    lets say I like to shoot product videos and promotional videos for business, and Im a begginer and I dont have clients, but I did some work for myself and I know what I like and dont like, I should turn down jobs that I dont want to shoot at the begining ? or should I take whatever I can and after a while I should turn down jobs and starts make an identity to my brand and what my speciality is ?

    • @danielschiffer
      @danielschiffer  3 роки тому +530

      It will vary for every person depending on their financial situation and a variety of other factors. If you need the money to live and pay expenses, I don’t recommend turning down work, just for the sake of it. If the work is unrelated to what you want to do, you can (and maybe should) still do it on the side without incorporating it as part of your brand. For myself, I was frugal enough with money that I got to a point where I could afford to pay bills and live for a bit while turning down work I didn’t want to do. I instead spent that extra time creating spec work and putting out pieces that reflected the type of jobs I wanted to get. After doing that for a little while, it paid off tremendously as word of mouth took its course and brands started reaching out to me for product commercials. For a long time while I was trying to grow my business in marketing oriented content, I did a lot of real estate videos on the side. I never put the real estate videos on my portfolio but it was good consistent money until I had saved up enough to fully dive into what I wanted to pursue. Hope this helps!

      @danielschiffer  3 роки тому +8

      Totally! I think the expression “gear doesn’t matter” gets misunderstood. When people say that, it’s just a quicker way of saying, “you don’t need expensive, high grade equipment to make good films”. But as you said, like in any business, it’s important to invest back into it when/where necessary. Thanks for watching, and for the comment! 👏

    Tip #3 was actually the game-changer for me. Since I started to think about video production I was quite surprised how many people are already in the field and it somehow hit me to think that it's some kind of competition (exactly what you said - more work they have means less work for me). It took me a while to realize that I should change my attitude so I approached one local videomaker with offer of helping him. Turned out he would love to colaborate and tomorrow I start my first project. So thank you for saying this loud!

I made handmade Slider and start bought Canon 650D with kit lens and start filming my own car , second video i shot for tuning company and that video was my first visit card for next Commercial video for Chevrolet. After 4 year i moved to USA and started everything again.at the end , now i am working with Wheels’s company and i am professional Automotive Videographer based in LA. For immigrants to learn language , find a clients , make a videos for them and be successful it’s difficult as you know. Find your identity, thats a main key.

    I just want to thank you Daniel for the amount of advice, tips and encouragement you give us on a regular basis! I've been watching for a long time now and I was able to put the filmmaking skills into practice recently on a shoot, which is receiving a great response! Videos like this give me a lot of hope too, as I recently went freelance and look to build my own business. So yeah, thanks man 👍🙂

    Daniel, I agree with everything you said in this video. To my 50 year old self, this all seems like common sense.... but in my 20's, I didn't get it. I am so impressed with how successful you have been so early in life, and its clear that you worked really hard to get where you are. Having been forced into an abrupt career change....i've been taking a life long love for photography and expanding into video. It's fun, and rewarding....but lots of new learning....and mindsets. I find myself often looking up to you, and relying on your content to help me navigate through some very unfamiliar waters. I can't tell you how much it means to me that you choose to take extra time and share your knowledge with others.... few understand that this in and of itself is a task...one that you are an expert at as well. I don't have much to offer you in exchange for your time....but i've often felt that the best way I c an pay you back is to keep plugging away, not giving up, and work to become someone that can one day return your time investment in some meaningful way. Thank you Daniel, you are the man!!!

    I think people tend to become jacks of all trades when they try a lot of things they like, especially if those things are related business-wise.
    It takes trying a lot of different things to find what you love but I 100% agree, your work is a part of your identity.

    I've learned so much from you- and I'm not even that much into photography/videography- you provide such practical guides and they end up being applicable in many different aspects of life (like those where we need imagination, visualisation, planning, organisation and execution- basically everywhere😂)
    Thanks, Daniel!

    I can very much relate with your words, so glad I'm not alone in my struggles. And I feel this is pretty much the case for the majority of the filmmakers at the beginning of their journey. Thanks for your heartfelt tips, Daniel. It's a bumpy ride, but totally worth it.

    I like how these tips can apply to a lot of businesses and not just photography and videography. I say 'under promise and over deliver' all the time and I do custom woodworking.

    Great video. Was good of you to post in No Small creators. I have always liked your videos as i feel each one is to teach or show something. I feel that other youtubers just talk about being a UA-camr a vlogger. That's great if that is what you want to be but that don't make money or pay the bills and its really difficult to break into that. For those who want to get client work then your videos is the one to watch.
