Something I’ve seen that I find super helpful is packing a “first night” box! Put it in your car, right on top of everything else so it’s the first thing to grab. Put stuff like toilet paper, phone chargers, a change of clothes, cat food, anything you’d need to survive one night (or more) in an empty house! Makes it so you dont have to open several boxes for just necessities :)

We’ll be packing everything we need for the first week or two at least in the van! I definitely didn’t think about toilet paper though, so thank you for including that 😂

I LITERALLY HAVE THIS. In my backpack (I don't have a purse, I bus everywhere and buying stuffs I need and paying for bags gets annoying so I shove it my backpack) I have a bug out section....
I live in a tsunami zone and we've been surrounded by extreme news events where Australia has prayed for us fires... its just a thing we do now.

When we last moved from AZ to WA we used a moving company. The thing that helped most was to color code the boxes to the rooms. We used construction paper and assigned a different color to each room.
Red was for the kitchen, green was for the living room, blue was for the master bedroom, and yellow was for the guest room/office. We used painter's tape to attach a sheet of construction paper to the door of the room using the appropriate color. With each box that had a piece of red paper taped to it, the mover's helpers knew that box went into the kitchen because we taped a piece of red paper to an upper cabinet door. Boxes with blue paper went to the room with blue paper on the door. No colored paper on the box? No problem. Those went into the garage.
Hope Chewy and Yoda do well during the trip. They will probably be very demanding and require lots of petting and snuggles. Have they been microchipped?

This! When I moved a couple years ago we had a similar system. Each rooms color was based on the walls of the room. So my room was purple. Each box had a color written on it. The exceptions were the kitchen and sunroom since those were obvious.

Safiya Nygaard just posted a moving vlog a little bit ago of them moving from LA to North Carolina and they took their cat with them in the car! They had a litter box in the car and set the cat up his bed on the backseat and would let him get acclimated at every stop! So they'd feed him in the morning and in the evening when they would stop at a hotel, and then scoop the litter every time they stopped!

    • @PlantBasedBride

Oh awesome! We don’t think our cats would use the litter in the car but we have a pop up pen and a pop up litter box to set up at frequent stops ❤️

For the tabs, I think various shades of coffee would be cool. You could make the darker shades stand for stronger brews and have those tabbed pages be the ones you think are the most time-consuming tasks.

When we had to drive our cat halfway across the country, we had a pillow on some bin in the very back of the car, and he found his way back there and cuddled up on it where he could look out the back window the whole way. If your cats like looking out windows like ours do, it really helps keep them entertained throughout the long days!:)
Gray or Brown ombré could be really cool for the tabs, but when I think brown ombré for coffee I can only think of boxes 📦.
    Good luck with your move!!

Hello Elizabeth. Congratulations on your new adventure. We moved into our current home when my daughter was 5 months old. One thing that I did when packing was pack things according to where I would want them to land in our new home. I labeled the boxes so anyone who helped unload would know where to put them and we wouldn't have to open the boxes and guess where to shuffle them around. We only moved a few blocks so I can't help you too much with making a cross country move. My best advise is to remember that it is easy to get overwhelmed so breaking it down into smaller more managable tasks might lessen the anxiety that moving can produce. Wishing you and your husband the best!

We just made a cross country move in December, with three cats. It was also a three-day drive. I highly recommend talking to your veterinarian to get some sedatives for your cats. Not only for their comfort, but for your sanity. Best of luck!

I had to move my cat across the US twice and here's what my mom and I did, but keep in mind you may have to adjust to what your cats need:
I was in the back seat with her so she had full roam of the back seat, this may not be ideal if someone isn't back there with them or you don't have a way to block them from getting under the driver's feet. She hates being in a carrier so we would let her move around while we drove. If your cats hate being in carriers see if you can find like a large kennel or carrier that you can put in the back so they are safe and it doesn't seem as crushing as a cat carrier. Her litterbox was on the floor board but she preferred to use it when we stopped. Make sure your box doesn't have a cover/lid on it so they can easily get in and out. Put a mat or something under it so you can catch any litter that comes out. She had a water bowl that she had access to the entire time but she only preferred to eat/drink whenever we stopped. Put a mat under those too in case of spills. Before you get out make sure you know where your cats are. Either put them in a carrier or have the back seat area made so they can't just jump in and out easily. My cat never offered to jump out so we would just look for where she was before we went out and when I needed out from the back seat I would just place her on the opposite side of where I opened the door. But at that point that had been her second cross country trip so she knew what to do. Oh and make sure you have all their vet records on hand during the drive! Have something with identification on them if you can (microchip or collar) in case they do get out.
A couple of people have mentioned taking them on short car rides before you move, def do that. My cat didn't get to do that aside from going to the vet so it was a major learning process for her. She ended up doing fine but with two cats I def recommend taking them on short car rides first to see what you may have to keep in mind for the 3 day trip. Try to find hotels that are pet friendly along your stops so that they aren't trapped in the car without you when you spend the night somewhere. Really as long as you don't stress over it, your cats should be okay. Best of luck!

I like the coffee colors or greys idea. I recommend a bag of a week's worth of stuff. Anything really delicate or precious going with you in the vehicle. And then using it for the new house and any house projects. To help with ease of packing I started with off season clothes and stuck breakable stuff in the middle. As well as things that were not needed right now. Set up a room to put the boxes in. I would paint anything in the new house before you move in if you can. As well as a quick cleaning so it is easier to deal with. Good luck!

Thank you so much for this! I didn't watch it when it came out, solely because moving out of my parents' home and into an apartment with my bf was only a very vague possibility in May. Now it's very real and happening, like, next weekend (it all fell into place this week). We found the PERFECT wheelchair-friendly apartment. 10 min away from my parents, across the street from my doctor's office, closets and bathrooms I can wheel into instead of getting out of my wheelchair or asking someone for help, and stoves I can reach so I can cook independently (literally almost cried when I realized I could see and reach the stovetop. I'm 28 and have NEVER been able to do that). I'm so excited but also slightly terrified. My boyfriend's current job takes him out of town constantly, so I'm going to be learning to run a home largely on my own for a while. I need aaaaallll the moving spreads to get myself ready. Any advice for this next step in my journey would be welcome!

    - to fix or to buy in new apartment (could be light bulb with references, to other bigger stuff)
    - expense tracker dedicated to moving. It would also give you a more precise budget once you will be moving to an house.

When I moved with my cats, we ended up leaving them fairly loose. We had a harness and leash on each of them (they come out for walks with us, so they are both used to it), and they were able to roam and choose their own favorite spot. We just left pillows and blankets that they liked around the car so they had plenty of comfy places. Whichever person wasn't driving was just responsible for making sure the cats didn't end up distracting the driver, or getting anywhere near their feet. Good luck!!!

Cat-related tips: Check with your vet to see what they advised for your cats (there are some relaxing "scents" that might be worth trying). Of course, if you could get them used to the car before the long journey that would be best (even just sitting in the back seat petting them without going anywhere so they get used to the space and smell). Introducing your cats to their carry-on early is also a good thing. In case your cats get sick, keep towels and sealable plastic bags on hand during the trip.

When I move I also do different lists of items to donate, sell or trash before packing, and I do a timeline for moving day which includes what time I leave, what time I plan to arrive and where I’m staying that night, etc. Also I second what someone else wrote about a bucket list of your new city! For the tabs I think a gradient of gray or brown would be nice.
I would love to see your wedding bullet journal spreads. I’ve skimmed through your old videos and I don’t see any specific to your wedding planning. I bought a special bujo, searched tons of wedding planning spreads and made a list of what I want to include, now I just need to start!

My husband and I are looking to buy our first home soon so this couldn't be more perfect timing!
I had a similar idea for the boxes, I was going to label each box with "kitchen 1" "clothes 4" etc, and use Microsoft onenote(just so it can be more dynamic than pen and paper) to list the contents. I wanted to put the actual room on the box because friends are helping us, so i know it will be super helpful if the boxes are put in the correct room!

something we did that helped when we moved from the Yukon to nova scotia was to keep a journal or log of different things including anything that affected our animals so we could be more aware of it and it also kept us alert to what was happening. things like a daily picture or otherwise helped mind you we needed two weeks so a little longer than your planning. the other thing we wished we did was track drive times and manage who took the wheel when.

Congrats and good luck! I'd suggest you take with you in your car 1 box with things like toilet paper, hand soap, 2 cups, 2 plates, 2 sets silverware, 1 pan, dish soap, dish towel, trash bags, paper towels, cleaning supplies, bed sheets - all the things you're going to want immediately upon arrival and might take a while to find in the sea of moving boxes. And sometimes the moving trucks get delayed, so you might even want to know of local hotel in case your furniture hasn't arrived (or pack sleeping bags in your car) and you need an alternate 1st night plan! Create list w/addresses of local stores you'll need in new community: Target, Home Depot, grocery's, etc. Safe travels!

I moved from Japan to Australia at the end of last year and made some tracking pages in my planner too it definitely helped keep things on track and manageable!!
One thing I did was make sure I had a list of items I was planning to sell or discard, and what places I could donate them to.
Another key thing for me was an overall timeline and day planner where I could write out when specific things needed to be done by, and then plan out when to do other tasks, that was super helpful! Eg some things can be packed way sooner than others but you still need to use some things, so having that mapped out.
I also had a list of people I wanted to make sure I caught up with and things I wanted to do in Tokyo before I left!!
I don't know how practical it is given the volume of your things, but it drove me a bit crazy a couple of months before and after moving not being able to locate specific things so having a fairly detailed list of key items you want to keep track of and which box they are in!
Oh and for the colour of your tabs I like the idea of a brown to tie in with the coffee cover, and gold lettering to pick up on the coffee icon, I think it would add a bit of lux ☺️
Good luck with the move 💕

  • @ryttu3k

Best of luck!! Some suggestions for the roadtrip/arrival list: tea and coffee supplies, bottled water, non-perishable snacks, cat food and kitty litter (and the trays and bowls!), plus toys and any comfort items, toilet paper, cleaning supplies (at least a basic all-purpose spray and some wipes), spare chargers, changes of clothes, lightbulbs, stuff like that.
    For the kitties, I recommend designating a room as the Cat Room when you arrive. I used my own room and my boy spent the first several days in an (open) cupboard, full of cushions and blankets. Was very useful having a place for him to make his own while he got used to all the new smells and stuff. Unfortunately I don't have any recommendations for the drive itself, we only moved two hours away XD;;
Agreeing with the ombre browns to match the coffee theme!
    Good luck!!

For traveling with your cats, I cannot recommend ENOUGH the use of bachflower drops. You can get them at any holistic market, they make them for humans and pets, it’s a natural relaxant. I gave them to my cat and dog when I moved cross country and it super chilled out my cat and had my dog snoring! Both animals took it well and seemed to like the taste. My normally very loud cat barely made a peep until day three of the drive.

Would love to see a brown/beige gradient on the tabs. I would definitely keep this journal browney and goldey and stay FAR awat from grey. The cover is just so warm that using a cold colour like grey would just totally ruin the aesthetic.
And by the way maybe look into creating a down payment savings tracker type of spread or like a spread where you and hubby sit down and list what you are looking for in a house. This could help weed out the/any overwhelming feeling of looking for a house.

Making the tabs a light, neutral color might help pick them out of background without making them too glaring or distracting. Just a pale gray to make them distinct.

When we move we always keep a running list of things that we will need to buy for the new place (shower curtains, cleaning supplies). As you pack you will find that you might want to throw something away instead of moving it (example: really old baking sheets, Tupperware with no lids, etc.) and will have to eventually replace them. Things like that. :)

When I moved from Nevada to Indiana a 2500 mile trip with my two cats, I bought an extra large folding dog kennel that was made from tent type material. It took up the whole back seat of my four door Jetta but I was able to put a litter tray and food bowls and blankets in it for them. They had a spill proof bowl for water and I had stacked a few shelf boards under the kennel so it sat stable in the back seat. Granted they will take up the whole back seat and you would need a four door car at least, unless you go for an suv type car. Either way they were safe and secure and had a litter tray so no need to take them out to do their business with a leash and this way no accidents of escaping

Wish I'd been bullet journaling when we moved 5 years ago, I did the same thing regarding the box numbers and inventory in a standard notepad. Cat wise I found it easier to travel with her in a harness with a lead (so she couldn't get on my husband whilst driving etc), had her in the footwell or on my knee, Pud was so much calmer than she would of been in her cage (was only an hours drive and one cat mind), she was a super 🌟. We ended up seating outside our new house for 6 hours because our estate agent messed up with the keys 🙄.

I've heard that it's helpful to bring a blanket or something the cats spend a lot of time on/around, since it would have their scent and give them something familiar to put them more at ease.

In Germany we have something called "Nachsendeauftrag", which loosely translates into "forwarding service". Maybe you could ask your local post office, if they offer something similar. Because even if you forget to inform some companies or people (or sometimes even friends, whoopsie) about your new address, it forwards every letter/order to your new address 6 whole month long. After the 6 month everyone not having your new address simply doesn't deserve it 🤣 I wish you the best of luck for the upcoming part of your lives. 🍀

i love this! this is such a good idea and i hope that this will destress you as you move across the country! i vote that the tabs are different colors. i tend to associate items with colors and if i need to quickly reference something, i'll think of the color (like if i need to go to j in my journal, i know that there is a red sparkly tab for jan). good luck.

Be sure to leave plenty of time for cleaning once everything is packed up and out of your home. Last time I moved I planned one day per room (counting on "some rooms take more time than others"), but truthfully I could have used one extra day for cleaning the oven, behind the washer/dryer that we took with us and other miscellaneous stuff I forgot. 💖🌞🌵😷

Seeing this now and oh my, it resonates so much with my own situation! I've been sick at home for a little over 9 months now (no Corona, thank goodness) and this will help me so much for moving ourselves (because we need to be closer to our inner circle people to help us out) - considering I have verrry little energy and have mental health issues.
I bought a journal for this yesterday, before I saw your video just now!
Love love love that you shared this so I can use this as inspiration!
    Good luck with your move!!

I few things I remember after moving house, don’t underestimate the amount of time that you think you’ll need for packing. Unless you’re someone who is seriously into minimalism, the amount of stuff you may find yourself packing into boxes or disposing of, whichever is appropriate, can be very overwhelming.
To get a head start, maybe pack anything you definitely don’t need to use as early as possible. Things like pictures or photographs.
Also, if you own a lot of books pack them in several small boxes, not a large one. Otherwise they could be too heavy to lift.

the box inventory spreads are genius!! way easier than writing every single item on each box. I'm moving at the end of summer and will definitely keep this in mind. wishing you the best of luck with everything!
also! I think a gold ombre would look nice on the tabs, but it's not my journal. :)

Re: traveling with cats. Figure out a container for them. Consider the containers as their seatbelts. If you were to crash your car, you don't want cats flying around the inside of your car or hitting the windshield. ... Will they travel well in one container or do you need two. (Remember to consider how well they get along under stressful situations.) Plan for their containers to sit in the middle of the car so the can get plenty of heat or a/c. I would cover the containers with a light fabric like a curtain (sheets have a tight weave that restricts air flow) to limit their vision on the sides and back. They might find comfort being able to see you. Be sure the containers are big enough for them to stand up, stretch and turn around. Start now getting them used to going in and out (at first) maybe feed them in there. Then little by little have them spend more and more time in there by closing the door. By the time your trip comes they should at least be comfortable sleeping all night being locked up in there. 💖🌞🌵😷
Bring plenty of paper towels for accidents. I know how you feel about paper towels, but on a 3 day trip, it's very difficult to store cleaning rags with vomit until you can get to a place to wash them out properly... for just this once buy yourself a roll of paper towels.

I have moved several times (@ 12 times). The last time was @ 3 weeks ago.
A box inventory is a great idea! (definitely take pics/video of each box). I've used a letter/color system (letters for me- colors for movers). Movers were told the meaning of the colors at the destination home - NOT before. I alternate between using colored labels and colored markers. This inventory will come in handy years after a move (for boxes left unpack or boxes put into storage). I used neon markers &/or tape (i.e. duck tape) to indicate fragile boxes - some movers need a gentle reminder to handle some boxes with care.
It would probably be a good idea to start taking short car trips with your pets. And talk to your vet. I'm sure they'll have some suggestions.
I read an article years ago, it said that moving was in the top 5 things that can cause a disruption in a marriage -yikes! Don't know if this is still true. But with good organization, a lot of the stress can be avoided.
I never thought about using a journal to house all of my lists. I normally used a clipboard that holds my lists, inventory charts (chart has all the appropriate checkboxes - your key), labels & pens. Next time I'll try a journal. Good Luck with your move.

From what ive heard about traveling w cats, from vanlifers etc, i heard its good to “train/practice” w getting them used to driving. Maybe start w a small trip around the block in ur car, for a week or two until they feel comfortable..
then to a store or park, etc, and reward them w treats each trip. Then u can do a maybe weekend trip w them etc.. until they are ready for bigger trips

    I'll be moving this year, but I don't have a lot of stuff (I'm fairly minimalistic except for my skeletons, books, and green Starbucks cups) so I know I just have about 4 boxes worth of stuff, but I understand most people aren't like me. Most people have a lot of stuff, a lot of clothes and jewelry, dishes, bedding, a lot of various things and seeing hearing about moving really makes me want to go through everything I own and get rid of more stuff XD I think I might tbh. Limit my coffee cups, my clothes, my bedding (my bedding set is the ONLY thing I own I change with the seasons), and my 'other stuffs' lol. I think I may do that this week. :}

I´m kind of going to move - I´m going to do a exchange semester in china. So I will not take boxes with me, but I will most likely pack everything in boxes and store them in the cellar while some else is living in my apartment. So this video is kind of usefull.
Regarding the tabs - I wouldn´t paint them. The spreads are very lightly colored at the moment and I think any kind of solid color would distract. I would outline them and maybe add a few of the elements you added throughout the setup.

I've made three cross-country moves and the latest one with a cat. Helpful for me each time was to only pack what I wanted to keep and then pile donations/trash in a specific area of the home. Having lavender essential oil on a tissue within the car helped my kitty stay calm during the drive and also helped the car not to smell when she used her litter box or we had fast food while driving :) Hope this information helps.

Hey dear just got done with a move myself. Piece of advice for your cat's while our move was only 3 hours vs 3 days, if you've got an anti-anxiety meds for your cats give them a half a dose not a full dose. We learned that lesson the hard way because my oldest cat decided to hide for four days straight. She had a bad trip both figuratively and literally. Best of luck with your move and do your best not to overthink it okay? Much Love and hugs!

Hey :) Thank your for sharing this video! It really helps getting an idea of how to plan things out for my own move. I've only moved with my dog twice (which was veeery easy) and we're again moving soon. But back to topic: I'm not a cat-expert, but maybe you could buy a Box for your cats in "Dog Dimensions"... So that both of them have enough space in it and have each other for the drive. In case something falls over, on the seats or where you have your cats, they remain safe and do not get hurt. You could also put the box in your current home to let the cats get used to it ^^ There are herbs that help dogs to calm down. I don't know if there is something equal for cats... And maybe search for Vets across the way, if anything happens (which I hope will never be the case!). I hope that everything will go well and you'll be happy in your new home!

So I guess it’s not totally what your channel is about, but could you talk more about how you identified all the things you needed to do leading up to the move and how you planned out when they’d need to get done by? Breaking down and prioritising tasks is something I struggle it’s so much!

In this case I watched a bunch of UA-cam videos giving moving tips and googled packing lists amd moving checklists to get an idea of what other people would recommend from experience. I also added tasks specific to our situation as far as buying our van and getting the cats ready to go! For the timeline I worked backwards from the moving day and tried to front load as many tasks as possible to accommodate for things going wrong/taking longer than we expect/last minute tasks. I hope that helps a bit ❤️
