the scary/sad part of family businesses (especially ones that are engrained in tradition and heritage) is that it only takes one person for it to all end.

Family business can be both a blessing and a curse. You will always have the stability and don’t ever have to think how to make ends meet. At the same time, if you have a gift that goes outside the realms of the family business (specially being from a japanese family) and one wishes to pursue that aspiration then a lot of drama will ensue.
Well you don't necessarily have stability - you have to change with the times or die like the businesses around your's did. Change too much and too fast and people complain, you always have to thread that needle. However in Japan businesses have been handed down outside the family, like in the bladesmithing business. Technically the new person is 'adapted' and becomes the next generation owner. But yeah, no freedom to be you.
g e o idk about stability part but yeah I agree, all it takes for the business to end is someone along the family line that doesn’t want to take over the business, which it is his choice
I think the OP means there's always something to fall back to. Mochi isn't going away any time soon so you won't starve and be out of job if you have this business. You won't necessarily have a successful one that's stable without a lot of effort -and even then that's not granted-, that's for sure.

We only make about 700 lbs. but it takes us from 3:00 am till 11:00 am to finish all the rice. This shop goes every day! The mochi taste different from the factory made ones simply because it is made by hand. Like mom's cooking versus one that comes from a can.
I am a 68 year old Japanese American. When I was young all sides of our family would get together and make Kochi in my grandfather's barn for New Years. Those days died out with my grandparents. Really sad. We've been able to get mochi in San Francisco and San Jose but, sadly, those shops are now closed or closing.

I’m proud of mochi business thriving abroad. So glad that it will be passed on to his son and still continue. Protecting and passing on tradition is very important. I’m disappointed that not only is many confectionary incorporating automation and less hand involved but mochi are made out of geletifier and fillers and some even uses artificial sweetener because it keeps mochi from getting hard. But mochi need to be hard and the toasted mochi is also divine. Keep up the great work! But, could you please make non “artificial”colorant mochi?
I order at least once per month, Rainbow dango and I’ll order 6 or 7 packs along with some rice cakes. It costs about $60 for shipping but it’s completely worth it! I live in Fresno County and it costs more to ship than what I purchase. That’s how much I love it!
I went to Fugetsu-do this summer after seeing this video. I was very excited to go there and try their mochi and take some to one of my elderly aunts and family in Los Angeles. My other two elderly aunts (83 and 89) were with me. One of them is the mother of my cousin who is half Japanese. When he was little, we all used to go to Little Tokyo together. I have very fond memories. I have also lived and worked in Japan, twice. So, I have a love and knowledge of Japanese culture. Imagine my surprise when my elderly aunt sat down on a stool near one of the glass cases in Fugetsu-do (after walking throughout Little Tokyo on a hot, humid July day) and the middle-aged woman behind the counter came running out and told my aunt to get up, waving her hands at her as though she were an annoying fly. She told her she couldn't sit there and was quite rude in her manner. My aunt was insulted with reason and my other aunt and I hurried up and I bought the mochi I came for and we left. I will never go back to this place. I have traveled throughout Japan extensively in my work and in all of my travels I never, ever experienced anyone so rude. The mochi was very good, but the atmosphere generated by this self-important woman was very un-Japanese. She may be a relative, but she is a terrible ambassador for this family-run business. - Elena Pineda
Ok to be honest..... I just clicked on this video cause every time I watch a MOCHI video The comments are atleast 90% about chimchim and I love seeing ARMYS but I do enjoy the videos 😊 I purple u💜 and remember to STAY GOLD!
Came across this old video, so it would be 119 years in 2023. And...I have a box of mochi right here in front of me...well...what's left of them. I got a box of 20 mochi's and I have 2 left, couldn't wait for New Year. Probably the most well-known mochi confectionery in LA.

But mochi need to be hard and the toasted mochi is also divine. Keep up the great work! But, could you please make non “artificial”colorant mochi?
Not sure how i landed here on this page, but it was a wonderful experience. I really enjoyed this. Its an art. You gotta appreciate that.
He looks like a japanese mochi making super Mario lol
I order at least once per month, Rainbow dango and I’ll order 6 or 7 packs along with some rice cakes. It costs about $60 for shipping but it’s completely worth it! I live in Fresno County and it costs more to ship than what I purchase. That’s how much I love it!

Funny how at this time, right above your comment is a Jimin joke, and right below it is about how mature the 19-yr-old sounds

Hats off to kids who take over family businesses. It's a really sweet notion.
Love visiting Fugetsu-Do everytime I'm near Little Tokyo.
I know I am not the only one thinking about Jimin . Our lil mochi💜💜😭
When you thought it was actually in Tokyo and didn’t expect their good English
*Me not realizing this is actually a shop I pass by often and even gone to once till the end of the video*
I just remember Baba Mochi and baby mochi!!!
Ok to be honest.....
I just clicked on this video cause every time I watch a MOCHI video
The comments are atleast 90% about chimchim and I love seeing ARMYS but I do enjoy the videos 😊
I purple u💜 and remember to STAY GOLD!
It's ironical how BTS made so many Love Yourself album series and yet continues to mock Black and Brown people .
Came across this old video, so it would be 119 years in 2023. And...I have a box of mochi right here in front of me...well...what's left of them. I got a box of 20 mochi's and I have 2 left, couldn't wait for New Year. Probably the most well-known mochi confectionery in LA.
this is so amazing and so cool :D I wish there were more people who would keep such precious shops going :D they are still the best :)
I need some fresh mochi now😋
I never tried mochi before ;(

I ain’t gonna lie the 19 year old is hot and shy ♡
Ever since I visited this store in ‘79 I’ve wanted to learn how to make mochi. Theirs is so delicious. I had no idea how unique this shop is!
In a few years, this is going to a million views due to UA-cam algorithm
A few years as in 2019 to 2020? Half way there already
Years go by fast, huh?
MNova B we’re a littttttle far from a billion there buddy. The different between one million and one billion is roughly about a billion difference.
I read the title wrong. I thought it said, "How This 116-Year-Old *Man* in Little Tokyo Makes Mochi" XD

So glad to see the new generation will be taking over this tradition. That is no easy task. However it is worth it.
