  • In the last year, I meticulously disassembled, cleaned, and diagnosed the classic BMW R60/5 airhead engine from a 1970s motorcycle, embarking on a journey to restore it to its former brilliance.
    Throughout the process, I repaired numerous internal components, ensuring their optimal condition for seamless reassembly.
    Given the odometer reading of well over 90'000 miles on the original engine, an extensive rebuild became a necessity to revive this vintage masterpiece.
    Join me in the fascinating restoration of this iconic motorcycle, where every part tells a story of its enduring legacy on the road.

    As a retired Dealership Harley-Davidson mechanic (not a damn technician) with over 55 years of service and repair under my belt it is wonderful to see young people doing work with the attention to detail as I have seen you preform on this engine. Nicely done. I wish there were more young people such as yourself in the shops in my years. With work ethic such as yours I know you enjoy doing it for year to come. I hope only the very best for you. God bless, Most Sincerely, Pops

      I love doing my absolute best, every time and i take pride in learning from the elderly (or youngsters) who is proud, quality minded mechanics that do their best eeeeevery time doing engine work.
      It is the absolute best feeling, to deliver a piece of work, that you just know, wil last a very long time and perform the same or even better than a new engine if taken care of proper.

    • @WorkshopRebuild
      @WorkshopRebuild  4 місяці тому +3

      Many parts needed to be replaced after 50years of use, and that’s why many parts look new. Major components were refurbished/repaired in order to be able to reuse them for this engine build.
      I will have a few more videos about this engine where you will see what exactly went into this engine.

    Double row timing chain with a master link is so vintage German style.

    • @WorkshopRebuild

      The engine models from the late 60’s featured timing gears and just a few years after this engine, they went away from a double row timing chain and installed a single row timing chain.

    Well done, Andreas, I like your attention to detail, from, “what looks the vapor blasting of each piece”, and finished with what I am guessing is a Cerakote, to your “special” assembly tools, the initial assembly lubrication and temporary plugs, all these are signs of a good artisan.
    Given the age of the motor, I am amazed at the perfect condition of the thread on the aluminum head exhaust port.
    My 2c, as a firm believer in “copper slip grease”, I used to use that on the aluminum exhaust nut to aluminum head thread, as well as on the spark plug thread.

    • @WorkshopRebuild
      @WorkshopRebuild  4 місяці тому +3

      Your comment means a lot to me and it also keeps me going! You mentioned every step from the preparation to the final result, which means you have been watching many videos. Thank you for your support!!
      The cylinder head threads were not reconditioned whatsoever, just cleaned and prepped for the coating. I was actually impressed by the condition, because many airhead owners have to build them up with weld and recut them!
      I fully agree with you about copper slip grease (copper coating). This should be applied to all fasteners along the exhaust system, including the exhaust nuts. I will be doing this once I install a brand new exhaust system to this bike.
      Have a fantastic day and I hope to see you in 2024. All the best - Regards Andreas

    Took me back a long way. I never worked on that part of my R65. I put 200,000 miles on it and sold it. They say you can't wear a BMW out, but mine was wore down to the nub. But I took the engine for granted. Never had any problems but for the rocker arm assemblies wearing out. And I worked on it a lot. Clutch cables, brakes, forks, alternator problems, throttle gears, fairing mount welds cracking and those back sub frame welds cracking. Always cleaning those Bing carbs. But I guess they're one fine motorcycle all considered.

    • @WorkshopRebuild
      @WorkshopRebuild  Місяць тому

      It sounds like you had quite the journey with your R65! Putting 200,000 miles on a motorcycle is a testament to both the rider's dedication and the machine's durability. Despite the wear and tear you encountered, it's impressive that the engine remained steadfast. Your experience highlights the maintenance and care required to keep a motorcycle running smoothly over the years. It seems like you've had your fair share of adventures and challenges with it, but as you mentioned, BMWs are renowned for their resilience. Thank you for sharing your story! Regards Andreas

    • @carlyleporter5388
      @carlyleporter5388 Місяць тому

      To be truthful, the 200,000 miles is just a close estimate. The odometer stopped working at 31,000 or so miles. But I knew how many miles I had to buy a new rear tire, seems like it was close to 10,000 miles thoroughly worn out. I kept the old tires in a stack in the corner of my shed and when I finally sold the bike and hauled them off, it was close to a pickup load. The mufflers like to rot out on them too. Not inexpensive to operate. Seems like 45 mpg was about as good as I could get driving like grandma. The full fairing was probably responsible for the gas guzzling. In summer, feet get uncomfortably hot on long rides. If caught in the rain, the fairing would keep you dry with the right posture as long as you could keep moving. Boots would fill with water however. Hydroplaning would scare you into a coma. Once you get familiar with them, they're really simple to work on. But if you use one to commute, plan on working on it. Yourself. Unless you're rich. @@WorkshopRebuild

    • @WorkshopRebuild
      @WorkshopRebuild  Місяць тому

      thank you for your feedback! the piston rings were installed 120º apart from each other, but necessarily shown in detail in this video. I have a full engine rebuild video about this engine, which shows every step of the assembly.
      Fun fact: Piston rings rotate on pistons and within the cylinder bores. Even when installed 120º apart from each other there is no control over the ring gaps after that. It's very possible they line up after every now once the engine is running.

    Awesome job Andreas!! You made that look as easy as a Meccano build. You didn't drop a single tool or small engine part onto the floor. If it was me that would be the order of the day as I'm clumsy. I was interested to see where the starter motor was housed as that was a problem on my R65 back in 1980. The dealer I took it to did a full service on it and charged me about £240 which was a lot of money back then. They didn't fix the starter problem tho🤗

    • @WorkshopRebuild
      @WorkshopRebuild  4 місяці тому +1

      Thank you, Simon! It wasn’t as easy as a Meccano assembly, but with the right tools it’s a breeze.
      No parts nor any tools were dropped during this assembly😁
      The starter is typically very accessible, as it’s beneath the started cover. Some starters had issues on the Airhead engine, because they needed to be lined up with the starter ring-gear. If they weren’t lined up correctly, the starter would get damage or in worst case scenario it would break the engine block!
      Oh wow, £240 is very expensive! Do you still have your R65?
