A Nice Pancake Lense - Canon 40mm f2.8 (2 Benefits)
Переглядів 2,3 тис.2 місяці тому
The Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM is one of the most popular pancake lenses for Canon’s full-frame DSLRs, offering two great benefits: First, the 40mm focal length on a full-frame camera provides a wider angle than the classic 50mm, making it more versatile, especially in tight spaces. Secondly, it is small and lightweight, so its more portable and less intimidating. When you combine these benefits, ...

I've been concerned that the f/1.4 lens wasn't significantly better than the nifty-fifty f/1.8. (I got the f/1.4 used for the price of a new f/1.8.) According to your results, the f/1.4 is absolutely terrible, but I've not seen this previously in others' comparisons. I'm wondering if you happened to use a particularly poor copy in your tests. In fact, I was just looking at a comparison, and the f/1.4 is very noticeably sharper at f/2.0 than the f/1.8.
For these tests, I used a mirrorless camera, the Canon EOS R, set at its challenging resolution of 30.3 megapixels. By using a mirrorless camera, any potential lens decalibration issues are resolved. That is how the tests turned out. I am not aware of any other issues the lenses might have had, but I'm fairly certain there weren't any. Either way, I wouldn't be concerned about the f/1.4's sharpness performance; it is very good. The two lenses are very similar. For my tests, I photographed an A3 printed image and performed heavy cropping in the corner. In real life, these sharpness differences are extremely small. I wouldn't worry about the sharpness of an Canon 50mm f/1.4; it is a good lens.
What about wedding photography?
What about it?
Nice and critical comment. Bought one after this review. Will be my lens for outside photography on a Olympus mx1.
Great! Enjoy your Olympus 17mm f/1.8 lens!
its a worse efm 22 f2 basically
Yes, something like that - very close performance to the EF-M 22mm f/2.
Can this lens work with my lumix S5iix?
Unfortunately not, it is a lens for Micro Four Thirds sensor cameras. The S5IIX is a Full Frame camera and works with L Mount lenses.
Good video thanks 👍
Does it work with canon eos r50?
It will work if you have the EF to EOS R mount adapter.
I just went & got the R8 instead
The R8 is definitely better, enjoy it! If you want to use EF lenses (Canon Full Frame DSLR lenses), you'll still need the EF to EOS R adapter - if not, just get native RF mount lenses for your R8, where no adapter is needed. All the best!
I was on edge about purchasing this - I thought it was over-hyped from social media. But I really needed a smartphone alternative because I am getting annoyed with the AI corrections IPhone applies (which can't be turned off unless I pay for third party apps). I bit the bullet and bought this second hand today, it was incredibly difficult to find anything new in stock that wasn't marked up by another 300 dollars! I am mostly interested in snapping photos so I hope I made the right choice (it was between this and the sony RX100 and ricoh GR which are slightly more expensive)
I believe you made the right choice! When compared to the Canon G7X Mark II, the Sony RX100 is good enough starting with the Mark III version, and the Ricoh GR doesn't have a flip screen (so less flexibility). Enjoy your Canon camera!
Its prety solid, yes!!! Its realy usable.... Its not superb image quality. But its very solid!!! When 60d came out i bought it with this lens. And used it for filming, and it was great. Realy usable... Its actualy not bad. It has its downsides, it cuts a little hilights off... But for documentary shooting, its very, very usable. I would actualy recomend. For photography. I did good. idk. Some primes would do much better. But for video i 100 percent can recomend. Its not something super amazing. But it gets the job done realy solidly. I think the technology is just far enough to do things correctly and precisely easily enough...
For everyday I prefer 14-150 which is also sealed.
That is also a nice lens. I'm planning to get a 14-150mm too, although I consider it more of a lens for vacations and travel photography. What I had in mind when referring to the 17mm as an everyday photography lens (besides its versatile wide angle and fast aperture) is its small size, which makes the camera more portable-one of the main benefits of an MFT camera. With a 14-150mm, the camera is less portable, but it is indeed a good lens.
Does it work in xt100
Yes, this lens is compatible with the X-T100, it will work.
Sharpness doesnt look good at all in the test
Great video
Thank you!
De când așteptăm, urmează să îl cumpăr ,am vândut 24-105 f4
will this work with canon r50?
It will work if you have the EF to RF mount adapter
@@apertureatlas if using a mount adapter, will it affect or degrade the focus speed and image quality of the r50?
@@unknownplayrs2023 If you buy the Canon EF-EOS R Mount Adapter, there are no optical elements in it, so image quality will not be affected (or very minimally). I don't know about focus speed, but I used the EF to EOS M adapter and didn't notice any issues. So everything should be good as long as you get the adapter made by Canon.
@@apertureatlas so informative, thanks so much brother❤️
Oh also one more thing, I'm debating between getting a canon r50 vs a sony a6400, in 2024, which would be the best for photography? rarely shoot videos @@apertureatlas
This is an outstanding lens. Wish LUMIX had one for full frame cameras.
Maybe they will release one (hopefully)
@@apertureatlas yes the S9 certainly calls for it.
24-105mm F2.8L is the new hype
Yes, the RF 24-105mm f/2.8L is a nice one. It's very expensive, though, but nice.
My old Canon SL2 was made to be like the 80D. I still use the SL2 once in a while.
I have the Tamron f/2.8 24-70 with "VC". Using my M6 mark II, I can use the mount adapter with the crop factor. If I use the speedbooster, I can get 17mm shots at f/2. I have never used this Canon lens. The Tamron makes hand held shots easy.
I would also choose Tamron over this. Better image quality, has stabilisation, smaller and lighter. Have to buy Canon very carefully, especially on internet. Most have been heavily used so there is big proportion of them with damage (internal - affecting image quality, external- bent rims).
@@rolandsv8 mpb and keh have been my places for EF lenses.
What do you think about the Canon 24-70mm f/2.8?
Mine performs very well on my Sony A7ii, i am still using it for all of my studio and event photography.
@@dizzydomingo7436 Nice! Glad to hear that!
The older lens does has it characteristics love mines minus this lens extends when zoominG but it worth it. Got mines for $400 in FB marketplace.
@@ZsuzexZux Great!
😮🤩
Well done - a thorough review. I love the 14-140mm. I have recently acquired a 12-40mm f2.8 Olympus which reminded me that the 14-140mm is not technically perfect. The 12-40mm on the other hand does seem technically perfect but also delivers an amazing rendering and bokeh. The 14-140mm nevertheless always amazes me at the long end, as it has such incredible reach for such a small lens and does generate some decent bokeh. While it is not wholly sharp, it is sharp enough if not pixel peeping. I prefer it over the alternative for travel etc, which is for me a full frame camera and a Canon 70-200mm f2.8L + 1.4 teleconverter!!
Thank you! I am planning on getting an Olympus 12-40mm f/2.8 or a Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8, but I always appreciate the versatility of a 14-140mm. It's great for traveling, and an MFT camera with its small lenses is ideal for travelers!
Haha it lives permanently on my M50 as a webcam now, I moved to Sony :D
I can either buy this brand new or the f1.4 used in excellent condition for a similar price. Which would you recommend?
Both are good. I believe the f/1.4 focuses faster, not to mention that it lets in more light, so I would get the f/1.4 version.
I've met people who have had one gor years without issues. Some don't like that apparently the focusing motor is prone to failing, according to online forums. The STM is said to be better in some optical aspects and the 1.4 is said to have a bit more charisma of its own. Neither is a bad choice. I had the 50mm f1.8 and loved it. Sharp af at 2.8 too.
i have both lens, but the efm 22mm is sharpest of all the lens i have
Lovely review, please What nd filter can I use for this lens?
I don't use filters that much and definitely didn't buy one for this Panasonic lens. I see that it takes a 46mm filter. My suggestion is to avoid the cheapest ones and get one from a well-known brand with good reviews. You can find alternatives and reviews with a Google search, so please check there, as I am not savvy when it comes to ND filters.
Can this work on canon 5D mark 4?
Unfortunately not, it is mentioned in the video - it was made to work only on Canon's APS-C sensor dslrs.
What I don't like is because it is very heavy
Yes, 730g. For today's standards, it is a bit heavy, considering how much less APS-C mirrorless cameras weigh. However, at least it is not as heavy as the 5D Mark II (904g).
was the video footage from Bucharest ?
Yes
Will this work with Olympus cameras
On Olympus mirrorless cameras, yes.
just got my baby last night ❤
Nice! Enjoy it!
500g + 100g (the adapter) -> won't the little mirrorless camera's mount break from the weight.. ?
The mount holds up pretty well. I have used even heavier lenses, such as the first version of a Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 L (1kg) and the Sigma 100-400mm Contemporary (1.16kg), on a Canon M50 with an adapter without any damage. I have even held the whole setup with one hand. However, it is recommended not to wiggle the camera too much in this situation. Most of the time, we place one hand on the lens and the other on the camera to balance the weight, so everything is fine.
Actually Panasonic LX100-ii is the best. Unless u can afford a Leika.
Of course Panasonic LX100 II is better, it has a MFT Sensor that is almost 2x Larger. And indeed, if you have the budget, a Leica is even better.
Excelente explicação! Grato
Questions let's say I want to take some photos at a band that is playing at a restaurant. Stage has lights and gig is at night. Which is the best lence to use
The short answer is that you need both. The long answer depends on how far away is the stage, how crowded is the place (if you have space to move around). I assume that you have an APS-C sensor Canon camera, since the 24mm f/2.8 from this video will not work on Full Frame cameras - the list goes on. I would find a way to borrow both (especially if I were to be someone that never photographed in that scenario) and see what works out. There is also the option to borrow a fast zoom lens like a 24-70mm f/2.8, there are shops that offer rentals.
Will this work with my canon EOS 7d mark ii?
Yes, it will.
I thought the mark II was weather sealed
There are people on the internet, on forums, saying that this lens is splash/weather resistant; even a few not-so-popular websites say it, but there is no weather sealing gasket near the mount, so I wouldn't classify it as a weather sealed lens. On the dpreview, a more serious website, it says that it has "some degree of weather-sealing" , so its not the real deal. In contrast, The LUMIX G VARIO 12-60mm F3.5-5.6 ASPH. (indeed) has weather sealing because it has the gasket.
Should i get usm or stm?
The two represent the focus motor/technology. STM is the cheaper version, USM is the more "pro" and expensive version. It depends on your budget. Newer USM lenses (from the RF mount, for example) are definitely better than STM . USM, it is said, is a more quiet and precise focusing system. Hope this helps! All the best!
@@apertureatlas thanks a lot ❤️ I bought usm yesterday. Let’s see how it works 😊
I can not understand why nobody has tested this lens on the new OM1mII !?!??!
Perhaps it's because the OM-1 MK II was just released in January 2024.
It is one of my favorite lens. I own the 17mm, 25mm, 45mm and 75mm 1.8 and 30mm 3.5. The 17mm and 25mm are my favorite street and general lens. The utimate is the 75mm...
At F6.3 you have the optimal performance. Instead of F8.
Gonna pick one up in a few hours. Was going to get a 77d mainly for the higher ISO options. The weather sealing is dropped wich is not a problem for me. However, yesterday i looked into a battery grip wich my 550d has had installed for about 10 years. And the 77D just does not support a proper one. That is such a dealbreaker for me. So, 80d it is. Excited to get a "new" body after so many years. 550d is going to my daughter for her 8th bday. Yeah she's young for a dslr. But why get a lesser one if ican find an excuse to get her something decent while upgrading myself. :P But in short. Nobody talks about the options for battery grip. But once i had one i knew i will always want one. Not having the option to install it later would be really annoying to find out after a purchase.
You made a good decision! While the 77D is also good, the 80D is better in all aspects. Enjoy it! Cheers!
good job
Thank you!
Is canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens suitable for EOS-700D body? And what's the price range? TIA
Yes, it is and the price range goes from 45 to max. 125 USD on the used market. They don't sell it anymore in camera stores, so that should be the correct price on the used market. Cheers!
Everything is a trade off
True
Do I need an adaptor when using this lens with a Canon M50 Mark II?
Yes, you need the EF to EOS M adapter, otherwise the lens won't even fit - different systems/different mounts.
@@apertureatlas wonderful, I appreciate your timely response! Thank you. 👍
this lens was one of the reasons I wanted a Canon DSLR. but I have to say, I like the 50mm 1.8 more, and that's not much longer.
It got stuck to my canon 7d 😅😅 best lens ever, but I still love the 50mm f1.8 stm
Sorry to hear that it got stuck, but at least it is a versatile lens that you can use for everyday shooting. The 50mm f/1.8 STM is nice too.
I feel heavy inspiration from another youtuber ^^ Well done, but if I may, you really need to improve the sharpness chart
Yes, I admitted in the comments on some previous videos that I got my inspiration from Christopher Frost. However, I leave my own mark by giving structure and always covering those 12 aspects. Regarding the sharpness chart, I worked on it for two days straight. I did the best I could, arranging the lines, the photos, and so on. I don't know yet how I can make it better, but in my opinion, it is decent.
@@apertureatlas No problem everybody takes inspiration somewhere to start, your work is good 👍 As for the chart, it seems the resolution is too low we don't see the differences, you need a bigger panel and find the appropriate print size and shooting distance. Also you could remove those magnets, they're distracting. Btw I personnaly think the chart of C. Frost is a little too simple and could offer a bit more information like a sagittal meridional patterns mid frame for example.
Thank you for the good suggestions! It is an A3-sized print, and the magnets keep it attached without any lumps. The quality of the print is good; they had excellent equipment. A bigger print and some good glue might do the trick. I'll think about it. Thanks again! I appreciate it!
Or just switch from a Canon to another brand that allows the use of third-party lenses, and use a Tamron or Samyang 35-150 f2-2.8 .
This year, Canon, through one of their chief executives, mentioned that they will allow third-party lenses on their R cameras. Unfortunately, this statement was ambiguous - it’s not clear if or when we will indeed get Tamron, Sigma, or Samyang lenses for R cameras. In my opinion, not letting other brands produce lenses for them was one of Canon's biggest mistakes. Hopefully, things will get back to normal, as they should have been in the first place. Regarding the 35-150mm lens, the 35mm is not wide enough for group shots in tight spaces. The 24-70mm f/2.8 still remains the most versatile for weddings.
@@apertureatlas I use Sony and I love that various companies compete with each other to produce the best lenses at lower prices than their competitors. I think Canon doesn't want to join this competition because they fear losing profit, which is a legitimate concern, but people aren't foolish. For example, I have a Sigma 85mm DG DN Art lens that's laser sharp. I don't believe anyone with common sense would buy the Canon alternative for twice the price. I'm glad Sony still has challengers because brands like Nikon and Fuji use Sony sensors in most of their cameras, increasing their exposure to Sony. It wouldn't be good for the market if this balance tipped even further in Sony's favor.
There is quite a significant 'battle' between Sony and Canon fans, and from my observations, Sony fans are more vocal. This is neither good nor bad. I admit, I am more inclined to choose Canon, but I have avoided buying an R generation camera because I do not see good lens options (their mistake). I still won't buy an R camera until I see Sigma/Tamron/Samyang lenses available. Given Canon's greediness, it's understandable that Sony users are more vocal-they have a point, and they are right.
I use it on my Canon R 8 😊 because R8 just automatically turns on the crop mode
