    I know everyone has their personal opinion, but I love this knife. The reason being is that it has everything you can ask for from a knife and that's all that matters. It has a sharpener, hand guide, whistle, fire starter, sheath, comfortable grip, strong hilt, full tang, balanced, and keeps a good edge what more do u need from a 70 dollar knife. Again I respect everyone's opinion but I personally love this knife

      Rust, cheap sheets, bad materials means your safety. This guy is on contract this knife sucks. Get an esse, tops, Utica and go with a premium material. Mora is not full tang but the modified Scandinavian grind will save you.

    This knife is well worth the money, I am really happy with it. I use it camping, fishing, hiking and it hasn't let me down yet , I even have used it as a spear too spear fish in shallow water which worked really well but I guess there will always be people who think that a more expensive knife is better . But I guess everyone has different opinions and some people just try to find faults because they have nothing better to do but hey "whatever blows your hair back "

      jamie smith The people who are knocking this knife do not own one or used one. There is nothing you can do with a $200 knife that you cannot do with the ultimate pro. I have several expensive knives and I would put this knife up against any of them, even my ka-bar.

    Well in Australia you never carry this type of equipment in your vehicle because the cops love stopping people forcing themselves on your privacy and stealing for themselves whatever they think is 'handy. Their excuse is: ' it's a 'dangerous weapon your carrying''. They have so far stolen over at least $300.00 worth of my personal travelling equipment I carry as survival gear because I travel a lot. They always insist on searching my gear and then things conveniently disappear. The last thing they took was my brand new tomahawk and they didn't even try to hide the fact they were taking it. Stinking thieves!

    I Got one of these knives after seeing this video. Great review. The thing that convinced me was the Hammer test. And it has been worth the Purchase And still serves me well although the whistle and fire steel where lost after getting snagged on wind fall. Because I had placed the whistle on the loop on the fire steel. Creating the snag hazard. Thanks again for the Great review.

  • @ttommyunger

    I use my knives for their intended purpose: to cut things. I respect them, I don't use them as a chisel, pry-bar or ballistic weapon, so I don't much care how much abuse they take during these antics. I like a 4" or so blade, I consider serration magic for certain cutting chores and I use a Gerber Steel (no longer made) to put the last dry-shaving edge on my blades. No need for sharpening tools with my knife, diamond or otherwise. I'm Airborne, Ranger and Recondo Qualified, so don't need the survival pamphlet or whistle, thank you very much. I use a lanyard around the thumb and across the back of my hand when cutting, so I don't worry about slippage, wet or dry. The full tang on the newer model is a definite plus, but I just don't see me doing anything that will break my original in two. The whole nylon sheath thing just pissed me off, so I removed it and attached the hard sheath directly to my gun belt with a leather strap and pop rivets. I don't plan on upgrading, since I require partial serration. In fact, at 74, I don't plan on replacing my Gerber, having every confidence that it will give me good service in the field or garrison for the rest of my life. The bright orange is nice, but only for fools like me who occasionally set their knife on the ground in the middle of a task and then have to look for it. In short, I find the original very satisfactory and plan on keeping it in daily use. The video was well-made and informative. BTW, I am no great fan of Bear or Gerber, just require a serviceable knife with the features I require, cost is not a major factor, but I don't want to go into the field with anything I'm not willing to lose, with the exception of my life.

    I've had the original BG Gerber survival knife for 4 years and it's been worked hard. I keep it sharp and it does the job well and without incurring any damage. I can't really fault it to be honest. I don't see what some of these guys are whining about and criticizing a good everyday product for the average guy to use. If you want super special steel and super this and that you'll pay through the nose for it and likely never use it except to show your buddies what a wonderful new knife you have. If it's important to you so much then go spend your money on what pleases you most, not criticizing and whining like spoiled prima donna brats.

      Idk about that. I paid $170 for just my silent hero and couldnt be happier with this knife. Not a special steel, just 1095 but also diff tempered. I have this edge hair splitting sharp and it will hold that edge a long time. Not to mention i love the design of the handle and is very comfortable to use. I guess everyone has their own tastes.

    To all those who have negative comments about this knife. I have only this to say. To turn up your nose at a product because of its gimmicky branding, is just as ignorant as to fall in love with it for the same reason. I took a chance and spent the $45 on the Ultimate Survival knife with the same reservations I'm sure you all have, and its become my favorite camp knife. I use it whenever I go on camping trips, I use it often, and heavily, and work my blades hard. I Think its a fantastic knife, and recommend it all the time. Are there "better" knives out there, well yeah, but its kind of like using a .50 BMG or .30-06 to hunt deer when a 6.5x55 will do the job just fine. Just because this knife isn't done exactly the way YOU think it should be done, doesn't make it junk. Anyone on here who says this is a trash blade obviously has never bothered to try one out.

    • @JayWandersOut
      @JayWandersOut 10 років тому +3

      Thank you for having the first coherent post I've seen so far!! I bought the Pro and love how it feels in my hands. That rubber grip makes for a perfect grip even if my hand was sweaty and the blade is solid. Sure, I hate all the stupid BG orange everywhere but beyond that it is an awesome knife. Some people are so closed minded that they will take what they think they'll believe and go to the grave with them regardless of anything. They'll tell you the sky is green before they admit you were right.

    • @paulhiebert1112
      @paulhiebert1112 6 років тому

      I 100% agree. Interesting how the only negative comments seem to be from those who have likely never even held it in their hand. Notice the have ZERO experience to draw from ? (mmmmm.....) yet everyone who has it swears by it. Pretty obvious whos opinions are worth reading and whos are not. Mine should be here in a week, and if it performs at least 50% as well as the very best and most expensive knives out there (probably actually closer to 80%) then it is a great knife for about 1/3 or even 1/4 of the cost. :)

    love how all these people think they know more than a man who served the sas, specialises in survival and is a chief scout and one of the biggest knife brands gerber about how a survival knife should be XD. I bought the survival pro and I can't find a single fault. full tang, strong steel, solid sheath with fire steel and sharpener which would never fall out as it's very secure. I did a bit of research before buying it and most knives that quality were around the same price. people think just because it's bear grylls it's overpriced

    Too many people bitching about the name, scratch bg off and its a decent knife, not a falkniven or becker bk 7 but for the price its not bad ,id say the steel is slightly better than aus8 just dont use a pull sharpener and keep it lightly oiled , sheath is actually well thought out. My advice a schrade fronteir is a better option or save a little and get a bk2 as a one tool option, get this knive if you dont care about branding it will work either way

    For the money that’s actually a really good knife i’ve seen other videos where people are literally abusing that knife it doesn’t break and the steel is pretty decent if you’re on a budget that’s actually an excellent knife I like high-quality Knives I’m actually thinking about buying one
    Pretty tough I’d say it’s extremely well-built you’re smacking that thing with a 3 to 4 pound sledge and it didn’t break the handles didn’t fly off most knives that’s most likely what will happen
    That’s actually a knife you can buy this is what I’m gonna do with it by I just Buy it sharpened good and just throw it in the glove box of my jeep so I always have it if somebody steal it’s not a big deal I’ll just buy another one

    Bear gets a bunch of crap from people yet 10 yes ago everyone loved him, only in America right, one day your drinking water from elephant turds and the next day your sniffing wine and buying land. He did exactly what he should have, unlike football stars who break a leg and are out of luck he will be able to take care of his family even after hes dead. Actually after seeing this and reading other comments I'm going to buy one just to put more money in his pocket and to support my local home businesses. Thanks for the awesome review.

      Those are nice knives I have owned one. They do have a couple issues.
      (1) if you are in a "bug out" situation , you don't want nothing orange.
      (2) I prefer a cerated base. It is better for gutting animals.
      (3) the ferro rod is tiny.
      It will do the job though.
      You can in my opinion get better. The SOG seal pup has full tang blade , it is all black, it is also designed for tactical as well as survival. It does not come with a ferro rod , but you can get a big ferro rod for about $8.00. (At least here you can) the blade is shorter but that can save your fingers! It is also preferred by lots of active military personel. They run about $50 for just the knife and sheath. Mine has never let me down.

    Great video and review! Camera work was A+
    You're right the price needs to come down.... still up at $70.52 with Amazon Prime.
    Can't justify that when you can still get the Becker BK2 @ $69.99 on Amazon Prime..... At the end of the day this knife is still for weekend warriors and Bear Grylls groupies.

    • @JayWandersOut
      @JayWandersOut 10 років тому

      Sure the BK2 is nice but it's just too big for me so the BG U Pro works perfectly for me and feels amazing in my hands. Don't forget the BK2's sheath is hated by almost everybody so you'll have to get a new one so add another $20-$30 to it.

    Just a little side note. For 20-30 bucks more (going off of the Amazon $60 price tag) you can get a much higher quality knife thats made in the US and the company will replace it for free if you break it.
    Look at the ESEE 4

    • @danmartin4552
      @danmartin4552 9 років тому

      Well I agree with you, but I would not say you even need to go to $60 for a knife that is much better quality than the BG stuff. The new Schrades maybe made in China, but they are made very well comparatively and will defiantly out do the Gerber stuff. Also the Cold Steel SRK ($70-$80) is made in Tiwan and is far superior to the BG, not to mention the Beker line. Some of the best sub $80 outdoor blades I have seen are coming from Condor (El Salvidor mind the spelling) And if you want made in America Buck and Ontario has a lot to offer, not quite as well finished as the Esee counterparts but a lot less expensive.
      What I am getting at, people looking at a Bear Grylls most likely are not willing to pay $100 on something they are new to. I am all for Esee, but prefer companies like Tops, Bark River, Scrap Yard, Swamp Rat, and so on.

    • @rustyshackleford17
      @rustyshackleford17 9 років тому

      Yeah I know there are kuch better knives at or around the same price point. Which is why I stay away from even the higher end Gerbers.
      Im not saying get a $300 blade. In my experience, you get the best bang for your buck 80-200 range.

    • @rustyshackleford17
      @rustyshackleford17 9 років тому +1

      But yeah people buying these generally dont care or don't understand what makes a survival knife good or not. They see a fairly mainstream survival "expert" and assume it has to be good

    • @danmartin4552
      @danmartin4552 9 років тому

      Yeah that is about what I would say. In the world of out door knives $200 can get you a Esee Junglas or Cold Steel Trail Master, or better yet a Scrap Yard 911. Of course if you want the absolute best you need to pork out like $500 for a BlackHeart or some other mid tech, but those are really more than anyone needs. If you keep track of a small company called Bradford Knives, you may be able to get one of their mid size knives for $150, but I am sure that will go up to the $300s by this time next year.
      And in the world of folders that will get you a Spyderco Manix 2 ($90) or a ZT 0562 ($200) is you want something more extravagant. And once again if you want the best you should find for about $1000 you can get a RockStead, but same story most functionality but more than anyone really needs objectively as a tool.

    The Gerber BG knives are such a massive step down from the pre-Gerber knives he used to use. Understand it had to lose some quality to make a reasonable Gerber price point. But even the "ultimate pro" uses a super crappy Chinese Cr-mov series steel. His previous handmades were powder forged, zero compromise works of art. Gerber could take a much higher quality approach to the BG line without making them a huge amount more expensive. I'm surprised they don't. BG knives should have an image of quality. Instead Gerber has made the brand almost entry level, which doesn't fit with the BG brand IMHO.

      For starters you are quoting the steel on the older model, not the pro which has been upgraded to what experts are comparing to a decent US equivalent. But the Question I have for you is....have YOU actually tried it or are you like all the other idiots on here forming opinions on zero experience ? No its not the best out there, but I like a heavier blade with a hollow grind is more useful overall than a Mora, and for what you are getting it will likely perform to 60-70% of what a $300 knife will for only 1/3 of the cost. But obviously you didn't consider any of this at all.

    Just some information for you guys. The metal this knife is made out of is 9Cr19MoV, which is a chinese version of 440C. 440C is one of the best American stainless steels there is and is comparable to AUS 8. Most companies "including Gerber" use 420HC which is inferior to 440C to make their knives in America. 9Cr19MoV is one of the best Chinese stainless steels there is, and is used for their pricey surgical tools and barber sissors.Gerber calls 9Cr19MoV a "Premium" steel and it is.I have seen this knife do some amazing things, and I have yet to see a video of someone breaking this knife " And trust me if there was one it would be all over UA-cam" simply because alot of haters hate Bear Grylls.Unlike the "Ultimate", this knife was made to take abuse, and you simply cannot go wrong with a strong stainless steel knife that can do what this knife can, yet come with all of the features it does, and the price at $68.00 dollars on Amazon is a steal. You may not like BG, but give this fine blade the respect it deserves. Its a affordable and dependable survival knife you can trust.1095 blades are awesome, but they rust, and in a survival situation if you don't have WD-40, chapstick, or mineral oil, your gonna wish you had stainless.So IMHO this is a great Survival Knife you can trust reguardless of whos initials are on it.

    • @Apex_grind562
      @Apex_grind562 5 років тому

      440 rusts . Give your high carbons a forced patina. The 440 family are not premium stainless. 70 bucks get a Utica, tops or even esse. Would you leave your hands in the life of Walmart??? Tops also offer 154cm, white river offers s35v, benchmade will give you great material. Save another 30 bucks and change the game! This is just a glow stick.

    this isnt "Ultimate Survival Tips" this is more or less "The Ultimate Hocking of Bear Grillis' Dirt Cheap and "You Get What You Pay For" Survival Type Tools"....you should really change the name of the channel....80% of the vids are this cheap ass chinese BG endorsed junk...great if you get paid to promo this crap, but dont act like this is a tips and prep channel....hell Gerber isnt even a good blade anymore....people should know that....when a company's name cant sell the product abd you have to celebrity endorse it to sell it you know theres a issue with the product (think Beats).....

      I have most of Bear Grills Camping equipment. Very well made, maybe a bit over priced. All his stuff is quite all what you will need.

    Made in China, But worst of all; Bear Grylls? Clearly. Not even eligible for a 1 on on the cool scale. I'm sure it's a great channel otherwise.
