That scene where Mei's mom is hiding behind the tree before Mei turns into the panda also happened to the director Domee Shi. In an interview, Domee Shi said it was her first day of middle school, and she had made a new group of friends. One of her new friends said, "Who's that lady with the sunglasses behind the tree?" And Domee Shi looked over and saw it was her mom. 😮

Fun fact: when Mei gets scared she throws her hands up, this is because real red pandas throw their paws up to appear larger & more intimidating to opponents in the wild (there’s a video of one at a zoo trying to intimidate a rock, it’s pretty funny 😆).

“There are strict moms in every race.” COULDN’T AGREE MORE. Being 1/2 Asian I’m uncomfortable seeing so many reviews pin strict parenting only on Asians. And on BIPOC parents in general (granted what makes Asian parents stand out is their strictness on EDUCATION of all things). Maybe this why most BIPOC parents aren’t allowed to adopt.

I am absolutely in love with this movie! I was 12 in 2002, so I relate to the era too. I love how relatable this entire film is! I felt so embarrassed for Mei when her mom went to Daisy mart and the pads thing. Literally mortified! I can only imagine. I’d absolutely die. She’s braver than I am because I probably wouldn’t have gone back to school.

The thing you said about parents not wanting their kids to struggle, it really hit close to home. Growing up I loved painting and dreamed of being an author. But my mom forbade me for going into something “useless” that doesn’t pay well, and tried forcing me to become a surgeon. Joke’s on her, now I’m just an overworked cook making minimum wage. 2. Going *only by* the text of the film, and assuming they're all cis, they all show attraction to boys and only Priyah shows what could be construed (extremely subtley because Corporate!Disney is still extremely phobic) as an actual same-sex attraction.
      3. Unrelated, but I think Miriam is extremely Jewish-coded, which as a Jew makes me happy.

The Talmud recognizes 6 different physical configurations of humans. We often ended up (I am a transgender man) working in temples , as dibia and see’ers, or protected in temples along with others seeking sanctuary, where it was forbidden to harm us. Ancient cultures often had roles for us, as they had roles for everybody else. The roles weren’t always the same across ancient and indigenous cultures, but the similarity is that we were assumed to exist, and assumed to have a place.

Even though I grew up about as far from Mei Mei's experience as possible (white girl with overly permissive parents who never enforced any kind of standards), there is definitely a universality to this film. Going through the chaotic mess that is puberty & juggling the identity you hold within your family with the identity you hold in your peer group (and all the growing pains therein when those roles change and mature as you do) is something everyone can identify with to some degree.

There’s scenes in this film that are stunning. The work that went into the scene where Mei is in the car with her mom after the party is incredible. The lighting is gorgeous! Many other stunning scenes too.
The scenes that get me are the ones where Mei is scared. I can imagine not only feeling scared but also feeling alone in those moments and unfortunately there’s so many moments like that irl, especially as a teen and even as an adult sometimes. I can feel that way about my chronic pain and migraines sometimes and in those moments, you just wish someone was there with you.
Another scene that broke my heart and makes me cry every time is when young Ming looked at Mei. Her face is just pure terror and heartbreak. I wanted to be an animator because of scenes like this. It’s not real yet still has the ability to strike you deeply in the heart. Sometimes I feel animation is better at conveying than live action film. I think it’s because facial expressions are more exaggerated and therefore emote more. This is a big reason I love Anime.
