I have a pretty good theory on that, and it's not meant to excuse that shyster practice of theirs. Basically, most radio stations will have maybe about two dozen '80s hits, usually the ones that were most overplayed back then, and overplay them again. That leaves out a good 20-dozen other songs by other performers back then, all of which deserve more respect than they ever got. That's why I still make my own mix-tapes, usually with examples of those other 20-dozen songs that never get airplay anymore...and ought to.

I was 12 yrs old and taped a penny to a post card and got 12 records from Columbia.....wild eyed southern boys was one of them...still one of my favorite albums ever
I was born in 1949, and I have had the most incredible good fortune to have heard fantastic popular music throughout my life - or at least up until the turn of the century or thereabouts! This band enjoyed a certain success, but their music was seriously underrated IMHO. Don Barnes could really belt one out! My ears just caught the bar jukebox playing ‘Hold On Loosely’ on Better Call Saul, and my poor wife had to suffer through my pathetic attempt at singing it!
Every year I play this on my tape (YES, TAPE!") player when I drive my 1989 Cadillac El Dorado North Star, and it NEVER fails to put a smile on my face! 38 Special - Skynnard may be dead & buried, but it's descendants WILL, *RISE AGAIN!* ...case in point! Long Live TRUE Classic Southern Rock!
Great song but I DON'T get the video. Did she get married or not? And that other woman, was her man with her before or after the wedding which may or may not have happened? And WHO did she shoot? I know 80's vids were loaded with metaphors and symbolism but this one is very confusing.
Best live band I ever saw and I saw alot of bands. They sounded as good live as in studio.. 2 drummers made it great.. You understood every word they sang.. Drank beer with Don and Donnie one time.. great guys..
This is my favorite 38 Special song. When I first heard it I was trying to cope with a break up with my first love. I was 17 years old and I was in extreme pain. Isn't it strange how an emotional feeling can cause physical pain? Isn't it also strange how a song can mend a broken heart?
I remember the very first time I heard this song. I was in the kitchen getting a cup of coffee before I went to school that morning. This song came on MTV and it blew me away, I couldn’t stop listening to it and singing it all day. There is something about this song that gives me a feeling of utopia every time I listen to it. That was 40 years ago and I still feel the same way every time I hear this song. A true masterpiece. Viva la 80s!
Van Zandt was a BEAST and I have no idea why this band didn’t get the recognition they deserved in their hay day; to me they were trail blazers with there double drum kits similar to the Alman Brothers
38 Special released too many songs that sounded too much alike, and then they released music for movie soundtracks which is the kiss of death to most rock bands in the long run. It is too bad because they still put out good music.
@@Too-Odd There are a ton of bands you could say that about BTO ELO STYX but non of them had the talent of 38 Special; vocally or musically. Their sound was exactly what it was Southern Rock on steroids!!!!
@@robertbyington7715 Southern fried rock to be sure, but more talented than ELO or STYX? That is a tough bet to cover. You are talking Jeff Lynne and Tommy Shaw? As far as BTO goes, I never really liked them all that much, which is strange because I liked the Guess Who.
@@Too-Odd Sure someone said that all the 38 Special songs sounded the same and I said no different than Styx and ELO; it wasn’t a comparison of talent but just all the songs sound the same
@@robertbyington7715 In making CD road compilations back in the day, I never had a problem with ELO or Styx sounding the same from song to song. Excellent 38 special song, the horses, vintage car and a beautiful woman. Probably one of the best visual videos of the time. And kudos to the director for that shot at 2:19 as the vintage car enters. It bridges the connection between the horses and the 20th century very nicely.

No better decade, no better fashion, and no better music!!! If I could have ten years of my life back I'd take the 80s!!!

These guys are so good. Their sound is unique. Great rock: southern style, great Melodys, great vocals. I carry several of their songs on my blue tooth. Would not be without them.
They were a great southern rock "pop" band. Were they the ABB or Skynyrd? I think you know the answer to that. Those bands were the trailblazers, bands like 38 special were just picking up the crumbs, which is fine. They were tasty crumbs.

I'd go back and live the 80s again in a heartbeat. These guys were the first concert i ever saw.
Beautiful music!❤ how beautiful was Julianne Phillips? Stunning!
What a jawline! And that hair!
I am 65 and I love all of these songs from.th 80's 😊😅🎉😂❤❤❤❤❤I am a Indiana girl. 😊
I was 12 yrs old and taped a penny to a post card and got 12 records from Columbia.....wild eyed southern boys was one of them...still one of my favorite albums ever
Got to see them in 1983.
Two drummers too.
Been wearing my .38 Special CD's out lately.
It's 2024!
Good music never dies!
every generation says they had the best music, but I believe the 80s was the best in country and rock and roll
Hold on Loosely and every young man's anthem, Fantasy Girl.
Every year I play this on my tape (YES, TAPE!") player when I drive my 1989 Cadillac El Dorado North Star, and it NEVER fails to put a smile on my face!
38 Special - Skynnard may be dead & buried, but it's descendants WILL, *RISE AGAIN!*
...case in point!
Long Live TRUE Classic Southern Rock!
I miss the 80s. The music was off the chain, and we were convinced no one ever had it better. We were right!!!
This is probably my favorite .38 special song. Video is incredible.
If there is one music video that deserves to have its filmed parts scanned, is this one.
scanner Danner
Great song but I DON'T get the video. Did she get married or not? And that other woman, was her man with her before or after the wedding which may or may not have happened? And WHO did she shoot? I know 80's vids were loaded with metaphors and symbolism but this one is very confusing.
She got married
When you get married, you have to to be the one to say goodbye 👋
Donnie Van Zant's voice is spectacular. Nearly every song was a hit. What music. What times. We didn't know how lucky we were.
Not Van Zandt that’s Donnie Barnes singing Van Zandt rarely sung because he didn’t have a decent voice.
I saw .38 Special last May. They still sound just as good as they did in the early 80’s!!!
Best live band I ever saw and I saw alot of bands. They sounded as good live as in studio.. 2 drummers made it great.. You understood every word they sang.. Drank beer with Don and Donnie one time.. great guys..
That's awesome!
They sounded great a few years ago when I saw them.
Her husband has a pretty good bad I hear.
drank beer with them every sat. night at the barrels in pensacola fl. in the late 70's
Thank God for 38 special. I always feel 40 years younger. Thanks 4 Makin me feel like a kid again.
Hadn't heard this song in forever! Played one night on my radio station! Sought out this video & also ordered the cd! ROCK ON!!! ✌️🤘
Dude this song is so amazing. Love the 80s MTV vibes. I really loved many of 38 Special's songs. They had a great sound.
@@Too-Odd
There are a ton of bands you could say that about BTO ELO STYX but non of them had the talent of 38 Special; vocally or musically.
@@Too-Odd
Sure someone said that all the 38 Special songs sounded the same and I said no different than Styx and ELO; it wasn’t a comparison of talent but just all the songs sound the same
@@robertbyington7715 In making CD road compilations back in the day, I never had a problem with ELO or Styx sounding the same from song to song. With 38 Special, I had that problem because many of their hits use the same or similar sequences of the same chords. I like 38 Special, so please don't take this as a slight against them.
Excellent 38 special song, the horses, vintage car and a beautiful woman. Probably one of the best visual videos of the time. And kudos to the director for that shot at 2:19 as the vintage car enters. It bridges the connection between the horses and the 20th century very nicely.
The beautiful woman is actually Julianne Phillips, the first Mrs. Bruce Springsteen .
Shoulda been a Mustang though.
Don't know if anyone else mentioned it, but, the woman in the car is Julieanne Phillips. She was Bruce Springsteen's first wife.
@@christahernandez316 I did. 👍
Love the shot where car is coming out of the flames too at 2.05 👍🎸
Saw .38 Special last Saturday night. They put on a great show, as usual! I was a teenager in the 80’s so this music really takes me back 🙂
I just tripped over this video......never saw it before. I've loved this song as kind of a "deep cut" from these guys and even developed it as a karaoke favorite.
Good Lord, I miss the 80s.
Love this song! One of the most underrated bands of all time!
Watching the herd of horses running is my favorite part of the video ... just beautiful!
The feels this song brings....my fellow GenX'rs know what I'm talkin' about. Man...we grew up in the best time
38 SPECIAL - 80's, definitely, Unforgettable and Unique.
What about: "MY HEART NEEDS A SECOND CHANCE". Thanks for sharing these gorgeous melodies. 🎸👍🥁😉🎹
This gem popped up in my FB feed. I had forgotten about this song. Now I can’t stop playing/watching it. Takes me back to 1983. Sophomore in high school, cruising the streets in my 1981 Camaro with the stereo blasting, so lucky to have grown up in the awesome 80’s!
I purchased this record, back in 1997. Fourteen years after its released. And I still use to play it loud. For the Good Times!🎧🎵
I lived in the south in the heyday of southern rock and as I recall, this band was considered new blood. It took a long time for me to appreciate their music. Now I love their stuff. Just took awhile to grow on me. Then i bought the "Live at Sturgis" dvd. That cemented my opinion of them as a truly great southern rock band!!👍
Married, divorced, 3 years in a University, 2 years operating a M60A1 @ North Fort, 2yrs in Duetschland as Combat Engineer supporting the 12th Panzer Division(Bundeswehr), joined an apprenticeship(retired with 33 yrs service in 2021) and remarried all in the decade of the eighties. Now let's talk about the music.....Dio to Duran Duran, Howard Jones to Harry Chapin, Thirty-eight Special to the Thompson Twins, Fodelberg to The Fine Young Cannibals, Bananarama to Bon Jovi, Pet Shop Boys to Paula Abdul, Aerosmith to Anthrax, Culture Club to The Cure! No better decade, no better fashion, and no better music!!! If I could have ten years of my life back I'd take the 80s!!!
Essayons!

Late 70’s thru the 80’s early 90’s was the absolute best time to grow up. The music is and will always be the best, my 20 yr old daughter thinks some garbage is music when it sounds like dogs barking to me.
This music always reminds me of driving down a country road and feeling free😊❤
How aren't they in the Rock -N- Roll hall of fame yet. Love 38 Special one of the great bands of the 80's
Please don't get me started on the r&r hall of fame, It really is a total joke
Because they refuse to kiss ass 👍!
Because it is a scam run by grifters.
My god, hadn't heard this in decades; forgot what a great tune it was and still is.
Saw these guys in 86’ in Lake Placid NY and it was one of the best concerts I’ve ever been to. Such a great band and great songs. Thanks for the memories .38 Special!
I loved recently seeing them in concert. Even now they rocked the house. Me and my husband song is caught up in you. It was so magical hearing it live
Wow, some good ol southern rock .A for sure keeper in the song and video, great memories great band, keep rockin.
If I had one song to listen to.....that rhythm guitar is like a drug!
... saw these Gents live last night at a fair venue in a sleepy little fly-over state of Wisconsin; in their late 60's, still delivering; dream show... I never went to many shows in my teens, twenties, and thirties because of busy work and religion; now, making up for lost time in my forties; amazing...
For all those on here who say this is underrated, you weren't around when this came out. This is real music.
Wild horses could not drive me away from those 80's girls.
An absolutely brilliant band. Don Barnes is a once in a generation talent. Their videos were always as stunning as their music…
They rocked when I saw them!
@@LoneLee2022 They’re headed to these parts in November. Tickets secured!
I saw them and met the band in 1980. Great guys! Don Barnes has one of the best Rock voices that I've ever heard! Spoke to Donnie for a few minutes also!!
2024 and listening from Melbourne Australia. This song is just amazing even after all these years. 38 Special Rock!
Great song and great video. Videos were so good back then.
Brings back memories. Please take me back to the 70's, 80's.
This has to by my most favorite songs by 38. Love the instrumental, as well as the words. Have lived this song many times.
My favorite .38 Special song! With the venerable Donnie Van Zandt on rhythm guitar!
My hometown band. The greatest era of music there will ever be. I remember buying 8-track tapes of these 70' and early 80's bands and rocking out. Life was good.
Yup, much respect from central Texas. Love 38Special
Im 65 and I grew with many bands ,from the Beatles, Stones, Hendrix, Joplin, etc, etc, 38 special is truly a good band, love these guys, stay safe everyone!
I saw them in concert. Bon Jovi was the opening band.
These guys were a powerhouse, and with the horses and scenery this was a beautiful video.
I love 38 Special the whole time hearing their songs played on the air waves during the 80's. Cheers for throwing into this video, those glorious, magnificent unbridled horses 🐎 ❣️
Powerful song and a super video. I was nuts for Julianne, the look in her eyes.
what she look like now
@@m42037 Probably like a beast!
@@bigjohnson7415 I looked her up, she's ok, not fat, she's still got her long hair. I never thought she was smoking hot when she was 20, just good looking
@@m42037 I can agree on that. Old age happens to all of us, if we survive that long. Beats the alternative!
@@bigjohnson7415 She's not that old, I can name a list of women in their 50s-60s that are really hot. Like I said lot of women let themselves go and get fat and cut their hair off, Raquel Welch is 80 and still smoking hot! Dawn Wells was still hot at 80 before Corona killed her in 2020
Got out of Marine Corp boot camp when this song came out, great times back then. Spent the next 12 years in the best group of brothers and sisters.
Saw them twice in the early 80's. They put on such a good show and had such catchy tunes. Not sure why they don't get the respect they deserve. They were good!
I saw them again after ALOT of years (25+) a few years back.
Gonna see them again the 24th of this month. Not what they once were, but still enjoyable.
Totally forgot about this band, thanks for the trip down memory lane.
Great Song and a video you never see very often.bought the album the day it came out...
Rock is the music that touches the soul.
What wonderful song and wonderful band.
I'm Brazilian and I'm turning 43 today. It's been about 10 days since I discovered this band and I'm loving a lot of their songs.
My all time favorite rock-n-roll band. These guys knew music, were very talented and rocked our generation. I have great memories of a happier time of life, every time I hear .38 Special or when I see a .38 Special ;)
The 🇨🇦 scenes of the wild horses running free 🐎 are just *breathtaking* ! Well done ! 0:54 🎥 🏆
Wow, just when I think I'm makin' progress leavin' the 1980s behind and all that was great about it. Then dadgummit I remember and find this song and I'm instantly transported back to my teens and a time when America was still America. Yes you young folks who are finding this music for yourselves-I commend you and can truthfully say that everything you've heard 'bout the 80's is in fact true. It was a fantastic time to be alive and young.
Something you don't see too much of anymore, just raw talent.. Best decade ever, best voice ever.
Great job on the resolution in this video. Julianne Phillips is Beautiful. Love this song and video production. Thanks
Thank you. I was racking my brain trying to remember her name.
Too bad her taste in men sucked.
Loved her in the Fletch sequel
Who was the other girl???

He's such an underrated vocalist.
And Don Barnes is a great guitar player too.
I don't believe even pitch perfect was around back then.
Don Barnes is such a great singer
I saw .38 Special many years ago. Maybe around 1980. The singer was tossing out cans of Budweiser into the crowd and I caught one.
Damn that's awesome
I have not heard this song in probably 30 years, brings back great memories of the 1980's living in SoCalifornia
