Hello, you caught me nerding out over this podcast and being convinced into buying the the full movie box set to watch along to this podcast - now let’s talk about 7(well 10) things nerds do and don’t regret them for a second.
So… I decided to join Rob on his journey of Star Trek! I have never seen the films myself (apart from the 3 latest films) and only seen a few episodes of Star Trek, but always wanted to dive into this world! And so… what a time to do it! I watched the first film last night, I have now listened to this podcast episode and now… Now I can’t WAIT to watch the second film tonight and, even more exciting, listen to the next episode!
@@RedshirtCinemaClub Thanks for responding! I’m a huge PS Access fan so means a lot. I have now watched films 2, 3 and then I watched 4 last night and at the moment listening to podcast for film four in my free time) Film four… WHAT a fantastically fun film! Loved it!!
Haven't had a chance to listen to this yet but wanted to drop a note to say I'm excited you lot have started a podcast. Saw it in my recommended and squinted like, "hey is that...!" Instant subscribe, thanks gents.
This is great. I always appreciated how this film feels like a similar style to 2001 & 2010. Not many films of that style around. Not like the other Star Trek films, but in someways helps show the range of stories that can be told in this universe - which is Star Treks true strength when compared to the likes of the Star Wars (Good Vs Evil - Rag Tag Rebels Vs Evil Empire) or Alien franchises (Horror / Action Horror - monster(s) picking people off one by one). Very similar to Dr Who in that sense - the whole thing is set up to be able to change the setting & genre week to week - some styles of story you will love, some you will hate, and others are just fine (or you need to be in the mood for). But it keeps things fresh and allows a good range of different sci-fi stories & themes to be explored. This film is one I need to be in the mood for - but I really appreciate that it exists so I'm not just stuck wirh 2001 as my only option for this particular style of cerebral, slow paced, investigative sci-fi story. Does nothing particularly spectacular, and definitely not for everyone, but it does what it set out to do pretty well and is quite solid overall. Not the kind of film that ever really got made that much - and certainly not the type of film that gets made today. So very glad it exists. Interested to see what Rob makes of the changes made to the next, very different, film in this series.
You lads doing a movie podcast is frigging amazing. Are you planning for more than just covering Star Trek? Are you doing the Next Generations Movies, too. I'd love to hear Robs opinion about Generations and First Contact. The best installations of this franchise since the Wrath of Khan.
Wait, you *didn't* watch the director cut? Sounds like you set Rob up to not like the film! The director's cut is so vastly superior that it turns a mediocre movie into an all-time classic and one of the best trek films. Also, the TMP script was originally the pilot script (with some changes) for Star Trek: Phase II. Decker wasn't a kirk replacement, but he was intended to be the charming handsome first officer, with Kirk by Phase II being an older and more seasoned captain. Xon (the young Vulcan) was going to be the new science officer since Nimoy wasn't going to come back for Phase II. When Nimoy agreed to return, they just killed off Xon. The characters of Decker and Ilia as they had spec'd them out for Phase II became Riker and Troi in TNG.
The Motion Picture is incredibly beautiful and well made, and brings in elements from Wise’s submarine film, and set the standard for two other characters we meet in another generation
First time viewer to the series. A few thoughts: (1) you really should have had him watch 4-5 of the better original series episodes before watching the movie. Would make more sense of Kirk's character coming on board the movie years later being a little older and grumpier as an admiral, missing being a captain, having to be the bad guy to get his ship back and feeling a bit obsolete as the ship has been updated so much, pushing everything and everyone because of the situation and to be dominant over Decker, etc. If you don't see Kirk before all this in the original series, he will come off badly the way he does in the first movie. (2) Should have watched the director's cut of the movie for so many reasons. (3) As for Ilea, Uhura announces that she's Deltan, which makes everyone excited or nervous, which also should make more sense of Ilea's line that she has sworn an oath of celibacy--connected back to something of her species which must like to fornicate or procreate a lot. Not hard to figure out, even in a first time viewing. I know this is a movie reaction series, but it makes zero sense to watch the TOS movies or TNG movies without some important key episodes of the series they originate from. With TNG its a lot harder to pick episodes over 7 seasons that do build up an ongoing story, but for TOS its far easier to do so.
Ahaha - appreciate the points. We mention the lack of context a few times through the series, it's basically inarguable and true... if we were trying to make the perfect podcast about Star Trek. But really we just wanted a reason to hang out and make something together. It's limited, it's imperfect, but it's OK. And - as we'll be exploring a bit more in the Alien series coming up this month - we disagree on the director's cut. Sure, it might be a better film. But we're watching the film's as they released and as people received them, building context as we move on to the next film. So we made a decision to stick with the theatrical cut of everything we watch as a default (we may revisit some of these films in the future...)
I'm so glad Rob enjoyed The Motion Picture. It's a potentially hard sell to someone you are introducing Star Trek to for the first time in 2024. I remember really enjoying The Motion Picture the first time I saw it. I appreciate the Art-House-y style, with all the visual spectacle, and I found the plot intriguing. The more times I watch it, however, the less engaged I am. After seeing it around four times, I know what's going to happen and the visuals are no longer a spectacle, so I'm just waiting through long periods of nothing happening for it to get to the point. I still like the film as a piece of artistic cinema, and its placement within the world of Star Trek, but it's not something I have any great longing to watch again . Also, I agree with Rob about Kirk. I'm not a fan of Kirk in general, particularly in this film. He does improve in the other films though.
I beileve you hit the nail on the head when you mention shatner's character a womenizer! I think you should have pulled some of the original series episodes to give him an idea of the characters and environment of the cast and show back then, before watching, Star Trek, The Motion Picture. Also, he would also understand the title of you vlog/pod cast. About the "red shirt!" The original show was more about morals and social and global issues, and about what was right and what was wrong! Please suggest him to watch some of the better episode of the old series. Thanks for your show! Tom- North Hollywood, ca
That was my thought. I don't get why they didn't start Rob with something like a top ten TOS episode run but instead just jumped right to The Motion Picture which, IMO, is a terrible way to introduce someone to Star Trek. Every fan know the the odd number Trek movies suck, and if someone hasn't seen _Space Seed_ then Wrath of Khan just doesn't have the same impact. These are okay, but I find myself arguing a lot with the way they are going about this project so I I'm moving on.
@@DennisMoore664 I completely agree with your comments. I think it might be a generational thing, this weeks episode made mention one of the podcasters was born in 76. They would appreciate and understand the films a lot more. And yes, there were some awful movies, and others that were much better, even to the most diehard fan. And i am still listening, but might do as you and move on. There are just too many things I am not happy about their descriptions and interpretations. Be well, and thanks for the message.
This is such a terrible movie. I’ve seen all the Star Trek movies, and yet the only part of this movie I could remember was the very end😂 I’ve been enjoying this series so much. It’s such a good format. It’s great hearing Rob discover Star Trek - and I’m so looking forward to seeing what he makes of the TNG era films - but I also really appreciate the historical context from Nath and Dave. This is such a good series and I’m still catching up (Just finished my rewatch of Star Trek V and about to tune into the podcast), but I hope you’re all having as much fun with this as we are.
If you know the "lore" then you know that, having list his own crew almist totally to a ginormous world killing alien device, Decker's dad tried to steal the Enterprise to repeat it, and ended up blowing up his original inside the alien war machine
On UA-cam it looks like they will be doing daily releases for a couple of weeks. But they have already released all the star trek episodes, and some doctor who, on other podcast platforms. Do a web search for redshirt cinema club acast

Film four… WHAT a fantastically fun film! Loved it!!
LOVED this. Not even a trekkie, its just awesome hearing you three in this context and being immersed in a new universe.
Ah thank you, we're loving it for exactly this reason!

Increasingly it's best to squint while looking at us. Welcome!
The scene with Kirk seeing the Enterprise again after all those years away is brilliant.
This is great.

Time has answered this question before we could. But... yes!
The celibacy thing is explained in the novelisation- Deltans apparently have pheremones that bring all the boys to the yard.
Of course, the novelisation also counters the Kirk-Spock sexual relationship thing

It's hilarious that Star Wars is what convinced them to make a Star Trek movie and they end up going for a 2001 vibe.

I wouldn't have known about the podcast if it wasn't for this video. It's terrific. Im still working through the Star Trek ones

Star Trek is best suited for the television format.
I agree hes a bumbling fool in that movie. He wouldn’t be captian for long after that
Listened to first one, watched the movie and no onto this
0:12 Robb? You mean Robert Wise?
