    I explained this same information to a customer about a year ago. He was dead set against owning any physical media such as 4K UHD BluRays. I said ok, let's do a test. He said fine. I brought Mission Impossible: Fall-Out over as a UHD 4K Disc. I suggested he start playing the ending sequence with the hellicopters. He agreed. He streamed it and was happy. Told me it sounded amazing. I said, good. Now, let's check out the disc. So, I put in my disc and played the same sequence. His mouth dropped open. He looked at me with astonishment. After this test, he has been buying everything he can get on physical media. Plus the fact that once you buy it, you OWN it. They can't just decide to discontinue the app for your player and/or remove the movie/tv show you purchased online for whatever reason. Good video. Keep up the great work! Best Wishes!

      Yes i agree to a certain degree but imagine the amount of money you have to invest in hard copy blu ray discs, then the space of storing them vs a monthly fee, plug and play. People’s circumstances are different & having physical media over streamed is becoming less likely to the majority. Even stores have stopped selling blu rays (not all) but most have empty shelves.

    It's disheartening that people don't know or care about better audio. Sound has always been that unseen factor that many a proclaimed "Cinephile" or home theater fans don't focus on when discussing and/ or recommending films for viewing and/or purchase.
    I think hardcore audiophiles either intimidate or turn off potential, casual enthusiasts with their expensive, high-end set ups. But I'll tell ya, for the same price as a decent 65"+ TV you can also get an adequate sound system as well(piecemeal). Personally, for me, sound comes first(is the audio track popping) then I worry about stuff like HDR/Dolby vision, 4k transfers and the like. Great sound is transformative. If you're doing it right, the actual air in your viewing space moves and make noise where the effect is happening on screen. Example: the scene where Spider-Man meets Electro in "No Way Home," if you close your eyes you can feel/hear the air in your room move with the various lightning strikes in the scene. People think great sound is about shaking/booming and clarity (when the volume is up) but I'll never forget when I finally found that magic calibration that made even the most mundane audio track sing.
    I'm rambling but here it is:
    DON'T FORGO PHYSICAL MEDIA FOR STREAMING(if you can afford no to).

    Great video on getting the best Atmos signal to the speakers, but that's only half the story. Many setups still have very stunted Atmos experience even with uncompressed formats because they use upfiring speakers or worse a soundbar with virtualized surround sound. Even with perfect surfaces for bouncing sound off ceilings (typically a condition to be avoided or minimize with acustic treatments) you get a very diminished effect compared to actual on/in-ceiling speaker placement. The difference is huge.

    I’ve always used actual removable media via my Panasonic UB-9000 or UB-900 connected to my Triniov Processor and 16 channel Perlisten setup. I’ve tested streams vs the actual disc and there’s clear differences in the dynamic range as well as object placement accuracy and this is using what’s at the moment the cutting edge of Atmos in home technology. Atmos from a sound bar is better than no Atmos at all, however the upward firing speakers depend greatly on the acoustical materials in the room as well as the actual in room performance of the bouncy house speakers which you can measure with a USB mic like a UMIK-1 and the free application REW. Switching from upward firing speakers to actual speakers placed according to the Dolby white paper is a night and day difference if you’re able to go to on/in ceiling speakers. I can’t do in ceilings but have had great success using on ceiling speakers.

    There isn't such thing like "true atmos". All objects, which are 118 and not 128, can successfully reproduced with DD+ & TrueHD formats. Also there isn't such thing like "studio quality" in home entertainment. Just to mention that a Dolby Atmos full uncompressed 4 minutes music file is almost 4TB. Here we are talking about 2 hours movies.
    Also, it's impossible to reproduce Atmos content at homes the way it's reproduced in studios and commercial cinemas. At these places we have 118 individual objects and in our homes we have clusters of sounds. The Dolby renderer that process the objects inside home gear cannot reproduce 118 individual sounds. For that reason studio exports for home entertainment are 7.1.4 plus 20 objects. These 20 objects are more like clusters and not individual objects. The Dolby renderer inside ProTools "collects" sounds from "same directions" and reproduce them as one cluster. For that reason 5 let's say individual objects (that means 5 individual waveforms from different placements) will become one waveform for one (perhaps two) speakers. The final result is almost the same, but not studio or Cinema quality.

  • @TheReverendSlim
    @TheReverendSlim 2 роки тому +26

    The home version of Atmos doesn't support 128 objects, only the theatrical version. The theatrical mix is converted down so that objects near each other are grouped together or pre-panned between static objects to keep the object count down to around 15. This is true for both streaming and disc, and the only difference is less precision/spatial resolution.

    • @Polyh3dron
      @Polyh3dron 2 роки тому +2

      Neither version supports 128 objects. It’s a total of 128 channels, at least 9 of them being a 7.1.2 bed in theatrical, and at least 8 of them being a 7.1 bed in the home version (maybe you can do a 5.1 bed on the home version but I’ve never tried).. either way, not all 128 of those channels are available to be objects.

    • @TheReverendSlim
      @TheReverendSlim 2 роки тому +6

      @@Polyh3dron Actually, it isn't "channels" at all with Atmos. It's objects. In the theatrical version, you still essentially have the legacy channels (meaning it uses all speakers in that zone of the array) but they are represented as the first 10 reserved objects in the interface. Those objects are zone-constrained, meaning the "side surround" object would play back from every speaker in the side surround zone. You then also have 118 steerable objects that can move between individual speakers (or if i assign the parameter, be limited to a particular zone). The "channels" would then be the number of speakers the renderer has available to output those objects irrespective of the number of objects used in the mix.
      The home version tends to max out at 15 objects for bandwidth/scaling purposes, but you are correct that 9 of them are dedicated to the defined channel positions. They aren't "channels" anymore though, as the renderer can shift them as needed based on the available speakers (so for instance, if you have 5.1.4, the object at the rear surround position in the mix outputs to the side surround channel but the object at the side surround position images between the L/R and side surrounds as if you had a speaker there). The LFE channel is carried over from the bed layer of the bitstream (and is technically the only thing strictly re-used from the bed layer) and doesn't use an available object. The DD+ version of Atmos for streaming actually does use a 5.1 bed.
      The point here being that the theatrical mix's 128 objects gets converted down for the home version such that it doesn't use more than 15 objects. You don't lose any of the object data in the process, since it is combined with other objects using grouping (and the occasional shift of objects in the defined channel positions off of their positions dynamically to hand off a sound to another adjacent object using pre-panning).

    • @vadimkrylov

      @@TheReverendSlim 128 objects it’s just in theory. Have you seen such a mix in reality? No.

    • @TheReverendSlim
      @TheReverendSlim 2 роки тому +5

      @@vadimkrylov 1. None of us have access to the theatrical mix to know.
      2. The interface for the Atmos plugin literally has 128 objects with the first 10 reserved. Not a theory. It's what's available to the sound designer.
      3. It doesn't matter for the home version of the mix because it all gets grouped down to about 15 objects anyway (or in many cases, 9 objects with pre-panning applied by the downconversion).
      4. That last thing doesn't matter in a small space because you don't need the spatial resolution you would in a larger space to get the same effect.

Truth is that majority of the general audience cannot differentiate between true lossless vs lossy, DD+ vs Atmos vs Dolby True HD unless specifically comparing both streams side by side. Soundbars with dedicated rears, upfiring speakers from mid range and above can do a great job for providing a good cinematic audio experience at home without the hassles of multi speaker setup, tuning in a limited space. Great job explaining the various aspects of ATMOS, but one major thing is missing. Considering you are presenting on UA-cam, where there are many ATMOS demo's and test tracks that people are naturally going to try to use to test their own ATMOS setups, it is important to let your followers know that UA-cam down mixes those ATMOS demo's into plain vanilla STEREO which obliterates the ATMOS information. I recall after getting my ATMOS system attempting to test using these bogus UA-cam ATMOS demos and test tracks and thinking something was wrong with my system. After doing a bit of digging I learned what I was doing wrong, using UA-cam as my test source. I eventually found some websites with ATMOS tracks, downloaded them and they play wonderfully using my computer Windows Movie and TV player app. Also note, that not all Windows video players are equal either, some can play ATMOS, some can't. Be sure to watch the display on your ATMOS receiver to see what works and what doesn't.

    There is one thing you might not have noticed. Atmos is virtually non-existent on Blu-Ray. UHD Blu-Ray, absolutely. For example, none of the Marvel Studios titles have Atmos on the BD, only on the UHD-BD. So you need a UHD Blu-Ray Player along with the discs to appreciate the best that Atmos can offer for the home. The difference is night and day between Atmos on hard media vs streaming, but it isn't as simple as it sounds. Even plex requires ripping UHD Blu-Ray which takes up roughly twice the space and streaming bandwidth on your network and in many cases poses other difficulties.

    I did try it and I don't get it - is DTS plus compress it like mp3 is compressed compered to flac or is it compressed dynamic? From my experience it is compressed dynamic and I much prefere it over trueHD - sound from this is super agressive and it stears away attention from the movie itself to a sound. It might be different story in other enviroment tho. I use plex nvidia setup with 7.1 - no atmos for now but DTSvstrueHD comparison is still same.

    The problem is.. is that this video is just theory and not reality. The reality is that most people cannot hear the difference between lossless audio and lossy audio (assuming it's not trash quality lossy audio), even with the best equipment. There may be a very small audible difference for some content that some people could notice when making a direct comparison under ideal conditions. But fact of the matter is, is that no one is watching under ideal conditions outside of test situations as as such, no one is pretty much able tell any difference. And I'm not talking about home theater testing, but actual 100K+ studios specifically meant for it.

    People will always choose convenience over quality every time. Or should I say Sheeple. They swallow all the sales pitches and think they have the next best thing. People buy huge tv's and take them home and don't give a second thought about on how to connect it for best sound and picture. They want small speakers, if any, with no cables and think that they can reproduce big cinema sound. They want to stream instead of buying the movies on discs which is still the best way to watch a film at home. Caleidoscope not counted since it is WAY over priced.

      I assume that playing the audio straight from the disc will always be superior to playing it over a digital copy. Since he mentions that the streaming and digital copy companies use compressed files to fit more on there servers. Imagine popping in a cd in your car stereo then playing that same album via bluetooth from your phone. im sure you will have to turn up the volume to reach the same sound level as the cd playing directly from the stereo.

I have a Samsung qe65q70r (2019 model) and I would like to buy a q950a soundbar. Will I have Dolby Atmos sound by Netflix content? Because from what I have read Q70r has an ark HDMI port so does not support Dolby Atmos. In that case, if I will buy an Apple tv or google Chromecast tv and connect it to the soundbar, and the soundbar to the tv will I have the same result or it will improve the Dolby Atmos experience at all. In any case, have you any other suggestions - solutions for me? thank you in advance continue the nice quality work 😉

    Comparing DD+ or TrueHD is unimportant if 80% of the releases use the 3D aspect in a few hand picket scenes over the whole movie. There are only a few very good mixes out there, the majority is bad. American Sniper, Transformers or San Adreas for example.
    And don't get me started on the problem of the German audience, where only every 4th US Dolby Atmos release gets a German atmos track. While you get D True HD we even only get DD 5.1, because there is a need to fit 15 other languages onto the disk too.

    • @absolutium
      @absolutium 2 роки тому

      TRUE HD is important due to compression not because of 3D...
      Since both are capable of two axis surround sound the main benefit comes from the lossless audio either if it has enough "surround effects" or not that is irrelevant for the comparison.

      Most streaming services use Dolby Digital Plus with Atmos MAT. It’s a lossy format. The lossless format is generally only available on an actual disc. I’ve watched John Wick 3 on both a streaming device and the actual UHD disc on a Panasonic UB-9000 A/B comparison style. There’s clear differences in not only dynamic range but overall quality in relation to the removable media.

    My little Logitech computer 5.1 surround system is great!!! I mean, really great!!! Watching on my 75" TV from my movieJukebox PC is the best way to access my store bought movie collection.
    I get the best image quality that's about as good as Blu ray too... using Handbrake I save the video as an MP4 and reduce the file size from 20 or even 30+ GB to under 10 GB.
    And this way I can get over 600 films backed up on one 4 TB HDD.

    I’m itching to get Dune at home since watching it at the cinema. I’m considering starting to buy Apple TV versions of movies vs 4K UHD discs.
    Two reasons:
    1. Impatience
    2. Continually upgrading. Apple upgrade what I buy after I buy it. Eg HD DD5.1 versions of films have become UHD HDR ATMOS versions of the movie.
    I’m using a 55 Samsung QLED (doesn’t support Dolby Vision but does HD10+) and a 7.1.4 Atmos Monitor Audio Reference system powered by Denon Atmos amp and a stereo amp for the rear Atmos speakers.
    Does the Apple route seem reasonable or do I keep buying discs (I have thousands of DVDs) and ultimately end up with an out of date 4K Disc library worth zip???

    • @TecnoTyler
      @TecnoTyler 2 роки тому

      Even on Apple TV (which is the highest quality streaming service widely available), “4K” is really closer to a 1080p Blu-Ray, because of the same compression mentioned in the video. Still, the convenience is hard to deny. Most of my movies are on Apple TV, but I’m willing to purchase my favorites on UHD Blu-Ray.

My biggest issue with the Plex player is when I'm watching something on directly from my computer to my HDR projector it won't properly do HDR. It just changes the colors to make it look right but it's not HDR. I notice when I stream with plex and I'm watching something on thing on the TV downstairs HDR works but if I play directly off my computer HDR is not working I have to use another player which is annoying. Anyone know how to get this working? I saw A Linus review on an alienware monitor and he was using plex and I'm assuming he was going straight to the monitor and not streaming and he was testing the HDR so I'm assuming it's possible just haven't been able to get it to work. This is the problem with streaming now, there is no one stop shop, as was with the old system of video DVD BLU-RAY hire, you'd go to your local video shop and hire just about anything that was available, now your expected to fork out money to so many different streaming services, what a joke it's become, just to fill their greed and control, then if it's not released on 4k, blu-ray or DVD discs, then you don't get to see it all, so effectively these streaming services are cutting their own throats, by only releasing things on their streaming service, maybe one day streaming might be a good option, but for now there is no one stop shop streaming service and the streaming quality really lacks, especially up against 4k disc content.

      Yes that's what I do, but it gets a bit expensive but luckily I've found a place that trades bluerays and 4k discs a lot cheaper

    Can you please tell me if I use a Apple tv 4k with high end soundbar and fast internet speed like 200 mbps, will I get Dolby True HD or will it be still the same?

      Unfortunately the Apple TV 4K doesn’t output TrueHD at all. You need a blu ray player or home server to play TrueHD.

      Streaming services don't use Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD Master Audio. Only dolby digital plus.

      The 2021 apple tv 4k outputs atmos if you have it selected in the menu setting.

    I buy around 1 hard copy a week. Thats my "treat" movie and the volume gets turned up. Streaming movies audio sucks comparatively, so i just use streaming to watch content. I suppose if you have a soundbar streaming atmos will be fine because it sucks anyway, but if you've invested in a theatre hard copies are the wat to go, or kaleidiscape ripoff stuff.
