror, editing. Felt like I had watched a feature length film... better actually.
Was waiting for this
Idk about that bad of an infection but for high fever "simple" infections like bronchitis that i had after 1 day of antibiotics you are feeling a lot better.
Now THIS was good TV! Ellie played Fruit Ninja with that guys Face and i loved every second 😍
man do i love your contents its like double joy, the episode and your review as a treat
No one thought of Sweeney Todd for Todd's Steakhouse? It was right there?!
No, I think Joel hearing the unfamiliar footfalls for so long was enough to get him enough of an adrenaline rush knowing those feet are there to kill him specifically. It made sense as I was watching and I did think whether it should be feasible in the moment
Ellie chopping him up felt like Kratos in God Of War 3 when he fought his Dad Zeus!!
Question what happened to the rest of the residents of the resort after that dinner scene we never see them again
Seriously, Ellie and David are screaming and fighting and the steakhouse is a raging fire... But no one comes to take a look? Meanwhile Joel has no problem locating them LOL
I honestly surprised you didn't splice in that scene from that one South Park episode.
You know the one I'm referring to.
Love your recaps! Thank you for posting them! 🫡👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
No Joel’s recovery is timely. He’s been sleeping for 2 weeks
Joel fighting off a dozen men after getting impaled in the game makes even less sense so im just gonna let the show slide
David in the game had hte exact same intentions as his TV show counterpart. That scene with the broken finger played out exactly the same way in the game, showing that he was...interested...in Eliie.
LOL, I'm twenty seconds in and I already love your work. Here's a sub with bells on.
Only because of both of these factors did I firmly find it plausible that Joel was able, with the aid of certain tactics, to neutralize 3 enemy combatants.*
*P.S: Joel might have also felt motivated to not fail Ellie in her time of need.
Notice how much bigger David's dinner serving is, compared to his minions.
Bro your videos are amazing!! Always here for the breakdowns 🤝🏾🏆❤️🔥
Lost it at the "hi, welcome to chili's" bit in the intro. A classic meme
Great video, great episode!
Half of Bambi 😂😂 5:05
I feel like the way Joel recovers it wasn’t rushed he barely killed the first dude after that the adrenaline goes crazy and it slowly goes away which is why he stumble so much as the scene plays out as he calms down
