I cant stand the orchestral arrangements/additions on any of the projects they used them on... They do nothing to add to the song, and just make it way too busy. There songs are already composed so well with just the four instruments and overdubs. Literally all they had to do was get a few musicians on some classical instruments to take the spot of some of the overdubs, or to just play pedal notes or something, and it would be so much better than the convoluted mess that any of the orchestral projects were.
@@glumsulk I kinda agree. On some of their hotter and faster and louder songs it totally is just a whole mess, but even the little addition of violins strucking during the 000 chuggy-chugg riff in chorus just turn S&M into their own thing. Doesn't have to be awesome, just a different experiece
The weird hand thing that kirk(lead guitarist) was doing was kind of a percussive technique. He was basically muting the strings as much as possible so that they wouldn’t produce a pure note while using a wah pedal(or maybe a phaser) to sweep through the frequency range. Cliff taught them well. they knew how before him but you can tell from ride the lightning on down that he and kirk taught Lars And James well.
The micro transitions from soft to heavy vocals in the “1-2” verses (not chorus) James does are so raw and unique. “Hybrid children watch the sea(soft) - pray for father roaming free (Heavy)” and this continues for every “1-2” of the song
Yes. Metallica are still recording and touring. They recently did a big concert at Slane Castle in Ireland. Check out the videos from that on UA-cam. Please give us a reaction on how his voice has aged. Thanks angel.
Saw them a few years ago in Philly, his voice was fine. Really good show actually, the sound setup was on point. Really loud, but clean. No problem hearing the vocals at all, which is usually an issue at those sort of shows.
I'm happy that you are so open-minded to music and musicians and that you see the real deal of some artists. just like the james hetfield expression. This guy just looks like he could jump at you at any time and rips your chest apart xD This Voice and expression in combination with the music is why metallica is a pretty hard metal band.
I don’t think James Hetfield ever thought this much about what he was doing vocally. He just got up there and growled. He was far more into his guitar playing.
AFAIK, at this point in time James was THE vocalist of Metallica - because originally he with Lars just put together a band, with him as temporary vocalist (they were searching for a vocalist in their early career). But then again they were kinda broke and when the band in the face of James, Kirk and Cliff were thinking of sacking Lars around after MoP, Tragedy struck and Cliff died. Then, Jason, seen in vid, joined Metallica, and this is not even 3 years after Cliff died, so there was no plans of stopping and no looking for new members as they almost were left with just two guitars - an imperfect vocalist and rhythm and an imperfect lead (but what's bad about being imperfect? Metallica made their shit WORK). After what happened, they went on their second longest band formation, with Jason on bass for 13 years (Cliff played for 4 and Robert now plays longer than both for 20)
I love how she just picks this song live from 1989 and trying to hide her love for thrash metal. The music is an homage to hp love craft and his works. Stephen king once described him as The Godfather of all modern horror. To be honest in my opinion knowing that makes the song so much more enjoyable

One day in the states I thought I’ll never see my heroes in person. Summer of ‘17 when I was still in the Air Force with my bro we see they’re coming close by, at the perfect timing. En route, my brother drove my car and blew my left front tire 45 min into the 2 hour trip. Surely we would miss them. Found a discount, I took the wheel and hauled ass, and we made it as the first opener played. Your time will come friend. Just stay on point with their dates, whenever they may be in the future, but Metallica will continue to continue. I have no doubt.
Drain you of your sanity, face the thing that should not be. Lyrics based on the writings of H.P Lovecraft. If you read his horror stories, in madness you'd dwell.
I've been waiting for you to cover Metallica for a while. James Hetfield is my favorite musician in the world. This was in 1988. He actually started vocal coaching right after this tour because I think he realized that he needed it to prevent him from not being able to continue.
I'm a fan since 85', James, Cliff, Kirk and Lars are the definition of Metallica, imo. And I always like and respect James because of what he's been through and what he is capable of. To me, James is one of the most awesome and most interesting person I ever come across🤘🤘🤘
This brings back a ton of memories. Queensryche opened up for them. It was right before MindCrime went big. Metallica was flawless. They literally tore the place down. One of the light towers came loose and was swinging from the stage rigging. They never skipped a beat and kept on killing it.
I always enjoy your reaction videos, and this one is no exception. Metallica has been my favorite band for thirty years now, so I found this one especially enjoyable. Some information on James and his voice: he blew out his voice recording a B-side track (a cover of Anti-Nowhere League's "So What") for the album after this (the eponymous "Metallica", known more widely as "The Black Album"). He did vocal rehabilitation, and ever since then he has so far as I know followed a strict regimen of vocal exercises/warmups before every show. You may find if of interest that after "...And Justice For All" (the tour for which spawned this video), James learned to actually SING, as opposed to simply "yelling in key" as he once described it. This was first heard on the tracks "The Unforgiven" and "Nothing Else Matters" from the aforementioned Black Album, but I think it is best showcased several albums later on a song called "The Unforgiven III". I would recommend you check out (and possibly do a reaction video for?) a song called "Spit Out The Bone" from their latest album, "Hardwired to Self Destruct". I was pleased to see him return to "yelling in key" on the heavier numbers from that album, but "Spit Out The Bone" features a passage where he uses his **singing** voice right in the middle of one of their heaviest and fastest songs, and the effect is pretty damned cool. Sorry about the long comment, but I'm a musician myself, and perhaps the only thing I enjoy more than talking about music in general is talking about my favorite band. Keep up the good work, and I look forward to seeing more videos from you in the future. Cheers.
Since you asked, I was not at THIS gig, but I did see them 3 times on this tour. This performance was the standard not the exception. Loved your reaction. Thanks for that!
Rebecca, if you ever get the chance to see them live....dont pass up the experience. They are still tight and their stage show is un real! I just saw them for the fourth time since 1986 two years ago. Promise you wont regret it!
James Hetfield never ever claimed to be a good singer. In fact that plan was always to replace him. I wonder how that’s going? 🤔 😂 get well Pappa Het. Your Metallica family loves you.
James's iconic vocal sound was actually a very improper and damaging use of his chords resulting in him eventually blowing his voice out around the time they released the black album and forcing him to re-learn how to sing properly and without his classic rasp, with a vocal coach. Thus his vocal tone changed quite a lot after that. Compare his vocals from the puppets album to anything after the black album to hear.
The thing I love about this song is that it's all an anecdote for H. P. Lovecraft's mythos. The "thing that should not be" likely refers to Cthulhu, especially with that one lyric famously taken from Lovecraft's stories: "Not dead which eternal lie, stranger eons death may die," a play on the quote "that is not dead which can eternal lie, and with stranger eons even death may die". Other parts of the lyrics are also references, such as "crawling chaos underground" (a reference to Nyarlathotep, a deity in Lovecraftian mythos referred to as the "Crawling Chaos") and "out from ruins once possessed, fallen city living death" (a reference to R'lyeh, the underwater dead city that is home to Cthulhu). It's one of my favorite Metallica songs just because of how much I like reading Lovecraft's stories.
When she says "I haven't noted him doing any vibrato yet," he has done a couple notes vibrato earlier in the video. James has always used vibrato selectively, making it more powerful when he does use it rather than some singers that way over do it and keep it constant throughout a whole song. James definitely does vibrato more often these days though, especially live, and I think that's partially because he has lost some of the grit and rasp he could get when he was young.
I think you'd be impressed with James's performance on No Leaf Clover with the San Francisco Symphony. The whole band actually. As us Mexicans say it.....sheck it out!🤪
Unless I'm mistaken, about a year later James would blow his voice out singing a cover of the song "So What" in the middle of recording the Black album. After the Black album he never sounded like this again. He's still aggressive but most of the rasp is gone.
Kirk Hammett (what’s he doing with his fingers) the two fingers down we’re holding/grabbing the wammy bar on his guitar while the other 3 were holding the pick. Hendrix use to do this too, actually a lot of great guitarists do that for speed and blend ability of the tones.
Uhhh no he's not. He's just using the side of his pinky to run along the strings. If you start at 8:23 and watch, you'll see the pick never touches the strings and the whammy bar is hanging down away from his hand lol
They are actually the biggest metal/rock band of all time, and yes, they are still going, they just released an album called Hardwired To Self Destruct in 2018 and have plans to release another, though noone knows when lol...James Hetfield was a beast on vocals during this tour and for at least the next 3-4 years, but as far as raw vocal and energy, I don't think he's ever had the same intensity live as he did during this tour, maybe sporadically, but they tour 2 to 3 years straight, that's a lot of strain on any vocals, great reaction though. I would recommend finding this particular show in it's entirety online that this song came from, it's in the title: Seattle '89...great show and intensity all the way through.
This song gets me so ridiculously pumped!!!! The gravel and harshness in Hetfields voice is immense!! Its Not ' Nothing Else matters' but its in my top 5 Metallica songs
Metallica is THE reason (and maybe Motley Crue as well) that I got into metal. I grew up as a kid in the 80's and had an older brother who was into Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, Megadeth, etc. James blew out his vocals in the early 90s, so clearly he was not singing safely technique-wise. Because of that his vocal style is very different now, but that's how he's endured 30 years of touring. His best "post-blow out" album is Load, and his best vocals ever in my opinion are "The Outlaw Torn" from that album. Really recommend watching the Joe Rogan episode with James Hetfield from like 2016, it's awesome lol. Also you're great, and my favorite reaction channel on UA-cam just because you're so quirky it's adorable. Also the best part is that you seem to ENJOY doing these videos, I watch a few others and people seem to be on some kind of burnt out auto pilot and it's kind of forced.
There's something remarkable about the melody's choice of notes in the chorus. It's comparable to dramatic scoring in soundtracks by e.g. John Williams when descibing a devastating or gloomy highlight in a narrative. The interaction of melody + the chord relations is everything in this song, however heavy and awesome the performance is, putting the composition into sound. Having studied a lifetime of music-phenomenology makes listening to gems like this really interesting. There's so many cool aspects to work with in this song. I think especially the build-up to Hetfields's "dwell" with the fifth step on the tritone chord (in relation to the tonic) is one of the chilliest and awe-inspiring points I've heard in metal. I've heard a lot of people say that this song kind of creeps up on you after some time of listening to the more obvious Metallica hits, but once it arrives in your mind, you aren't gonna get rid of it. There's something not too apparent going on in this composition that haunts you in ways it's hard to put a finger on (it's the impact of the way tone intervals work on us, like language). I've sweated over this song for a loooong time, and it only gets more interesting as you peel off the layers. It's a sound-movie! Metallica = legend
You should check out Metallica live Harvester of Sorrow or Creeping Death from either the '89 show or the san diego show. Hetfield goes all out on those with his vocals.

@@jedisentinel1499 85' James pure speed, 89-1993 Agressive drunk James, 1995-1999 Pretty singing voice James.
Think she needs to watch Metallica’s S&M concert to see how far they’ve come as musicians! Hetfield’s vocal performance on S&M is incredible!
Unfortunately.... the first S and M album has a slight problem, Autotune.
Such an underrated album
@@jacobnelson4150 to be fair, they tuned James's vocals on all of the albums post Black Album.
Just adds a cool kinda creepy and menacing effect to the music. It’s easier shown than explained though lol
Perry D it was a wah and a flanger. Just like they used a flanger at the beginning too
@@cullertransportation similar to Call of Ktulu when Clif did the wah flanges
@@devonmills1968 exactly, but more notable would be when cliff did the intro to bells with a distortion pedal and a wah. dude was so far before his time. the jimi hendrix of the bass R.I.P.
@@cullertransportation you're right recently I've gone back to the old albums to try and focus on his bass more because I never gave it enough attention
@@devonmills1968 not many people did, because it's so hard to do by ear, he mimicked guitar parts and guitar lines so well it was hard to tell without tabliture what he did or what was a James or Kirk guitar part. that is still something that is hard to do even with their later stuff with them doing so many harmonized guitar lines. looking at the tabs you could see a song with 8 guitar lines but 6 of them could only be a couple bars long. so many people diss this band but if they were to really sit and study their music like that they would see how much genius there is to their songwriting approach.
Cliff taught them well. they knew how before him but you can tell from ride the lightning on down that he and kirk taught Lars And James well.
Lol picks the heaviest Metallica song . And James hetfield is drunk 😆
In my opion Heaviest are Sad but True, Leper Messiah and The Dhortest Straw :D
at that point, when WASN'T he drunk

*SECOND PART* ua-cam.com/video/Pw8jRIjVVdU/v-deo.html
Definitely not the heaviest
The micro transitions from soft to heavy vocals in the “1-2” verses (not chorus) James does are so raw and unique. “Hybrid children watch the sea(soft) - pray for father roaming free (Heavy)” and this continues for every “1-2” of the song

So suckers like you watch her channel
Yes. Metallica are still recording and touring. They recently did a big concert at Slane Castle in Ireland. Check out the videos from that on UA-cam. Please give us a reaction on how his voice has aged. Thanks angel.
I'm going to go see them October 31. It's been about ten years since the last time they came to NZ.
His voice turned shit in 8-9 years
@@ninodjuras It seems to have improved somewhat in the last decade however
Saw them a few years ago in Philly, his voice was fine. Really good show actually, the sound setup was on point. Really loud, but clean. No problem hearing the vocals at all, which is usually an issue at those sort of shows.
@@ninodjuras U r fuking wrong
I'm happy that you are so open-minded to music and musicians and that you see the real deal of some artists. just like the james hetfield expression. This guy just looks like he could jump at you at any time and rips your chest apart xD
This Voice and expression in combination with the music is why metallica is a pretty hard metal band.
When you mentioned the guitar "screaming" was trying to remember if you've reacted to Pantera's "Cemetery Gates"
That part of this solo is so good. Of course it does remind me of cemetery gates too. Epic songs
"Master Of Puppets" from the same Seattle 89' show. The best recorded performance of that song to date.
Any song from that show is the best recording of it.🤣
@@andrewkennedy9704 very true. All of them were at their best.
Yeah, Puppets was the best vocals during this show. everything else was just Het roaring *"YEEEAAAUUHHHH!"*
I don’t think James Hetfield ever thought this much about what he was doing vocally. He just got up there and growled. He was far more into his guitar playing.
Yeah all these reaction people over think metal.
After what happened, they went on their second longest band formation, with Jason on bass for 13 years (Cliff played for 4 and Robert now plays longer than both for 20)
It isn't theatrics, it's Thrash.
"...A way of life, a fire inside..."-Dave Mustaine
Well, the ajfa tour had some theatrical elements in shows like the scenography
please nooooo not HIM AGAIN, whyyyyyyyyyyy???
I love how she just picks this song live from 1989 and trying to hide her love for thrash metal. The music is an homage to hp love craft and his works. Stephen king once described him as The Godfather of all modern horror. To be honest in my opinion knowing that makes the song so much more enjoyable
this is the most posh british reaction to the most rude-sounding (while not being such) american dude screaming the hell out of his vocal cords, ever. and I do sincerely appreciate it, don't I.
keep going Rebecca!
Talking about the music, he is rude af.
Talking about the personality, i dont think so
metallica still rules!
Here after Metallica Canceled their tour in Australia. One day I'll hopefully see them. Get well Hetfield
you sure will, he'll be fine cause it's Papa Het after all. Once you do, enjoy your time!
Fucken oath mate, same!! I was devo!!!!! Im from S.A , where u from mate?
@@Only_Cans_101 Im from SA but live in QLD now
One day in the states I thought I’ll never see my heroes in person.
I saw them in the UK on their 'and justice for all' tour in the 80's, totally amazing live! Hope you get to see them too :-)
Drain you of your sanity, face the thing that should not be.

We officially watched James Hetfield screaming to a vocal coach.
I've been waiting for you to cover Metallica for a while. James Hetfield is my favorite musician in the world. This was in 1988. He actually started vocal coaching right after this tour because I think he realized that he needed it to prevent him from not being able to continue.
AJ ZATHRACK yeah right after the Justice tour.
Seattle 89
I'm a fan since 85', James, Cliff, Kirk and Lars are the definition of Metallica, imo. And I always like and respect James because of what he's been through and what he is capable of. To me, James is one of the most awesome and most interesting person I ever come across🤘🤘🤘
When artists were artists !! No autotune, No computerized auto note strings. No scripted expressions.

You should absolutely listen to "Low man's lyric" by Metallica.
It's a great contrast from a song like this.
Or Mama Said.
My thought exactly
CUZ LOW MAN IS DUEEEEEEEE
wow Rebecca you looking soooo beautiful today
This live performance of the thing that should not be always gives me the goosebumps
It’s time for The Outlaw Torn (S&M version) 🤘🏽
Very refreshing to hear positive things about heavy metal music from someone who is extremely talented and a student of music.
At 1:08 her underwear about flew away😂
This brings back a ton of memories. Queensryche opened up for them. It was right before MindCrime went big. Metallica was flawless. They literally tore the place down. One of the light towers came loose and was swinging from the stage rigging. They never skipped a beat and kept on killing it.
Can you do a new metallica live song like "master of puppets" or "one" to compare how much different his voice is now thab what it was
@Mastodon1976 yeah ik but curious to see what voice she likes better

oh hell yes.
Any of their songs are the jam.
Cheers.
"They're very tight..." its called thrash metal for a reason

@Nick te Lindert Well not the recordings of this and last year :)
He's actually saying a story aswell, he's like the great story teller in sings hense why everyone loves him xx
4:46 I've always called it the "Hetfield Hunch"
Ha, that’s a fun name for it. I don’t know if the two things are related, but I noticed the “Hetfield hunch” was really born right after Cliff died.
Finally METALLICA!!! Thank you so much!
"look at his eyes!"

This is when James really started getting strong. He has literally improved year after year and still to this day. This was 30 years ago.🤘
...and Lars has gotten worse year after year. LOL

This is the first time I've heard Kirk Hammet's guitar playing called "Impeccable" and honestly, he's underrated. SUPER entertaining.
No foreplay needed with his voice, he just goes in dry and leaves audiences sore
Dude. O_O I don't know if I should laugh or just blush.
The dryness makes them sore

Is that why his voice sounds like it does now?
@@justawhisperintheuniverse8257 oh hell yes, he needed vocal training in the first half of the 90's cause he blew his voice
Since you asked, I was not at THIS gig, but I did see them 3 times on this tour. This performance was the standard not the exception.

James Hetfield never ever claimed to be a good singer. In fact that plan was always to replace him. I wonder how that’s going? 🤔 😂 get well Pappa Het. Your Metallica family loves you.
stubones yep he has said time and time again he never wanted to be the singer he just wanted to play rhythm guitar
Of Wolf and Het.
Dave Mustaine should have replaced him lol
Funkymango with that horrible voice? No thank you. Even though that almost happened
Let's face it, Metallica is awesome. They always were and always will be. They've solidified their space in this world.
Gunube: They always were awesome and they always will be.
72 Seasons: Were.
Check out the live version of Bleeding Me when James exposes his soul.
This is the wrong song for James' vocals. Listen too Master of puppets live seattle 1989 for the real deal. In my opinion anyway.
I think this is Seattle 89 but there are so many good songs from the set
This is Seattle 89 I believe
@@nathatndennis4490 It is
100% agreed, that's the song that always comes to mind first when I think of this show
I think Puppets and Harvester from the same era.
Miss gigs like that. Real metal, friends, beers and everyone enjoying the songs on fire. Nowadays just iphones and kids with ear protector.
I think you'd be impressed with James's performance on No Leaf Clover with the San Francisco Symphony. The whole band actually. As us Mexicans say it.....sheck it out!🤪
3:14 yeah, that’s a pretty good way of describing James Hetfield.
Unless I'm mistaken, about a year later James would blow his voice out singing a cover of the song "So What" in the middle of recording the Black album. After the Black album he never sounded like this again. He's still aggressive but most of the rasp is gone.
I noticed you particularly enjoyed the bass player, Jason Newsted.
What if I told you that he was drunk this whole performance
his entire career*
The entire Seattle 89 concert is awesome and one of the very best performances Metallica ever made.
I love when you become a metalhead. James doesn' t use the vibrato. He roars like a Lion
James is actually a great singer. React to some of their ballads, like Nothing Else Matters
You should check out Metallica live Harvester of Sorrow or Creeping Death from either the '89 show or the san diego show. Hetfield goes all out on those with his vocals.
You sound like one of those fake fans, who say only first four albums are good when in reality they all are save st anger
lol this guy. The first 4 are actually legit the best. black album is when everything went mainstream.
Just stumbled on your channel and have to say I love it! Your facial expressions and insight are priceless. Thank you for giving me something to smile about in these dark days. Keep up the great work.
"the thing that should not be" is a nod to Lovecraftian's pantheon lore of cthulu.
