    This whole concert should be watched. It's probably the best concert ever recorded. Metallica at their height of greatness. Nobody could touch them then. You need to watch "Battery" from this same show. So much faster and aggressive than the studio version and it's 2 hours into the show! I hope to see you react to that one.

    Cliff Burton was a huge H.P. Lovecraft fanatic , and this was sort of an homage to their late bandmate and friend. It's based on the Lovecraft short "The Shadow over Innsmouth", which also has a movie titled "Dagon" that's loosely based on this story. Call of Ktulu was co-written with Burton as well, and was kind of "his" song, along with Orion.

    This song is a killer example of why Metallica stand apart from other bands, imo... The sheer variety of their music and how they execute it and how they blend sounds together. They can set a scene, take you on a journey and tell a story so well, it's like they reach into my brain and force it to conjure up feelings and imagery.

      There are plenty of bands with more variety of music that execute and play together better than metallica. I love metallica but be honest here. Or listen to more music. This was their prime that last for more 5 years. The last almost 30 years they were a band struggling to keep relevant

    • @timbob1145
      @timbob1145 Рік тому +1

      @@mpmarques I agree about their struggles, but much of it has been a result of them at first trying something new then after the constant complaining trying to appease fans then live up to the past etc... Black album, load, reload, even st anger have some great music on them, nothing like the early stuff obviously, but that doesn't matter, they already did that stuff and it was awesome. More recently death magnetic was a welcome change to me when when it came out, clearly wasn't ride or mop but was ok.
      Also if they had tried to be relevant in the beginning they wouldn't have been playing thrash metal that only a few bands were doing and then wouldn't have made ride or mop, as again they deviated from all other thrash metal... So screw being relevant, them trying to do that over the years has definitely caused them problems. So I guess I agree on the short peak of their song writing, but what a peak. For me, their music, particularly the first 5 albums, is untouchable, first time I heard mop all the way through was like discovering another universe to me.

      Also, arguably Sanitarium could be tied in there with the whole insanity theme.

    • @TirpitzLuminare
      @TirpitzLuminare 11 місяців тому +2

      @@DeusEx1977 I mean every song is open to interpretation so I won't say you and the other person are "wrong". However it is well documented that _Welcome Home (Sanitarium)_ was 100% inspired by _One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest_ after James watched it.
      As for _Suicide & Redemption_ and the demo being named _"K2LU,"_ well that can be anything really. If I were to guess it was an unnamed instrumental, and _The Call of Ktulu_ was their first instrumental, so it was simply a place holder. I could be wrong, but I've never heard of any connection to Lovecraft's work with this particular song.
      This is what is 100% known;
      _The Call of Ktulu_ - This song was a directly influenced by Cliff Burton and Kirk Kirk Hammett''s obsession with H.P. Lovecraft at the time. They were both really into it. They intentionally misspelled "Cthulhu" as they were worried about copyright issues.
      _The Thing That Should Not Be_ - Is taken directly from _'The Shadow Over Innsmouth'_ and the entity referred to as "The Thing That Should Not Be", which is Cthulhu, or another god in the mythos, I forget, it's been literally decades since I've read this. At any rate there is a interview on UA-cam somewhere that shows Burton discussing this very topic.
      _All Nightmare Long_ - This song is about _The Hounds of Tindalos._ While not created by Lovecraft, but rather Frank Belknap Long in his short story of the same name in 1929. Lovecraft talks about them in his short story _"The Whisperer in Darkness"_ in 1931. They where henceforth inducted into the the Lovecraftian mythos. Again, there is a Death Magnetic era video someplace out there where James talks about how fucked up these things are, and how they will never stop until they get you. Due to them being so obscure, or hard to quantify, and nearly impossible to translate to film -- which is Cosmic Horror in a nutshell -- they just did some weird Tunguska experiment monster for the video.
      And finally,
      _Dream No More_ - This song is full of references of Lovecraft's work, including the actual god of the mythos -- Cthulhu.
      This is why I said there are four songs, as each one can be directly linked to Lovecraft's work or mythos.
      Again, songs are open to interpretation, and if you feel _Welcome Home_ is inspired by Lovercaft's work, then man that's awesome.

    • @preciousroihomeshoppingnet7908
      @preciousroihomeshoppingnet7908 Рік тому +6

      @@Shawn-mo6dh That version of Metallica probably isn't even my 3rd favorite band Robert has been in, if we're going by music released. Robert could have never been in Metallica and it wouldn't make any difference to my love for Metallica or Robert. I mean, its nice, he's a great bassist...but his stuff with Suicidal Tendencies is more important and influential than anything he's done with Metallica. I'd love to see a Suicidal/Metallica show, as long as Metallica stuck to stuff they recorded before Robert joined the band...before the Black album, preferably. I love the idea of Robert Trujilo in Metallica, in a "well, somebody's got to do it" and he's getting paid and great for him. But, I don't like him as a member of Metallica as much as I do/did Jason. The Metallica that Robert Trujilo is a part of isn't one I'd be that excited to see in concert, unless it was some show they were only gonna play stuff from the first four (five if I'n feeling generous) albums and say, Garage, Inc.
      And as a member of the band, I like Jason better. He's an underdog who got screwed by the villain of the piece, the worst human being to ever be a member of the band, Lars. Robert had more leverage and could probably kick the shit out of the Dane if he got too mouthy, and the band had probably learned its lesson, or at least realized they'd been sort of pricks.
      Robert might be a better bassist, but he's part of a band that is past their prime, Jason was there when Metallica was the most important band on Earth. When real, true, honest thrash Metal music with serious political and social messages took on the world and won for a brief shining moment. He might not have been part of the engine that got them there, but he helped push it across the line...somebody had to play bass so Lars could pretend it didn't exist. And as you can see, he contributed to the live shows and engaged with the fans right away.

    Yep, H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu and The Great Old Ones in general. Mentioning the name Cthulhu will bring him closer so the song was called 'The Call Of Ktulu'. Also the songs All Nightmare Long, Dream No More. So it's 4 songs including 'The Thing That Should Not Be' , I just found out. Thought it was just 3. Apparently 'All Nightmare Long' is based off of 'Hounds of Tindalos'. According to wiki: "A Hound of Tindalos is a fictional creature created by Frank Belknap Long and later incorporated into the Cthulhu Mythos when it was codified by August Derleth. They first appeared in Long's short story "The Hounds of Tindalos", first published in the March 1929 issue of Weird Tales. Lovecraft mentions the creatures in his short story "The Whisperer in Darkness" (1931)." 💡

    Disposal Heroes is probably the heaviest song on the album, heavier than Battery. Probably the best, most impactful yet underrated song Metallica has done.
    Damage Inc. Is the fastest song on the album.

    Hi Lilly. Metallica has 3 songs written about Cthulhu.
    1) The call of Ktulu (originally called when hell freezes over) from ride the lightning.
    2)This. The thing that should not be from master of puppets
    And
    3) Dream no more from Hardwired to self destruct.
    Well picked by you.

    This is from a box set that came with three CDs, two VHS tapes, a tshirt with the little demon flippin the bird and a laminate pass. It was called Live Shit Bunge and Purge. This song is kind of a callback to HP Lovecraft just like the Call of Cthulhu.

    Probably should’ve commented on Welcome Home reaction. This was the song prior to Welcome on album. You said Welcome started slow but that was to help flow of album. Not only was writing a kick ass song important but how it fit in the album was almost as important. The listener was driven crazy by Thing and placed into Sanitarium. To answer your ? , yes this is thematically related to Call of Cthulhu.
    These were awesome concerts especially since they were still an underground band with no radio or MTV play. Felt like marathon, car wreck, adrenaline high & fist fight after going home.

      I hate to be THAT guy, but Metallica did get MTV airplay thanks to the music video for the song "One". This concert was in August of 1989, 8 months after the music video for "One" debuted on MTV.

    Absolutely related to Call of Cthulhu. This is a lyrical homage to Lovecraftian lore, where Call of Cthulhu was the instrumental. Their heaviest and best song in my opinion. The heavy guitar and lyrical content are a pure masterpiece.

    Call of Ktulu was a reference to "The Call of Cthulhu" by H.P. Lovecraft. I always had the feeling this one was inspired by a few different Lovecraft stories, but topping the list is "The Unnameable".

    this song is directly connected to Ride The Lightning's The Call of Ktulu . the only song I can think uf in the first 4 albums to be a sequel. "we all know about the Unforgiven trilogy if we know our Metallica. but this is special for those of us who've been in for the long haul .
