@@spirg Right, you wouldn’t want to use this lens to shoot photos destined for 11x14 prints or 4K video. I’ll gladly trade a little softness for the convenience of one lens that spans a range from real wide angle to real telephoto.
Interestingly, this was the kit lens with my 70D which I bought in 2013. It's a brilliant all-rounder that still lives on the camera whereas more purpose specific lenses stay in my bag. I will say that in real life it's actually not that sharp and it does vignette a lot since, due to the slow maximum aperture it will be used wide open rather a lot. The good news is Canon camera bodies can be trained to recognize the lens and map on automatic corrections for vignetting, distortion and fringing. also on crop densor it will be 18mm or 18mm*1.6 ?
It will be 18*1.6. We always multiply with the cameras crop factor to find out the Full Frame equivalent of a lens.
So when they specify focal length even for crop sensor, the numbers are for full sensor?
Exactly! You only have to multiply with the cameras crop factor(always). And if it's a Full Frame camera, you multiply by 1.0x, so no change.
18mm is 18mm, but on a crop sensor camera an 18mm lens gives a field of view that a 28mm lens would give on a full frame sensor.
