I fully understand the concept if keeping the skate (toes pointed) straight, push directly as possible out from the hip as well as inward in DP technique. But watching you and other pros DP, there seems to be ( looking fron front ir behind) a significant carve on both under push and outward. Am I missing something, thinking too theoretically ? Is it a mix if the two, am I sloeing myself down by not trying to make something of an S carving action? Thanks for the great channel.
Great question. It's a cue we use because nearly everyone opens the skates/hips up way too much when they push. To make speed, the skate must travel away from you, the trick is that it needs to travel away with an amount of resistance that allows you to balance, control, and transfer weight to your next foot. If the skate moves away too fast (skate is pointed out/ hip is open) then you have no ability to do any of those things as easily as you need to for consistent skating and you will very likely max out at a top speed that is well below your physiological capability. The idea is that if you think about keeping your feet straight it will provide that resistance you need because of the engagement in your hips (feels like a little wall of pressure) and the skate will still open slightly to achieve the lateral travel it needs to create speed for you
57 years old. Haven’t been on inline skates in 20+ years. Bought a pair to get some much needed exercise. Grew up on hockey skates but never really got proficient on inlines. This video made SO MUCH SENSE and helped me to visualize how to inline skate better. Will be checking out your other videos as I get my skating-legs back in action. Thanks!!!
Still skating, Jim? 62 here and just getting back into skating, hoping to get legs in shape for ski season. Pulled out old skates and got new wheels and bearings and it's just like riding a bicycle, you never forget. Did not forget the feeling when I ended up on my butt the second day, either.

Thanks for the tips. My comments are 1. For city skating, put weight on heals are much safer since you never know where the cracks are, and 2 pushing to the sides depending on speed since I can not possibly skate up big hill by pushing to the side.
This video is about improving speed on flat ground, which you won't be working on when you are dealing with cracks and hills, and that's fine. You're right about tips for cracks and hills.
What an amazing and informative video you did! You are the first person I see saying clearly that the goal is to have a lateral push. That's what I could see the pros doing differently, but I couldn't quite understand what were they doing to be moving like that. Thanks for the whole video! It's all great tips!
This is exactly the tutorial I've been looking for. It's a bit hard to judge whether the bellybutton is in the right place, but other tips are just great! Thank you so much Joey.
Man, thank you so much. Been skating for a year and just taking one session keeping these things in mind has greatly improved my skating. Its improved my speed and endurance a lot, but I didn't expect it to also help with balance and concentrating weight between legs. I'm finally able to start using my heel brake and t-stop. They still need a lot of work, but I just didn't have the balance to even start them before. Your tips about coming down softly with the other skate and about pushing to the side particularly helped with the balance issue.
@@JoeyMantiaSkates hey man good to finally see your videos I just subscribed. Skating has been the biggest thing in my life ever since I was three years old. I am fourteen now and I have been on a couple teams, it is just amazing to see my favorite skater ever give me tips and help me improve

I was wondering why I felt off while skating after it had been YEARS since I skated. Watching this made me realize I had been doing wrong to begin with lol
With tip 1 you say bring your weight over the center of the skates, but do you keep it there during the corners or do you bring it more to the back? Because I thought your skates would steer better when you are more on your back wheels when you are on a 200m track?
I always try to keep my weight in the middle of my skates and push there as well. If you can find a constant balance you will be able to manipulate your skates easily (turn them), but often times if that skill set isn't strong enough your weight will rock forward and back in your skates and it can feel like they simply won't turn and/or that you're not in control, in which case people tend to sit on their heels. This is probably because focusing on putting the weight on just the heel prevents that rocking motion, but puts stress on some wheels more than others as you skate. My thought process for targeting the middle of the skate is that distributing your weight evenly over all the wheels will both help you roll and grip better vs loading so heavily on just 1 or 2 wheels if you can manage to engage your core and control your body enough to find that balance.
@@JoeyMantiaSkates thank you for the great and clear respons. The reason is not instability but coaches with an ice skating background who always shout keep your weight on the back.

Hi Joey, thanks for making these instructional videos. I picked up inline skating about 5-6 weeks ago and noticed a big improvement in speed and efficiency yesterday when I focused mainly on constant compression and lateral push via hip abduction instead of hip extension. One area that I find challenging is going uphill. I can do it but it all feels really not fluid or graceful. I often find I lose steam and have to catch my balance before going at the hill again. Would making a video on how to skate uphill more efficiently be something that would interest you?
Many thanks !!! I learned, ages ago, that the modern HIGH ski boots were created with the help of USA military MD just after WW2. The US military were tired of all the broken ankles of military personnel who were coming back from the German Alps where they went skiing during their leaves of absence. It's easier to "glue" back tibia &/or fibula than the ankle & healing was easier & faster (?). All this to say: What's the advantages of using low shoes rather that rigid ankle holding higher shoes with the same 3 or 4 wheels bases ??? Thanks again

Awesome tips, thanks! I’d love to hear your tips on getting a quick sprint start.
Hi
I’m a BEGINNER beginner. I haven’t skated since I was 10 yrs old a long ago, and am now just 4 days into learning. I’m sure these tips are super helpful but a little too advanced for me just starting off since I couldn’t tell much of a difference between the correct and incorrect way of doing each technique. I’ll come back in a few months
Soooo... 9 months later, how are you doing? :) I just started last week
Muchas gracias 🌿🙏🏽🤍
Hi Joey, thanks for making these instructional videos. I picked up inline skating about 5-6 weeks ago and noticed a big improvement in speed and efficiency yesterday when I focused mainly on constant compression and lateral push via hip abduction instead of hip extension.
One area that I find challenging is going uphill. I can do it but it all feels really not fluid or graceful. I often find I lose steam and have to catch my balance before going at the hill again. Would making a video on how to skate uphill more efficiently be something that would interest you?
it's on the list. skating up hill never feels good, even for the best skaters on the planet
Perfect exercises to focus on at nu first training on ice. Thanks again meastro!!
Very educational, thank you so much
