THE LAST OF US (Ophiocordyceps Outbreak, Infected, Factions + Ending) EXPLAINED

  • Hey guys what’s happening? Niyat here with film comics explained. As requested, today we’ll be diving into the HBO adaptation of the Last of Us by Craig Mazin (the creator of the Chernobyl miniseries) and Neil Druckmann (co-president of Naughty Dog, known for his work on Uncharted and The Last of Us.
    It’s safe to say that video game adaptations rarely work. Most productions are doomed from the get go, with companies merely wanting to exploit an IP and the fanbase to turn over some quick cash.
    Then you have the issue of transposing a gaming experience where the viewer is an active participant in the world and story, to one where they are a passive viewer.
    Then there’s problems with cramming 20 hours of gaming content, DLC’s, easter eggs, character motivations and objectives, conflict, and complex storytelling elements into a movie with a run time of 90 minutes.
    Spread across 9 episodes, Season 1 of the Last of Us avoids many of these pitfalls in a mostly faithful adaptation. Like the game, we follow Joel and Ellie in a harrowing journey across the post-apocalyptic wasteland, trying to find the proverbial and symbolic light at the end of the tunnel.
    Traveling across abandoned cities that were destroyed 20 years ago due to a global cordyceps outbreak, the two learn about each other, the new world setting they must traverse, its many factions and organisations vying for power, the cordyceps infection, the infected, in addition to there being hope for a cure.
    In this video, we’re going to breakdown all these elements and more.

      Possibly flaked off onto hands, eyes and mouth of humans during the gathering, storing or transportation of wheat? Farmers and agricultural laborers in many parts of the world don’t have the most ideal of working conditions, or health care. It could be possible that the virus had managed to get into the population this way through wheat rather than the direct cooking/baking of wheat products to be consumed? Interesting thing to note; with Covid-19, it was almost solely spread through touch and proximity, still managing to infect around +80% of humans (by the last metrics I checked). I know that’s a far cry from a fungal infection, but given the proper area and enough time I suppose it is possible.

      (SPOILERS FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN'T FINISHED THE SHOW) I'm pretty sure Marlene knows exactly why Ellie is immune and probably would be willing to try and recreate it by forcing women to get pregnant and than bit as they are giving birth if she wasn't able to get anything from Ellie.

    • @diegochavez7203
      @diegochavez7203 Рік тому +61

      That's the point. While Joel may have ruined all chances of there being a cure, that's the thing. It was just a chance. There was no guarantee a vaccine could be made. The second game flashback shows Marlene being pissed at the surgeon because that's what he told her, that it was a chance, not a guarantee. She cared for Ellie and didn't want her to die for just a "chance," but her sense of duty won her over to let it happen.
      Joel couldn't do that.

      With the fungus growing in the brain it would have most likely killed her regardless, but because it was just a chance one can see why Joel did what he did...you kill her thinking her brain was the key to a cure when it wasn't. And I get the whole “minimizing infected to focus on the human etc etc” HOWEVER I would say if they kept a few more of the big infected battle set pieces from the game (especially the tunnel scene right before the finale) I think it would’ve better highlighted the difficulty of the journey that the game portrayed and made the dramatic & brutal Joel scene at the end hit harder. As it was filmed, the last episode felt abrupt. I enjoyed it throughly, but would love to know if anyway had the same thought on the finale.

Some creatures can survive in boiling water near deep sea hydrothermal vents or hot water springs for example. Others can endure a lack of water for years. There are trees that produce seeds which can survive forest fires and germinate afterwards. Research on the ISS has demonstrated that some micro organisms can survive exposure to the vacuum of Space. There are even organisms that thrive in highly radioactive environments like Chernobyl nuclear power plant. Try and Google Deinococcus radiodurans.
      There are lots of extremophiles on this planet. Yes the show is fictional but I don't think an Infectious organism surviving an oven is totally out of the realm of possibility.

    My biggest, longest issue is that there should have been weeks or months of tests. I mean, fireflies have no problem taking out numerous soldiers and even potentially causing the fall of safe zones, so theoretically they shouldn’t have any problem with holding onto a few, purposely infecting them, and testing cures PRIOR to killing a child for the brain. We got plenty of blood to work with, and in the show we see that the fungus will be in every part of the body, and the brain is simply the “control center.”
    There’s no way they ran all possible tests & blood based cures in the time Joel and Ellie were unconscious.
    Any half decent doc/scientist would do everything possible PRIOR to ending someone’s life on a “maybe.”

    There seems to be a slight need for readjust in the later stages of infection. The bloaters being heard protectors makes sense, runners being strictly a stage to quickly spread makes sense, and stalkers being smartest form tactically spreading the infection makes sense. But clickers and bloaters massacring viable host targets doesn't fit the "infected are vessels for spreading" that the fungus originates from. is it just a case that once at the clicker stage the infection spreading process is seen as "effective" and the zombies switch to elimination of threats to the virus instead of reproduction?

    • @DondonII
      @DondonII 4 місяці тому

      It's more so that the fungus and how it affects it's host still operates on spreading the infection, but it's just going to do it however it sees effective. Now the thing is, clickers can bite and a bite to the neck will kill. But the fungus is already administered at that point, and even if you die. It's going to begin it's lifecycle.
      And it's not as if the booster doesn't throw spore sacks to spread the infection, but once it realizes that's useless. It's going to simply decide to eliminate the threat.

      There is also the DLC mission, unlockables, Factions multiplayer, a lot of replay value for trying to collect the artefacts, letters, conversations etc, which flesh out the story and worldbuilding.
      The second came in for a lot of stick because of a certain part of it's narrative, but if you can see past that, it's even bigger, with longer story and looks absolutely amazing on both PS4 and 5. It also has a lot of replay potential.

    The problem with your assertion of the how the contamination spread and the speed of the initial infection fails to take into account how supply chains and logistic networks actually work.
    The flour would have been kept in storage for a period of time prior to shipment. Shipment itself would have also taken an extended period of time, especially since each destination would have different arrival dates due to travel distances alone.
    Once the flour arrived at it's port of destination, there would have again been a period of storage, with each region having their own allowable arrival and departure schedule, customs policies, and mandatory quarantine practices.
    Once it's out of port, then it's off to distribution centres, all of which are located in different areas of a country. The flour would then be stored again for various periods of time, before being sent out to stores and production facilities. Hell even the food that is produced in factories or bakeries would also be subject to their own supply chain constraints, and stores would also place new arrivals at the back of the stock pile, not ahead of older stock.
    In truth, it would be far more likely that the contaminated flour was in circulation for months, not hours or days before the infection first took hold.
    As the fungus was first being ingested, the infection rate might have been extremely slow, and not the 10min - 24hours following a bite. Those who would have been exposed to airborne particles and had issues filtering the air they breath, may have been the first to turn, while those who had been eating the contaminated foods for days if not weeks, would later turn in a 2nd wave of infections.
    There's no logical way that the world would have been infected as quickly as you're implying.

    As of my knowledge, Australia makes their own flour and they dont require exported flour from Indonesia so the infected cant be spread by products. Also Australia and NZ were on travel bans to Indonesia as a month prior to the outbreak, their was a terrorist attack in Jakarta that made the nearby Commonwealth countries close their borders (if taking real life events prior to outbreak day). @@baneofbanes as of my knowledge, i dont recall Australia importing wheat back in 2003 prior to outbreak day. Australia just recently imported wheat in response to major droughts but importations are very minimal and do not require huge supplies. Even if an outbreak did Happen in Australia, i reckon it would mostly be minimal damage and wouldn’t spread that much unlike the US since low importations wont turn the entire country into runners quickly. Our government is quick to react in response to terrorism and national tragedies. The RAAF and the Australian Army would’ve bombed and shell the impacted areas and isolate them and desalinate the impacted communities. Dont forget that Australia’s border security are really tough to get through if people tried to enter the country illegally and infected. I also found out that cordyceps does exist in Australia but only in FNQ in the tropical rainforests and rainforests in Tasmania far away from people. I believe that the Australian government would be quick to find out that Cordyceps are the cause of infections and their strict regulations would’ve just ended up burning the rainforest and try exterminating all life of cordyceps

    Wouldn't the infected just die of exposure in like a month? A animalistic human would still need to eat as many calories and even more if their stronger than normal humans. Kind of falls apart when they try to be realistic in the show

      Not necessarily no. Because the fungus is keeping the persons body alive and not everyday rules of thermodynamics I believe the energy would be feasible from a different source. If your blood is no longer flowing the same, your organ systems are messed, and your fat stores have been compromised by fungus theyre no longer as viable as energy source. Food can’t be converted to fuel the same, reduced usefulness of food to fungus monsters. Fungus monsters driven by pure instinct, instinct is no longer there to find food.

    I’m really glad they brought Neil as a creative director, I also love how they made sure to check in with him on what should happen instead of taking liberties like so many other video game adaptations COUGH halo COUGH.
    I’m honestly glad that movies/tv shows are bringing the OG crew of each respective game. I think when Arcane came out, it set a new standard for faithful adaptations that have come out(except Halo) like Cyberpunk Edgerunners and now this show. I’m really excited to see how they do season 2 and how Neil might change it since there is a couple things they could change.

    Hey loved your breakdown as always and for another video how about the Guy Ritchie movie Revolver. I saw it the other day and I thought I was either high or drunk because it was really trippy. Needless to say there aren't any really good explained videos so I have come to the master for his take.
