I'm 35 and used to rush home from school to watch this on fox and I still love it to this day. I've seen just about every animated and live action comic book adaption including all of the DCAU movies and yet I still have to say that this series was the best one. The only other possible contenders are the 90s Spider-Man series and x-men. Society and culture was really changing in the 90s,you see this in every aspect of society then. I didn't realize then how lucky I was to grow up during that era.
I watched this as a kid and I really liked it. I watched again as an adult, and I realized it is the greatest animated series ever made for me. I discovered more things in it as an adult and appreciate way more. The darkness and noir of it is epic. Stands the test of time!

This show made me care about the story line more than the flashiness of comics when I was little. It truly is a masterpiece. Loved it! Also DC has great music even on this documentary.
I love how this series is almost film noir in looks with the gritty colour palette and moody shadow, coupled with brilliant voice acting an animation and this is the best telling of batman that’s ever been produced
This show was my childhood. Rewatching this show, brought back my love for comics and superheroes that I let go in like middle school. I will never get tired of BTAS, literally the BEST animated superhero series of all time.
I never grew up with the series, but this year I finally caught up. What can I say...I understand 100 percent why the show is so popular. It's one of the best interpretations of the Dark Knight I've ever seen. The stories, the music, the atmosphere, and the amazing voice actors give this series so much heart. I can really recommend every Batman fan to watch this great series. Thank you to everyone who made the series what it is. Long live Batman: The Animated Series.
I would’ve loved to hear the voice clips of Tim Curry’s Joker voice in this documentary. What’s it gonna take to get WB to release those voice clips from their vault?
Hi. Former Fox Kids head of animation art here. If you’re curious as to what Tim Curry’s Joker voice sounded like, watch Fox Kids “Peter Pan and the Pirates”. Tim played Captain Hook and the voice was very similar. Which is one of the reasons (I was told) he was re-casts.
The way they spoke about Shirley Walker was just incredible. You can see just how perfect she was for the show. Amazing composer, talent, and a gift to us all.
This show has the best batman in kevin conroy, the best joker in mark hamill. It gave us Harley Quinn, Renee Montoya and a re-inventive version of mister freeze.
I'm 32 and two years ago I saw the first 3 seasons on DVD and I grabbed them and I can say that it is even better now. The music, the simple and effective animation and incredible story telling. I really feel emotional connection with some of the bad guys, especially Mr. Freeze and I loved it when they talked about the writing of his backstory. It's so cool to see how this series did Mr. Freeze WAY better than anyone else. He's poetic, tragic and just badass. Drunken rant over.
One thing I loved about batman particularly in this series was how the cap wrapped around his body. It looked awesome seeing him move like hes gliding across the floor as his cape is around him. The way the city was drawn. The detail . The sky. The voices. The acting. And one thing this series has done that no other animated series has EVER done is touched on a emotional level. When these villains were doomed with their fate being turned into a villain most cases accidentally you felt bad for them. I'll never forget the clayface origins when you see the shadow on the wall of then dumping the mud down his throat. The gasps and cries for help than when his friend finds him. Was truly sad
I loved this series. I remember being blown away by how cinematic it felt. I actually got up super early in the weekend just to watch it. And I have never been a morning person, but sneaking downstairs and watching Batman all by myself in the morning was such a treat
This will forever be the greatest cartoon ever made. Most of the best times of my youth was spent watching this. I’m 37 now and still watch these to this day.
Besides the batman aspect, the universe as a whole, the atmosphere, metropolitan noir, characters, voice actors, music, were all interesting. Nothing like it ever since. Credit for Tim burton for them to have drawn influence from
It’s the best Batman animated series period I grew up with it , it was dark and at times I wonder how they got away with but looking back at this gem Kevin Conroy was the best batman all the batman villains were amazing from Mark Hamill running with the Joker and Ron Perlman as Clayface, the sad origin of Mr Freeze your not to feel sorry for the villains but this show made you and having Adam West voice the gray ghost and helping Kevin Conroy Batman was such a passing the torch
I can remember attending Chicago Comic-con in '92. Somehow I herd about or got a invite to a special showing of "On Leather Wings" the day I attended. I, and pretty much all in attendance, were blown away by it then. BTAS is always gonna be a favorite of mine.
Growing up the 90s was the greatest time to grow up; thanks to creative artists and producers such as Bruce Timm and Paul Dini. I turned 32 this year and I still watch all these classic animated series until this day. Cartoons will never be the same again. Such an epic era.
I remember buying COMICS SCENE MAGAZINE back in the day when they ran a story about the upcoming series. I was so excited for weeks and then when the show finally debuted it did not disappoint. Such an incredible time for the character and for the power of what animation could achieve.
Awesome documentary on an all time classic show. Grew up on it, now I know why I responded to it so well as a kid. This show was made by people who loved what they did, took pride in their work and respected their audience. Even as a kid I knew this was a sophisticated show with a unique style and voice. A million thanks to this awesome crew for this masterpiece. What a gem.
This show was so real that i, to this day, believe in batman.... The idea of loss, his morality and storyline arose different emotions within me... This animated series converted me into an animation movie fan, a batman fan
I'm an early 90's baby, THIS show is what got me into Batman, my first exposure to the character. and it will forever hold a special place place in my heart. I fuc**n love Batman.
Seriously, that might be one of the best Docs I’ve ever seen. So many emotional points and how it all came together. It is giving me such an inspiration to carve my own niche, and walk my own path. Absolutely amazing! 👏👏👏👏
This is the Series that made Batman my favourite! Full of heart, incredible story and Just pure Batman comicbook lore! I watched this as a kid and i'll watch it with my kids some day! Thank you to everyone who made this Series! You made millions of people believe in a man seeking out justice
I can't believe I still remember watching the first episode when it aired in 1992... I was 7 years old and l barely remember what my favorite cereal was around that time!! Lol. This show was a major part of my childhood and few episodes really stuck with me in a way where I actually questioned Is this even appropriate for children? The Mr. Freeze episode was really dark.
This was a great documentary of Batman: The Animated Series. I wonder if they will do documentaries of the other DCAU shows, like Superman: The Animated Series, Batman Beyond, Justice League, and the others. I would like them to because those were great shows just like Batman: The Animated Series. But I am afraid they might not because I believe the same creators just took the same groundbreaking formula that made Batman: The Animated Series great and put it in the other DCAU shows.
Two face & Mr Freeze origins depicted in Batman- TAS is some of the best storytelling ever put on television. Batman Mask Of The Phantasm is also a piece of cinematic history as far as I’m concerned.
Nice jams at the end, have to say. Thanks for this blast from the past. It was definitely my favorite cartoon growing up besides X-Men and Gargoyles. Plus my guilty pleasure was Mad Max as well. Either way Batman the animated series was a true masterpiece. Can still remember the feeling when the music came on with Batman jumping through obstacles to save the day. The music just carried it from there and that undescribable feeling comes out of the woodwork followed by the thought that this is not your typical cartoon (especially for those days, if ever, really). You have no idea how excited I was when I first heard a movie of the animated series was coming out.
I remember watching the prime time premiere of On Leather Wings. I was twenty-two years old, and a fan of the Burton Batman. This show blew me away from the start! Revolutionary animation in my book. So unexpected at the time. I became an immediate fan!
My childhood dream of becoming a Warner Bros animator came true back in the 90's. But instead of being part of the televsion animation crew i was recruited by Warner Digital Studios. Their short lived ILM like vfx division. we worked on several notable feature films including Mars Attacks, Eraser, Batman And Robin etc. It was wonderful years, although i would say we clearly didnt have as much fun as the Cartoon animation division.
I had seen the 1966 series and the 1989 movie before this animated series was released, and Kevin Conroy is still my favorite Batman to this day. The hours spent with this version was able to explore the darkness and compassion within the character.
I remember how, at age 12, I seriously went out of my way to change my weekly schedule in order to make sure I caught every episode in prime time. Such a game-changing series on multiple levels.

I wish the new Batman and DC films would take a lesson from these guys.
They will Paul Dini Batman stories are fantastic they need to follow those not Frank Miller take.
Couldn’t agree more
people up top on DC film changes like clothes. how can they get a singular vision like this?
Mybe thats what the Robert Pattinson will be fingers crossed
EXACTLY
The cartoon that made cartoons not embarrassing for adults too admit that they love cartoons.

Really? So sorry.
Right on !
Spongebob came later.
Brad Roblling Why are you sorry
I would’ve loved to hear the voice clips of Tim Curry’s Joker voice in this documentary. What’s it gonna take to get WB to release those voice clips from their vault?
YOUR SUBSCRIPTION TO HBO MAX!
I thought there were a couple of Joker episodes where Tim Curry *did* voice Joker?
@@davidw.2791 Nope, none. All Mark Hamill!
@@straak I loved Fox Kids as a kid. Thank you!
All impressive feats
I'm 32 and two years ago I saw the first 3 seasons on DVD and I grabbed them and I can say that it is even better now. The music, the simple and effective animation and incredible story telling. I really feel emotional connection with some of the bad guys, especially Mr. Freeze and I loved it when they talked about the writing of his backstory. It's so cool to see how this series did Mr. Freeze WAY better than anyone else. He's poetic, tragic and just badass. Drunken rant over.
One of the most memorable cartoons of my childhood, still holds up today!
Agreed. That show opening still gives me chills and excitement to this day. Honestly, when his eyes squint during that closeup!
And I have never been a morning person, but sneaking downstairs and watching Batman all by myself in the morning was such a treat
frickin awesome synthwave music in the background, one of the best documentaries I have seen in a while now..
Oh yeah!
My all time favorite show from my childhood, as well as one of my favorite shows of all time.
Credit for Tim burton for them to have drawn influence from
01:10:42 - actually, Mark Hammill HAD previously done some voice-acting in the movie Wizards.
Best animated drama series ever, at least at the time.
Clayface was sad 2
Just awesome
No. It’s the best Batman series. Period
Ron Perlman did Clayface?! That's awesome
R.I.P Kevin Conroy. He along with Frank Miller, Burton, Hamil, made Batman popular for kids born in the 80s,90s.
The animated series was the best thing ever. Great art, stories , voice direction.
When I was a kid my mom watched a couple episodes with me and said something like “I would watch this in primetime.”
This is the greatest Batman adaptation ever. So complex.
This is the Series that made Batman my favourite!
Full of heart, incredible story and Just pure Batman comicbook lore!
I watched this as a kid and i'll watch it with my kids some day! Thank you to everyone who made this Series! You made millions of people believe in a man seeking out justice
The animated series was my childhood cartoon. When I picture Batman and joker this is what I think of.
This show holds so many great memories for me. Back when I was young with no cares in the world. RIP KC you are missed
My childhood. What a time to be alive
This is probably one of the best animated series I have ever seen produced by any studio.
When people care about what they do it shows this show was a masterpiece
I'm glad they spent a decent amount of time on the music. Shirley Walker's Batman theme is the best Batman theme. It will never be topped.
Tombrunnerh9 the loud/lame music made this unwatchable........sad someone has no brains how to make background music in the background!
All these DCAU shows captured the essence of these dc heroes that no others versions have been able to do
They do. They have them for the superman and for Batman beyond. Look it up on UA-cam. It’s there I remember I’ve seen it not too long ago
That would be a fantastic idea. Batman beyond was great to and then after that cartoons just weren't made well
@@meggrotte4760 agreed like the magic just disappeared
Thank you all for creating this work of art and leaving the most indelible of marks on the childhoods of millions.
Heart of Ice episode is better than any of the films imo they had definitive depictions of these characters in 20 mins!!
Two face & Mr Freeze origins depicted in Batman- TAS is some of the best storytelling ever put on television. Batman Mask Of The Phantasm is also a piece of cinematic history as far as I’m concerned.
@@bfettrulez6734 100%
No other Mr. Freeze origin has come close to topping that. Kind of sad.
Villiam Hofgaard would love a live action of MOTP or Under the red hood
I was like 12 lol. I remember it debut at night and Fox kids then played it at 5pm EST on Friday. Then it was everyday after Tiny Toons.
I was 10
RIP Kevin Conroy 💔🕊️
Still watch this show. It's a grand work of art.
what no one is giving credit for also is this doc lol. the music and the editing is top notch. what a gift
That’s still cool
Now I’m in my 40s and still can’t get enough of Batman the animated series, Superman, Batman beyond or anything that was created by Bruce Timm.
This show is the goat of cartoons
That show was a work of art. It's crazy that DC and WB haven't brought back this same style for a more grown-up audience. It would be a huge hit.
Bruce Tim Paul Dini universe is the best
I had seen the 1966 series and the 1989 movie before this animated series was released, and Kevin Conroy is still my favorite Batman to this day. The hours spent with this version was able to explore the darkness and compassion within the character.
I remember how, at age 12, I seriously went out of my way to change my weekly schedule in order to make sure I caught every episode in prime time. Such a game-changing series on multiple levels.
What a great documentary. As a fan of the series, I want to thank everyone who worked so hard to make Batman the Animated Series so special.
This series has been such an integral part of my childhood
This series was a classic! Now I’m in my 30’s and still as big as a fan as I was back then! Bought all the seasons and watch them on my free time, the episodes are timeless
