I like that Te-ka is volcanic (earth & fire), so when she is enraged, she is destructive, but volcanic soil is some of the most fertile, so with her heart she becomes Te-fiti with the power of creation. Also that demi-god of wind & sea is the opposite of earth & fire in the 4 elements tradition.

The big theme of the film that resonated with me was that everyone had to figure out “who they are.” Understanding yourself, not just the image you present to the world, is vital to true happiness.

the part between moana and te fiti always makes me cry. te fiti reminds me of the phrase "hurt people hurt people". and the way moana handled the situation with te fiti, as opposed to the aggressive (?) way maui does, is so beautiful. most often than not, people who hurt us have been hurt in the past and dealing with them by hurting them back is not helping. the lines in the song moana sings to her is just so beautiful... "i know your name... they have stolen the heart from inside you, but this does not define." makes me tear up every time.

This movie is inspired by a Māori myth, but the myth has a darker premise and no happy ending. Te Kā's story is inspired by that of the life-giving goddess Hine-titama. She was the daughter of Tāne-mahuta, the god of light and the forest, but he also took her as his wife, without telling her he was his father. When she learned the truth she fled from the world of light in shame and took up residence in the Underworld as Hine-nui-te-Pō, the goddess of darkness and death.
Māui came along later. He had already fished up the islands of New Zealand, tamed the Sun, and stolen the secret of fire from the Underworld, as well as many other accomplishments, and he decided that his greatest gift to humanity would be to destroy Hine-nui-te-Pō so that there would be no more death. But for the first time in his life he failed, and this is how Māui dies in the mythology. And so although we have fire, lands to live on, a day that lasts long enough to get things done, and all the other things Māui gave to humanity, we are still mortal.
The one point of difference between Hine-nui-te-Pō in the myths and Te Kā in the film -- apart from the different ending -- is that Hine-nui-te-Pō is not fiery; she is a dark and cold being. Her name means Great Lady of the Night. I think there is a Hawai'ian volcano goddess called Pele that the film-makers mixed in to create Te Kā.

I would say the movie is inspired by "Polynesian" myths, from Maori (New Zealand and Cook islands), Maoli (Hawaii), Samoa, Fiji and Maohi (French Polynesia)...

    • @danielcopeland3544
      @danielcopeland3544 2 роки тому +10

@@mikeputoa1531 As a whole, yes. Māui belongs to all of Polynesia. The song in the middle of the film is sung in Sāmoan and Tokelauan, if I recall correctly. The film-makers made a particular study of Hawai'ian, Sāmoan, and Māori culture.
But the Te Kā element in particular comes from the Māori version of the myth. If you listen to the directors' commentary they say that Te Kā was originally going to be called Te Pō, which is taken directly from Hine-nui-te-Pō. Te Pō is Māori for "the night".
Te Kā is Māori for "the heat" or "the fire". Sāmoan is closely related to Māori and Hawai'ian closer still, but in both of them _kā_ becomes _'ā,_ while the definite article _te_ becomes _le_ in Sāmoan and _ke_ in Hawai'ian.

New Zealand's flag has four stars known as the "Southern Cross", these are the stars that guided the wayfarers to where they needed to go, as shown in the movie. Eventually, those same stars lead them and other settlers to discover New Zealand.

In actual history, there was a 1000 year period that the voyaging Islanders actually did stop voyaging, and then they took it up again...
This is the period that Moana is set in.

The "volcano to green growth" sequence at the end is very reminiscent of the sequence of "The Firebird" in Disney's "Fantasia 2000." The computer generation technology has advanced since then, but it is interesting to see a similar transition done in different contexts 16 years apart.

If you line them up by historic date, Moana is probably the most ancient in the Disney princesses. They're generally depicting the ancient spread of Pacific Islanders from Southeast Asia all the way across the Pacific eventually to Hawaii. All the cast members are Pacific Islanders, whether it's New Zealand, Samoa, the Philippines, Hawaii. As a Filipina, it makes me so TT^TT
I love that the arc in this film (sort of man vs nature but nature's personified) is resolved by one woman recognizing another. While I watched your reaction I 'tattooed' (pen) > because it is true for situations even TOTALLY different eg: not disney fantasy, but simple burnout from unregulated capitalism

I love this movie and have a particularly special connection to it. I was taught all manner of our cultural myths and legends. Growing up in New Zealand and being of Maori descent I grew up hearing the story of Maui and Mother Ranginui and Father Papatuanuku. We are taught that Maui, with the power of his magical fish hook, pulled up the islands of New Zealand from the bottom of the ocean for our people. All Polynesian legends have similarities as all are stemmed from the same story. We are sea faring people, master navigators, people of earth and water. In my family and in my opinion, most Maori whanau (family) we have a close connection and deep respect for our ancestors. We come from a long line of chiefs. I can trace my ancestry back to the Captain of my Tribal Waka (The Canoe by which my people arrived in Aotearoa aka New Zealand). Great movie and great reaction. 👍 Kia Ora Kemi

Legend has it, those people went on to discover two islands which at the time was covered in a long white cloud, they called that land "Aotearoa" which simply means "Land of the long white cloud", which was also called many hundreds of years later: "New Zealand". The people renamed themselves Maori and believed Maui fished up the islands for them to discover. I believe it is no coincidence that there were many New Zealanders who were part of the making of this film, including Jemaine Clement, who I am glad you seem to love.

I would not say they renamed themselves maori... they are the "tangata maori" or "maori" that can be translate by "native people" or "native".
For example people from Hawaii are Maoli or kanaka Maoli and people from French Polynesia are Maohi or taata Maohi... those words sound and look pretty similar.

Alan Tudyk not only voiced Hei-Hei, but also Villager #3, the one who asks 'Couldn't we just...cook him?'
While the film is computer animated, Maui's tattoos were done by traditional hand animation.

First of all i would like to thank you for this brilliant reaction video my dear K.S.O., it gives me new reason to watch Moana one more time! 😉
Your smile is The eye candy and your laughs are The ear candies... 😳
The moment when you figured out that Maui was voiced by Dwayne The Rock Johnson makes me smile... earlier in the movie when Moana met Maui for the first, he did an eyebrow raise, this was one of the "signature" of the Rock.
I read all or almost of the comments/explanations/analysis about the movie, i have to say they are pretty good and match to your reaction video.
I would like to add mine and i hope it would bring some details/elements nobody talked about.
When Maui stole the heart from Tefiti, we can see a symbol on the Tefiti's chest and the heart itself, you mention it as circle... in fact it is a whirl in "Polynesian cultures" it represents the breath of life, it can be link to the wind as well.
Many times in the movie, we can see Moana and other characters get nose to nose, in Polynesian cultures (from New Zealand/Hawaii), this is a traditional way to greet people, it is called hongi/honi. That way you share your "breath (of life)" one with another, in the myth it was said the God named Tane (which means Man) gave life to the first woman called Hine ahu one (which means woman made of earth) by sharing his breath of life.
The Maui's hook fish got that whirl shape, as mention in the movie he is known as the demi God of the wind...
Without her heart Tefiti turned into a hostile and dry land, Maui as the wind blew the "living" away, it lost the water.
Someone explained Moana means Ocean, in "Polynesian cultures" the grand parents used to choose the first names of their grand children... many times in the movie it was said Moana was the chosen one. Was she chosen by Tefiti's heart itself or by the Ocean or by her grand Mother?
That being said i think the heart blows Moana away to Mau and his fish hook with the help of the ocean.
"Finally Maui has come back to Tefiti" (an approximative Rock's catch phrase like) when Moana shout "i am Moana", she accept her destiny as the messiah.
Before Moana put the Tefiti's heart back, they performed the "hongi"... it's a kind of new "circle of life", the loop is looped.
I am sorry to bother you with that long comment...
