Alex Lifeson is a victim of playing the glamour instrument, and everyone having 100 'favourite guitarists' and not necessarily the same for drummers or bassists. He's absolutely overlooked and underrated.
I don't feel he was ever underrated, tbh. Overlooked I could agree with. What Alex brought was 'what should be there'. There never seems to be a guitar part missing, he put exactly what YOU expect should be there, there. That is incredible over all those years. He was so seamless with it everyone overlooks him. But there is never a guitar part missing in a Rush song. Alex put it in there already.
Fun story about the origins of Rush. This song was recorded with original drummer John Rutsy who was much more straightforward of a drummer than Neil. Nobody really had picked it up, but a female DJ from WMMS in Cleveland decided to throw it on as she needed a long song to play so she could take a bathroom break.
"Working Man" is the song that put Rush on the map, and Cleveland is the city that did it when DJ Donna Halper played it. Cleveland has always held a special spot in their hearts.
I listened to WMMS when I am at work on my phone (music app) while living in Florida. Rush did a stop in West Palm Beach, Florida during this tour. Rush jammed over 3 hours. As their appreciative thanks to Cleveland and iconic station: WMMS.
The Home of the Buzzard! I grew up on WMMS, it was basically my babysitter growing up in the 70’s. Any Cleveland people remember the Coffee Break Concerts that they played live on the air? Or how about the song Funky Poodle? I live in Florida now but miss my Hometown 🤘216🤘
@jimschwartz39 Reason for listening WMMS is their current morning show on my local radio station in West Palm. I have Iheartradio app. I went to WMMS, good music and hearing your local areas around Cleveland
Dude, three masters telling each other, “hold my beer!” No one was left to hold any one’s beer so they just rocked it and tried to out do each other. This is hands down my favorite version of this song!
I saw them twice live and it's magical❤ Fun story. I grew up in a small town outside Toronto and one day we were in the park and we heard music coming from the factories so we got up on some garbage dumpsters and watched through the window. We were watching them recording😮 They noticed us and came out talked to us about music and Alex and Geddy gave us guitar picks and Neil gave us drumsticks. Great guys really humble❤ That was in 1982 I was 12 I'm now 53😂
Cleveland holds a special place in their hearts, as that was where they first got radio airplay, with Working Man. A local DJ called Donna Halper played it on her show back in 1974 and it became an instant favourite with her listeners.
It's crazy to think that the boys were like 58-59 years old at this time. And they STILL kept going for another half decade after this. It's crazy to think that rock n roll had only been around for 20-25 years when this song came out in '74. According to band lore, working class Cleveland is where the band got their first big break, with this very song, on WMMS 100.7 FM. A 7 minute "bathroom break" song that gave the DJ enough time to answer nature's call. Thank you Cleveland!!!
This was at the end of a three hour show. Three guys in their late 50's showing you how it is done! The reggae at the beginning was a change up of a song that they have been performing since 1974. No, they are no longer touring. They retired in 2015 as Neil wanted to be with his new family and he was also feeling the fatigue of drumming for that many years. Geddy Lee once said that there is no Rush without all three of them. The last part of the song was Cygnus Book 1 Cheers 🇨🇦
There is a video of Chad Smith, Danny Carey and Dave Grohl each playing the drums for Rush. One song either Xanadu or yyz live after the passing of Neil. Each plays a snippet of the song. Dave starts with Chad second and Danny ending the song.
It's been said that if Geddy Lee played with more than one finger we'd all be dead. Also, he is actually surpsingly soft spoken off stage Also, that riff at the very end is the opening of Cygnus X1. I'd recommend it for your next Rush reaction Yall are ready...
Great review guys keep up the good work. Below is a little background information that you might find interesting: Rush as a band was always evolving always trying new things, and in my opinion where always always ahead of their time. A few years ago i watched a documentary on them (there are several now but this was an early one), where they talked about the evolution of their music. There first two albums were moderately successful. Nothing earth shattering but enough to get them booked as opening acts for larger bands (Kiss, Aerosmith and a few others) throught the middle 70's. Their 3rd album Caress of Steel (which hard core RUSH fans will tell you was great) was a commerical flop. Their record company was threatening to drop them, which in 1976 would have end of the band. They were given a chance to do one more album if it didnt sell they would be dropped and that would most likely be the end of RUSH. Now I think most people in that situation would write few catchy radio friendly songs just to try to try to keep their contract. RUSH did the opposite. The three of them decided, 'Screw it we are going to make the music we want to make no matter what anyone else says." And the world got 2112 the most prog non radio friendly album. But it was their biggest hit to date going 3x platinum, from that point on they were never threatend again and were allowed to make the music they wanted to make. As you know they were all highly skilled musicians who enjoyed various types of music and began working those different genres into their music along with the time shifts they were already famous for. You have covered a lot of their classics but some of their later music you might enjoy too I would recommend Roll The Bones (this one i think you will really like as their is a suprise about 2/3 of the way through the song that comes out of left field that i think you will both find very interesting) Bravado Nobody's Hero (this was a personal song for Neil) Marathon Middleton Dreams Headlong Flight (recently Geddy was asked hypothetically if you could be back on stage again with Alex and Neil and get to play one song which would it be, this was his choice) LIve Recommendations Xandu (Exit Stage Left Tour) Spirit of Radio (live in Toronto 1984)
Danny Carey played YYZ on stage with Geddy and Alex recently, and Alex hopped on stage with Tool at one of their concerts a few months ago. I'm hoping it will be Danny, Alex and Geddy making a new album under a new band name.
You guys have got to check out the live version of Bytor and the Snow Dog that is on Rush's first double live album...All the World's a Stage. You won't find any actually filmed live version, just the audio only with album cover art still frame version. I would say that it is Rush at their most extreme...not holding anything back, and just doing everything they want to do. The boys do a much extended and very psychedelic solo on the track that was never recorded anywhere else that I am aware of...you really have to hear it to believe it. Not for nothing, the other track on that side of the double live album is In the End...and that version is really freaking incredible and worth reacting to.
That was the last song from their Time Machine tour DVD, which was recorded in Cleveland OH in April 2011. The folks would all be in their late 50s. If you look at the DVD, it says length of is just under 2.5hrs, but having been to their London gig in May, I can attest that the gig easily ran to for 3hrs. Monster stamina!!
Although there will never be anyone capable of filling Neil's shoes, Dave Grohl is the 1st one to come to mind to sit in for NP, but he stated "‘I’m not physically or musically capable, but thanks for the offer.’ ". Two others would be Mike Portnoy, and (for obvious reasons), Danny Carey. Stewart Copeland is another that springs to mind. Just remember what Stewart Copeland said, amidst all the drummers who were invited to Neil's funeral..."We are all our 2nd favorite drummer".
This is the song that started the RUSH story to be world wide phenomenon. Neil hadn't joined the band yet when this was released. John Rutsey is the drummer everybody heard when radio stations started playing the song back in the old days! 😂
There has been some talk abut Neil's daughter, Olivia Peart, playing drums for RUSH. There is an interview with Geddy floating around out there where he speaks of it. I would love to see RUSH become a generational band.
@11:11 Goosebumps to this Cleveland boy. Growing up in the 1970s as a teen in this town, we loved our WMMS 101 FM. "The Buzzard" since those early days. Cleveland with MMS, and Belkin Bothers Productions, The Agora, and us locals were instrumental, in this band, among others, with Breaking into an Audience. We Loved our ROCK & Roll and still do. We are ashamed of the dream we had for the Rock Hall. So sad that the greats we wanted enshrined are still outside the gates. This Genre was the Target for the concept we began on WMMS. Rush Was Rock and still is rock. Add an Adjective if you need, It's still Rock.
Awesome!!!!! Thanks for that You need to check out Bytor and the snow dog lyric video, it's Neil's first album with them and one of the first tunes they wrote together, we knew they were going in a different direction IMMEDIATELY after hearing this, check it out!!
I've been a Rush fan ever since someone gave me a copy of their first album- Fly By Night- when it first came out. I've been a Rush freak ever since. I even named one of my sons Neil Alexander after Neil Peart and Alex Lifeson. I've only seen Rush live twice- the Subdivisions tour, and the Snakes And Arrows tour. Both shows were about 3 hours, with no opening acts. Both shows were fantastic, and they jammed this hard on almost everything. I'm so glad you guys have covered so much of their stuff.
Rush didn't tour since the passing of Neil Peart. As a drummer that could play a Rush show, the only one I know is Mike Portnoy (from Dream Theater). I'm sure there are other greats, but Portnoy... damn !
My favorite live version of a song by Rush is YYZ from the clockwork angels tour. The Rush in Rio live version of YYZ is incredible (that's the version where the crowd sings along to the song despite the song having no lyrics) but the Clockwork Angels version includes a small orchestral string section, as that album included many songs that had those instruments present. I like YYZ, but I love YYZ with some violins and instruments added into the mix.
Nobody can replace "The Professor" imo, I have a lot of respect for drummers over all.. any musician in the public eye. Damn, there is NOTHING I could do to draw this kind of crowd, much less have them pay me big money for it!!! Real talk!
No one could really fill his spot in the band, but Mike Portnoy from Dream Theater would have the chops to do it justice. Being from another Prog Rock group he knows the genre.
I give credit to this song for keeping me half sane for the god-awful 3 1/2 years in Hawaii. NOT an 808 fan. A band that played at a nearby bar/nightclub would play this and nail it. Giving me a reason to live. When they saw me roll in, they knew they were going to be "Working Men". RIP Neil.😇
The Band stopped touring in 2015 because Neil wanted to be with his young daughter. A cuople of years later he got daignosed with cancer and then passed away in 2020. The band has not toured or made any music since then, but Geddy and Ale has played some songs for special occasions like the Taylor Hawkins tribute. I think Dave Grohl, Chad Smith and Danny Carey played drums with them. Chad Smith did working man and Danny did YYZ. Check them out. As a big Rush fan and a Tool fan, it would be fantastic if Danny Carey did something with them.
I love it when you guys do Rush. I really hope you decide to do Cygnas X1 book I and Book II: Hemispheres. Awesome tunes. You'll love 'em. Do the album versions. Another cool story.
great reaction, this rush song in particular makes you come back over and to listen you'll see, just for yourself. that its a great stress reliever lol. 'long live Rush forever'
Ya these guys are real .... Geddy ,Alex & Neil lived a couple miles from me as a kid ... Alexs son was in my primary school class a few years you could randomly encounter them around town doing their shopping 😁 no one could fill Neils spot ...he did most of the writing
Live in Cleveland is special because Cleveland is the city where Rush first got radio play in the USA. People heard it and called the station wondering if it was a new Led Zeppelin song.
I still can't believe sometimes it's only three guys, three! That was amazing, Rush is one of those bands I never did get to see live so these kinds of videos are so incredibly satisfying🤘🖤😎 Love Scrabble!! As a kid i liked Life... I somehow always ended up with multiple sets of twins LOL
Cleveland was a very significant part of Rush , A female disc Jockey, was the first to play their single Working man in the United States ,On the radio it really pushed their career
I live in Cleveland and I was at this concert. I saw the band many times over the years, and they always put on an amazing performance. And this night was no different. On this tour, they were performing the album Moving Pictures in it’s entirety.
this ending i saw in Seattle they turn everyone up it blew my eardrums out couldn't hear till the next day i lost some of the hairs that capture sound .....it was worth it... good bye to my favorite band ...rush
As previously mentioned, that last bit was the introduction to Cygnus X-1, a masterpiece so eipc that it spans two albums; Book 1 is the closing track on A Farewell To Kings, and Book 2 is the 6 part side-long opening track on Hemispheres, adding up to 30 amazing minutes guaranteed to blow your minds, so be sure to listen to it!! Cheers from Toronto! 🎤 🎸 🥁 🎸 🔥 🔥 🔥
Black Histiory month called They wantTrash Talkers to put on some bellbottoms, platform shoes, polyester and check Curtis Mayfield- Superfly (73) 🔥 Tittle track from the groundbreaking soundtrack 💯 banger 🔥
Hello from Ontario, Canada! I've enjoyed your reaction videos to RUSH songs (yeah, one of the greatest bands of all time)! As someone mentioned here earlier, you should also check out the tribute to Taylor Hawkins, who I've learned was a huge fan of RUSH. This tribute has Dave G. on drums for some 2112, Chad S. for Working Man, and Danny C. for some YYZ (all well-done)! I'm sure you guys will enjoy this also! Have you seen "the Spirit of Radio" (live from Toronto); that's another good one!
Geddy and Alex basically agreed that (sic) "there is no Rush without Neil". After his passing, Geddy and Alex, who are best friends, did not play at all together for almost 2 years. They finally played some Rush songs together with Danny Carey, Dave Grohl, and Chad Smith at the Taylor Hawkins Tribute Concert in 2022.
I was so crushed when Neil died. I brought up his passing to my brother/law, who is a music major. And I had to remind him who Neil Peart was! What do they teach music majors, if they don’t mention Neil Peart?! He should be a semester, MINIMUM!
GREAT reaction gents!! Three incredible guys, Alex & Geddy at 57, Neil at 58 - so not young - absolutely KILLING it - and this is the final encore after a nearly 3 hour concert! Rush got better as they got older! Saw this and every tour since '97, and each time was setting a new bar in performance! (Slight exception on the R40 tour in 2015 - Geddy's voice was finally showing it's age - with some songs...but their musicianship never declined!) It has be categorically said by Alex & Geddy - without Neil, there is NO Rush! And I agree. Cheers!
Having just finished My Effin Life by Geddy Lee ,it’s pretty stated Rush as a band is finished . That said ,Geddy didn’t say he and Alex wouldn’t ever perform live again. The implication by Geddy is that it would look something like “ an evening of Rush songs with Geddy and Alex with guest drummer or drummers ,so and so.” Unfortunately,Geddy got put off by some drummers contacting them with Peart barely gone for two months begging to jam with them. I would give Geddy and Alex another year or so and we might see something put together .
There are bands out there where it's just fine to sit at home and enjoy their album. Rush is not one of these bands I had an amazing experience every time I saw them live. R.I.P. Neil! I have not heard of another drummer that can compete with Neil.
I love this live performance! I suggest checking out the live version of 'Caravan' from the Time Machine tour in 2011. It is a face-melter all the way through!
Fav board game-is pictinary one? Haha! I liked trouble and apples to apples too! This isn't a board game but cards against humanity+ a few drinks is hilarious!
Just 3 gentlemen in their late 50's casually finishing up a 3 hour show .. 🤯
#AmazeBallz !!
Rush, the greatest 3 piece rock band in history, no debate, over.
Total concurrence...
I like me some Brownsville Station
I love them, but there could be a fun debate
Agree 💯.
The 3 piece qualifier isn't necessary.
Alex Lifeson is a victim of playing the glamour instrument, and everyone having 100 'favourite guitarists' and not necessarily the same for drummers or bassists. He's absolutely overlooked and underrated.
I saw someone comment that Rush is a very sturdy tripod with no weak leg....
Yes, you are so right. Alex is definitely underrated to the point that it's a crime.
This was the encore, after a 3 hour concert, and they are all in their 50's here.
58 yrs old an ending a 3 hr set with this encore…
Simply the best 3 piece band ever
8:46 When Geddy and Alex are face to face, (guitar to guitar), jamming the F out is one of the most incredible jam sessions caught on film!!!
They probably looked just like that as kids jamming out in the basement, “Can’t stop thinking big”!
Tons of people started calling in thinking Zeppelin had dropped new music

I’m experiencing Rush for the first time also. Thanks 👍🏽
Oh wow! You're in for a real treat! Look up their reaction to Xanadu. Another incredible performance by these gents. Enjoy the ride!!!
Best band ever in concert, they never disappointed, and greatest power trio in Rock history all three exceptional talents. 😊
I saw them in Louisville the night before this was recorded. It was epic.
I saw them twice live and it's magical❤ Fun story. Great guys really humble❤ That was in 1982 I was 12 I'm now 53😂

That's how men pushing 60 can rock!!!! Rush fan forever.
Cleveland holds a special place in their hearts, as that was where they first got radio airplay, with Working Man. A local DJ called Donna Halper played it on her show back in 1974 and it became an instant favourite with her listeners.
I should be sending her a Christmas card every year.

Dave starts with Chad second and Danny ending the song.
Epic is the best description of Rush! I love their talent, their music, and the fact that their friendship lasted decades.
Big love to you boys… now, still looking for your reaction to The Garden.
Rave on!
It's been said that if Geddy Lee played with more than one finger we'd all be dead. Also, he is actually surpsingly soft spoken off stage
Also, that riff at the very end is the opening of Cygnus X1. I'd recommend it for your next Rush reaction Yall are ready...

Bravado
Nobody's Hero (this was a personal song for Neil)

Great reaction
Great review on the greatest band ever that I was fortunate enough to have seen 47 times from 1977 to 2015
You guys are the truth! Respect!
Danny Carey does YYZ with Geddy and Alex for a Taylor Hawkins tribute show. Check it out.
This is one of the greatest live performances ever in my opinion. Alex is on a different level.🔥
Danny Carey played YYZ on stage with Geddy and Alex recently, and Alex hopped on stage with Tool at one of their concerts a few months ago. I'm hoping it will be Danny, Alex and Geddy making a new album under a new band name.

The opening had a reggae sound to me. Glad you played the game smokey. I'll be sure to get an anti patriots gift next time lol.
@11:11 Goosebumps to this Cleveland boy. Growing up in the 1970s as a teen in this town, we loved our WMMS 101 FM.

Sure needed this❤thanks guys😢lost my momma few hours ago.😢so grateful to have seen Rush play this live in 97. Laser light tour test for Echo.
My favorite board game? Trouble is a good variation on the classic parcheesi, Sorry! as well. Big fan of backgammon also.
Trivial Persuit!
Mornin guys! Wow! They still rockin it!!! What an awesome performance!!! Love the live versions of the bands for sure!🤓💯
Awesome!!!!! Thanks for that
You need to check out Bytor and the snow dog lyric video, it's Neil's first album with them and one of the first tunes they wrote together, we knew they were going in a different direction IMMEDIATELY after hearing this, check it out!!

Absolutely incredible musicians…
This was the last song of the night. How crazy to have that much energy after playing all of their other hits. Amazing talent!
Great reaction to a great band! To answer your question, Mike Mangini recently released from Dream Theater. Incredible drummer, polyrhythmic prowess.
Live Rush is the BEST Rush. All my favorite Rush songs are live versions
Rush didn't tour since the passing of Neil Peart.
As a drummer that could play a Rush show, the only one I know is Mike Portnoy (from Dream Theater). I'm sure there are other greats, but Portnoy... damn !
Its about time guys!
Killer Reaction...My Favorite Band....Love You Guys....Lets Get Stoned Together and Jam Out !!
Listen to "the trees" next by rush!! Great song! So true!
One of my faves as well.

He also probably already knows every song, check out a Rush cover band he was in “Cygnus and the Sea Monsters”
These guys were Always Amazing live!! I got to see them 3x and it was worth every penny!!!
RIP Neil.😇
Dinner with Rush is an awesome watch. Dinner with Rush.
- RUSH at any age: "Hold my beer..." ! :D

When three of the best bass guitar, lead guitar and drummers come together you get RuSH
Saw them 5 times throughout my life and they never disappointed. Thanks for the reaction!
Bluesy, reggae intro. Love it.
If you haven't checked out their last album you really need to. B2BU, headlong flight, caravan. All incredible bangers!!!
Alexs son was in my primary school class a few years
you could randomly encounter them around town doing their shopping 😁
no one could fill Neils spot ...he did most of the writing
Live in Cleveland is special because Cleveland is the city where Rush first got radio play in the USA. People heard it and called the station wondering if it was a new Led Zeppelin song.
I still can't believe sometimes it's only three guys, three! That was amazing, Rush is one of those bands I never did get to see live so these kinds of videos are so incredibly satisfying🤘🖤😎
Love Scrabble!!
Hence the name, Working Man!!
I really miss these guys!🥺
I've seen rush six times in my life
Every time they blew my mind
And the last toll was write a beyond belief
Happy to be able to say I saw Rush on their Counterparts tour…..amazing musicianship!
Noone could ever fill Neil's shoes.... PERIOD!
Killed it.
My favorite version of this song.
Black Histiory month called

Tittle track from the groundbreaking soundtrack
💯 banger 🔥
I've been to my share of concerts in my 51 years, the times I saw Rush in concert (six) are by far the most enjoyable and impressive
Zac Starkey could do it. He plays with The WHO now and sounded great on the QUADROPHENIA TOUR.
Many thanks brothers!
Yep! nice for 58 or so years old!! now closing in on 70 or so!!
The drummer that comes to mind 1st would be Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy who also happened to play in a RUSH tribute band. I have the dvd.
(Slight exception on the R40 tour in 2015 - Geddy's voice was finally showing it's age - with some songs...but their musicianship never declined!)
It has be categorically said by Alex & Geddy - without Neil, there is NO Rush! And I agree.
Cheers!
I had the great fortune to see this tour. Rush freaking RULES!
Xanadu live in Montreal is the greatest live performance ever.
LONG LIVE RUSH ❤
RUSH = 3 hard working men each giving 110%
So glad that you see this song live. Working man usually ends the show. They were great live.
Great reaction fellas 👍👍👍
What a performance
Fucking incredible band
Need to watch "Working Man" from 2015 "the Forum" their last concert. I get emotional every time I watch it.
Smokey that shirt is THE SHIT!
There are bands out there where it's just fine to sit at home and enjoy their album. Rush is not one of these bands
I had an amazing experience every time I saw them live.
Card game- rummi!!
Nobody will replace neil.he was the best r.i.p.
That's why they are the HOLY TRINITY
I was at this concert. So good
Possibly the best 3 piece band ever
