Music video by The Human League performing Open Your Heart. (C) 2003 Virgin Records Ltd
I’m now 55 & I can remember being 14 so clearly . If only I could back to the church disco one more time ❤
I was 20 when this came out at college in Manchester at that time, guess we'd all love to go back, great music wasn't it.
One of the The League's most underrated songs. Timeless classic, in my opinion 💯
The bridge is not as great as the main theme (it sounds a liitle mccartnish pipe of peace) but the body of the song is great.
A most memorable one amongst all their others.
Absolute classic 👌
Amazing they create atmosphere!!!
100% agree
Phil's voice and lyrics are phenomenal. They've also stood the test of time.
Phil Oakey - a man ahead of his time.
Possibly a good Chess player 2. Like I am. The Human League r Ace.
Even his ear rings were ahead of their time
"Your worst is better than their best." Love that line.
I quote this line quite a lot lol
Despite how bad their videos got, they'll still be made of better music than the crap put out nowadays!
An epic line..deep in philosophy...
Quality line...kinda of a paradox...sums up some relationships you have with people in life
@@gavvvyHot Just what I was thinking
Joanne and Susan probably the coolest dancers of the 80s .
One of those songs that when you hear it, it still sends a thrill through you like you've never heard it before.
One of the finest albums I own. 41 years on, and still a synth pop masterpiece..🎤🎹💎🕺💙
Definitely in my top 10 Albums of all time.
As good as any British album of the past 50 years 👍
There were great songs from my teenage years but this is still the one that heals and gives hope after 50 years of life's broken dreams and betrayal.
Much love to you. Remember that life is a way and love is above all that humans make up. Life will match you up with similar feeling people, so go back to love and forgiveness
Awesomely expressed friend. We were there. And we would not swap it for anything
Brilliant group. I remember them in 1981. As a fourteen year old boy at the time, I thought Joanne Catherall was gorgeous. She still is !
80's best days of my life, oh to be a teenager again 😩
Hi Claire.
I agree with you on that.
The 80's was an amazing decade of great music.
All sung by great Male, Female, Groups, & Duo's.
How I wish it was the 80's now.
So like to be back there now & reminice the great songs again.
Couldn't agree with you more there!
Always loved the 80s, and always will. Definitely best years of my life too. Such great music back then!!! :)
I agree with you. Que bom ter sido adolescente nesta época . um abraço pra quem curte synthipop .
Kid, Belém pará , amazônia . Brazil.
Didn't realize it at the time, was having to much fun. would give anything to relive those years again and have my mum back. Certainly make sure she knew how much I loved her and how much I miss her. Great times with great people. Getting old sucks.
Your so right, wish I could rewind the clock.
Dare is still one of my all time favourite albums.
Mine as well. Got it at a charity shop for £1 and gave it to my husband as a birthday present 🎁
50 and I still listen to it.
And mine
This song has a great messsge.
I'd say it's one of the top 5 80s synthpop albums, arguably even top 3.
As much as I love the Martin ware/Craig marsh era of human league, one cannot deny that almost all of Dare, mirror man and fascination are pop perfection
RED D fascination was 83
Love the league🥰me and my friends danced just like Susanne and Joanne, we were soooo jealous that they were picked from a dancefloor in a nightclub in Sheffield, and they're still going well! Ya cant beat the 80s!!!!°💕💕💕
Roxy nightclub.
One of the best albums made, true testimony is how good the band are even nearly 40 years later an£ the songs are still classics
I love this song and the album "Dare!". Possibly my favourite album of all time... I'm a musician and the League are in the the top three bands that really got me into music as a kid. My love for the band will never waver!
One of THE most perfect Pop Songs ever made. It's a beautiful wall of complete MAGIC
Fabulous song. It's dreamlike.
Definitely.
I was sat waiting for my mammogram today and was my 6th year clear after breast cancer. And this was on the radio in the background and I'd never heard it before. It's not my cup of tea at all and myself and my husband were laughing because it was slightly muffled in the background and it sounded more like they were singing open your arse and shaking your arse. I've never been a Human League fan anyway but at least it made me laugh while sat waiting for test. Every time I go for the check up I am terrified they will tell me I have cancer again. Now I'll just remember this song every time I go and it will make me smile to myself 🤣
My very best wishes to you :)
Wow I wasted 5 seconds reading some of this drivel
An all time classic!
Dare, one of my favourite albums of all time.
My god i loved the 80s...and old enough to remember the good times we had,the music, the whole era was beautiful, bittersweet at times, but we lived and loved it ❤
Phil Oakey never sounded better than he did on this track. Absolutely made for his voice.
Doesn't get much more 80s than this guys! Love it! The way that little note rises up is great!
81-82 they were really as good as it gets ,every song an absolute classic ....great vocalist and a great image
One of the greatest bands of a super era for music...a cut above the rest.
Miles ahead of their time. Best band of the 80s by far
And far better than anything that Simon Carol can come out with. The Human League r so underated. I've got every Human League albums and most of them are signed. I've also got a signed photo of my favourite Human League sweet ❤️ 4 ever coming in2 my love life,4 ever making a dream come true 4 me 2 meet up with them. And 4 the best night ever of my life ie Queen Joanne Catherall ❤️. She has also sent me a ace signed photo of her. Which I've had 4 36 years. And I will gladly keep it 4 ever.
The aural and visual blend for the first 45 seconds on this track/video is nothing short of staggering....and I was no synth pop fan at that time as a young lad or now.
THE most dramatic! Dear lord, they had fun with their new Linn Drum. And put to such great effect. (and a Bajoran earring to boot... 😊)
What an incredible sounding, uplifting song from one the the best albums of all time.
I love The Human League. This is a beautiful song, and I love Phil Oakeys look in the 80s.💖
The Things Dreams Are Made Of always my favourite especially when Rik was dancing to it in an episode of “The Young Ones”
Still fantastic, HL has one of the most engaging sounds of the 80's 🎶
I know m8. I have got a lot to thank Queen Joanne Catherall ♥️ epy 4. And my hero 4 ever IE Queen Joanne Catherall ♥️ is partly responsible 4 the best night of my life so far. If not ever. I will always love the Human League. And Queen Joanne Catherall Sweet ♥️ U epy 4 everything that u Queen Joanne Catherall Sweet ♥️ have done 4me.
everytime they play a Human League record on any radio station it's always " don't you want me?" Good record but this by far their best record...to me any way
Yes, just like when they play a song by Eurythmics is always Sweet dreams as if they didnt have any other songs!
Agreed. The start of this is just superb.
I have always hated don't you want me.
Just like in England when you hear a Bob Marley song on the radio its usually One Love, Three Little Birds or No Woman No Cry - And those weren't even his best tunes by a country mile.
Don't You Want Me got me into them, but it's just been so overplayed over the years. This though by far is my favourite
Probably my favourite league song-takes me right back to my early schooldays. Wish I could return-2020-22 a load of crap. Hoping for a better 2023 for us all folks!
loved Dare as a 13 year old, Christmas 81 with Don't You Want Me number one, a mention at The Young Ones party, and still regularly listen to the album on the treadmill 40 years later.
I mean what!!! The melody here is just as visceral as my childhood chimes.
When your top Xmas pressie was the DARE album
:)) Me too - with Duran Duran - Duran Duran + DM - CTA = my best Xmas ever :))
For me it was my first album that I did buy. Before that radio recorded to c-casette. Still own it! And still super good lp!
A hit in May '81 I think
@Jake Haynes Dare was one of the first albums I ever bought, I was 16 in 1981. 70's/early 80's were a wonderful time for music.
Yvonne...for me it was saving your paper round money to buy the album you wanted by the band you loved rather than getting David Essex from your aunt 😉
Just been to see them yesterday at the Royal botanical gardens ✌
Quite an Irish sounding chorus .
Great track. 🤩
The best human league song love it. they have loads of classics but this is the best
Agreed
and it had Joanne.....oh aye
He’s killing it with the hair and makeup!
Far far far better than anything the talentless songwriters of today can ever dream of coming up with.
Not looking enough mate
How are those rose tinted nostalgia goggles working for you, eh?
NebulaDreams he speaks the truth,
Lee71England deffo agree
who would win in a fight dude a wasp or a bee?
Less than 1 million views for this absolute classic.
1981 ! My all time favourite year for music in my life 😊
This was my guilty pleasure post punk, still have hundreds of 70s and 80s vinyl and I treasure every one
Still listening to and loving this in 2023. Classic
Me to, takes me back to 14 and all these years later still love it the same ❤
One of many great songs from the album Dare. It was a brilliant album.
It was the soundtrack of the early 80s for me..... memories
I've got the Human Leagues Romantic,Dare, Hysteria,Trevealouge Reproduction and some of The Human League's singles signed. + A signed photo of my favourite Human League sweet ❤️ 4 ever. IE Queen Joanne Catherall ❤️. Which I've had 37 years now.
A anthem 'that has a stood the test of time from when I heard this in 1982' Such a hit on the Wellington Dance Hall Scene Ie Clares' .....anyone of the Epoch??. Beautiful lyrics
It's unusual for a pop song to have the first chorus played by just the keyboard, then into verse two. Genius and brave idea on this one, but it worked wonders.
Dont cry bud.... memories are good...xxx
Brett Anderson surely took inspiration from Oakey’s look here for early Suede.
Probably their most under rated song - brilliant
I remember buying this like it was yesterday.... 😢 Still sounds brilliant! ❤
Brilliant song and Lyrics. One of the best front men in a band ever. Great stuff. Easily the beat band of the 80s
You are so right m8. I am a mega big Human League fan. Who I've seen play live 18 times in total now. I've got a signed photo of Joanne Catherall ♥️ my favourite Human League member. And my hero 4 ever making a dream of mine 2 come true. 4 me 2 meet up with the Human League. And m8 I even think that Joanne Catherall ♥️ has got some magic powers inside her ♥️ 2 wards me. And she doesn't know it. But Joanne Catherall ♥️ is partly responsible 4 the best night of my life so far. Even if the unexpected free taxi home from Brighton 2 Portsmouth where I live in and play Chess 4 on the night in question wasn't planned. And m8 it cost Southern railway company over £100 4 the taxi from Brighton 2 Portsmouth where I live in and play Chess 4 on the night in question. And all because I had missed the last train home and 4 got 2 bring my meds with me. And that's a true story.
Human League is fantastic!!!
Phil was (and still is my hero), I wore my curly hair like him in those days.
"But there's no future ,,,without tears,,,",,,,,,how depressingly correct....
Man I loved growing up in the 80s
Just can't believe it where did the 80s go
Greatest Decade ever,,,
DITTO
My 1st ever gig that I had gone 2c. Was in 1084 at Crawley West Sussex. The same year. Queen Joanne Catherall ❤️ my hero. Sent me a ace signed photo of her. And I will gladly keep it 4 ever
My 1st ever gig that I've seen. Was The Human League at Crawley West Sussex in 1984. The same year. Queen Joanne Catherall ❤️ so kindly sent me a ace signed photo of her. Which I've still got. And I will gladly keep it 4 ever. Queein Joanne Catherall ❤️ is also largely responsible 4 the best night ever of my life.
Love the sound of that synth emulator
Casio VL Tone 1
Emulators were very rare back then - i think they came out 2 years after this release.
Caned this album when my brother bought on release, I was 10, mind blown.
Great pop song from the 1980's by a wonderful British band of that era.
Great band live. Small venues so you get the sound....perfect I'm 49 yrs...saw them live when I was 34 ha ha. Just made me feel good that I had taste in music from age 11
Absolute masterpiece.
Saw these a couple of years back in Manchester .... still as good as they were in the 80's.
that keychange man
Pure Joy! We need this now more than ever. I always relish the '80s sound. Remember hearing this song in my local HMV in 1993, years after its original release and it stuck with me, even then, that this is a true timeless classic!
And when it hurts you know
They love to tell you
How they warned you
They say "Don't be surprised
At someone's lies"
They think they taunt you
But if you can stand the test
You know your worst is better
Than their best
And so you stand here
With the years ahead
Potentially calling
With open heart
Or with a spirit dead
You walk on
Love is the reason
Faith or treason
Playing a part
End concealing
Try revealing
Open your heart
Dare to feel
Take the chance
Make the deal
Being an island
Shying from trying
Seems the easy way
Such an easy way
But there's no future
Without tears
Love is the reason
Faith or treason
Playing a part
End concealing
Try revealing
Open your heart
But if you can stand the test
You know your worst is better than their best
Love is the reason
Faith or treason
Playing a part
End concealing
Try revealing
Open your heart
Love this song so much...so many memories....I wish they would re-release it 🥰
Got the album back in 81 , class
Best song on the album. Easy.
One of their most underrated songs but a fav of mine.
Love Phil Oakey's melody lines - this and Mirror Man are so unexpected.
A hit in the UK singles charts in Spring '81 I think it was.
And the great songs kept coming and it would never end....hmm.
Great … miss you 80’s
True innovators style and music ...loved them from the late 70s but they are the band that started the 80s
This was my sign off track when I worked at Radio Wexham Channel 3.
Acquistato il vinile nel 1982 appena uscì !!!💯💯💯💯💯💟💟💟💟👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Lights out…your Lady in your arms and time to zzzzz….epic song and album….hell of a haircut even in those days I always thought….😎
They say don't be surprised at someones lies , The Lyrics are so stunning
what can we say but fantastic tune still listen to it to this day
This reminds me of being 2 or 3 years old in the late 80s 👌
I love this song, the lyrics are inspiring and encouraging. Heard it in the early eighties and its still stirs my soul in 2019. No future without tears, but you can stand the test, So Dare, I dare you😉
Reminds me of my little sis as well, happy Times.
Dare. It was the 2nd album i ever bought. ❤
The incomparable The Human League 💖
Beautifully bittersweet detune feels like pure 80s nostalgia. I keep coming back to this flexible classic.
Flexible classic , hmm good description ,i like that
Should definitely of been a number 1 hit single 4 the Human League. Still amazing lyrics in 24
2024 hope all you over fifties are still listening to the best era for music
Heart 80s every day
you bet. absolutely.
Heart 80s and absolute 80s only station for me long live the 80s
The music production on this track always amazed me at the time one of the best imo
Heard this live at Stafford Bingley Hall, December 1981. Awesome!!!
What a a amazing track. Beautiful and haunting.
The Words in this Song would Help Young People Today with their Struggles!! New 2024 & way Beyond remixed Versions is Necessary!! Not taking away from this Beautiful original Which was in 1981 way ahead of its Era especially in Production!! No MIDI. Or Modern Technology of Today !! Took a lot of Manpower & Cables & Creative Craft to Produce this Masterpiece!! 😮. A lot of work behind the scenes!! Tin Whistle keyboard Part was Revolutionary!! ❤️
Wonderful tune from a fantastic era in time....
Still one me all time favourites from the League 💙
Il n'y a pas de future sans larmes.🎹 Do you remenber..🌹✨💞🙏🌌.
I love the style of this video,timeless...
This song is keyboard blueprint for all bands that came after it. It's not necessarily my favourite Human League song but it bridged the crossover from 'niche' to 'mainstream'. What a shock to the system it was when they burst onto the scene with Dare but I'd recommend seeking out songs like Empire State Human and Sound of the Crowd if you haven't heard them.
great song great group I love the human league
The most 80's video ever.
I often wonder what the big-hitters at that time, in 1981, were thinking if they had happened to catch this video-song back then. The cool big-hitters such as Elton John, David Bowie, Blondie, Queen, even Björn and Benny of Abba. I'm pretty sure if the aforementioned had sat down to watch Top Of The Pops or whatever weekly music show was on and this was played, they would have been utterly absorbed by it, fascinated by it, both by the look and by the sound. This song called Open Your Heart would be fascinating to hear again by another artist, using different production methods. To me it has an operatic feel to it; or with a little adjustment, could be a grand stage musical hit song. But nothing would ever beat the raw beauty of the original. To me, it also relays the power of imagination, both the video and the song. But its fun too. It's not too strong really. You must stop to be arrested by it; but then you move on. Nothing too deep in '81, and nothing boring either.
