  • An unbiased review of the Bear Grylls ultimate survival Knife made by Gerber, I have owned this Knife for 4 years and have decided to give my thoughts on it without getting into the Bear Grylls debate, I'm looking at this Knife as a tool, and I will give my thoughts on its build quality and functionality.

    Good video Dan, must say i have to agree with you, i am a retired knifemaker, and all what you do on your previous videos with the knife and what you did here shows it aint a bad knife, i have never used one in the field, but held plenty and they do feel comfortable, thanks for sharing the video look forward to the next one 👍

      I think the handle is one of its best features to be honest.. it is very comfortable in the hand in all weathers.
      Great to have a comment from a former knife maker in here, i didn’t know that about you..I will pin this one to the top.

    Dan, I have seen this knife being used countless times in your videos. This has to be the most honest long term review I have seen, it's done what you want and it does what you want. Bare Frills doesn't come into it really, it is the knife that counts. I would buy one, based on what you have said, and shown. Thank you for sharing your time, ATB Dave

    I owned one for a few years when the fine edge version came out. To be totally honest it was a perfect knife for my needs. Camping and bushcraft. The ferro rod worked fine with the groove on the back of the blade. I only sold it when I bought the tops b.o.b at double the price. I do like the tops b.o.b but the bear grylls survival knife did everything I needed in the woods it's a great knife for the money. I would personally recommend it. All the best. Chris

      I wished for the straight edge one for months but I got used to the serrated in the end. That flat bit for striking the ferro rod has also been great for grating fat wood, you get a nice fine powder from it.
      Thanks for putting your feedback in here, really appreciate it bud

    Hi Dan, totally agree with your views on the knife.
    I've had mine about 5 years now and like yours still in one piece and
    still as good as new ,some scratches on the sides of the blade from batoning .
    The only trouble I had was with the rubberised handle,(being I live in tropical
    north Queensland Australia).was that it felt very slimy after a while.
    The simple solution was I para cord wrapped the handle,
    Love your videos keep up the good work atb London Aussie Steve

    Nice video! I love the Bear Grylls line of Gerber gear and have a few of the items. I had this one with the serrations but they didn't hold up as well for me and I exchanged it for the fine-edge, which is kick ass. I do prefer the pro which is my favorite Bear Grylls fixed blade (I also have the paracord and the smaller survival fixed blade). It's also refreshing to see videos still being made highlighting this great line of survival tools. Thank you! I also laughed at how you introduced it as a gift from your wife and then promptly started beating it up.

    I replaced the whistle with a mini flashlight and shortened the lanyard.
    *For 15 years I've used this knife regularly. It’s been invaluable through many rugged and demanding tasks. My edge stays sharp and the diamond sharpener is convenient. The Ferro rod is a soft composition and makes starting fires easier, IMO.
    +The orange and grey design makes it easier to locate if ever lost in the leaves :) The orange "BG" logo is tacky, but it's still a Gerber.

    It is the perfect wife gift to husband knife and knife snobs can mock it and gerber all they want...it's still a successful selling knife and as you proved it can handle heavy usage for years and did everything you needed it to. Survival on Purpose had the same sentiment. Makes you wonder about the integrity of many other YTers reviews and thwir motives. Throw your knife at a tree stump repeatedly or stfu! Lol good stuff!

    “Cuts thing, lights fires, chops things” - I LOLed when you said that. What we need a knife to do!
    I’ve always thought it was weird to have a serrated edge on a bushcraft knife and yet there you are doing feather sticks and everything with it no problem (you are sooo good at feather sticks BTW, I need to practice more!).
    I saw mcqbushcraft review a knife which had an ugly plastic sheath. He said when your mates knife with a pretty leather sheath falls in the river he’ll wish he had yours!
    Great review. Looks aren’t everything. 😊

    • @CampLifeBushcraft
      @CampLifeBushcraft  4 роки тому +1

      Rosy_Outdoors I think the serrated part is also meant to double as a saw, as it’s a knife to survive with, it tries to cover all bases I suppose.
      We all have to practice stuff to get good at it, I’m not bad with knives as I work with them too.. there are other areas of my skill set that are woefully lacking .. practice takes a lifetime but it’s great fun 😁👍

    • @justvin7214
      @justvin7214 4 роки тому +1

      IIRC the idea behind the serrated edge was that it could be sharpened easily with a pebble...hmmm not too sure about that, it seemed a bit gimmicky to me but it's good to know that the blades usefulness doesn't suffer because of it.

    Good morning, thank you for the review I have owned one for many years I think for the money it’s really great I’ve used it extensively and never had a problem too many people only criticise don’t look at the positives or serve in the British Army. I’ve taken mine away many times no problem. Great grip easy to use. I don’t know what the problem is as I say too. Many people are too negative. It’s a knife under £100 even cheaper in the US, what do you expect for under $100 thank you once again

    I have this knife. And it was basically my first knife too.
    You’re right - it does everything you need and I’ve never had any “problems” with it. I’m not a fan of the grip on the handle; but I fixed that by wrapping a shoelace around it.
    Aesthetically, I’m not a fan of the colour scheme; but I guess that’s useful so you can see the bright orange. I’m also not a fan of the “Bear Grylls” decal on it because I don’t want to come across as a fanboy - but I guess it is a signature series, so you can’t really get around that.
    The fire starter and the blade sharpener are nice touches on the sheath.
    Personally, I have a pretty decent collection of knives. My personal favourite is the gerber strongarm - but this one will always also be in my pack for the fire starter and blade sharpener.

    I don't own this Ultimate knife but I was gifted the smaller foldable knife from Gerber, same color scheme, same serated part of the blade, fairly thick, good ergonomics and comfortable to hold, used for about 3 years and it's a propper good knife and it works as a tool, it's not one of those fancy craftman's sort of knives but it does its job very well.
    As for Bear Grylls I watched the show and I know the tricks and nasty bits about it...but for Bear Grylls the man, as far as survival skills and actual achievements like climbing mount Everest and serving in the army...he seems like a good bloke, shame the tv show producers stained his image.

    Nice one Dan mate, an honest review, 4 years with a lot of abuse over that time shows how good this knife is, I've got a Gerber Gator folder and I do love it but hate the serated bit on it, Gerber in the old days made some quality knives and yes they get a slating lately but perhaps if you can pick up an older one it's worth it.

    I have this same knife and I think it is a very good and useful knife. I’m glad to see an honest review of a (REAL) Bear Grylls knife like you have. About 98% of the reviews I’ve seen saying this knife is junk are all done with counterfeit Bear Grylls knives. You can always tell the real from the fakes by the Gerber font on the blade and sheath. If anyone is interested in knowing the difference between the real and fake knives go to theconterfeitreprt.com and type in Bear Grylls Ultimate knife and they show you how to tell if it’s a real or fake.

    I have had the knife and used it for a good while. Its a shade overpriced due to the logo. Gerber themselves seem to have dropped their own version in favour of the branded one. I eventually gifted it to someone and replaced it with a gerber moment off amazon. A bit smaller but just as practical. Unfortunately it didn't come with the fancy sheath. I have the Ultimate Pro, used it loads over the years, and at the risk of being boring my experience is the same as yours. it did the tasks, it did not fall apart the blade still takes an edge. My one gripe is the sharpening for the pro which is great for touching up but if you get a burr it is useless. funny enough I have never used the fire steel as out of habit I reach for the one in my fire kit.

    Yeah, it seems to be a good functional knife (as pretty much all Gerber blades are), but the Bear Grylls branding definitely drives the price on this up significantly. I (probably over)paid $81-something total for the one I got at a gun show recently (a not well thought out spur of the moment purchase, I'll admit, but it's over and done with, so I consider it a learning experience). Gerber no longer lists the BG knives on there website, so IDK what the company MSRP is, but the Gerber Ultimate (the generic version of this knife without the BG branding and the orange coloring replaced with green) is listed at $46 USD. If I'd known I could get that one for half the price, I would have. C'est la vie, as the saying goes.
    In any case, I haven't had an opportunity to put my BG Ultimate to use yet, but I have a Gerber Prodigy (which this knife is derived from, IIRC) that I have used to satisfaction, so I don't have any doubts about the knife itself. I do think the sheath leaves some to be desired, such as a bigger belt loop, a better, more accesible place to store the little survival guide than the pocket on the back (which partially blocks the belt loop when inserted), and a thumb snap restraining strap instead of velcro.

    Looks like a solid knife. I don’t understand all the hate for Bear. All “reality” tv has a bunch of fake stuff in it. Network tv is for general entertainment; want the real stuff then find it on certain channels on sites like this.

    Exactly; my knife is a tool, and I treat it like one; it is not jewelry. The BG knife is really good, tough, and dependable...it just looks graphically overdone.

    Mark Boldan I own one of these, bloody good, apart from the diamond sharpener wears out fairly quick if you want to keep it razor sharp, the fire steel you can buy replacements off the shelf, forget the BG shite it is a really good Gerber, easy to look after and is fucking strong, mine now is 8 years old and cant fault it in any way shape or form..

    Folk love to hate BG , i have some BG shirts by craghopper that I have had for 5 years , still going strong . Mind you the branding isn't that orange colour the BG eventually changed to. At the end of the day if it works then it works . Having seen it in action personally I know you are speaking the truth about it. Got me thinking about a Esse I have and maybe doing a similar video 😉

      If you can squeeze it in between Olight videos then do it 😂
      Someone else mentioned owning the trousers that are the ‘action’ trousers, but basically Crag hoppers .. I reckon it’s all functional gear but with an extra few quid on the price tag so the man gets his cut.
      Fair play to him.

    Do you ever have issues with it having so much of the blade serrated? Seems like it takes up most of the blade.

    • @CampLifeBushcraft
      @CampLifeBushcraft  2 роки тому +1

      I didn't like it at first and wished I'd got the non serrated edge. but over time I got used to it and then began to like it. when the blade is a bit dulled the serrated bit keeps on ripping through stuff.

    • @RevanJJ
      @RevanJJ 2 роки тому +1

      That’s a good point. The one I have which is identical l, just non BG anymore does the same. Found a field sharpener on Amazon for $9.99 that has a fire steel, crappy compass, but it also has a draw through sharpener one for straight edge and one for serrated that is perfect for this knife. SHAPRAL 101N.
      Oh and if looking for any new knives, check out the BPS HK5 for $30. Comes with a leather sheath and is amazing. If you need something to do heavy batonning or other action, I found a really decent knife called Swiss+Tech Hunting Knife with Leather sheath and an 11 5/8” blade, 1/4” thick at the 90 degree spine for only $19 on there. Very surprised and they aren’t Chinese. At least the BPS isn’t, it’s made in Ukraine.

    Looks like it does everything it says on the tin. Like with other Bear Grylls branded kit you do pay more to have his name on it. I have a pair of ‘action’ trousers, they are actually Crag Hoppers with BG logo on them. Nevertheless, totally fit for purpose.
