As a 58 year old freelancer from halfway across the world who's been reading and collecting DC for five decades -- great documentary. Personally, I loved the 60s and 70s art and could never really fathom or appreciate the new age changes or shifts from the original context of Superman - long hair, ponytail etc.
The first superhero and also the most powerful superhero, he's such a great character. A man who doesn't use his abilities to make himself better but to help those around him no matter how much they turn against him
I remember as a kid seeing Superman with my best friend at the time .. we were Superman comics fans and it was so real so amazing to see the character come alive for us .. it was such a monumental achievement at the time.. not quite matched until the first Spider-Man movie ...
I remember watching this on TV around the time Superman Returns came out. I hadn't seen Smallville yet, even 5 years after it premiered, or the 40's cartoon, but this got me interested in checking them out. A SUPER documentary worthy of the first and greatest superhero of them all! I remember this documentary back when it first came out in 2006. I was enthralled as a youngster to learn about Superman's origins in the real world for the first time through this, and it still gives that same thrill, more that 15 years later. In retrospect, the only thing about this documentary I would be critical of is how little coverage the Death and Return of Superman story arc and the DCAU are given. It's clear that Bryan Singer (who also made this doc, in addition to Superman Returns), cares more about the live action Superman material, and does not give much thought to the comics or animation (aside from the first appearance and the 40's cartoon). Granted, more in-depth docs about the Death and Return of Superman story arc and the DCAU exist both on this channel and their respective DVDs, but it would have been nice if some more attention were given to those significant milestones in this documentary itself. Like many of my fellow commenters, I too want to see an update of this documentary to include material like the other 7 seasons of Smallville, Man of Steel/DCEU, New 52, Rebirth, Jon Kent, etc. Plus, how Superman impacted the creation of all the other Superheroes that came after him. That's just your opinion. For me Superman is too unrealistic. How can a man with no wings fly? How can a guy with human physiology be harder than steel?
@@HypnoticHollywood I'm saying the guy resembles a human. If his body was as hard as steel it couldn't resemble a human. There is no species that possesses a body that is hard as steel because hit wouldn't be able to move. There are species with hard armour like a turtle or a mussel, but the rest of the body is soft.
Man, 2006 was such a great year to be a Superman fan. While Superman Returns was ultimately a disappointment for me, I'll always cherish the time leading up to it and just the hype and anticipation I had. You had Bryan Singer's journals, the teaser, the trailers, this documentary all leading up to it. I took my entire family and girlfriend at the time to see the movie opening night as it was going to be my first time seeing Superman on the big screen and I wanted to experience that with everyone. Again, the movie wasn't what I hoped it would be, but still a great experience. Then later that year on November 28 not only did Superman Returns come out on dvd, but so did all the Reeve films in that awesome tin set with a bunch of extra features and The Richard Donner Cut of Superman II. Pretty sure Lois and Clark, The Adventures of Superman, and Superman the Animated Series all had dvd releases that year, too. Not to mention the Superman Returns video game. Sadly, another disappointment, but that's neither here nor there. The hype train really was running on all cylinders for Superman that year.
I personally loved and still love Superman Returns. Yes he was not around for the kid, but he was not aware of his existence. Brandon was awesome in the movie. I love the new Superman also with Henry Cavil and like the idea that he might have a son with Loise ( not sure if spelling is correct).
I love Superman dearly. Christopher Reeve 1978 Superman movie was the very first movie that I saw in a Philippine refugee camp. I was bewildered and just amazed as I was watching. I really believed in what he stood for and the morals he installed in many of us. It is hard to be pure and alway upholding a righteous morals, that is the very reason why I love this character. I just have one request to the writers, please STOP making him more powerful then the last writers. If you guys keep doing that, it makes it harder to write a Superman story!
I've watched this documentary of Superman 1000 times, if not more since I got it back in 2006. It came with my Superman ultimate Collection. I LOVE how well its made!!! The one's that have come after are ok, but not as well put together.
1:13 After he says "Easy Miss, I've got you," Lois responds with "You've got me? Who's got YOU!?" I was eleven when I saw that live in a theater it was awesome as was his trying to change in a 1978-style phone booth.
What do you think got him started in comics my man!! It was YOU!!! Be well and read my spiel above, lemme know whatcha think??...Will Warner bros heed my advice??
@@jeremyriley1238 oh I'm sure there would be superheroes, we've always had our stories about people with superhuman abilities all the way back to Homer's Illiad & many stories even older (probably hundreds lost to time we may never know about). We just might not have the same ones we have today (but possibly could have some of them). It is fun to play the "what if" game sometimes.... if Superman never came out & Wonder Woman or Batman still did & became the inspiration for some of Spiderman's story would his costume have been black & gray & instead of being a small guy in a newspaper office would he have been a billionaire with a secret Spiders Den or maybe he came from a hidden island of godlike beings. No telling what would have changed but no doubt that we would have superheroes still. It's just part of human fantasy for over 3000 years already.
A superb documentary. I actually bought the DVD of this documentary when released in 2006. However I would sure like to see an updated one like this because Superman has come a long way since 2006 with the DCEU movie series, Supergirl tv series, Superman & Lois, a whole bunce of animated movies and talks of a new Superman movie series.
Thank you so much for streaming this! To the world's greatest Superhero! The man of steel! Not diue to size of strength but strength of heart! He who inspires us all to be heroes! Superman!

Great Documentary, i grew up watching George Reeves and loved it back then but I liked Man of Steel best, maybe because it wasn't trying to be funny but it was still fun and more interesting that the older versions.
When I heard that one of the most iconic tv stars of my youth John Schneider of the Dukes of Hazzard was being teamed up with Annette O'Toole who was the most memorable embodiment of Lana Lang I remember as the Kent's on Smallvile I loved the fact that O'Toole also knew the mythology quite a bit, who'd of thought? I was over the moon with those too and probably said to myself back then whose more perfect then these two? Then over a decade later Kevin Costner and Diane Lane casted.....Yessssss!!!! It was kind of cool to see Lex and Clark as friends in their youth. There's a part of me that would love the to see the to of them play the characters as adults after Luthor really become his arch enemy and the ultimate threat to mankind. Seeing Reeve on Smallville as an obvious nod to Stephen Hawking was just Incredible!

This was the best video I've ever seen of Superman's history it brings back memories from when I was a child and it's very nice to go through memory lane and remember when I saw all the movies. Thank you for making this video in UA-cam
In four decades of my life as a fan following Superman, it's my very first time to know the whole history of this comic character from the moment he was created in DC (Detective Comics, I didn't know the whole name as far as I am concerned but only now). I remembered in the late 70's to early 80's, I was introduced to Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman and Robin through the TV Cartoon series, Super Friends from our old CRT TV set with V antenna. I have this "Aha! Ok, I see" moment when I found out that there was a first Superman on TV during the 50's era by the name of George Reeves ✝️ (who are not related to Christopher Reeves) but who committed suicide (may his soul rest in peace) and watching those throwback black and white videos made me truly appreciate and understand how the character evolved from the comics to television. Even before, I can say depression is already a silent killer, even the first Superman actor wasn't spared. Christopher Reeves ✝️ was the perfect Superman ever who graced the big screen before the modern day superhero Henry Cavill came in for the new millennium. What a treasured moment seeing the wet underarms of Mr Reeves in his "S" costume during his first audition in London no less. This is a priceless documentary film among the fans seeing those never before seen videos of the said actor. I am such a fanatic along with Wonder Woman from Lynda Carter in the 80's to Gal Gadot. The perfect build, gorgeous face and the blue eyes of Christopher Reeves was truly captivating both on the big or small screen. You will feel truly mesmerized by his charm like your prince charming who rescue you in your dreams. Thank you Warner Bros. Entertainment for The Amazing Story of Superman documentary tribute to #Superman as we #StayHome #WithMe, Myself and I. 👏👏👏

There is no species that possesses a body that is hard as steel because hit wouldn't be able to move. There are species with hard armour like a turtle or a mussel, but the rest of the body is soft.
I know he gets a lot of backlash, but he is my favorite comic book character by far.
Same
Superman gets backlash??
I don't think so
@@paulpolpiboon9535
Yes, he does. Unless you're saying that people don't say he's unrelatable and too perfect, and too overpowered, etc.
Agree!
The people who give him backlash forget he's a superhero acting like a superhero.
Thats ashame that you truly believe superman returns was a disappointment. I dont get it, it embodies superman PERFECTLY
@@ssj2camaro21 An absentee father does not embody superman.
@@pdrey100 no it doesn’t, however he was not aware that he was a father.
I'm too emotionally involved in this franchise. Honestly, who tears up at the beginning of a documentary?!
You’re not the only one......
A puddy cat

This character captures the imagination and heart of goodwill!
Hello! Me! I was a mess.
Me and you anyway
World need Superman movies
Yes
Agreed
Yes!
Count me in!
We need more. Especially in this trying times.
I still have this dvd all the way back from 2006!
Such memories...
Superman Returns was my first Superman movie experience
Superman:
Easy, miss. I've got you.
Lois Lane:
You, you've got me? Who's got you?
Perhaps the best lines in cinema history.
Only to Superman fans...Im only watching this cause Im bored

@@lasthope3237 How original.
Gonna have to do better than that, buttercup.
This video is awesome! Perfectly captures the essence of Superman and why he is and should be relevant. Thanks for posting, Warner Bros.
1:13 After he says "Easy Miss, I've got you," Lois responds with "You've got me? Who's got YOU!?" I was eleven when I saw that live in a theater it was awesome as was his trying to change in a 1978-style phone booth.
Superman is the granddaddy of all superheroes, Long Live Superman,
A forever icon 🦸♂️
Let's hope you guys NEVER get your hands on him.

Even stan lee was a fan of me?......rip stan lee .....
What do you think got him started in comics my man!! It was YOU!!! Be well and read my spiel above, lemme know whatcha think??...Will Warner bros heed my advice??
If you ever actually picked up a comic book and read it you would know these are things aren’t created in a vacuum
TBH, Supes, without you, there would no other superheroes (even Batman would not exist).
I think he had to recognize the massive influence... but yeah he did sound enthusiastic. RIP Stan.
Hearing Joker talking about Superman is everything
I hope Warner Bros. does another Amazing Stories of Superman documentary for DC Comics and the History Channel
"It's a bird, it's a plane, it's" our always justice protecting hero and unstoppable Daily Planet best pals. Stay safe everyone!
Thank you so much for streaming this! To the world's greatest Superhero! The man of steel! Not diue to size of strength but strength of heart! He who inspires us all to be heroes! Superman!
And that's why he's the actual true leader of the justice league as DC has seemed to forgotten these days.
RIP Stan Lee and Margot Kidder. The comic book world is lost without you. 🌹
Same here RIP Noel Neill and Jack Carson
Moving and emotional.. Childhood memories.. Superman forever!!
SUPERMAN is the greatest superhero of all time. I don't care what others might say he is with out a doubt the most kindness man to ever live and that''s what truly makes him special!
Superman will always be number 1
Right on👍🏾

What about Henry Cavill ??
cavil is the worst one .not his fault .hes horribly written he has no character ,no personalities at all .no character development just a bland boring prop with just the look .relatability and likability factor is down right 0
This was the best video I've ever seen of Superman's history it brings back memories from when I was a child and it's very nice to go through memory lane and remember when I saw all the movies.

Iconic themes will come and go, but there will never ever be a theme more iconic than John Williams' Superman theme 🦸🏻♂️🎶🙌🏼
I don’t have any idols.. I don’t care for celebrities but I’ll tell you.. I love my heroes, my Superman. Got the symbol tatted on the back of my neck 🔥
Closest I got to having a supe Tat was the superman bubblegum transfers that you licked and stuck on your arm as a kid back in the 80s LOL 🦸
This was a great overview of the character and its evolution thru the years. It was a renewal of affection for George and Christopher Reeve and the subsequent actors portraying the man and boy of steel! Nice to see some of the original cast and the outtakes at the end were wonderful. Nice time!
George Reeves and Christopher Reeve were not related, hence why their surnames are slightly different.
this is a fantastic documentry that explores everything to do with supermans history and as a fanboy it had me smilin at reular intervals and lauhing out loud a great piece of work
My number one all time favorite comic book hero.
Superman big superhero the history 🐐👏🏻👏🏻
Firstly great documentary! Really well analysed and edited!
Secondly - it seems like John Williams is responsible for so many movies being turned up to an eleven! He helped Star Wars and Superman become Hollywood game changers!
Thirdly - I feel like Margot Kidder is similar to Carrie Fisher. Anyone else agree?
Yep, without John Williams, neither film would have reached the heights that they did.
John Williams is sheer musical imagination. He knows exactly what music images need.
Still gives me chills to watch him.
I'm a huge fan of superman
He really is the idea of what a hero is
And it's not because of his powers or him being a symbol but its because he is always trying to do the right thing. Now that's awesome 👍
This was recommended to me yesterday during quarantine!
Forever superman
There might be 5 millones Heroes from Comics, Anime yet Superman would be the Hero who owns my heart.
i like superman. i love superman my favorite superhero from dc comics.
Tim Burtons Batman is same age as me. So after i startes to look at things i fell in love for Batman, i knew there is Superman and my beloved granny love him. But its bc of Zack Snyders Man of Steel i fell in love with Superman and after MoS i cant get enough of him! And in this hard times i thing we need him more than ever! Thanks DC, your 80 years of work change my life... For me its more than art and gr8 literature its part of my soul, i asume its like for old greecks their mythology, but DC its for all ppl in the world ❤️
33:00 The true originator of breaking the fourth wall thank you George Reeves miss you, and still love your Superman.
When I watched this on t.v. until I bought it and the mention of the accident Reeve had and his passing I cried and still do. His accident and passing is a wound I will never recover from. It's a hole in my heart
Kevin Spacey just broke the fourth wall in this documentary by mentioning himself.
Even though I love the documentary, I was expecting him to say that “lex luthor was played by me.”
Goosebump overload
technically this was from 2006 superman returns and this documentary was really great
Brandon Routh was so perfect for the role, but his talent was wasted with Brian Singer. It could have been epic.
Did you see Crisis on Infinite Earths? They brought him back as Superman and he was brilliant.
@@timrob12 No he wasn't. That crossover was terrible.
@David Smith I do agree. Reeve Superman and Routh Superman should be different people.
@David Smith You kinda misunderstood. And Reeve was in it, yes AND no. The way they planned it, Brandon Routh's Superman was supposed to be the Christopher Reeve Superman. However, I personally think that Reeve and Routh should be on different earths and not the same character.
@David Smith No problem.
I love Superman!
