Got a chance to see them with this full lineup. Two drummers, two background singers in Bozeman Montana. They fricken blew that place down, I left with my eyebrows singed and my nose hairs burnt. I've never heard such a solid show in my life. What a pleasure.
Yes sir they put on one hell of a show! Loved the double drummers! First time was back in the 80s. Things have changed a bit with the line up but I went to a concert in 2019 and they still kicked ass!
Back in 2005, I was in an ac/dc tribute band and we played a beer fest in Bozeman. The people there treated us like we were the real ac/dc and we kinda sucked, LOL. Point being, Bozeman is the place where I met some of the coolest people on the planet. The next night we played a homecoming dance at in Havre at the university. Insanely wild crowd. Like really insane. College girls taking their clothes off on the stage, cops in horses, doing shots. Montana fucking rules.
So cool to be able to say" I was there". Over 100 degrees inside the Rainbow Music Hall with all the lighting. 38 years later .38Special has a special place in my youth and heart.
I had to look up the Rainbow Music Hall.. Denver Marie??.. Is that the place.. There's a website thats dedicated to this place... What an old cool venue this was...Must of been an incredible night!!
The bass line on this song is stellar! We can all learn to play it, but Larry came up with the double stops up the neck in the pre-chorus, simply brilliant. RIP Larry.
My God What Great Memories of MTV in the very beginning... Before it became overly produced and all glamorized!!!!... These guys were a staple on MTV back then!!!!
Saw these guys right before or right after this show at the State Fair in Pueblo, CO. .38 opened for Jefferson Starship, actually .38 blew their doors off! What a show, Don Barnes and Jeff Carlisi were incredible. The band had 2 drummers which was very cool as well.
My local Top 40 radio station in Winston-Salem, North Carolina played this song heavily in 1980. This was WSEZ 93.1 FM known as Z-93. Those were some fun times! I thought this song was a major national hit. I was shocked to learn later that this song missed the Top 40. It made it to position 43 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart. This is my favorite song by 38 Special.
Sometimes you hear vocals and you're just blown away. That would be Donnie Van Zant. The harmonizing is also amazing and 38 SPECIAL is such a phenomenal band. This is true Southern Rock at its finest.
My very favorite band, along with my brother and our college roommate. Three New York City slickers and we absolutely loved 38 Special. Still do. Saw them three times in the mid-80’s, up in the NY-NJ area, then more recently this summer in Virginia. Only Donnie Barnes remains of this once powerhouse group, but they still rock. Chain Lighting- that gave me chills…
I saw these guys open for Rainbow back in may or so of 81in Lansing MI at the Civic Center downtown. It was Iron Maiden, 38 Special and Rainbow. I saw them again in the summer of 83 on their Special forces Tour I believe it was. Cheap Trick opened that show. I was in the front row and couldn't hear shit for 3 days afterwards.
Saw them in Butte Montana in 83 with ZZTop a bunch of us took 4 way window pane and squezzed into the front and like you i couldnt hear like you , my boss gave me a few days off to get better
The 1st time I saw them was in the early '80 w/ Jefferson Starship; JS asked them to leave the tour cuz the crowd wanted to see them more than JS! And I went on to see .38 Special many more times, always a fun time~
I can dig that ...saw them too at Cleveland Richfield coliseum same yr..iron maiden opened up then 38 special and rainbow.. Blackmore was mad when they lost power for a few seconds and smashed his guitar tossing broken piece in the audience! Singer was joe Lynn Turner...a good front man!
41 years ago, this killer show was filmed. MAR 26 1980 ..38 Special @ Rainbow Music Hall, Denver, CO. Wish I was there. I couldn't get tickets. It sold out.
I grew up with this album. Later in life the x wife left me dead and on my knees for a bald headed slug. So naturally i picked myself up😎, got in shape and rebounded with a hot young lady. So my favorite memory of this song now is watching that new hottie go through my music and discover this album. She fell in love with it. And so did I, all over again. 😎 Thank God for 38 Special and bald headed men.
My very first concert ever my 15 the birthday . 1980 awesomeness!!!! Now here it's 42 yrs later an I have tickets to see them dec. 17 the in renfro valley ky. Come full circle.
+Tommy Hazlewood I've never really understood this...you see it in a lot of places that Donnie Van Zant is lead vocals which was certainly the case maybe early, early on when they were doing more southern rock but hasn't been since they started being mainstream rock...in fact I really don't understand what he really does. He plays a little guitar and dances around and does some backing vocals, but I wonder if the rest of the band eventually outgrew and overshadowed him. But he's always put out there as 1 or 2 in the order of the members listed...often 1st as you see here - and he consistently is in the middle of photos like he is the front man when he's not. Just weird.
@@JeffGeorgalas, Donnie V. (one of the original members of the group) wrote a lot of their songs and was a lead singer for some of them--certainly nowhere near Don Barnes, but to say he didn't add shit is a bit of a stretch.
I saw these guys a few times over the years. Always awesome. In 2003, I saw them in a small venue called The Dakota Creek Roadhouse, in Blaine, WA. They blew the roof off the joint. But when they played this song, the place literally went into a frenzy. The bartenders were giving out free shots for the entire song. Even the band was taking shots from the crowd. LOL, there were even cops inside, rocking with everyone else. Great memory via 38 Special.
@@larrymccauley6956 I was there for the 54=40 show. Had no clue as to who they were and they were f'n awesome. Funny, my ex just drive by 2 nights ago an d told me it was vacant, too. I really miss that place. The whole drive up there, the drive home, with the moon coming through the trees. Great venue. I don't think the owners realized what they had. 38 Special nearly blew the roof off that joint. Walter Trout, Rick Derringer., etc. Miss it all. Got wasted with the guys from Blue Oyster Cult, in 2002 up there. Great times.

My co-guitarist and I have been working on it for 2 rehearsals and it's kind of tricky. The timing on some of "Rockin' Into The Night" chords starts on the 3rd beat which doesn't feel natural until you get it down pat. Thank God the guitar solo isn't super hard. it's definitely sophisticated but doable with lots of practice.

As a fellow Montanan I must say all the bands I’ve seen in Montana wind up pulling the best shows out of their asses and tear it up.
Yep - I saw them in late '80. They tore it up for sure.

Don Barnes sang lead on all their hits, not Donnie Van Zant. He's the one without the hat.
Looks like Van Zandt didn't do much to me. I hope he at least co wrote their songs.

There aren't a lot of singers that sound every bit as good live as they do on their recordings but Don Barnes sure is one of them.
