This was played in radio stations in the early 90's. My first exposure to Rush. According to Neil it was his attempt a writing a "love song" and I think he nailed it! It's also one of the best and most satisfying transitions I've ever heard in a song!

    • @miconis123

I've always loved that it's not lovey dovey. Neil was a thinker, and no doubt felt deeply, and a natural philosopher and it shows here.

One of Alex's best solos. It was also done on the first attempt. They were like, "No need for another try or take. "

Neil wrote the lyrics. There are other examples where he shows he doesn’t believe in mystic powers; he’s more pragmatic. Check out Faithless on Snakes and Arrows album.
You guys nailed the lyrics. When he says he doesn’t believe in stars and planets, he’s not saying he doesn’t believe they exist, he’s saying he doesn’t believe they are a factor in finding your soulmate; horoscope stuff.

Not only is the chance of finding someone to love small, but the point is "and make it last." That's rarer still. Almost unrealistic to experience for most, much less expected.

They put some of the most beautiful stuff on this album, so many chord and feel changes like that one between the verse and chorus, they hit some sort of compositional stride here. Think it was maybe the 5th or 6th cd I ever bought.

Songs like this performed live were always great . They usually played songs like this to allow the concert to breath ,if that makes sense. Usually the light show accompanying it was outstanding and brought the energy together .

Fun fact, there's a mine that uses a rat for gas detection, the rat would steal food and was a pest until it was going crazy climbing up legs and running away but kept coming back. Then the gas detectors went off. The mine was evacuated. When it was clear and the miners went back in, they befriended the rat and would feed it and play with it. The rat has become a welcomed employee and even has an employee number. Don't remember what mine it was. The rat became a pet.

When Rush writes a love song 😁 True love is hard to find. So when you find it, do whatever it takes to make it last. Just don’t get hung up on the how to find it. Forget about horoscopes, fortune tellers, or dating advice. Keep your eyes and heart open and let it find you. I think that’s the message here.

The closest thing that Neil Peart wrote to a love song for his wife Jackie... Sadly, she passed away in 1998 from cancer after the tragic death of Selena Peart, her & Neil's only daughter. They performed "Ghost of a chance" live on their 2008 tour
Late 80's/ early 90's, Rush had just gone through their 80's synthesizer phase after the 1987 album 'Hold your fire'... Guitarist Alex Lifeson finally put his foot down: "Let's have a concept - No more keyboards!"
Geddy Lee and Neil Peart said, "Okay"... (Late) producer Rupert Hine came in and agreed that they needed, as a power rock trio, to rediscover their rock roots and redefine the Rush sound... Alex got his wish - more guitars, less keyboards on their 1989 album 'Presto'... Geddy Lee still provided huge melodies that made the songs like 'The Pass'... 'Scars'... so memorable. It just wasn't as heavy as their 70's albums.
In 1991, that trend continued w/ the album 'Roll the Bones' by Rush... subtle guitars... driven bass... technical drumming... very catchy songs like - 'Dreamline' ... 'Ghost of a chance' ... 'Bravado' ... and the rap-infused 'Roll the bones' track.
The heavy guitars came back in 1993 w/ the album 'Counterparts'... their engineer was Kevin Shirley, who would work with Dream Theater and Iron Maiden... He wanted an 'old school' Rush album... Alex Lifeson's guitar without flashy effects... Geddy Lee's old bass sound... minimal keyboards... and Neil Peart beating on the drums like John Bonham of Zeppelin... That worked. And 'Counterparts' also resonated in the 90's grunge rock era w/ 2 singles - 'Stick it out' ... "Nobody's hero"... but also had fan favorite songs like - 'Animate' ... 'Cut to the chase'... 'Between the Sun and Moon'... 🤘🤘🔥🔥

Hey guys! Thanks for the reaction.. I heard this song a few years ago for the first time, then it never left me because Lifeson’s guitar riffs were so beautiful, it was like he was conveying a feeling of being in love As for the marriage conversation, I am married (hence the name Castillo 😊) but only in the last 6 years. I wanted to be independent etc growing up, but saw marriage much more different from my younger self because as you get older, wisdom matures and so does your understanding of marriage. 😊. Thanks a million for reacting to this song Hollywood and Smokey! 😊😊👍👍

GREAT reaction gents! This was when I was just getting into Rush...I was 13, their compilation album Chronicles was recently released, and this album, Roll The Bones had just come out...I was instantly made a fan with what I heard! It was all so different, but all good! Fast forward to 1993, and Counterparts came out - where Rush embraced their 'grunge' side with Stick It Out (which I HIGHLY recommend you checking out! That or Animate).
This is yet another of Neil's writing genius - as with 95% of their catalogue.
Never ones to stagnate, their sound was always evolving - glad you found this piece! Always a favourite. Other's have also mentioned Losing It - where they incorporate electric violin (played by Ben Mink - one of the few times they had a 'guest' musician in their catalogue) Cheers.

There are some standout songs of theirs that are not amongst their “popular” tunes that I look at and say “ my god I am so happy they made this song.” This is one of those songs. Never was big into Rush, liked 'Spirit of Radio', jammed along with much of 'Moving Pictures' when a housemate brought it home, joined a band that played some in '05. Never heard this one before, figured it had to be from their album of covers, sounds so atypical. I'm gobsmacked, frankly, a love song by Neil? By Rush?!! Go figure. My step-sister had a guy and they were perfect together - until the ring went on, then it was a constant battle ... as soon as they divorced, everything was good again. There was something about the terms 'husband' and 'wife' that just ruined it for them. Finding your perfect someone who, grows at the same rate that you do, is just hard.

Hey guys! Lovin'your reactions to the music that has been the soundtrack to my life and times. Alex once said that the solo on this track was his favorite on the album.
Just to your point on the state or government getting involved in your relationships, Neil and his first wife Jackie (Selena's mom) were never "officially" married. They never saw the need of a piece of paper to "sanctify" their union.
Neil may have thought better about that decision when he married Carrie. There may have been legal issues after Jackie's death that arose from that situation.

Great reaction y’all! Not my fav song, but I love y’all’s reaction!! I think this is from 1991 Roll The Bones album! Neil wrote the lyrics, he was an agnostic you would say…. Y’all thought he would be a mystic in a way with all the old songs, but to listen to him over a 40 yr span,as a lyricist, you can plainly see his growth and perspective change as he gained knowledge as he grew older! (All 3 of them) Back in the 70’s he was reading Tolkien and science fiction books (he was a voracious reader) by this time in his life, he was reading Freidrich Nietzshce! He was a very smart man! (But wrong about the God part..jmo)! Anywho they were and always will be my favorite band! Be well my friends… God bless from Texas!!

Neil never really took it easy on anything. I was at a concert in Baltimore (Vapor Trails Tour) where Neil performed his famed 9-minute drum solo while Geddy and Alex took a break. Afterwards, Geddy and Alex performed an acoustic version of "Resist" while Neil took a much shorter break.

Another one of my fav Rush songs, mainly due to it being so different. Per Neil.....""I've always shied away from love songs and even mentioning the word in songs because it's so much cliché......."

Neil would be the opposite of a flat Earther. He was a big fan of science. He was agnostic when it came to religion. Neil found lasting love twice. Both marriages ended in death by cancer. Hus first wife and then himself.
From 1991's "Roll the Bones." The song hit #2 on the Album Rock charts.
Neil wrote the lyrics, and Geddy and Alex wrote the music.
A marriage gives you rights you don't otherwise have. If your partner is injured and isn't conscious, if you are married, you can make medical decisions for her. If not, you can't. There are other things that it allows that you otherwise couldn't do. I'm not married and probably never will be, but this is a concern for a long-term couple.

You guys should check out the live version of this from Atlanta from the 2007 Snakes and Arrows live album in your own time. It’s even better than this version because it’s so heavy

This could have been -- should have been -- a hit back then. Wasn't pushed nearly enough.

I have this album....a little different for Rush, I think.
I wish I could write songs like Neil Peart did!

Small point of clarification: the narrator does not state that he doesn't believe in the stars and the planets...he says he does not believe they (or angels) are watching from above. Nevertheless, your analysis that it as an argument against mysticism stands.
