Dog freaks out every time
🤣🤣🤣🤣
As always.

9:22 for those wondering. :)
Hmong people eat mocho pancakes as a snack in celebration of the new year. We toast mochi cakes on a nonstick pan and then dip into sugarcane syrup!
that sounds absolutely delicious!😍
Yessss
Yum! Trader Joes had an Ube Mochi pancake mix that was seasonal/discontinued. It was so delicious, I will i bought more!
YUMMY!! Thank you for sharing!
Yesss, I was just thinking that! I find it so interesting that Hmong people have used a technique similar to mochi making when the two groups of people (hmong & japanese) have lived so far from each other regionally. Wondering where that influence could've came from. :)
Emmy!! You should try making Hmong Ncuav (pounded sticky rice)!

Much love
When I went to San Jose, California in 2019 I went to the Japanese American Museum. The day I was there they were giving tours with the historical society, and there was a film called Return To Heart Mountain, about a Japanese Internment camp. In the audience that day there were camp survivors who shared their stories, including one who recalled saving and collecting their sugar and rice rations so that people could continue to make mochi and maintain their traditions. It was such a meaningful experience to hear their stories firsthand. Thanks for showing us this unique tool!
That is so neat!! Thanks for sharing!!
It's truly insane to think that the government used to have what literally equates to concentration camps for Japanese-Americans. It baffles my mind that we don't have a national holiday to remember such an atrocity done by the American government to American citizens.
@@bjrnsrensen8456 the US government is no different then any other government. They want to forget any wrong they've committed, no matter how bad it was.
It's an awful thing. I didn't even know that this happened until years after I got out of high school. It's infuriating.
It is yet another shameful part of usa history.
I dont call atrocities by their sanitised names. As you said those camps were concentration camps and no sanitised name or purposefully forgetting of those atrocity can gloss that over. I wish the American Japanese would insist on a memorial day for this part of their heritage. I wish all Americans would insist on this. We shouldn't have to only fight for each of our group's rights. We should all be doing things and fighting for each other and together.
You're blessed to have heard a survivor's account. As difficult as that must have been for them and you listening.
Thank you for sharing.
There actually is a day among the Japanese American community that we use to commemorate the camps, which is February 19th. It's the day FDR signed the order that authorized their imprisonment. If you look "Day of Remembrance" with Japanese Americans, you should be able to find it.
Emmy is the human version of mochi. A lovely thing that all people love and adore.
Yes. Pretty on the outside and sweet inside.
Aww so sweet! *Like mochi!* , *sighs* ik im not funny
And....can choke people to death if she wants to? 😏
@@RadenWA only if u don't chew properly?
She's so stinking cute!!✨💚
To whoever is reading this, May all the goals that you have set for yourself in the near future attain success in the upcoming year itself! Happy New Year. 💞
How nice of you. The same to you.
Happy New Year to you as well! 🥂
thnk you you too!!!!!!!!!!!!
Happy New Year!!!!!!!
happy new year to you too
Who else wants that cute kitty dish?
Plus the mochi.
Buonissimi
Oh gosh. If I bought that machine, my diet would end up being 50% mochi.
I so want one, not sure where to go that trustworthy. The amazon link in the description says unavailable. The few I see are around ~$300(is that normal?)
I really want one but here in Australia I'm looking at over $500 which no way can I afford.
If I bought it, me and my kids would be eating nothing but mochi just to afford it.
@@Gamemaster-64 it seems to
Nothing wrong with that 😂
I had a similar thought watching this.
U need to try the Filipino dessert bili-bilo made with mochi balls in coconut milk with jackfruit , tapioca balls, and sliced banana/plantain rounds
Yum.
Now I want some Biko
That sounds delish!
It takes a lot of balls to make that dish.
Oohhh I wanna try that too
Gentle reminder for everyone trying Mochi: please take small bites and chew thoroughly, because just this New Year’s Day eight people in Tokyo choked on mochi, with one death. Be careful if you aren’t used to how chewy and sticky it is!
Thank you so much for this 🙏🏼 always important to stay safe when trying new things
Thank you so much for the warning, will be making sure my family do exactly that :)
I'm glad I grew up on taffy, we got the same warnings so it's so easy for me to eat mochi.
Do you people not spit?
@@plaguemarine7767 mochi is covered in starch sonit can be pretty drying on the moutg
Emmy, as I looked up the mochi maker, I kept seeing bread machines pop up. So I searched to see if anyone has made mochi in a bread machin, & apparently LOTS of people have!! I would love to see you make mochi with a bread machine & see how it compares! (Also, it seems some have had luck using a stand mixer?!)
I just looked at the same thing! I have a bread machine already and I'd love to test it out but I'm a little scared it will ruin my machine 😬
Yes! I need these videos because the mochi machine is over $500 in Australia.
I have made it in my kitchen aid stand mixer and it worked well! Oh course the mixer doesn't do the cooking of the rice, so I did that part in my rice cooker.
@@kateri17 I would love Step by step instructions on how to make it in your kitchen aid mixer.
her exact one is about $300
My mochi machine does the same noise. My dogs go nuts whenever we use it
Do you have a link to where you got it from?
Same
It sounds like a confection oven, it’s so loud 😂
@@corrinemills sorry, my grandma got it as a gift 10-15 years ago. It was bought in Japan and it's a Toshiba model, if it helps.
Emmy put an Amazon link for the machine in the info under the vid.
This brings nostalgic memories from my childhood! My family would gather once a year for mochi making. My Great Grandmother used to pull the mochi balls by hand before we got a machine that would cut it for us. Sadly since her passing the gatherings have become few and far between.
That’s unfortunate and I’m sorry to hear the loss of your great grandmother! But don’t let the tradition die with her! If it was fun for you to experience, I’m sure it would be the same if shared with others!
Crazy how some people are the glue in their families
9:27 Emmy felt shocked, realizing that the steam buzzer is ringing.
Her reaction is so adorable
Keep pressing the time and it gets funnier and funnier
You should do tteokbokki next! I can't imagine it's much more difficult.
I second this request! :)
YAASS!!!
Yes! I've asked her to to this many times, but she never did 🙁
Yessssss!!
@Charlie
What is ttdokbokki?
Yass Emmy I loved this video! My family is related to the Koda’s through marriage and I’m so glad you were able to share their story and their rice! It makes me so happy to see the support for Koda farms!
This woman in my opinion is the Goddess of Cookery! It's always a treat to see your sun shining smiley face pop up on my screen! :D
She reminds me of Demeter
@@honeymilkbun9000 A fine choice friend!
She certainly seems some kinda scared.
Ohhhh Emmy!! I had to pause off the bat! What have you done!!? I am supposed to be in Japan for two weeks as we speak and you just showed a mochi-a-holic that THERE IS A MACHINE THAT CAN HELP ME MAKE IT! **Fan girl squeal** Bless your heart and all your parts! 🤣 Now I have to figure out a way to buy it and say it's not a want but a need in my fragile state of missed Japan trip. You think that will fly? LOL Happy New Year! Ok back to our regularly scheduled Emmy fun time!
I just read that people have been able to make mochi with bread making machines as well! I may give this a try, as you can find brand-new bread machines in thrift stores, while the mochi machine is $350+! Yikes!
Get it!
Edit: 350$ for pounded rice?! Try the bread machine. 🤣
I bought one in Hawaii 20 years ago and brought it home as my carry on.
Thanks for the addition of the family history of the farmers. There's still people who don't realize America put Japanese families into interment camps.
Much like how every country does that to everyone else.
I absolutely appreciate everything you do. The way you stay humble. The way you don’t act like your perfect and show your mistakes. The way you say “that’s so stinking cute”. Or the way you get scared from a mochi machine buzzing. Or the burps you add in your vids. We are all human, and I feel like you share your true self with us! It makes my heart smile. I also truly respect the fact that you keep your family out of the videos and leave that part of your life personal. There is so much negativity in the world today,I don’t blame you for wanting to keep that away from your kiddos! Love you tons Emmy! It would be EVERYTHING to me to one day get to meet! My best friend and I just enjoy every video. We sit there and pause the video, predict what you think something will taste like or what the texture will be and then play the video. Most of the time we are pretty accurate. Thank you for being the bright side of my days! This past year has been tough, starting by loosing my dad last January to stage 4 lung cancer. Much, much love and light your way, all the way from Knoxville,TN! 💜
I like mochi, but not as a dessert. I prefer it in the New Year's soup where it gets looser when in contact with the hot broth. Love your channel since I found you reviewing 7/11 food from Hawaii.
I love how respectful she is
"I'll be back in YAAAAH! guess I'm back. 😂😂😂😂😂
Wow. I remember eating those little rice erasers with seaweed and soy sauce when I was a kid. Haven't had one of those things since the 1970's!! Gonna have to search for them at HMart.

I almost forgot it's New Year's eve. Happy New Year to you Emmy, and to everyone reading this.
Happy New Year to you too John Smith.
Hey John, I hope you have a wonderful 2021! Happy New Year!
In the Philippines they make palitaw. It's the sticky rice flour made into little pancake disc and boiled. When it floats to the top you take it out and cover it in sweetened shredded dry coconut. Sprinkle it with toasted sesame seeds and it's done. It's something we eat during New Years Eve and into New Years.
Thank you Emmy for being such an incredibly kind and consistent source of comfort to us all this year. I am immensely grateful.
Emmys jump at the timer scared me more than the timer 😂🤣😂 everyone got a suprise there!! 🖤♥️❣️
That crunch sounded straight out a potato chip commercial 🤣
Thank you so much for sharing the story of the Koda family! I am going to be even happier buying their products from now on.
Yay! 👏🏼
Emmy, you've made this last year almost a joy(for a little time at intervals). I wait for each new visit. Happy NEW Year to all, and you and your family. Ohio.
happy new year to everyone around the world ( from belgium here)
Same to you from Utah, United States.
Happy New Year to you as well! (from Southern California)
Anyone else get super excited when she starts explaining exactly how anything tastes??
You unlocked a deep forgotten memory I had! My mom used to make kiri mochi for me for breakfast and it was delicious!
Idk the exact recipe but I know she made it with a glutinous brown rice, soaked raisins, which got mashed with the rice, cinnamon, vanilla, and I think some other spices too. She'd toast it in the oven then add cream cheese. Yum!
Thank you Emmy for making these great videos! We did our annual 'Mochi Tsuki' just a few days ago to bring in the New Year. i am in my 70's and still keep this one tradition alive. Now, my grandson is learning how. i appreciated your mentioning the Koda Farms story and the fact of the ''internment camps' disrupting the entire farm. My family and all relatives and friends of Japanese ancestry were in the concentration camps. After re-settling their lives, this tradition was once again carried on. One of my fondest memories growing up was the annual 'Mochi Tsuki' with relatives. We used the old style wood mallet and wooden bowl for the pounding. What a fabulous time! Now, its our trusty ol' Tiger :-) Thanks again: you are adorable!
I love so much that when you screw up that you’ll post it because most of us always do at some point .You have the best channel ! Happy New Year Emmy!
I’m up at 6am after having spent the last 12 hours moving out of my apartment, and watching Emmy just gush about Mochi has been the highlight of my day ❤️
emmyyyy happy new year, thank you for this GIFT, i wish you all the most beautiful things the universe has to offer you this year, and thank you for including yourself being startled by the machine cause that was GOLD
I found your channel this year!! Absolutely love them.. I love how calm and chill and just likable you are..
What an "alarming" episode! 🤣 Love you Emmy! I rewound that scene once. Or twice. Lol!! Happy New Year! 🎆🕯️🥂

Happy new year, Emmy. Thank you so much for your videos in 2020, they brought a lot of smiles to my face in an otherwise tough year 💖 wishing you the very best for 2021 🥂
Thank you for the continued entertainment AND education! Your channel was one of my mainstays during quarantine (I’m still in isolation because of my health conditions.) You were one of the reasons I was able to stay (relatively) sane! 😂
Cant wait to see what your channel brings to us in 2021!!!!
I just love watching Emmy because she eats everything and aren't afraid to show her mistakes. That makes her so real!
Happy New Year to you and yours. Here’s to 2021 being everything that 2020 wasn’t
I am 48 yrs old, my grandmother would make mochi for me when I was little....I used to like watching it puff up too!!! She would cut them into tiny squares and fry them, then toss them in soy sauce! For years I thought this was popcorn😆😆 until I was old enough to go to the movies, I was mad as hell they didn’t have grandmoms popcorn!! Then she we would make it with the red beans🤤🤤🤤🤤Omggggg!!!! Happy New Year!
THANK YOU SO MUCH, EMMY!!!! I used to be a nanny & the mother would bake (store-bought from the freezer section, iirc) 'mochi' & I loved it fresh out of the oven with just a bit of salt sprinkled on top. After they moved, I would look for mochi, but only find the ice cream filled version. HOWEVER, thanks to you, I now have a better term to search for! Thank you again! (If I thought I'd eat it more often, I'd consider the machine...maybe if my kid ends up liking it too, once I locate more...) I'm so excited that I might actually get to eat it again!
Can you make butter mochi? That has to be my favorite kind. Reminds me of cassava cake. I’m Filipino :)
Because of you I am going to make some tomorrow. Love butter mochi!
happy new year from south africa, can't wait to see more videos from you emmy
Happy New Year Emmy and to all. Let's hope that 2021 is better. Emmy, I love your videos and the ones with slight bloopers in them crack me up. Please keep them coming!!!
Happy New Years emmy i Love you so much and your the sweetest and most wholesome person on youtube and no drama ❤❤❤
Happy new year everyone! 🥳
Re: the miso hook, pure guess but is it meant for gently mashing the soybeans after you soak and cook them, or incorporating the salt and koji? My expertise (lol) comes from making miso with the actual experts at Miso18ヶ月, and at that time we just mashed the hell out of the soybeans in a plastic baggie and mixed by hand. The process is so simple though I don't know what else you could even get a machine to do besides the mash-and-mix. I hope you get to give it a try!
We typically pound mochi for New Years at our house but because of COVID we needed to cancel that. (Typically we have about 50 or so people coming and going throughout the day.) My mom decided we needed to buy a mochi maker but we bought the Zojirushi one because at that time (end of November) we couldn't find one anywhere. Love that thing. We used it twice and it's sitting in the living room right now in the box because my dad said there's no reason to put it away just yet. LoL
Happy new year!!!
My son and I almost dropped our tablet to get to the video. HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!
Happy new year everyone!! 🥳 Let’s all hope for a better year in 2021. If you see this, know that you are loved and I care about and hope you have a better year. This year was probably the worst year we’ve all lived through, but we made it! Also-a weird thing my friend told me is to think about 2021 as “2020 won.” So accurate though! Love you all. 🥰
Ew why do I literally sound like a Facebook mom in this 🤮

Thank you for this Emmy. Today is a hard day. I got a call that my best friend of 20 years died. I’ve been crying for over 5 hours and I can’t stop. The kids and my husband are very distraught. She was a HUGE part of our family. And out of nowhere she is gone. She had a blood clot in her leg that she didn’t even know about and it spread to her lungs. The other day she was going to her car and she coughed and the clot exploded and hit her artery/ she hit the cold, icy snow filled pavement and died instantly. Not the way I wanted to end or start a new year. Please pray for us and her family. Thank you. Happy New Year to you all 🎆

@@jenniferpearce1052 I don’t. I wish I did. Sometimes when my mochi gets too dry I break it up into little pieces and deep fry it. You can add any flavor like soy sauce or, my fav, powdered sugar
