My mother would make kirimochi for every New Year and we would have it with miso soup. She had that very same machine. That buzzer is so penetrating! This of our first year without her. It was very nostalgic to watch you make it here.

My condolences. I've purchased the kirimochi from Amazon and it's quite tasty as long as it arrives intact. You can honor your Mother still even though it may not be homemade. 🥹💕

Thank you for your kind remarks. Cancer of any kind is a painful thief that steals indiscriminately. It took the lives of both of my parents. All I can say to that is that for the sake of your loved ones DON’T write off ailments as things that will pass when they seem to linger. Get them checked out. Death is inevitable but it doesn’t have to be take down the ones you love.

If anyone wanna try to do this but don't have the Mochi machine, you can use your bread machine/maker. It can also "pound" cooked rice but I think you might need to cook the rice in your rice cooker first because I don't think you can use bread machine to cook rice.

A friend of mine who lived in Japan for a while, taught me how to make a version where you fry the squares of mochi with a bit of soy sauce, maybe a touch of sugar, and sesame oil, and brown it on both sides, and then scoop it into nori. the texture is startlingly like a grilled cheese sandwich. Really good with a few toasted sesame seeds....I now have to make this again XD

I love that for a unitasker it comes with EVERYTHING you need other than the perishable products. I mean just including a rolling pin got me! I have a real pet peeve for products the require me to have an endless supply of other utensils or items just to be able to use the basic function of their item.

@@silentshadow867 It does work with a dough hook, but make sure the quantity of rice you put in does not over-tax your machine. We had to make "mov ci" for my mother's funeral (tons of it) and it started to emit a strange odor. Took a long time for it not to smell when I used it, so it does the job, just be careful.

💛...my five uncles and one auntie and their spouses (spice?) would get together at this time of year for the mochi making at gramma's place...it was an uber-labor-intensive operation that we all looked forward to... nowadays, even with store-bought mochi, it invokes cherished memories of a bygone era...the rice was steamed over a kettle of boiling water, stoked by an oakwood fire, which was used to roast our wienies after the rice was done... whenever i sense a oak log burning, this is where i go...

Now where my grandparent came from we made round mochi patties instead of the rectangle mochi. Even had my ozone soup, The way I cook my mochi is in a cast iron frying pan. Love mochi with shoyu and nori strips like you.

I use kirimochi as a glutefree pizza dough option. I put a few pieces in a oiled pan, fry them until they start to puff, and then I flatten them with a wet wooden spoon so they'll stick together and create a tortilla-sized ring. Then when the bottom gets crispy, I top it with pizza sauce and topping, pops it under the broiler for a while, and boom! Perfect Pizza.

I usually put a thin layer of cornstarch onto a cookie sheet to put the mochi. I let it cool, then cut with scissors.

I loved eating kirimochi when I was in Japan! Except I went sweet instead of savory XD I would put it on top of a slice of bread (that was slathered in butter and sprinkled with sugar) and put it all in the toaster oven and have that for breakfast!

If you have one you can use a bread machine. Cook the rice and move to bread machine on dough mode.

    That’s it, that’s your next T-shirt- “Don’t choke on your mochi!”❤

I have only had mochi once with a bit of ice cream stuff. It was good. I kinda want to make it because I like making things that most people think that they can't make at home, like dark chocolate. I have made that, inspired by Emmy . Sorry if my grammar isn't the best I might be a bit lit.

Wow, that looked like a very angry volcano was about to explode!😄 Luckily that didn't happen though.
Best wishes for the coming year and may it be better than the last year.
