Fixing the Moto Guzzi V85TT rear shock squeak issue

  • Squeak, piggy, squeak. After only around 3000 miles, my bike developed "the squeak". A not uncommon problem on the V85TT sadly. Luckily it's an easy fix if you've got a few simple tools and half an hour to spare.
    Although it's a simple process, I thought some people might find it useful to see how I fixed it on my bike.
    Disclaimer: I am not a mechanic, this is just how I did it!
    As there's not much room in the Fat Cave (tm) I had to clear a space in the Shed of Dreams (tm) in order to be able to film and spanner at the same time.

    Mine has just done 20k miles and I noticed a rear squeak so will follow your instruction, excellent video

      On you or on the bike ;-) 20k is good - maybe they waved the grease-pot near your bike when it was being built! Cheers.

    Finally got around to checking mine. Bloody glad I did! The rear bushing was caked in rust and seized solid. Make sure you check yours before you trash the shock

    • @MultiVogon
      @MultiVogon  2 роки тому

      Yeah, they're really not fit for purpose are they? I think if you live somewhere where it is in any way shape or form damp, it needs to be an annual job to re-grease it to prevent it rusting up and wearing out...

    Just wanted to say thanks for taking the time to make this video. Fixed my squeaky shock today. Don’t have a centre stand, or a jack… but with an extra pair of hands, it was straightforward enough. 👍🏻

      Hey, cheers - glad it was useful 🙂 Hopefully 'the squeak' won't be back any time soon (my bike is still squeak free at the moment...!)

    You can do all that if you are feeling really bored or you can just squirt a tiny bit of ACF 50 in both ends of the shock when you buy the bike on day one.

    • @MultiVogon
      @MultiVogon  2 місяці тому

      ACF50 is great but it's not proper grease on its own. I agree though, definitely a job for day 1 given the lack of effort put in by Moto Guzzi for preparing the bike for an European winter! Cheers.

    Thanks for the very useful step through this job. the jack under the swing arm tip makes it an easy job. As its a rainy Sunday I decided to do this job today, before the squeak developed (just 1100 Km up on my recently purchased and registered 2020 model). Evidence of small amounts of grease at either end and caught in time that no cleaning of crud needed.

      Awesome - sounds like it was worth doing it early to prevent the inevitable. Glad the vid was useful to someone :-)

    Brilliant reference to Love Shack. You’ve made my morning 🤣 good job by the way. It’s a good point you make about applying grease affecting the torque. I once went on a training course at work with a torque wrench manufacturer and they demonstrated the effect of that. Another tip I picked up from the course was that one click is enough. If you keep clicking it can over torque. This was also demonstrated.

    • @MultiVogon
      @MultiVogon  3 роки тому +1

      Someone got the reference, yay! Yeah to be fair I cut out a load of waffling about torque specs & what not. Partly because it would have doubled the length of the video, and partly because I was bound to get something wrong. I take your point on the clicks - when it's a fine thread / low torque fastener, I would definitely exercise more mechanical feel.

    A jack to support the swing arm. Absolutely obvious - in retrospect. Thanks for that.

    Perfect video, thank you so much for taking the time! Seeing it done gives all the confidence in the world. Easy job, like most Guzzi maintenance!

      Hi, thanks, glad it was useful. Once of the reasons I went to Guzzi was to get back to a simpler type of bike with easier maintenance. (I realise not EVERYTHING is easy on a guzzi though :-D )

    Good (and funny) video, thx. I am used to add some grease on all screws except those where screw lock is needed

    Just did this on my 2021 model, looks like Mario and Luigi found the grease jar. There was a little grease in the bearing. Not a lot mind you but grease none the less. Now has lots of grease. Tech tip, found beer better than tea.....😀

    • @MultiVogon
      @MultiVogon  3 роки тому +2

      Yeah to be fair there was evidence of 'some' grease in the lower mount... Shame they didn't improve it on the 2021 model. I found out the hard way that beer before spannering often leads to tears 🤣

    Good video, I have to do this on my bike asap. Is loctite for the top bolt not more logical than grease?

    • @flat6fever680
      @flat6fever680 Місяць тому +2

      Yes for sure medium Loctite made by Honda and found at most good Honda shops. Order a small bottle if they don't have it. Medium grade loctite prevents seizing / corrosion, and I use a dab on all bolt threads. As for the question of grease: he was referring to the shaft of the bolt as it is carrying the weight of the bike in that bushing. A light film of grease on the shaft would be good of course but none on the threads.

    when you use torque wrench, only once to click and do not re tighten to next click.
    stay safe mate

      cheers, yes someone else had pointed it out too. I do know that, but sometimes on large bolts I can't help but give one for luck ;-)

    I heard squeaks at 2700 miles. I sprayed WD-40 then lithium grease which stopped the noise. No squeaks yet (500 miles) if it starts again I'll do what you did.

    • @MultiVogon
      @MultiVogon  3 роки тому +2

      You can't beat fixing it properly, but if all you've got to hand is a spray then that'll help temporarily. I prefer GT85 to WD40 - smells much nicer ;-)

    • @ichzuhause8204
      @ichzuhause8204 2 роки тому +1

      WD 40 is NOT a lubrcation. Use grease. I recomment an Lithium or copper complex grease.

    • @petertspock
      @petertspock 2 роки тому +3

      @@ichzuhause8204 As stated I did use lithium grease after first using WD-40 ( WD stands for water displacement) . I waited a few hours after the WD-40 before spraying the grease. No squeaks yet at 7800 miles.

  • @mattguzzim1744
    @mattguzzim1744 3 роки тому +1

    Yep. Got the squeek at about the same mileage. Squirted it up and down with WD40. All gone.

    • @MultiVogon

      Be careful, as you don't want to blast away what little grease might still be in there!

      @@MultiVogon I backed out the bolts a little and sprayed with synthetic chain lube then tightened everything back up . The chain lube foams and works its way in then it solidifies and turns into a light sticky grease.

    • @MultiVogon
      @MultiVogon  3 роки тому +2

      @@randyspeagle8114 That sounds like a good idea. Plus, I have no use for my cans of chain lube now ;-). Traditional spray grease would work similarly I would think. 👍

    You should put in grease everywhere after buying. Handlevers, Foodlevers, axles, …
    Like many manufactures also Moto Guzzi is saving money by „avoid“ greasing.
    Do hesitat to prevent the rust. If it is rusty it is too late.

    • @MultiVogon
      @MultiVogon  2 роки тому

      good advice, although you'd like to think that a new bike wouldn't need to be stripped down to do this right away. The bike was a few months old when I got it, and there were already a few bolts starting to rust.. Still love it though !
