I'm glad this video got made. BoF3 is one of my all time favorite RPGs. I've played through this game so many times over the years since it came out, finally got a Goo King Sword about 12 years ago. I feel like 4 did a lot of stuff better, but the story didn't quite hold up as strongly and the dragon system was nowhere near as good as 3's.
Same man. Best game, i reolay it at least once a year with about 40 playthroughs so far. I try a new goal every time, and last goal I grinded out as close as I could get to a 100% completion game. All chars lvl capped, best equips, one of each weapon, armour etc where possible, maxed masters etc. I gotta say, gooking sword grind sucked. Dragonfang grind sucked the most by far though. God damn
The only bad thing about this game is to only being able to have 3 party members... All of them are AWESOME! It was very nice the way they did in BoF 4, having all the members divided in front and back row

this is one of those underrated jrpgs that you just have to play, i got lucky and got this game for 1$ at a yard sale when i was younger and this was prolly the best game ive ever found having no idea how legendary how this game was going to be lol
The tapestry in the intro is a depiction of the first game's final battle, so i've always believed BoF3 is a sequel to 1, not sure how 2 would fit in the timeline though Great work as always buddy
What wahtevr99 is correct. 2 takes place 500 years after 1 and Deathevn in 2, the final big bad is a child of the boss of 1. And the final boss of 1 was misnamed in english as Tyr due to character restraints for names. Original name is Myrria, the final boss of 3. And Deis refesr to Myrria as sister, so quite possibly they are two parts of the same whole, like Ryu and Fou-lu in 4, so the theory that 4 is a prequal has some footholds. And DQ is after 3 since civilization was forced underground, possibly due to a certain dessert a certain goddess was holding back reaching over across the great sea.
@@jamesdickens3120 come to think of it, 4 is pretty much a huge desert, if it is a prequel it would mean that was the desert Myria was holding back all along. It also makes sense with 4 being the techno age mentioned in 3 This series is as interesting as it is confusing lol

Ahh, good ole BoF 3. I haven't spent as much time on this one as I have some of the other BoFs, I still love this one a lot. A coming of age tale, of learning that all actions have consequences, and sometimes the innocent suffer from actions undertaken with the best of intentions; also the importance of responsibility is touched upon powerfully right there at the end. Yggdrasil also accomplished his mission. At the very end of the game, we observe a sproutling of a new Yggdrasil tree, planted somewhere in the desert with the intent of spreading life to it once again. Thank you for your RECAPitation. I'll rendezvous with you on the next battlefield. Lulz I experienced throughout: 1.) ... walk in on the current McNeila getting some... nighttime exercise. So, did no one else catch the Soul Calibur references in this summary? Haha Thank you for these videos, by the way! So much nostalgia, not to mention your summaries have helped fill in more gaps in my memory/knowledge of these games than I realized I had.
This game's story still holds up really well since it's overarching story isn't a battle of good and evil. Evil exists in the world to be sure, but the source of the conflict isn't simply because of some villain trying to take over the world. In most any other story Myria would be revealed to just a controlling sociopath. In this game she instead turns out to be someone who actually does have good intentions, the problem is that she wants a world of stagnancy because she feels mortals can't be left to their own devices. Myria's defeat even paints her in a sympathetic light as she wonders if everything she did was for nothing and how the world will survive without her.
Ummm Myria's a parasitic deity that lives off of the life energy siphoned from her followers, hence the zombie like people on the other side. She took out any who could stop her from turning the world into her personal plaything. She simply implies that she is trying to stop the desert but given the fact that it's always where they've lived makes that hard to believe. The first game Deis live in a floating castle in the desert (sound familiar) in the 2nd game her temple is still in the desert although not flying anymore. Coincidentally in the 3rd game Myria taken up residence in a flying castle in the desert and Deis is imprisoned... Hmmmm, sounds like Myria locked her sister up an is squatting in her castle. Unfortunately Myria needs prayers an followers for greater power an when you try to bring a bunch of people into a desert no matter how advanced they are the desert slowly kills them off. I feel like Myria by the end is suffering from a reverse of Stockholm syndrome where she's actually started to believe her lie that she's doing this all for "her children"
This game single handedly shaped my love for pixel art and RPGs, and forced me to learn basic level english as a kid. Lovely characters, amazing story and cool dragons. An all time favourite of mine, and an actually great game to boot. It pains me how much the series has fallen into oblivion. I'll never forgive Capcom for killing it so unceremoniously. Also, the australian-pink-mecha-terrorist-dolphin is one of the greatest things ever created.
Love this game. I bought a PS1 physical copy after not playing it for fifteen years roughly, just as good as I remembered. I beat it a month ago and started it over again trying to get a better time and using different masters. There’s quite a bit of replay value, even just simply by changing up mains and masters. My team ended up very different this time, but not as good as my first playthrough. Go figure.
Nice! I must have missed the streams. That sucks. Must be subbed to too many channels, they all get muddled together in my head. Hopefully he enjoyed this more than BoF2, which was still a great game imho.
Yeah there is a misstep or something in the directions you get or something but eventually I got past that damn desert of death. Its gunna kinda piss you off when you realize the teleporter in the container yard actually takes you across the desert but that damn shipping container is in your way and you can only break it from one side.....after you cross the desert.
THANKS so much for the review I remember I beat this game but the story was so bland cant remember any of it. Gunna do a Breath of fire binge and hopefully remember!
I always thought all five games was on one world. Four is the prequel, shows how the gods came and how Myria was made. Then its one, two, and three. The world slowly turns into a desert after three which forces the humans underground. Peco slowly turns the surface back into a green world and that's when five takes place.
I always assumed this one was way past the 2nd game, Myria finally awoke so many centuries after Evan's defeat and instantly began her campaign to eliminate the Brood. With them gone her control was absolute. I always figured 500 years for her to awake an then 400 years of her rule puts BoF 3 about 900 years after BoF 2 an 1400 after the first game. If this series ever comes back they should do a prequel where the original hero an 7 companions lock Myria away with the goddess keys.
The interesting thing is that the final boss for 3 is supposedly the mother of the final boss from 2. Although I don't know how that effects the timeline or not but figured I'd point that info out.
They don’t make them like this anymore. This is my favorite game tied at 1st place with Chrono trigger. I played this game A LOT back in the day. So many fond memories. I know exactly where I bought this game. It was random. I don’t know what I wanted. But I knew I was going to buy a game before I left. It was 40$ At a Best Buy. In the 90’s the video game aisle was huge. If you didn’t read about the game in a magazine. You took a chance by the cover art and reading the summary on the back.
Just repurchased this for the PSP and PS1. It is *still* freaking amazing. I think the game plays a little smoother on the PS1, but the PSP version is fine - although when it comes to the PSP I think may run better on a 2000 or 3000 model. I remember it running worse on a PSP I had years ago, and that may have been a 1000 model which has less ram. That said, this along with Wild Arms and Wild Arms 2, I'd take these over the PS1 Final Fantasies any day. I want to get BoFIV here, but I was never as big on IV as I was III.
Such an underappreciated series. If there's anything I want capcom to bring back, it is Breath of Fire. Breath of Fire 2 was my childhood RPG alongside Baldur's Gate. They introduced the genres of JRPG and WRPG to me respectively. While I love Breath of Fire 2 for nostalgia's sake, I think Breath of Fire 3 is possibly the best in the series. 4 is almost as good, it certainly isn't as 'traditional' as 3 but I still love it. 5, is controversial, but I absolutely loved it. Dragon Quarter might be my favourite depending on the day of the week, it is either that or 3. I love how the theme of a dark, depressing, harsh, unfair, cruel world is replicated in the extremely punishing dungeon crawler gameplay (alongside the best OST in the series) but I understand that it isn't everyone's cup of tea. 2 is a better version of 1 and let's forget 6 exists.
I'm glad to know I wasn't the only one who liked Dragon Quarter, I really felt that it took part in a parallel universe were the war between the dragon clans took a severe curbstomp unlike number 1 where things got fixed eventually. And number 6 , yeah let's forget that even existed.
I would like to see a properly done sequel to this game in the future, I dont care if it isn't from capcom since they seem to have their priorities somewhere else.
That or going back to the original hero an 7 companions who locked Myria away the first time using the 6 goddess keys an stopping the civil war between the light an dark dragon clans.
I tried beating this game at least 3 times but my save file always disappeared for some reason, I was WAY too young to understand the whole concept of this story thank you for your recap!
@@OniBlackMage tyty yeah this game is amazing if the world wasn't so obsessed with 3d at the time I think this game would be more well remembered for that alone though this story was probably their best yet!
This is my first BoF game and my most favorite. It's just too bad I never got to own a copy 😢. Capcom should release a BoF collection on consoles and on steam. I'm really dying to play them all again.
I know the game designers have shot this down, but I don't care--my head canon is still IV -> I -> II -> III -> V. It makes sense to me that IV is the prequel to the whole series, explaining how the Brood obtained the power of dragon gods, the origin of Deis, and presumably Yuna creates Myria as the result of his experiments. Then the original BoF happens when there are two Brood tribes at the height of their power; II takes place later on after the Brood have become peaceful; III takes place centuries after II. At the end of III the Desert of Death slowly spreads across the world and humanity flees underground while Yggdrasil gradually rebuilds nature up above, and this is when V happens.
I'd be very happy to pay $200-300 for such a game if they didn't butch it along the way *cough* FF7 remake *cough*. So yeah... better to leave it alone

24:31 why they name that attack like that
Such an underappreciated series.
Thank you so much
rei has always been my favorite character in bofIII
Strange, I remember a point in this story where the party got lost walking aimlessly for weeks in the desert... weird
This game feels like a sequel to Breath of Fire 1 and the Breath of Fire 4 feels like a prequel since it seems to resemble the age of technology
I believe the order goes 4>1>2>3, with Dragon Quarter being set in an alternate timeline.
I played this on PSP and loved it
Garr never said "time to die". that was a translation error in the game. When Garr became stone, his last words were "finally, peace".
Man this game was long... I need to play it again
One of the best RPGs ever made. Xenogears and BoF3 are top 3 in my life.
I tried beating this game at least 3 times but my save file always disappeared for some reason, I was WAY too young to understand the whole concept of this story thank you for your recap!
4:06 Imagine how much hassle could've been saved if Nina wasn't a complete idiot lol
Bof3 is special, nothing more needs to be said.

Deis: "You must release me"
Garr: "Release Deis nuts in you"
Grow up!
Ah my favorite game of all time ❤
Impressed by how gorgeous this game looks. Esp compared to 4. Is this a updated version?
There was a port to PSP but this is the original 1997 PS1 release. The sprite art and animation is just that good
@@OniBlackMage tyty yeah this game is amazing if the world wasn't so obsessed with 3d at the time I think this game would be more well remembered for that alone though this story was probably their best yet!
This is actually what drew me to this game was how beautiful it looked in a pool of 3d polygons that square was doing at the time
Does anybody know why they decided to make the goddess lady with upside-down wings?
It's symbolic of Myria's twisted nature. She claims to protect yet she effectively impeded humanity. She's like a corrupt politician basically.
This is my first BoF game and my most favorite. It's just too bad I never got to own a copy 😢. Capcom should release a BoF collection on consoles and on steam. I'm really dying to play them all again.
I thought you did one for BOF 3 before, Im surprised you haven't
I've always felt that V was the first one. Because in II you work you're way down a tower into the depths and in V you're working your way up
Aw man I missed the premiere of my favourite ps1 game's recapitation =(
My favourite rpg and i wish they would make more.
An honest to God breath of fire 5!!! Not dragon quarter a breath of fire tale but BREATH OF FIRE 5!!!
@@Lownamebrand I really liked BOF5. But it felt more like a spin off series. BOF3 will always be #1. This recap was awesome btw.
One of the greatest jrpgs
Best rpg of all time undoubtedly
25:10 Am I the only one who thinks they should do an HD version of this game with this style of graphics for the characters? 🤔😍
I'd be very happy to pay $200-300 for such a game if they didn't butch it along the way *cough* FF7 remake *cough*. So yeah... better to leave it alone
