Yes, the studio versions on Ten lay waste to the unplugged version everyone wants just to see Eddie BUT the studio audio quality, the pristine mixes and just hearing them for the first time when it came out, makes 10 their immortal album that will always be listened to. Reactors should listen to it before doing live, they would then know what the actual song really sounds like, it sure does not sound like what she thinks it is. P!us the official video, Wow!

Yeah it’s a very sad story Rachael, bullying at school, abuse and lack of attention at home drove him to shoot himself in front of his class at school; an awful thing to end his life that way but it happens 😢.

Yeah, such a pleasant-sounding song to have such a dark lyric, lol. And I like how the lyric isn't overt in it's meaning. "Jeremy 'spoke' in class today", as in, the quiet kid was finally heard. Even without knowing the back-story or seeing the video, it's still easy to infer the meaning, but it's not explicit. That's good song writing.

@@Arkryal These days with all the school shootings you'd probably infer that he shot someone else but the point still remains. Sad how relevant this song is today, I don't think Eddie had any idea how bad this issue would get when he wrote it.

The original music video shows you the message of this song better than anyone could explain. I was almost that kid in high school. I just wanted the whole world to go away. If guns in my country were easy to get hold of then this would have been me, I can assure you of that. But guns are heavily restricted here and so that path was not open to me, luckily I discovered a knife instead worked better on me than others so I took my pain out on myself than others. When I first heard this song I saw myself in it so clearly. Back then when bullying happened we were simply told "Sticks and stones will break your bones but names will never hurt you. Utter BS, the name calling and bullying hurt more than any broken bones I ever had. I'm glad you ended up staying alive, glad you found a path to walk that keeps you here, continue being strong.

I would never recommend that someone check out an unplugged version of a song that wasn't originally intended to be played that way BEFORE hearing the original. It's a cool alternate take, and Eddie steals the show, but you do lose something not hearing the song as originally presented (not to mention the visuals of the video).

I agree, I feel like the whole end of this song with Eddie singing sounds instead of words really conveys a sense of desperation.. like when you feel so much but with no way to speak it, just like the confusion and chaos in this little boys mind. The song is based off of two stories. 1 being the story of Jeremy Wade Delle which gave Edie the inspiration for it but it also took into account a kid that Eddie bullied in high school that jumped off the roof of Eddies high school one day kill8ng himself. Eddie wasn't there that day but of course he heard about it. So the he hit me with a surprise left is actually refering to the kid he bullied that committed suicide.

Eddie is such an emotional and expressive singer and it really comes out in their music. I remember seeing an interview with their Old Drummer Jack Irons and he said when Eddie goes that place he's scary and they all leave him alone. I also love that Am (I think) that Stone plays over & over again at 6:22. It's so alarming and gives the song this uneasy feeling. Such an amazing performance. If you ever get a chance you should listen to the whole set from beginning to end.

15 year old Jeremy Wade committed suicide in the classroom with his father's gun, in front of his teacher and classmates. That's the meaning of "Jeremy spoken in the class today"

It was sad bc: ""Jeremy" is based on two different true stories. The song takes its main inspiration from a newspaper article about a 15-year-old boy named Jeremy Wade Delle from Richardson, Texas, who shot himself in front of his teacher and his second-period English class of 30 students on the morning of January 8, 1991" source: Wiki
That's why it's so sad and emotional..

I’m not sure she got from the article that this song is about a real life news story. It was a clarion call about something we didn’t realize was coming. A white affluent boy from a good part of town brought a gun to class and stood in front of the classroom and killed himself with it. It speaks of how his wealthy parents were not nurturing and were more concerned with appearances than what their child was trying to tell them with drawings depicting a triumphant figure on a mountaintop overlooking the dead in pools of maroon below. It tells of his classmates picking on him as he seemed harmless but that he. Surprised them with violent outbursts… it’s depicting the signs of a disenfranchised young boy with access to a firearm. Jeremy was released in 1991. This was about 10 years before the mass school shooting at Springfield OR and Columbine CO. That Jeremy shot only one person makes it seem unrelated but the fact is, he was a precursor for a tragic problem we still cannot or will not seem to correct in our society.

What a song. I think the going to the minor key and the raw emotion associated with the story makes this almost a sacred sound barely equaled in many songs of the era. A piece that has psychological parallels and tonal impact is Larkin Poe's "Mad as a Hatter". Thanks for your analysis.

Actually, the line 'Jeremy spoke in class today' refers to him shooting himself in front of his high school English teacher and 30 fellow classmates. There was an article in the newspaper about a 15 year old boy who committed suicide in his high school english class in front of his teacher and 30 fellow classmates.

Eddie is picturing himself as somebody who could have done that, as he sings the song, that's where some of the emotion comes from.

you need to watch the original music video. When Jeremy "spoke" in class, it wasn't with words. His early death was self-inflicted, in front of the class, and that was him speaking to the class about his pain.

Rachel great job with your reaction to the live performance of Jeremy from Pearl Jam . It's based on a newspaper story about a boy how committed suicide in front of his glass mates by shooting himself. I know it's very sad knowing that and still very sad knowing things like this still happen like that now.

And: Please, don't feel compelled to refrain from mentioning how absolutely beautiful this man was and IS. It's not just the looks. I see it on your face. Eddie Vedder can be felt. All the band members are sweet to the eyes. They put him up front reason, am I right?
Check out his album Ukulele Songs. It's just too perfect. The album Into The Wild is also something to behold.

Thank you for sharing this video. For those who don't know, "As a story song, “Jeremy” combined a real-life incident with Vedder's own bad childhood memories and imagination. The inspiration came from the tragic story of Jeremy Wade Delle, a 15-year-old boy from Richardson, Texas, who took his own life in front of his classmates on January 8, 1991."
