    I have the STM version. It is my "go to" lens for my 70D. Versatile focal range. The STM is quiet for video. Lens is good for stills, too.I recommend it.

    Thank you for a most informative and balanced review. A pleasure to listen to someone who knows what they're talking about and supplies plenty of info but without confusing comparative DSLR newcomers such as myself. I have an SL2 together with Canon's 24mm f2.8 pancake and the rather wonderful 50mm f1.8, but I have been looking for a good general purpose zoom for walking/travel purposes. You helped convince me to give this one a try, managed to pick one up secondhand for £200. Liking it very much so far :)

    I just bought this lens - I got the heck of a bargain on it!
    And I bought a JJC lens hood for it, and this is the first third party hood that seems to be every bit as good as my original Canon hoods: perfect fit and finish.
    But I was really surprised how big and heavy this lens is!
    I also bought the PZ-E1 power zoom unit, and there's a bluetooth remote and a memory card on the way as well: The Canon BR-E1 and a Lexar Professional 1667x 256GB SDXC UHS-II - I hope it's compatible with the Eos 90D that should be arriving at my door in about a week!

    I love this lens! I must have 15 Canon lenses and this is my third 18-135 which I bought only to be able to use the power zoom attachment (which works great!). I have nearly 800 videos of musical performances up on YT and at least half were shot with this lens. It is a great all-in-one lens! It works perfectly on my 70D, 80D and C100. Love it!

    I have the previous generation of the 18-135 that came with the 70D. For a long time the lens was good enough for me as a general walk around lens. I think the general consumer who will buy the new 18-135 nano usm lens will love it when they buy it as a kit. The only thing that worries me is the price of the lens on its own. I know that good glass costs more but still.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  8 років тому +1

      +Danny I agree, but I do expect that the price will drop over time. I suspect the new technology is probably more expensive to produce (at least initially). Nano USM is very impressive, though.

    Great review, Dustin :) I recently purchased the 80D kit with this lens. Here in Norway, the price of the lens is around 2/3 to 3/4 of the full price when bought this way. I have a 6D with a nice set of pro lenses and I actually wanted the 80D just for its video capabilities. Thus I will never come to expect the fantastic quality that I get with my 6D and, say, the Canon 135mm f/2L. But the auto focus... WOW! Amazingly fast! It is so darn impressive. And quiet. And so is the IS! The 80D + this lens + the 10-18 STM now together make up my new killer video combo. I haven't bought the slot-on zoom appliance yet, and don't know if I will (I'm a bit disappointed that the zoom lever seems to be fixed to one of two speeds, instead of being variable like many old camcorders are).
    Once again thanks for an interesting video. Please keep up your great work.

    Hello Dustin which is better for Photography & Videos, USM OR STM?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  5 років тому +1

      I would say Nano USM is better for both (it’s essentially STM on steroids). Ring-type USM is my preference for manual focus over the focus-by-wire systems, but if you are comparing Nano-USM vs STM, I prefer Nano.

    IS. I understand IS to a point. If holding in hand, zoomed to 200+mm at shutter speed 1/250, should IS be turned off. I'm thinking about tripod applications where IS is off to keep the camera from doing that is movement when it is not needed. However, I am not certain that my hands can hold the camera very still all the time when zoomed to its max focal length, even at the faster shutter speeds (1/125-1/250), especially on hikes.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI

    How does this lens perform in low light situations? We are currently shooting with our stock lenses and I did watch a review on it for low light situations but just want to make sure. We shoot a lot of weddings and our outdoor and daylight situations are always so crisp but indoor in mood lighting and low light situations it seems to suffer in quality and the footage is very grainy. I prefer to work with a zoom lense as it presents itself useful most of day and so I don't really have to get to close to my subjects by getting in the way. Thanks in advance :)

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  5 років тому

      If you do a lot of wedding shooting, then you need to invest in a wide aperture lens, not a variable aperture slow zoom like this that doesn't let in much light. This isn't a lens designed for weddings.

    How do you compare the Canon 18-55mm STM vs the Canon 18-135mm Nano USM? I have the 18-55mm STM that came with my Canon T7i and wanted to get a more overall walkabout lens making it less gear to carry on vacation. I have some prime lenses and a wide angle lens, but ran into issues with zoom length when events occur and I had the 18-55mm STM on the camera. Is image quality as good or better? I understand the zoom is remarkably better on the 18-135mm Nano USM.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI

    Scary price but then no one ever claimed Canon was a value brand. There is one up for sale locally with peculiar damage to one of the hood mounting lugs - the plastic hasn't shattered so much as crumbled. I have also seen plenty of Canon lenses with damage to the plastic mount. If you get hold of an old Minolta plastic fantastic from the '90s and attack the thing you will have to work hard to destroy it because the plastic they used was almost certainly polycarbonate. Not so with Canon. Treat your Canon consumer level gear very gently would be my advice.

Seems like this lens has a great basic coverage of what i need from wide to prostrate. Its f/3.5 can really help taking photos later in the day. The pricing is a fair. I'm awsome review! Anyone who isn't into the Video Crowd can still use the older 18-135 STM, which the exactly *same* optically MTF, its way cheaper, too. And STM Stepper Motor is quite good enough for Video Work, too. Not everybody needs the new NanoUSM HighSpeed AF Motor Drive, and i am quite much more concered with this lens, especially from CAs, check out the DPReview Samples - it's partially really a mess with these high chromatic abberations - something i've never seen with any of my lenses.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  8 років тому

      +Marc P. I agree that the image quality is not really improved, but the mechanical operation is the big deal with this lens. I don't know that I would recommend someone with the STM sell it to buy this one, but I certainly do think the autofocus performance merits spending a bit more to get this lens. The older lens is only "way cheaper" when gotten either on sale or in a kit with a camera body - the actual price is only $50 less.

      Hi Dustin, well, if you think at last here into germany one can get the "old" (2013) 18-135 STM into mint condition for around ~200 EUR, but the suggested price for the "new" 18-135 NanoUSM is 599$, or 470 EUR at the cheapest seller currently into germany, and the older STM Version is currently 285 EUR as for today - we're talking here by no means for just 50 bucks difference, but almost 200 EUR, which is a lot, considering Canon doesn't have had upgraded the Optics into the 18-135 NanoUSM. So, yes...one get very fast AF Speed with this new 18-135 Iteration, but in terms of Optics, it's quite disappointing, compared to it's older STM-Brother in Law.
      I understand that you as Mr. Brian Smith are promoting that new NanoUSM Lens here - no offence or -bad meant, Brian.
      Canon slowly shows new Innovations - for instance, the 550D 18 APS-C Sensor, it does have been used now to date into more than 12-13 DSLR & Mirrorless Canon Camera, also into 7D I, and still, into the EOS M, or 1300D Entry Level DSLR...like the 1200D before, and so on, and on...the product street into the fab is long time ago being written off, and Canon possibly did Millions of this now old Sensor Design - DR is way behind Sony, Nikon, Pentax...but that doesn't stop Canon from using it into their latest 1300D, for example.
      It's just old whine into new bottles, and so it is also been here the case with the new NanoUSM 18-135....AF Drive updated, motorized PowerZoom AddOn avialable - but besides this....still recycled, old Tech (same Optics & IQ, and lots of CAs here, too) Even one Guy from the DPReview Stuff wrote into the Comments Section (Dan xxxx, last name forgotten) that he isn't impressed with this Lens, just to be honest, that isn't a great lens, for the Price, Canon asks.
      When it does come cheap as "Kitlens" AddOn for the 80D, it might be alright - but not as Aftermarket Retail Product / Price to Performance Ratio. Nothing bad meant, Dustin.
      Just for instance (i know this 18-135 NanoUSM is APS-C, the 24-105 STM is FF) the latter one is close in IQ to the 24-105/4L USM, whileas as Retail Aftermarket product at least 100 Bucks cheaper then the newer 18-135 NanoUSM, and the better deal for my Taste. (for FF Users)
      Just my thought of view.
      regards,
      Marc

      +Marc P. No problem, Marc. I'm going by the US retail prices. There is always variances in prices from region to region, and you can always get older lenses for less than their MSRP. My review makes it clear that I'm disappointed the optics aren't more improved, too, but I do think the new focus system is a huge leap forward.

    Nice review for this lens. I am looking at buying a Canon 77D with this kit lens included. Since the 77D is a smaller and lighter body than the 80D, will this lens be balanced well and not too heavy for the 77D. I was originally going to get the 18-55 STM kit lens and then add the 55-250 STM later but the 77D with 18-55 kit lens is no longer an option. Thank you.

    Excellent review !! Whc one do you suggest between 18-135 STM and 18-135 Nano USM for an average user for good quality Images and Video !!

      +Chaitu Gadiraju The autofocus is so much better in the 18-135. So much better. I'd go for it based on that alone.

    Excellent review ! Perfect & precise ! To sum it up, its not a great lens, when I bought the 80D, I opted for this, because, that time, I didn't know much about this, and moreover didn't have many choices apart from the 18-55. Now, I feel, I've made a mistake falling for the package, ie, buying a camera with a kit lens. Now, the only option is, use this as much as possible, rough it up & move forward. BTW, thanks for this review

      @isaactruman what do you have on your camera now? What do you wish you would have bought instead on this 18-135?

    Fantastic review. Quick question - have you tested/owned the 10-18mm STM from Canon? If so, when it comes to overall sharpness, is there a difference?
    Thanks!!

      @DustinAbbottTWI  7 років тому

      I haven't used the 10-18mm, James, but I would expect the IQ to be a bit better from the 10-18. It covers a much small focal range.

    • @jameslarsen9814
      @jameslarsen9814 7 років тому

      Ok, Thanks! I own the 10-18mm STM and it is sharp, just I am finding the zoom range to be a little restricting for me. I mainly shoot FF, but use the 80D for video, and I think the 18-135 would be more practical for me, so I might sell it and get an 18-135mm to be my go to lens for the 80D.
      In my position, do you think that'd be a smart idea? I love the 10-18mm, but it's just a little bit wide for me actually.

      James Larsen It doesn't matter how sharp a lens might be if it isn't a useful focal length for you. It's not just about owning the best option; it's about owning the right option for your shooting style.

      True. I do think I am going to sell it and get the 18-135mm. Thanks for your advice - it's really helpful!

    It's a shame they didn't upgrade the optics after investing so much effort into improving the build nd technology.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  8 років тому

      +trevorpinnocky I agree, though there is probably a practical limit to how good the optics can be in a lens with a 7.5x zoom range. I think it could have been better, though.

      +Dustin Abbott If your appliance is mainly video in 1080p then the optics are more than fine. This lens together with the 80D makes up a killer high-quality camcorder combo. For those mainly in need of an all-round DSLR lens with which to capture photos I agree, however.

    Thanks a lot for this one! Helped me a lot about this Nano USM. I was really upset cause I thought the kit that comes with D80 was the old school USM...

    Is this lens good for vlogging?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI

      I think so. It goes wide enough to allow you nice flexibility, and then you can zoom in, too.
