- An eight year review of the Bear Grylls Ultimate Survival Knife by Gerber.
Check out my very first bug out bag video from 7 years ago here... • Bug Out Bag
Love the statement “”Hey dumbass, don’t throw your knife up against a tree”” for this statement alone I give him two thumbs up!!
I never had a problem with this knife now how ever the bear Grylls ultimate pro survive is the best
I’m glad to see someone give a good review and not dog this knife just because of the BG name on it. I think it’s an excellent knife for the price.
Thanks! Out of all the videos I looked up on this knife yours has been very informative in demonstrating. Thanks again.
Glad you found it helpful. Thanks for tuning in.
Gerber's contract with Bear is expired, but they kept this knife design and patent. It is currently available in green with dark grey. I have the Bear version and the basic Gerber version, little to no differences aside from color change and no Bear name. I'm no fan of Bear, I just wasn't interested in his show, but I really liked the knife. Same with the newer non-Bear version. They are great knives. The blade is made from 7Cr17, it's tough stainless, not amazing, but good and tough. To be honest, I buy things based on whether I like the item, and these are good investments. To ensure my ferro rod doesn't fall out, I used the short lanyard from the whistle and looped it through the ferro rod hole in the little handle, then around and under the lower velcro loop at the bottom of the sheath. Thanks for a good review of a good knife. 👍🏻
Thanks for tuning in.
Do you know if the knife is full tang?
2nd that is it full tang?
@@josebalcarcel6502 it is
@@zarkavian5812 it is
I've had mine about 12 years now. Still in pristine shape. Couldn't agree more, it's a great knife and the BG on it almost made me not buy it lol. Glad i did in spite of the name. I mean, bear is entertaining but even as a young man just starting to learn about this stuff it was easy to see that he was more about the shock value and showmanship than genuine survival. When I wanted real tips early in my education i watched Les Stroud.
Erobin died.
I waited until the "BG" was no longer on the handle to buy one. Different color. They're now green. The older ones I've seen had a different pommel, to break glass...The ones with the "hammer" are more utilitarian.
Great review thank you
I used to camp, fish and hunt regularly and 10 or 15 years ago, I remember seeing these in Walmart for $20 or so and thinking that it was a GREAT deal for the money, but as I'm an over the road truck driver, I primarily need a fast opening, non spring assisted locking blade knife with a deep cary pocket clip and 3 1/2 blade length maximum as I do want to both be able to cut myself or others out of a seat belt if, God forbid, I'm in an accident and possibly partially incapacitated, but also, I do need it for slicing microwave burritos and potentially as a defensive weapon, so I never bought one of these, but seriously, if I were looking for a solid, camping, hunting or fishing knife, this would actually be much higher on my list than $100, USA made buck knives. This is a well thought out purpose made design and I think that I might still try to buy one on the secondary market or Temu, as I still haven't found a better all-around camping fixed blade knife and it doesn't come with stupid, useless execessories, but rather logical, better than nothing, but mostly passable actually useful backup accessories. I still really want one and should I have to live in the woods for a month with one knife in any price range, this would still be in my top 3 choices.
Great review. It helped me make my mind up very quickly. I ordered one today👍
Very nice review, always get the feeling when watching reviews on this knife that the reviewers opinion on the knife is greatly influenced by heir opinion on Bear Grills. Nice o hear an unbiased opinion.
It would have been a bad review if that was the case. I really don't like anything about Bear. But, the knife hasn't let me down once. Thanks for tuning in.
@@TRPufnStuf can't say I am a big fan of his TV programmes but then again I haven't watched many of them. Gerber at least seem to be a pretty decent company.
Loved it much! Thanks! Really nice review! Have a wonderful day
Thanks. You too.
Hello Erobin, I keep a kit in the back of my car. I like to gather edible weeds and always need a knife I also have a little troth for digging up plants. I forge and look for things that are in nature. I love to hear how and why you like or dis like something. Thanks for sharing. pretty nifty that you could pound a nail in too. So true about no need to through a knife. split wood and started a little fire. that is really a great tool. thanks for sharing. 💕NonnaGrace
That's a great idea Nonna Grace. Thanks so much for the continued support.
Gerber had a lot of good gear but then for a while they went way cheap on quality. it is nice to see they are back to better quality
This one is about eight or nine years old. But, like I say... It hasn't failed me yet.
Great Review
Good review. Most of the Gerber stuff i ve bought works well.
Yes, i have been very pleased with all of my Gerbers. Thanks.
I have a Gerber knife it is one of my favorite knives that I use
I went through a Gerber face a long time ago. I haven't been disappointed with any of them over many years. Thanks for joining in.
Awesome video
Thanks
Good review , thanks for sharing , God bless !
Thank you.
Nice, that's a real opinion of someone have used his gear
The knife is awesome. The guy who's name is on it, not so much. Lol. Thanks for tuning in.
@@TRPufnStuf lol,I never purchased it.
Very nice review, sir. Appreciate it! Just got a hold of the knife for 40 about dollars. Greetings from Mexico! 🇲🇽
Thanks. I appreciate it.
BG for the name, orange for his favorite drink
I'm confused. Lol
I have a couple of Gerber folders but that is it...
Gerber has never let me down. Since I was a baby. I really liked the peas and carrots. Lol.
@@TRPufnStuf LOL
very nice, i have never had a knife wear out, broke a couple
I have actually never broken a knife that I can remember. Thanks for watching
Any one know we're I can get the orange sheath...i got the knife at a pawn shop
It's just called Gerber Ultimate Survival knife. It's black and green instead of orange
Nice knife! i have the same one, i always wear it when i go to the woods!
New friemd on channel
Thank you sir.
I do love this channel, watched the original review then pretty much straight away get to see how it lasted over eight years of use! very cool, 100% agree with with your evaluation of Bear Grylls, guy is a fraudster
nice video
Thanks.
I'm not a fan of Bear Grylls either. I used to have a small parang style machete with his name on it. Very efficient tool. I used to beat the dickens out of it. Cool video, thanks for sharing.
Lol. When i first read your comment I thought it read beat the chickens. Lol. Yeh, not a Bear fan here at all. Thanks for watching.
They still sell them new, just without the BG branding. It's called the "ultimate fixed blade knife"
It is still sold as Gerber Ultimate, no BG...
I have this knife for 13 years now I think it's still going strong retired tho cause the fire starter is no more 😂 gonna get the new ultimate one. I like Bear Grylls he actually taught me alot about survival and got me into preparedness as a young teen but I've learned alot from like UA-camrs as well
It's an ok knife. I like mine. And I also am a fan of BG. Do what he writes and not what he does for ratings.
anybody know how to get a replacement ferro rod that fits into that sheath?
...or any ideas for what to do with or put in that slot?
Unsure. You'll probably just have to try out different sizes. Measure the hole that it goes in and search for one that diameter. Then you can cut it down to length and add a flat handle. Maybe?
Or maybe try contacting Gerber. They might have ideas.
Yeah the shank size is one thing but the tough part would be finding one with a compatible groove/o-ring to slip into the sheat to lock it in and keep it dry
I've looked for sheath. No such luck yet
Can you wear it on your left side for left handed people like myself?
Yes the blade goes into the sheath either way.
Always seen them at Walmart just never got one.
Walmart? Really? Hmmm. Thanks for watching.
can it use as a combat knife?
That would be up to the individual. Thanks for watching.
👍🏻
How can I buy it from Bangladesh?
As I mentioned in the video, I don't even know if they are still being sold. In the U.S. or anywhere. Sorry I can't be of more help. Thanks for watching.
Beargrylls knife is out of sale.
No more product because beargrylls is no more a model of gerber knife.
For the money I really like the Cold Steel SRK a lot. Of course for what I really use knives for the Mora Companion/HD and Robust knives in carbon are all great for well under $20. Then again so is a CV bladed Case Sodbuster-lol. Also the Condor Bushlore in micarta is really nice. I have concluded I have too many knives to officially pick a favorite. The SRK is a really great kit knife though. 99% of the time I actually carry a Spyderco Endura 4 FFG plain edge in VG10 trying to warm up to the Endela model…but I’ve carried an Endura for many years.
O.K. thanks for watching and commenting.
Is the knife full tang?
Three quarter tang I believe.
I would buy this knife a long time ago if it didnt have that stupid orange color.... i dont wanna be conspicuous unless i choose to. Thanks for good information video!
There is new version in green and grey , look's a lot better.
looks nice i stayed away because of bear
I think a lot of people may have done the same. But, they sold a crap load of them still.
Awesome video sir and I love how your flat honest yea bear grills is fake as idk what

What happened to your throat
Those gloves are the cleanest I've ever seen. Makes total sense you had this knife for that long. Hell, it'll probably last YOU a lifetime 🤣
My experience and background I would never use a stainless knife. I don’t use serrated on my outdoor survival knives. All in id rather just buy a Ontario SP series.
Not a fan of Gerber using Chinese 7cr stainless. Never found the need to pound nails with my knife.
