This was our theme song during the Gulf War, with Delta co. 12th Engineer Battalion, out of Dexheim, (Devil's Home), Germany. We had four armored personnel carriers in our platoon that all had the names of Metallica songs painted on the sides. There was "Creeping Death", "Seek and Destroy", "Metal Militia" and honestly, I can't remember the last one, but I think it was "Damage Inc". We all made it back home, but we are still just empty shells.

This was released in 1986, an era of music which was all about girls and partying and falling in love... This was when hit songs were 'Take on me' (A-ha)... 'Home sweet home' (Motley Crue)... 'One more night' (Phil Collins)... 'The power of love' (Huey Lewis)... 'Be good to yourself' (Journey)... etc.
In the middle of this, Metallica's 'Master of Puppets' drops... and it's the antithesis of everything that was popular that year. Shredding guitarz... slamming drums... lyrics about insanity, death and chaos... They made Ozzy Osbourne look tame by comparison as they opened his tour that year... Bon Jovi, Kiss, Europe, Dokken, Van Halen, and Journey ruled radio and MTV... Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Ozzy Osbourne, and Dio were the heavy metal stars... but Metallica conquered all in the underground w/ thrash metal and bands like Megadeth, Exodus, Slayer, Anthrax, etc. coming behind them... Soon, the hard rock and metal bands dominated the 80's and pushed keyboard bands like Duran Duran, Flock of Seagulls, Talk Talk, and A-ha, out of commercial popularity.

The mixture of aggression, heaviness and cold, machine-like precision in the music, combined with Hetfield’s angry, bitter, shouty vocals, perfectly matches the lyrics of this song.
“You will die, when I say, you must die.” And it ain’t nothing personal. You mean nothing aside from your performance on the battlefield. Kill or be killed. That’s the true nature of war.
Mad respect to Metallica for not sugarcoating any of the horrors.

14:07: For me that song was Battery by Metallica back in 1996 or 1997. I was 11 years old and had only heard Load and the Black album at that point. I had an old boombox for a cassette player at the time. The album cover of Master of Puppets looked really cool, so I eventually bought it when I had the money. Of course the first song is Battery...it changed my life in a way that not too many other things have since then. Having never even heard of the existence of an aggressive style of music like thrash, it just about tore my head off. I'll never forget hearing that song for the first time, let alone the rest of the album.
I was completely shellshocked, at the time, I had no idea music like that even existed. I was raised semi-religious and was questioning if I should have even been listening to that type of music...but that all changed! I started thinking for myself, and over time I started really getting into thrash metal. And also that album is directly responsible for me learning to play guitar.

...for me the most brutal sentence is: "he's yours to take away..." This also appears in official vc ONE. I've seen a lot of reactions to these songs, but never heard about this small expression of how soldiers are treated after death/service... "He's yours to take away..." For me it literally means that people, who brought the soldier in lifeloosing/damaging situation actually no longer care. They are only interested in who will substitute. Who's gonna be the next disposable "hero". And thats so arogant and disrespectful.
Like if your dirty old handkerchief is used you throw it away and leave it to housemaid to take care of it...
This is very simple example of letting responsibility to pass from iniciator to "cleaning service". And thats how wars can still work as a solution to conflicts - getring rid of responsibility.
Thank you for your reaction lady.

I`ve found quite a few songs and albums that have had that effect on me...
Hearing this album for the first time did it, so did "Walk" from Pantera, so did "Dead But Dreaming" by Deicide...then there`s "Pull The Plug" by Death, "Cause Of Death" by Obituary, "Dreaming In Red" by Dismember, "The Glorious Dead" by Gorefest, "Suffer The Children" by Napalm Death, "Corporal Jigsore Quandry" by Carcass...I could go on for days, and that`s just the metal that changed my life...i`m into just about every genre of music that requires talent to make it...

Gotta remember this music was made during the Cold War and the every day threat of nuclear armageddon and mutually assured destruction. The fear was expressed in the music. I entered the Marine Corps Infantry (0352, TOW anti-tank missile gunner) in '85 and it was an everyday threat, or so it seemed at least. Thanks for another great video my friend, Semper Fidelis.

I would say the "Master Of Puppets" as it was the first song and music video I saw on TV and the one that made me feel in love with Metallica right there and then 🖤🤘

This was the first Metallica song I had heard. And it was a life changer. My buddy had a Sony Walkman, we use to listen to cassette tapes with headphones, in algebra class. I failed that class!

I used to sneak listening to that song on my Walkman at church camp lol. Also this guy on a Harley was playing it in the summer last year when the sun was setting...it was like a gift from the metal gods so to speak. One of their best songs and one of my favorites for sure!!!

I grew up on the big "4", as well as bands like Testament, Suicidal Tendencies, Queensryche, NIN, even Tori Amos, and loved all of it. Music has been such an important part of my life, it's hard to pick a song that affected me the most. I would probably go with something from early Tool. Most likely Sober. It didn't necessarily change my life, but it changed how I perceive music.

This is my all time favorite Metallica song. It hurts thinking from the soldier's POV but it also fits thinking from a bullet's POV being a "disposable hero."

This song always made me feel different for some reason. I understood why after being deployed to Iraq and one of my “other duties” beside combat medic was “personnel recovery” and found my best friend body in the tigris river. Then I understood why of disposable heroes…

Easily Metallica's most brutal song. From the riffs to the lyrics, the solo, everything is just a constant pounding and in your face (ears?) assault.

This is an amazing song. I think the first Metallica (and thus Metal) song I ever heard was Sad But True. Heard it on a road trip in 95 and when I got home I immediately started searching them out.. completely changed my musical tastes forever.
