The worst part is when you have experience playing music and you have melodies in your head- but you have no idea how to actually transpose the notes in your head into the notes on the instrument. That's the barrier I keep butting up against.

    I love you.
I had this fucking problem for the first 3 years of my playing that I was centered around inventing new techniques, the emissions I wrote from grueling time and inspiration lasted maybe a month before I wiped them off my cock.
Just a year ago I decided to care a LOT less about inventing techniques and I have a full song from that period that I still enjoy playing almost daily, and only 2 weeks ago I wrote a song (with newly learned singing) that I might keep till I'm in my 40s

I'm at 2:02 in the video. Decided to pick up my acoustic to follow along. Realized that it's tuned in DADADD because I'd been trying to make it sound like a sitar. Since I had two octaves of power chords to pedal on in the bottom 4 strings, I thought I'll let my ears and feelings do the decision making and started playing a random scale on the high D strings. Came up with a tune that seemed to be on the D F F# G A B C# D scale, which felt oddly celebratory. Turns out I just reinvented what they call the Shoolini scale here in South India in the carnatic classical music tradition. Thanks to your video I already feel inspired to noddle more! Now I need to watch the rest of the video 😁
Edit: In hindsight nothing you said in the video had anything to do with what I just noodled. But hey, inspiration can come from ANYWHERE 😁

Loved the phrase about composers back then. The concept about training for creating music is amazing, IMHO. I myself always loved music, but couldn't quite get familiarized with an instrument for several reasons. But I never gave up, because I had a feeling musicality can be expressed in many ways. You can feel musicality by ear or playing something. Nevertheless, not only feel, but you can always think about musicality and analyze stuff with the proper mindset to create new stuff, just like philosophy.
Great exemples, great video and great song!
    Cheers \,,/

Great summary of very useful techniques for composing, O´Diabolical Master.
Here´s a curveball: Blending metal with folk,- here in Europe it´s been a style for the past twenty years,- Celtic metal from Swiss Eluveitie (listen to Rebirth and Thousandfold for examples), Balkan metal in odd meters( based on the meters of their traditional folk songs: Balkan Gypsy etc- Jinjer-Pisces and Teacher Teacher are good.places to start), Viking metal with the melodic riffing from the likes of Tyr ( Faroe Islands) and Kati Ran - Suurin (Dutch/Norwegian/ Finnish,- as Metal as it gets and not a distorted guitar in sight!).
The question becomes: Song structures: II-V-I, I-V-VI-IV, I-IV-V,- how to use standard structues for melodic metal writing blended with the characteristics of, say, US Folk music,- ie Bluegrass Metal? Country Metal? Blues Metal?,- or are they already covered through Southern Rock and Dark Country?
And finally: How to make all of that diabolical?
( Love living in the van btw.- miss the wife though...)
