I did this to my 2001 330d back in 2016 and it worked great....for 3 days. The springs were the same, but there is something very important that me and the guy in the video forgot about. There has to be a washer between the bottom part of the spring and the strut, becouse the spring will notch its self in to the plastic bit. Trust me. ;)

Great idea!! unfortunately I tried this on a 2006 330Ci Conv. and it didn't work. Make sure how much room you have between to mount and the strut piston when compressed. for me it was about a 1/4 in so not enough room for the spring. looking for a shorter piston strut to make this work.
Same issue with my 2000 323ci convertible. Trunk won't close with washer/spring as shown. I will close only if I take the washer off... but then the spring jams down onto the nipple connector. Then not enough spring action to pop the trunk lid open.. Any suggestions appreciated! :)

I did it on a e90 ‘06 and it didn’t work. It was very hard to Close the trunk. And when i press the Button it opend only for 5cm. Maybe i have bad shocks?
Love this mod, but you need a smaller spring for the e46 convertible (a 2005 325Ci in my case). The ones in the link provided are too thick when compressed to allow the trunk to close. Gonna order a couple different sizes and will report back!
I also have an 2005 325ci convertible, I found the same measurements but thinner (Homebasee) and it closes all the way but doesn't open more then without the springs. Just saw were they said to add washers on both sides of the spring so I'm gonna try that. Lol e how everyone on here is so excited and gonna update when they do this but no one has. Either people are forgetful or they never do the mod.

Do attempt this on a 2005 330ci Convetible. You will break both your shock bases and deform both shock mount attachment points. I ordered from this link, and just attempted to install, the trunk would not close because the springs take up too much space even when fully compressed and damage will result at the attachment screwed on base as well as the trunk's metal attachment blades. You have been warned.
Installed the blue springs on my 2003 540i M Sport. When the trunk opens now, it comes up about an inch, but that's all. Does that possibly mean my struts are going bad, or the cheap springs I bought might not actually be rated at 156lbs? You have a very good idea. Thank-you.
great video, i have an issue at random intervals ill get the taillight error light on my dash but my taillights are working completely fine, oem lights and the bulbs are still good, it comes on for a couple seconds maybe a minute then goes and usually after it has rained.
I had the same if the wires had been touched a bit, the contacts turned green. After cleaning it the problem was gone. Later I had the same but one bulb was loose but still working and that caused the problem.

Great video and trick. However I was unable to find such springs from Europe. I did find 5/8" Hole diam, 3,5/8" Rod diam, 1 3/8" Free length compression springs. Do you think those will work if I shave the item to 1" length?
I was hunting around for 316 stainless washers to complete this job because rust sucks, but I was going to have to order a box of 50 for $$. Rather than doing that, I poked around my local Home Depot and found nylon washers instead. You want SKU 595075, 5/16 in. You need two 3 packs in order to get 4 washers. They fit both the rod and the strut diameter perfectly. Right now, my trunk jumps up about 2 inches but doesn't open completely. I'll replace my struts next. If that doesn't do the job, I'll upgrade from blue springs to the next higher spring rate, red. Hopefully I don't have to go further to green which has an even higher spring rate. I'll report back once I have more info.
do you know why the e46 makes that noise when unlocking the trunk? my car does this too but i dont know any car besides the e46 bmw that makes this sound. not even my parents, jeep, tahoe, 435, or equinox make this sound.
I bought the springs. And as someone else has said in the comments it didn't work for me. I have an e46 m3. With the blue springs on there is zero room for them. So when they are fully compressed the boot will not close. Take them off and slowly close the boot and you will realize there is no room for them. Unfortunate cause this would have been a lovely touch. I'm sure it should have worked as we have the same assembly (or at least it looks the same)

I tried but my boot wouldn't close lol. Under closer inspection I noticed there was only about a centermetre gap clearence when boot was nearly closed where the spring & washer was suppost to fit 🤦♂️

I'm having the wiring on mine fixed today...My mechanic won't be cutting the grommet though...Take out about 30cm of bad wiring and replace each one...👍

Check your wiring harnesses these usually break and go bad

It’s a little more difficult to close but you will get use to it. Time will tell if the springs will get weaker.

Just had it in my e39, by any rubber isolation for electric wiring, and envelope the wires from body to trunk
