Always funny to me that the Byzantine scale is seen as evil knowing it's a scale used a lot in Greek orthodox religious chants
Religion is the ultimate evil 😈
Also it's the scale used in the Dick Dale song "Misirlou" which most people know from Pulp Fiction.
@L O The answer you're looking for is kittens.
brb starting band
It's the "Middle Eastern" scale for me. Nile uses it a lot.
Where was this video when I was 14 and too ADHD to learn scales?
This is gonna be invaluable to a 47 year old who's in a riff writing dry spell and needs some inspiration.
Subscribed and very happy, cheers man.
Just don't feel like you're alone in that struggle. Same age, same dry spell. I wish you much luck in unlocking your creative flow again.
BERNTH 🖤
I see, I'm not the only one googling "metal scales"
There are many books nowadays where all of this is explained. And also there is the guitar grimmoire….so actually its not hard to be inspired
That creepy pad sound background when you play the scale, it's like somebody whispered murder to me. Super evil man!
pedal tones baby
"Wrong kind of scale" But that was pretty heavy too ;)
He said 'weight' lol
It is called HEAVY metal...
When I saw that part all I could say was OH LAWD HE COMIN
Interesting. When I noodle around, my ear tends to lean towards the Byzantine scale. I didn't even realize that until now!
Also, sweet BC Rich!
For me it was phrygian dominant
@@ValenteRAPiaui Absolutely fantastic scale
Awesome, Scott! That's the kind of content that I enjoy on UA-cam! Going straight to the point about dark/evil sounding scales/modes, chords etc, and showing examples of them. Two thumbs up for you, my dude!!
Plus love the creepy background music during the scale tutorials
Hey scott will we ever see a full original of yours?
Yes 🤘
@@ShredmasterScott Hell yeah man rock on!
Thanks for this video! I've searching the internet and UA-cam for unusual or scales that could be applied to metal and this is by far the simplest and most clear video I've seen!
Blues scale, the most metal of scales
I mean, when you think about it, metal is basically just blues, but with the energy cranked up to 11. Lots of rock and metal sorta stuff comes from blues, most notably the use of copious amounts of distortion
2@@themorrigan1312 yp87888f
@@victortesla4198 I wonder does that mean doom metal is just blues cranked to 11?
A metal music theory video? Rare
Even the acoustic scales are scary!
dale jacobson jazz posses the scariest chords and scales.
A most excellent video! I'll definitely be using these scales! Thanks!
best new lessons on youtube so far by now. love and beers to you from Malaysia!
Thumbs up just for the "wrong kind of scale" joke, caught me off guard, funny
This is a badass video bro so freaking helpful
You've got me thinking and seeing music theory in ways I could never have imagined; that's diabolical! ...and I've loving every minute!! (edit for spelling, lol)
This really helped me understand the different modes and how they can be useful in writing riffs and solos, thanks Scott! \m/
This is not lesson,just demonstration.
cheers Ed!
@@ShredmasterScott Thanks a lot Scott, looking forward to more of your contents.
Great video. I always wondered what other scales were used in metal besides the blues, minor, harmonic minor and diminished scales. I shall wonder no more.
Scott another good one man. I think you'll really explode by putting this educational stuff out there. Maybe some metal analysis, but the more educational it gets, the more people dig it. I like the format, too. Very hard to misinterpret. Most people show you a scale 80000 times like there's no pause button or something. lol
Awesome as ever, Shred! Would love to see a video from you where you harmonize two guitar parts.
Edit: just saw your old "twinkle twinkle" videos. More please!
I share your videos in my group on FB - Musical Overload 3:) this is the best one yet
Im just beginning to learn to play guitar. Thanks for this great scale lesson!
Loving these "Evil" videos you've been posting. Just wanted to point out that your Instagram link in the description is pointing at another "Shredmaster" though. xD
Best teacher on youtube. I'm subscribed for sure!
that's what I like to hear!
Excellent video Shred Master
Awesome bro I'm gonna try these. keep rockin brother 🤘
Thanks for this video, excellent breakdown without all of that bullshit waffle. Straight to the point, really useful. 🤜🤛
I entered the shred zone today. Was very impressed will come again
The Hungarian minor immediately threw a story idea in my head.
Great lesson. Will be sure to apply this. Fan of the Aeolian.
This was one of the most helpful videos i watched.
hey scott i dont do any other social media so this is the only way i can get anything to ya, got your master of metal on udemy (heartly recomend it) just wish ya went further indepth on the theory. still love the vids i always seem to learn something new
EDIT:
also id like to add that all these videos got me thinking outside the box so to speak. loaded up a drum track after posting originially and ended up playing some of the heavest stuff. in standerd. 11 out of 10
Def gonna be practicing these. Thanks. Also, I subbed after watching for like 1 min.
Sick Mockingbird man!
4th mode of harmonic minor! Brilliant!!!
You can do really neat things with the whole tone scale. I learned about it singing some Randall Thompson pieces in college choir - it can sound very disorienting without being overly dark or dissonant. Great video!
keep the great videos coming!! thank you
you are awesome
Fuck yeah, excellent video, I like how you don't just show the scales you show how to incorporate them into your songwriting. Thanks man this is going to be very helpful
That evil laugh bro!!... Love it.
Love the Phrygian dominant and the byzantine scale ❤️
your guitar tone is epic
I love shred till you're dead, 48 and still smashing the frets. I don't watch many theory vids, but I find this one to be useful and have many reasons to review its knowledge.
I'm a bass player but I LOVE watching this channel
Got my sub n like. Tapped tapped the bell too. Good information
That Hungarian minor riff sounded very Candlemass 🤘
luvin the vibes here.dude u trippy. u got my sub n like
Very tight playing and good vid. Can you put pictures of the fretboard markers sometime along with the tab?
Masta Scott!🙌🏻
A most excellent guitar Shred
You fucking kick ass man. Also, I love the pad sound when you're playing the scales.
Nice mockingbird dude
Great video dude! New subscriber!
I play a lot of surf guitar. These scales are also über surf :)
Misirlou by Dick Dale is in E Byzantine, right?
Kylie McInnes Black Metal is literally just surf guitar with loads of distortion
dude your riffs slay! the hungarian minor would make an awesome King Diamond song!
Nice guitar, bro 🤘😈🤘
Dorian 4th riff was awesome🤘🏻
Very metal. Though wouldn’t regular Phrygian also count? That can be crushingly heavy when done right.
Yes but it‘s overused
Awesome video!
Phrygian dominant or double harmonic for me!
EDIT: nice, double harmonic got a mention. And having watched, really like Dorian #4!
Like nr 210, you are the best (and a beast? ) Dark Master!!!!
Nice guitar!
Damn those riffs were really cool. Really like your writing
honestly, if you apply these riffs and really commit them to memory, you can make some really nuts ass riffs.
I like the way you show the scale using acoustic guitar.
I love the hungarian minor. 😮That might be my favorite as it sounds so mysterious and illusive.
I am Serbian metalhead, Byzantine scale is perfect for me. Fantastic video, Shredmaster Scott.
Missed Mixolydian b6, used by bands like Meshuggah, has an ethereal yet dark sound
Master Scott’s kitchen is beautifully evil
Awesome Scale Choices. I think you could've added the Hirajoshi scale too. Some other 5 note pentatonic scales or ragas sound evil too. However they are just parts of those scales minus 2 notes.
Right now, I feel charged with evil energy right to the brim: I'm not going to clean up the kitchen tonight, har, har, har - am I evil, or what?
Great vid as always, and I'd like to throw in a few questions:
As for the chords: say, I want to go all hungarian (because who wouldn't?) in the root of A - so I take the set of notes starting from A, and go wild building powerchords with them and Sus4-chords? Any guidelines for a proper start if you wanna get evil? Thanks a lot!
Finished my work early in class just to watch
...AWESOME DUDE...love your attitude direct clear and simple no " watch me shred !! " shit....!
Love that custom mockingbird, the mockingbird is my daily driver, I have a mockingbird one only one pickup bridge and one pot I have chucks x2n in there. I'm building a special mockingbird but it's crossed with another bc rich body shape a certain hard to tune guitar. To name it I have to change two letters. Carved the body from ash have the shape still 6in thick might be a archtop. To bad bc rich hasn't built anything for years
Dorian #4 is beautifully used in the beginning of Anesthetize by Porcupine Tree.
Wicked playing! I really wish they had named it the Lokian scale. :)
Thank for your secrets, bros. Aguante 😎.
Duuuuude. Sick vid my man. I need to know though, what is that Satanic looking guitar??? 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
Thanks for this list! You really know your stuff. I was thinking the chromatic scale might be the top, but i guess that's more of a flavor scale rather than the meat and bones of metal... but Master of Puppets though...
Buckethead's whole tone solos rock my world !
Awesome video. 👊🏻🎸💥
Another one I’d recommend is Lydian #2, the 6th mode of the harmonic minor scale.
Love the B.C.Rich!
Fucking awesome as usual Master. SHRED TILL YUR DEAD!!!
very lynchesque ...shred heaven.
the whole tone has just summoned a Diabolus in musica, i'm freaking out!! i'm calling 911
Holy shit, it's full of tritones!!!
Great vid, ty
you should do something with Ron Jarzombek's Circle of Twelve Tones
Holy fuck, amazing video. I am subbed!
Great video...
" to achieve ultimate evil " ... nice video ! ...
4:03 that is a fuckin sick run
great job.. just found you. Subbed !
That red guitar is like a evil Paul Stanley guitar!!
A Harmonic seems different than how I do it. I only play 2 notes on the D string and B string. Cheers and many thanks for the great videos. I guess the ones you are doing are 3 notes per string and mine is CAGED pattern, think I need to change to 3NPS for shredding. Also, do you need to know all positions of these scales?
Locrian is the sound of thrash and diminished/chromatic is the sound of death metal.
Voice of metal awesome
I feel like anakin turning into darkside fr
Very well!!
Harmonic minor, Phrygian Dominant, and Diminished seventh are three examples of some most Metal scales!
Phrygian is perfect!!
Upd: tried to play phrygian dominant. does your guitar down a half-tone?
After gaining knowledge from you master, I always like to do
HAHAHAHAHAHA🤘😈🤘😈🤘😈🤘😈
