Fun Fact: The dog, actually named Coco, was a rescue from an Atlanta-area shelter. She was picked for the film. Since she was a rescue, she had no prior film experience and so it was a challenge to get the dog to hit its mark or get the desired shot. Can you imagine? Going from being in a shelter to on a film set in wide open locations. Originally the role of Sarii was supposed to be small but because test audiences responded so well to her, the director expanded her role.

The director said he specifically put that mud cleaning scene in there to subvert the expectation. Like, realistically, why would she leave herself muddy? I thought that was a great callback, to bait and switch.
I mean she IS a tracker, so depending on the mud it could make sense for her to mask her smell a little with some "neutral" mud. On the other hand that shit saps heat, so depending on the temperature she might want to clean it off, altho water all over your clothes is also gonna sap warmth. I'm in for subverting expectations, it's just not a true "yeah, of course she'd clean it" moment. It's not exactly illogical, but it doesn't have the instant realization of "shit, that makes a lot more sense", either.
@Phazz Assuming a tracker needs to be covered in mud is some Hollywood shit. Most animals' noses are so beyond ours that some mud is not going to throw them off a scent. Dogs track scent over miles through all types of terrain, long after the person is gone. If that worked, every modern hunter should be covered in mud. So no, her getting covered in mud and going, "Oh wow, this will make tracking easier," makes absolutely no sense.
