Geddy would sing while playing bass, and he had a synth setup with big pedals that acted as keys he could press. The dude is a machine.

Guys - when in doubt, assume the best version is on Exit Stage Left. The same goes for La Villa - utterly blistering. I will go out on a limb to say that Alex has never matched in a live setting the finesse he achieved in those ESL recordings - especially in La Villa and Freewill. Even if there is no video available, play and react to La Villa from ESL.

I think my favorite thing about Alex is that he isn't about showing off. He gives each song exactly what it needs. But dear God does he do it well. This is one of my favorite solos. It's just so smooth and keeps building and building and then just drops back into the main melody. And Neil just murders the drums at the end. Plus he makes it look so damn simple.

Just started watching, I'm 61,grew up in a fantastic musical era starting in the 60s and up I didn't understand what Rush was about until 1977 at 14 years old, my older cousin put the album sleeve in my hands and sat me down in front of a console stereo and took me on a journey that changed my life. Rush's breakthrough album was a 20 minute side A powerhouse (2112) as a big FU to the record label. Their more breakout radio hit in The Spirit of Radio is a slam to radio stations that sold out to profits. Their biggest album has a single about Neils views of fame that would make them even more famous. This band in greatness was a walking Paradox in how they broke into popularity while being grilled by "mainstream" music press. They became outstanding muscians, songwriters and stayed most humble on the ride. This song is perhaps a one song biography of the band

I find it hilarious that so many young UA-cam musicians are discovering and reacting to RUSH songs and how blown away they are. I continually hear “next level” “virtuosos” “master musicians n song writers”.
For those under 25 Rush has been active since 1968, yah they have been crafting their trade for 53 years!!! They most definitely are next level virtuosos! The amazing thing about RUSH is that while only 3 in number they all play multiple instruments and all 3 write songs. They were “next level” when they first hit the stage and have been immortal rock Gods ever since. That so many, varied, and perfectly orchestrated performances could come one 3 man band continuously for 50 years while remaining relevant is nothing short of astonishing.
They truly are one of the greatest rock bands ever, in my opinion the best all around rock band ever! They are GOAT and deserve that honorific.
I simply cannot think of another band that had literally the level of proficiency at lead guitar, bass, and drums. Geddy easily gets honorable mention on keyboards as well. Few can question Alex Lifesons wizardry on the guitar and nobody in their right mind can question Neil Pert as greatest drummer ever.
When you combine their mastery on their instruments with some of the deepest and most complex and appealing songwriting ever and you should get the picture!
RUSH -GOAT’s trancending time and educating/motivating yet another generation of musicians just as they have for the last 50 years.
Easily the most talented and prolific rock band in history imho.
If you are a musician there are a million things you can do other than listen to RUSH but almost none of those things would help your musical ambition. Study RUSH and you will study a roadmap to success and legend!

I have had the pleasure of seeing them live. Both Alex and Geddy uses foot pedals to play a second instrument. When Geddy plays keyboards, he also plays bass with his feet. And in some songs Alex plays keyboards with his feet too. And in addition to this, Neil is playing melodic elements in addition to the drums on a pad. Its so amazing how they make music with six instruments played by three guys.

Neil Peart wasn't originally in the band. It was Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, and John Rutsey on drums. John left the band because of a combination of diabetic-related health problems, creative deficiency, and his distaste for touring. Neil cam in on their second album Fly By Night and the rest is history.

    • @RaymondBCrisp
      @RaymondBCrisp 2 роки тому +6

I wouldn't say so much creative deficiency as it was creative differences. He was more into hard rock vs Geddy and Alex's preference for progressive rock. Don't forget that Rutsey drummed on the studio version of Working Man...the song that introduced Rush to Cleveland, and eventually the whole USA! His drumming on Working Man clearly shows Rutsey had chops. Of course, we all know that the eventual introduction of Neil into the band was a turning point and ensured their lasting mark on prog rock!

And technically, Neil came in for the US tour of their first album, which of course, was the album they did with Rutsey. I also think you are both right in what you said about why they asked him to leave. They say he was into bands like Bad Company and they were more into Yes - but another major factor was that Rutsey was a Type I diabetic and had been for years and they all enjoyed the drink and diabetics just cannot sustain that lifestyle and live for very long. It was actually just the anniversary of when Neil joined the band. July 1974, and it was the eve of their first American tour. The stars were aligned (the gods weren't maligned? Lol) for them for sure. Alex and Geddy had been friends since muddle school. Why Neil was always referred to as the new guy.
Also, you kept saying David Lee Roth and I'm sure you meant Eddie Van Galen. Not sure DLR can hold a guitar let alone play one. That's mean of me to say but i said it anyway. Sorry if i offend anyone. But he is gross. Lol

Look at Jeff’s wiki. >> Jones performed with Alex Lifeson and John Rutsey in the first incarnation of Rush, serving as the primary singer and bassist in the summer of 1968. If you can find it, there’s a RUSH documentary called Beyond the Lighted Stage. It used to be on Netflix and is pretty much the history of the band. You will find that they are 3 very silly men. Their sense of humor is well known. Just one more thing that makes them so lovable. Again, another band that you need to hear all their stuff. I was a kid (teenager and younger) when I found out about them. So I’m a day one fan. In from the band’s beginning. They loved my city for this fact. We were day one fans before most others. They never forgot this and came here (San Antonio, TEXAS) for 98% of their tours. The band has stated openly that this is one of their favorite cities.
We responded by showing that they are one of our favorite bands. It was a blast every time! Stories for days guys, stories for days.
I think I already mentioned that I’ve seen them in concert 18 times.
    Epic live band!

Wish I had seen them in the '70s and '80s when I was a teen and young adult and the music was being freshly released. Alex formed a trio band back in their high school days (around 1968) and after a few gigs, he recruited his classmate, Geddy Lee, to join on bass... They recorded their first album "Rush" (1973) with John Rutsey on drums - their first album was more of a straight forward hard rock album..
After their first release, Alex and Geddy were interested in going a more creative/progressive route, which Rutsey wasn't into so much and left the band. After auditioning a few drummers, they picked Neil Peart to become the drummer in 1974.... they then released "Fly By Night" (1975) and the rest is history, so to speak....
PS - Not sure if its been mentioned here before, but Neil wrote all the lyrics for Rush, while Alex and Geddy brought in most of the musical ideas.

I'm fortunate enough to have seen them dozen times on tour and every ticket was worth every penny I ever spent and more. Outstanding choice here guys. This is an excellent example of the thing that has kept Rush fresh even now. Rush never sacrificed the art of songcraft. Meaning their songs no matter how complicated still sounded like songs. There are choruses there are verses and their shit is catchy. It's one thing to approach music like a technical exercise and another to be able to hone it into a song people can sing along with and still get in all the crazy stuff technically. By-the-by, Lee and Lifeson did grow up together, they played in club band cetera and came up together musically. Neal Peart joined their band in 1975 he was their second drummer.
