Before, I always wanted to get paid. I never got any contracts. Then, when I started made a first attempt of making a short film, it was a complete fail! I realized I talked a big game but played a small one. That was a huge dose of humility. It's been a year now, and I have been practicing doing stuff for free and boy was that helpful! So I agree, do stuff for free first, figure out your workflow, get better at it and then sell your service with confidence.

Cool tips. It's also important to let beginners know they will get a lot of people not calling back or reaching out at the start. Just don't get discouraged.

#1 for me ages ago was to always be listening to what's going on around you, ie. have situational awareness. This applies even when you are not out trying to drum up business.
Case 1: I was at a building shared by a few realtors, a pool company and a used car lot. My reason to be there was to shop for a used van. But in conversation he finds out what I do for a living (multimedia). Turns out that's what the car dealer really was into. His video clients included Young Drivers of Canada, manufacturers and architectural fabricators. He kept running the the car dealership when he bought the building and had no one to run it. He didn't make the studio being there public knowledge because it had been broken into a few times. I ended up moving in to a spare office and providing a segment of digital that he could now add to his services.
Case 2: I was cold calling a restaurant to sell something unrelated, before I got into video. A customer who was paying at the front overhead my pitch to the restaurant and that turned into several years of graphic design services for him, his wife's publishing business and his friends' businesses, because once you latch onto an entrepreneur, you often find the people they like to associate with are of the same entrepreneurial disposition.
Just keep yourself upbeat and presentable. I was never on the "sell" but I was always ready to meet a need. Big difference in attitude.

Great advice! I was doing free services, but currently editing my last free music video. Im at a point when ppl are asking for video deals, which lets me know that I'm there, the point where all hard work and money can pay off. My advise, offer atleast 3-4 free to dirt cheap videos or as many as you want until you are sure of your work..but don't break yourself doing so...don't put too much into it than you can afford..set a certain budget..my budget was 30- 40 bucks for props. In due time, it will all pay for itself.

It so true what you say about the service being priority #1. People think your brand is your presentation. Your brand is actually your customer experience. The way you conduct your service with the client determines their customer experience and determines your brand.

Awesome channel dude! Love the honesty. I get lots of people asking me on mine how they can start filmmaking and getting paid work, and I pretty much tell them the exact same thing. Build yourself a portfolio and be honest to the person you're pitching to, and the work will speak for itself. I went around to all the 'nicer' restaurants in my neighbourhood and offered them a free video and photos with an instagram/facebook promotion strategy plan. I hadn't thought of the farmer's market though, that's a brilliant idea! :-) Subbed!

I've read a few professionals asking photographers not to offer free creation for exchange of anything because that is disrespectful to photography field and degrading yourself as photographer. However I really had not many stuff to practice with, and it cost to buy new things to shoot (it is always better using new items otherwise too Much time on post cleaning) . I did exactly what you did in tip #1, and I got paid for second shooting because they like my work. I think existing experts giving advice not to offer free work because they do not want new people to disturb their pool.

You need to have a portfolio to get paid work and the more $ the gig is the more they want to see in alignment with what they are asking for: interviews, food shots, etc. So just build the portfolio - period.

What would be better for portfolio building? Offering free videos for people in the beginning or doing a lot of personal projects creating the type of content that you want to get hired for and then putting them in your portfolio. I ask because this second route has worked for me as far as creating portfolio pieces to get hired for photography.

Thanks for this video. I'm actually so happy that I watched this video. I'm a videography, where sport/frisbee is my main subject to film. It's like my passion but when you put your best work out and I feel like it didn't make it to the top, I get very discourage. When you stated that you travel just to shoot film, I'm not sure if those were free but I travel just to shot tournaments just to get my name out there. There's a tournament next weekend that I didn't want to go to because the video that I just made didn't seem to have an impact in the ultimate community, but after watching this video, it changed my mind to go. Hopefully I will get better and get those gigs from BIG tournaments because I love to do this.

I’m Israeli, and didn’t have the intention of saying anything.. A person saying he’s from Palestine and that’s fine, but don’t share poison Henry. Saying Israel is not a legal country is just a lie, and there is tons I can share about the situation but I prefer not to. Let’s focus on free love and live in peace between the 2 nations.
