- Our Helios 44-2 arrived, so we had to go and grab some quick test shots at the beach!

Modern cameras and vintage lenses are a match made in heaven, the sensor shows them at their best while having focus peaking and the ability to digitally process the results. And they're as cheap as 30-50 bucks if you go with a separate - again super cheap - mount converter. What a time to be alive :)
It's insane! We have a cheap Canon 50mm FD that also just produces such amazing results!
@@foreignstudio Photographers of the past must be grinding their teeth at their once premium priced lenses now being handed around on ebay for pocket change :D There's so much to choose from, from the Takumar series to the lengthily named Zeiss ones and beyond!
Hi, what budget lenses would you suggest?
There's lots of cool ones, Super Takumar 55mm in many many versions, Carl Zeiss Biotar 58mm are among the most famous ones. Make sure they don't have defects, fungus etc. @@ollh4839

Yup great Lens and i have one Helios 44-2 58mm f2
I have one sitting only need an adapter. Although i’ve read some things about fungus. Could this possibly damage my A7 IV? Or should I just do it 😅

Just amazing!!! I'm in Lisbon shooting with different lenses and I used a carl zeiss 19mm the entire time but tomorrow I'm gonna use the helios that i brought along. I forget how beautiful that cheap lens is. Now I'll never forget after watching your video and what amzing colour grading sir! Awsome!!

Are those shots wide open? I noticed that wide open my copy of this lens is very soft and kind of milky with low contrast. When stopped down to 2.8 and more, the contrast and sharpness is good.

Two or three shots are really good but some are really wasted, i think you can do great, if you will work on your framing and composition, and colour grading is no doubt amazing. All the best brother 💯

Did you have to shoot your 4k footage in 1080p due to the crop on the a7iv? I’m ordering this lens but will want to slow some of the footage down, I’m presuming the 4k 60 would ruin the ‘look’ of the lens?
This was shot in 4k 25fps no crop - the crop is only applied to 50fps/60fps - We haven't tried shooting with it in 4k 50, will give it a bash and post some tests! :)

Beautiful footage! Just wondering, did you stop down because my Helios lens has crazy swirly bokeh everywhere.
Yeah we had to! Even with a 6 stop ND, the sun is powerful in Africa! 😂
Amazing cinematography, is the lense rehoused within a housing unit or are you shooting directly from a adaptor and the lense.
Also would you mind telling me your experience when it comes to focusing, wether its photography or filming, is hard, easy ect ect.

It is just the lens and adapter, no rehousing.
the focusing isn't to bad, but if you use it with a follow focus it becomes nice and smooth, more control.
i just copped the lense, so i appreciate the words of advice, and quite relieved i don't have to spend a couple grand on housing.

ok, first of all, the footage is marvelous, instant sub. but what id like to know is how to achieve similar effect with text as the "title" in the beginning? I can't pull it off with blur or such tools. Please can you point me into right direction?

Hey! Yes! It's a vintage lens that was first produced in like the 50s. :D
Did you try this lens vs the 44M version?
We actually want to order the 44M! But we might get the one with the cine mods like focus ring, oval bokeh and flare mod! :)
Gotcha. I think the 44-2 is also available with the cine mods. I am just trying to figure which is better 44-2 vs 44M
@@premshashi the question is what look are you after, if its the vintage look with character, then the 44-2 is the answer , the 44M is the newer version, and you should get one that says MC - multi coated so it reduces flares.
They're so cheap just buy both :P
