This helped me to install my sat nav on my V85t. I bought some normal sockets as well as the pre wired sockets, I stripped the wires and joined the Tom Tom wires to the larger wires and crimped the connections on the socket. It worked perfectly.
Very helpful. Thank you. I’ve just bought a new Travel and am making the various modifications necessary. I’ve already ordered the same satnav support from Gimpo- promised next week. I have a Garmin Zumo XT so will be fitting that and was already thinking that picking up on the existing supply to the USB port looked the best option. You’ve confirmed it 👍 Simple little job. Thanks again.
Hi, glad it was useful. I've not had any issues since taking the power from there. I also like the fact I can just unplug it and return everything back to standard. Enjoy your new bike :-) Cheers!
Great video, thank you. Has given me confidence to do the same. FYI my MG dealer advised that this is the correct procedure with no mention of warranty issues, so happy days. Good road MV, you've earned that cuppa!
Don't you find the ash blows all over the place when you're riding along?? :-D I put the controller for my Innov camera system in that blank spot. I think it's where a flashy LED is meant to go if you opt for the factory alarm system. Not sure if there's enough room behind for the depth of a cig lighter socket though - would definitely have to check carefully first.
Thanks so much for this video! It saved me a whole lot of time figuring this out. Although I didn't have the fancy connectors and just used bullet splices it worked great for my BMW Nav VI, so I didn't have to spend the money on a new nav unit for the Guzzi.
Hey, glad to hear it was useful! It is a much neater way to do the wiring I think, than running the power forward from the battery somewhere. I don't think I'd use it for something that draws a lot of power (like heated grips), but for electronic devices it seems perfectly fine so far. 👍
@@MultiVogon Exactly. It powers the nav and phone charger no problem. Also I appreciate your clean and organized work space, quality tools, and methodical work process.
Nice to explore the bike this way. Maybe you can explain in a following topic how the foglights are connected with the onboard foglight switch. Like to install the give ones but do not like an new and extra switch.
As I have the travel model, the fog lights came pre-installed, so I've no idea how they fit, I'm afraid. Do bikes without the fog lights still have the 3-position light switch? (in the UK the positions are: 1) LED wing-thing, 2) Dipped Beam, 3) Dipped beam plus fog lights. ) As the lights are available from Moto Guzzi separately, they surely must be plug-and -play? So it's a case of finding out where the connector is hiding. I bet the fitting instructions are available on the internet somewhere.. 🤔
@@MultiVogonThe new (2023 at least) Travel unfortunately doesn't include them. I'm currently looking into how to wire them up on my bike, as I'd like to go with an aftermarket option (SW-motech evo high beams) so that I can use them as projector beams on the highway. Seems like it's probably a 3-pin connector like the one you had here, using a signal, power, and ground into a relay which gives power to the lights when the switch is on and probably turns them off when the high beams are on.
Hi, neatness really - not having to run a cable under the tank to the front of the bike. Also keeps the socket under the seat free for future things - in fact I've just fitted an INNOV camera system and used the underseat connector for that (might make a video on that if people are interested).

The main alarm plugs in elsewhere on the bike but I guess the wiring harness is set up for all possible options.

Hi, you absolutely can just plug it into the USB socket of course. I have done that in the past on a previous bike. The reason I wanted to hard wire it was for neatness - so there's no cables dangling around. Also it leaves the USB socket free if I need to, e.g. charge my phone in the tank bag. Finally, the USB socket is NOT waterproof when there's a cable plugged in. As I live in Wales, this means there's only 3 days a year when I can actually use it... (only joking... but it does rain a lot here!). Over there in sunny Sussex where I assume you get 300 days of sun a year, you should be fine! :-) I really like the Gimpo Garage bracket I have on my bike, but there are quite a few other options available too nowadays. Quick question on this method: AFAIk the USB connector is rated for 1 A, will it be enough to, let's say, power your satnav and charge a phone or battery pack?
Hello, I have relatives in the Netherlands (somewhere!). Fair point about the power - I did think about it afterwards. Digging about it seems the USB socket itself is indeed 1A. The 'usb sockets' on the wiring diagram are both connected to a 7.5A fuse. The wiring to the back of the USB socket is far beefier than the wiring to my TomTom, but I haven't been able to find out the current draw. All things being said, given that the USB will (presumably) limit whatever is plugged in to a maximum of 1A, then the bike wiring itself should be more than adequate for something else low power like a satnav. I started making some notes to think about another video but I don't have all the info yet. I am happy that what I've done is ok for my situation. If you really wanted to run something power hungry or lots of devices there are those power distribution things that look good (can't remember any brands offhand but you wire them to the battery and they provide various power outlets for multiple devices etc). The bracket is good - send gimpo a message and they'll let you know when they come back into stock 👍
USB output is 5V but behind any USB port has to be a transformer to convert it from the input - in this case 12V DC. Correct, most satnavs run on 5V and (as is the case with a Garmin Zumo ) may have a mini or micro USB female socket AND a separate waterproof connection built into the mount. It is far better to use this obviously. The transformer is built into the lead which you connect to a 12V supply (as in this video) or direct to the battery. Hope that helps.
