I strongly recommend putting washers on both sides of the spring instead of just one side, and using stainless steel or aluminum washers rather than galvanized since they're exposed to weather.
And add a nylon washer between the stainless washer and the strut on both sides
Ended up trying this but felt like it made me have to put in significantly more effort to close the trunk, but i suppose i should’ve expected that, will try with just one washer and see the difference
@@BaysideTub217 Yeah, you really do have to slam it home. In case you didn't see my reply elsewhere in the thread, go to Home Depot and buy item 595075. It's a 3 pack of nylon washers in 5/16 in. A single pack will work if you only want to put washers on the bottom. I chose to put them top and bottom. I had trouble finding washers in Al or 316 SS without buying a box from McMaster, so I went this way instead.
I don't have the trunk opening all the way yet. I need to replace the struts and see how that goes. If it fails, I might need to jump up to a stiffer spring. It's a low priority nice-to-have mod with lots of other stuff going on.
Congratulation dude!! Well deserved. Thanks for all the videos.
Congrats for the 10k man .. You DESERVE alot more that man .. Keep up that great work
Evan, congrats on the 10 000 subs👍 I really did not know that the E46 is still so popular!
u share most mods for e46,cant wait to see more and congrats on 10K man1
Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
congratulations keep it up☝️ bro 💪
Love the content, about to do some of these myself. Congrats bro
Thanks man
Nice drone shots! Like the radio install video too.
Thanks
Well done mate
I am definitely doing this mod for the wagon!!
Most underrated channel on youtube
Thank you!
i own a 318 Ci e46 for sure and love your videos dude .. this car is just amazing so affordable and so sexy i love it .. but 330 is for sure better never mind
What year is your 318ci?
Evan can you please send the metric sizes of the springs and washer please
Hey man I’m trying to get my obd2 Bluetooth scanner to hook up with my head unit the only failure it has is it says it’s not connecting to the ecu. Any tips please I wanna figure this out
Even,
As Gerald Arturo and others have said in their comments, this mod is flawed, yes you caught the issue with the spring digging into the plastic rod end, but the bigger issue is that the spring consumes all the space between the shock and the rod end. When the trunk is fully closed that causes excessive pressure on the hinge mechanism, this is evident by the rise of the rear trunk gap as it meets the roof line. Continued use in this state will cause catastrophic failure of the mechanism.
Great video. Could you please tell me the lenght of the springs you used?
Can you tell me the length of this springs please? Maybe you mentioned on this video, but Im not good at listening so maybe I missed.
And have you ever seen somebody who install this to E90? Hopely it works to my E90
Hey, I recently discovered you because I'm searching for a e46 and I'm looking for videos telling me how is it like living with one. Good luck!
And? Success?
I just got some 186lb springs will they be ok of does it not matter?
I did this today with the medium strength diy spring and new struts, unfortunately for some reason my boot doesn’t open like yours on the video, mine only opens about 7 inches and fully open ?
I've tried this on my e90 2007 the trunk wouldn't close ...I used all the exact equipment....does this only work on e46...
What saiz is the die spring and the washer in milimeter?
Does this work with coils of an tesla? I see they are very strong compared to the one you got on the vídeo
Watch out for the open cables on the trunk
Yes I know I need to replace the harness
Evan,
This seemed like a perfect modification for my 2003 E46 330xi...until I tried it. It didn't work. I ordered the exact parts you specified, and new trunk struts. I even bought the washers you used in the update. When I tried to close my trunk, the springs were fully compressed when my trunk lid still had a good two inches of travel left before the latch would engage. There was no way I could close the trunk lid, even if I had been stupid enough to try to force it closed... which I did not. Is the trunk on a coupe substantially different than on the sedan?
Did you order from the link in description?
@@EvanGoyuk hi evan... i live in england and have the 330ci cabroliet.
I want ro try this mod but where do i buy the springs from please??
Iv asked in you're first mod vid but did'nt get a reply.... please advise a website where i can buy these washers and springs.... PLEASE!
A brand new pair of struts might help. My old ones were not strong enough either.
@@doesntreallymatter9368 it’s in the description
Great idea!! unfortunately I tried this on a 2006 330Ci Conv. and it didn't work. Make sure how much room you have between to mount and the strut piston when compressed. for me it was about a 1/4 in so not enough room for the spring. looking for a shorter piston strut to make this work.
Did you ever find a solution? I am looking to do the same ALSO on a 2006 330ci Convertible/
any luck with a different solution?
Can you post the sizes in Milimeters for the springs and washers?
Search for "ST50980" (Outer diameter: 15.88, Hole diameter: 8,74). The smallest free length of this spring type is 25.4 mm and should match the 1" spring he's using.
who can i bay this??
Can you please sort that boot wiring harness. Accident waiting to happen. The cables outer cover will rub against each other and WILL eventually short circuit shit. True story, this happened to me.
Yes I need to find the part number and order ASAP.
Does anyone know size of springs for coupe e46?
Does this put any extra wear/stress on the strut itself? Wanna do this but kinda worried I'll be going thru struts left n right lol
I’m still on the same struts
@@EvanGoyuk damn, that's pretty good then lol BTW, u wouldnt happen to know which springs I'd need to get if I wanted to do this on an e92 would u? 😁
@@ChrisChaos209 are you mad poppin trunk open all the time? xD
@@e36fanatics lol honestly bro I do.. I get groceries about at least once a week, plus I keep my car duster n all my car cleaning stuff like waterless wash n wax/microfiber towels in the trunk too.. plus I've been running an e50 blend for a while now so I constantly have the gas jugs in n out of the trunk...
@@ChrisChaos209 in his first video on installing these springs he did mention he got new struts so that could be why he's still on the same ones but i'm sure it wouldn't be bad.
Hey Evan, does this work on bmw e46 touring too?
It probably does but will require different springs!
@@EvanGoyuk you mean different length? And diameter of strut?
How did you insert the blue springs in trunk springs ?? On my E90, can't figure out how to insert them lol the bottom part won't come out
he has another video showing how to but you’ll have to use pliers to hold the strut in place (put a cloth in between pliers and strut to not mar it) and use an adjustable wrench to wrench the little knuckle on the end of the strut off like any other nut
Do you have to put (extra) pressure to close the trunk?
A little bit more but not much
See my recent comment. I did this installation exactly per Evan's instructions on my 2003 E46 330xi. I could not close the trunk lid at all. The blue springs were fully compressed when my trunk lid was a full two inches from the latch point. In short, the installation failed completely.
@@geraldarcuri9307 you can try and cut the springs a bit. It might work
@@geraldarcuri9307 I have had the exact same result with my 2004 m3 e46. won't close. So ... where he said it would work for every e46 submodel .... bottom line is it won't. But i'm not sure why it won't. His trunk mechanism looks exactly the same as mine. I'll look on the parts website and see if the same struts are used.
I have a 2005 330ci and it would not work for me. I used exactly the same Springs and washers and the white lithium grease. I can get the trunk to close but when I go to open it and just pops open a few inches and not all the way like in his video. Are you using genuine BMW struts or are you using a different manufacturer?
You would need a brand new pair of struts. My old ones were not strong enough either. They got weaker over time.
I have 320d saloon, I have changed 2 pairs of brand new struts, and changed 2 pairs of springs, blue, and green, now I am awaiting BROWN for heavy duty lifting...still, trunk door is only pop-up, I dont know whats the catch
Genuine BMW struts are just rebranded Stabilus struts as sold on FCP Euro. If you examine the original BMW struts on the car, you'll see the Stabilus logo next to the BMW roundel.
Anyone managed to find these springs in the UK?
still working?
It opens way too fast for me, so I’m going to buy a lighter duty, 156lbs deflection is too much
Armen Abidian which brand of lift support did you use? I bought the stabalus lift and used the same spring but my trunk only opened halfway. I also used white lithium grease.
Where do I get these bastard springs in the UK?
Did you find any? I am also looking
Hey Evan, great videos, it helps me with my e46 for great tips, without the search. You mentioned about doing the mod for the oil consumption with the catch can, have you seen this mod? ua-cam.com/video/Fo2rLSzNzt0/v-deo.html anyways, congratulations on the 10,000 subs. keep the hard work.
