Coming back to Shaun's tutorials after a year of practice and progress. Now better realising the level of skill and expertise this man has, it is truly magnificent how smoothly he is able to demonstrate every tiny step of the learning curve. People with this much skill and expertise usually forget the baby steps and skip to the shiny stuff and expect you to do the same which is frustrating and demotivating for the beginner. Shaun deserves a huge shoutout for his incredible ability to empathize and for keeping the "novice inside" still alive.
As someone who has been on ice skates since I was very young (playing hockey), and also has quite a bit of experience on inline skates, I find the basic skills, fundamentals, and edge control explained in this video to be very appropriate for it a beginner skater
Best tip for any beginner is to teach them to drop their weight in to their hips, rather than breathing air down into the lungs newbies draw air into the top of their lungs which pulls their weight up making them much more unstable.
Thank you Alex and Shaun. I am about 4 months from being a complete beginner and backward skating is what I have been working on for the last month. I'll be adding the C-carve exercise and will practice it backwards for a few days to ingrain the motion before attempting to powerslide for the first time. I am very excited to learn the powerslide and now feel ready for it. I just want to reiterate my praise and thanks, you have broken things down wonderfully in this video and have shown a clear progression with something for everyone to practice.
When life gives you lemons.. ...strap up and skate backwards.. That cigarette butt example took me back to striking class, jab ( move forward and drop your cigarette), hook (sip your coffe as you put out your cigarette..).. I love the universal nature of human motion.. Thanks for the vid, I'm teaching my chirren to skate..
Great instructional lesson. As a guy who has coached AAA ice hockey for 20 years, I can fully appreciate how useful this instruction is. Excellent points, clearly explained and demonstrated!
You are such an amazing teacher. I just got back into skating after not doing it for over 20 years and I have never learned this skill before because there was no one to teach me back then. Teaching us all the fundamentals and at the same time teaching us not to form the bad habits like turning the to the other shoulder to power stop is just next level teaching! Thank you so much. I hope to have mastered this skill with your video soon!
This guide is GREAT. I went from barely being able to go backwards to being able to do backwards crossovers in just FIVE days! That is insane. I do gotta say, that I found that it was better if I didn’t follow this tutorial step by step and did what I felt was right for me. If anyone is having difficulty following this guide, I suggest you try that out!
It's so good to see that Safety is important in your videos!!! So crucial to wear a helmet, hard to recover from a head injury. Excellent tips and transition in explaining the steps.
I have seen many backwards skating videos and I wasn’t able to do it until I saw this tutorial. The way you guide it step by step is amazing. Thank you so much 🙏🏻
Omg! Thanks so much for that! I’m trying to teach my son to skate backwards. And you’re saying just the right words to express what feels easy for me and hard for him. Thanks a lot!
Hey Shaun, I started back rollerblading after 20 years and saw this video 1 year ago. I remember it and had problem finding it. I have to say that you are very inspirational and your attention to detail in this video is exceptional. I have revisited this video because I finally feel comfortable to start learning this skill. I just turned 65 and with the Pandemic and shut down, there is very little to do to stay in shape here in my city of Ottawa.
This lesson is incredible. Thank you so much. I learned so much just by watching it over and over again and trying to remember your practice suggestions when I was out skating. But, today, I actually brought you with me while I was out on my skates and practiced all of the lessons in order after reviewing each one - it was incredible how rapidly I progressed in skill and confidence! Amazing! Thank you for breaking it down into itty bitty pieces in such an incredible way. Your pedagogy is phenomenal. You made this so learnable. And practicing all of the parts as you demonstrated increased my confidence and my physical and intellectual understanding. Wow! This was such an amazing learning experience. I am so grateful.

Just tonight I was at a skatepark and for the first time EVER stumbled onto skating backwards after coming off a slowing roll from the wall or halfpipe. I could roll backwards pretty well in the halfpipe but never from a standstill and as you know, rolling backwards is not the same as skating backwards. Been trying for months. Had I come across this video I could have started months ago though! Such great instructionals here. This will be my new go to video for getting into that backwards flow.
Thanks for all you do man. Asha and you have brought me to being an intermediate skater within 6 weeks. I still recognize I have so much more to practice and learn though. You're an amazing dude.
I've been skating for years, playing hockey etc. but it's nice to see how you teach it. it helps with understanding the fundamentals and is even more so helpful for teaching my girlfiriend who just got some skates and is trying to learn.
Thanks to you both! I did not need to see it in slow motion to grab what I had to do. Everything was well explained: what to do with the feet, hips and where to put the weight, step by step. When you start to skate, at almost 48 you don't feel at ease when you don't know the technique. Not like children: 'Mom just jump, you will feel how to do it!' AWESOME Shaun and Alex. I learnt this from you guys about two years ago and I was naturally good looking over right shoulder so I only ever skated backwards looking over my left and levelled my left to be as good as right but I still naturally look over right when I have speed, Also your one footed backwards lesson in another tutorial is the best for backwards balance. Fantastic to see some more tutorials from you. Keep up the great work cause if you can make this 50 year young man as good as I am in two years you can and probably have taught so many people so again keep up the great work you do!!!

Excellent video... thanks so much for the very detailed explanation. I think my starting point will be the lemons to get used to moving backwards. I have tried other ways to move backwards and as soon as I start moving I feel terrified as I feel I'm gonna fall and hurt myself.
