I love you! Watching this and £5.45 later and I can have a driveable van again by Wednesday night where I don’t have to fight the thing into gear at every junction. Thanks so much. 🙏
I just completed the job. Mine initially seemed impossible to get on. I shaved a small bit of the plastic back on the inside lip to get it started, used lots of grease and still needed to lever it on with a large crowbar. Lovely now it's on.
@@JoelsStuff Just had to replace the same bush on my 2002 T4. Despite copious amounts of silicone grease and warming bush in hot water, I was still not able to get it onto the shaft. Ended up having to ream out the centre of the new bush (from JustKampers) with a 10mm drill before eventually succeeding. Admittedly doing this in situ, so little space for good leverage. Will leave the other end until I have more time to remove complete assembly and do on bench. Cheers for the Vid.
A bit more sticky grease would certainly help between the top and bottom of that ball housing. Interesting, your short nose T4 is slightly different from the long nose model (you have the square headlights).
Cheers. I just watched out of curiosity. I've had my T4 16 years and have changed all the gearshift bushings a couple of times. Mind, I have done 300,000 klms in it. There's not many common T4 issues I haven't had to deal with. Having lived in it for 7 out of the 16 years, I do love my T4, but they're costly to keep on the road.
They shouldn't have grease on them. A tip for when the left hand side go's you are stuck in third gear, push the shaft through and put a pair of vise grips on it until you fix it. Make sure you put it in reverse before doing the job the gearbox and the gear lever otherwise you won't have reverse when finished.
John - Could you explain which job you mean in "put it in reverse before doing the job"? I am guessing you mean replacing the left / offside bush? ... or have I misundestood?
@Richard-tf5cf yes that's right the left off side bush. You have to put it in reverse on top of the gearbox by hand, then put the gear lever in the reverse position aswell when doing the job otherwise you won't get reverse when finished. I don't know why that is but it is, so i found out the first time i did it..
Hi mare I’ve got this same issue with mine. Once it happened I had trouble going into 5th gear and also reverse, when I put new bushes in will it fix that problem?
@@JoelsStuff Yeah, great videos. I'm just getting my T4 kitted out as a day van on the cheap and I've found your experience valuable :) Be good to see some more
VW T4 I just gave it a good push with my fingers, it took about 30 seconds or so. It’s hard plastic. Have you put some silicone grease inside to help slide it on? You might just have a tighter fit than I did
After not being able to unscrew the hex holding plate that holds the small bushing I also decided to go lazy and only change the larger ball. Actually I came here seeking advice on how the heck should I slide the new ball into its place. Did you only used your fingers?
Joel's Stuff mines a lot looser than yours can’t find first gear 😢 Glad it’s a fix that can be done without a ramp. I.e taking it to a garage. My garage charges £44 per hour for labour

Good luck! 🤗

I remember reading up before I did this that it was hard to get on, but I think I got lucky with mine. Good job!

Ewow, I have suffered this for ages. I did not know it could be done like this. Thank you 🙏 very much

Well done, and a great very instructive video
Thank you mate!you save my day😊

I don’t know but It’s certainly a good place to start. Good luck!
You made that look to easy, I had to drill the hole bigger.. nightmare 🇬🇧
I've been contemplating doing mine. I didn't realise it was that simple and will make a big difference, thanks!
The side I did is super easy. I think changing the other one is a bit more tricky

Did you use any tools to push the bush on, I am trying to do mine and cannot get it on the metal rod, the bush that you bought was it soft plastic.
VW T4

Yes and a little grease
Did you manage it in the end? We’re having the same problem lol
Thanks mate. Mine went today. You’ve saved me a few quid on garage cost.
P.s How long did it really take to get the bushing on....? 😉
From what I remember only a few minutes!

Perfect, thank you very much!
Very good, Thanks for the video. :-)
Where did you get the part?
I got this from ebay for about £5.
Sky Doherty rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F191250091907
U have to try to boil the ball before putting it there
Thank you! Guessing part number for that bushing is 015311544?
I don’t remember now 🤔
