Here's the bottom line: practice, practice, practice. And if you feel lacking, hire someone.
For my first short, I hired a local editor I had worked with before. He did a great job. No way I could edit as well. I just wrote the story.
He likes fast cuts, close ups, good sound design, great editing, color grading.

You've just made it a lot harder for me to watch me now to watch 'normal' UA-cam content without finding it disappointing! I've no idea how much time, planning and effort went into making this short (other than a LOT) but just WOW. There are very few creators in this space making content of this quality... the shot selection, the lighting, the careful sound design, the acting, the grading all add up to an incredibly professional result.
I am genuinely in awe of skill and talent like yours and it makes your conclusion even more true... it's got so little to do with how much kit you own and so much to do with how you use it. Congratulations. That was amazing... Liked. Subscribed. Inspired!

And the story. This isn't some nerdy guy sitting at a table with a camera.
He started with a premise; what makes a cinematic look. Then fell into dynamic range, after (rightly) dismissing resolution. Then he discussed why more expensive cameras were lacking. Or were they? Finally, the conclusion that it's not the gear, it's the package, primarily the story. Casablanca, for example, was shot on 16mm, in black and white.
And he even stuck in a commercial.

    This is bloody brilliant.
The epiphany of this realization was Gareth Edwards shooting his film, “The Creator” on $3,300 Sony FX3 body…
Essentially they wanted a very small portable camera system that gave the film makers “freedom of movement”, and a system that allowed them to shoot clean files at higher ISO’s, so they could use minimal lighting for a more dramatic effect during dark scenes.
On a smaller content creator context: Chris Prouse produces beautifully cinematic outdoor/back country films with a small Panasonic LUMIX G9 kit.
There’s beautiful work being created with small Fuji kits. Small Sony (a6700 sized) kits.
Seems like all of my favorite film makers use small fairly inexpensive gear.
This makes me happy, as it makes this craft of film making and photography more accessible…

    • @TeddyRumble
      @TeddyRumble Місяць тому

The limitation is not the gear. The light source that all others mimic is, of course, the Sun.

    1. Masterpiece
That was rather interesting, thanks for the comparison in such a beautiful cinematic style, a masterpiece of art and craft, an awesome actress, a genius lighting, script and background music. The cameraman and narrator was you I assume. Better as many blockbuster movies. Man, what a preparation with all that brand props to search through and finally sticked to the board.
    2. The Other Channel
The only other YT channel creating contributions in that quality since ever is the “Media Division” channel, must watch if you don’t know it yet.
    3. Light and Lens
The light and the lens make the image. You didn’t reveal the lenses you used, did you?
    4. Missing
Interesting the A7R5 is missing on that comparison page you mentioned, as far as I got it, I always assumed it’s the same sensor. Each scene filmed to avoid that sensors rolling shutter. You truly thought of everything and rolled for the edit and final cut.
    5. Announced
Tho whom it may concern, the announced Nikon Z6 III is expected to come with a 24.2 megapixel stacked BSI sensor and RED codec.
    6. The Pareto Principle
The 80/20 rule is truly universal. If Vilfredo Pareto ever imagined how general the relation he discovered is?

Watched a lot of videos about cameras. But this is by far the most interesting I've ever seen. I really enjoyed the blending of the "Hollywood-style" "person in desperate search of an answer" scene usage with the actual content of the video's information and message itself. You would have thought you were watching an entire crime drama film in just those eight minutes. Masterfully done.

I'm frustrated, so yes, it's beautiful, you showcased your talents and it's impressive, but if we're talking about the subject of the film itself, I find it to be a mockery. On one hand, you're promoting a camera based on specifications, so you're playing their game and pushing the viewer towards consumption. On the other hand, you play the knight by telling us that it's not the equipment that matters; it's comparable to an alcohol advertisement with the disclaimer 'drink responsibly,' it's ridiculous in my sens.
I would add that the rendering of an image is not limited to specifications alone; the grain, the gradients between light and shadow, THE COLORS, the contrasts, and the sharpness are what truly differentiate between an Alexa and a Sony camera body or even between any camera designed for cinema and one designed for video...
If I may offer a piece of advice (useful, in my opinion, and not frivolous and moralizing like that of the video), if you want to create cinematic imagery (without feeling like a dermatologist every time you do a close-up), buy yourself an old Red or a PMW-F3 for roughly the same price.
I apologize for the apparent vehemence of my message; I hope you won't take it personally. I reiterate that I was impressed by the quality of your images.

    • @TeddyRumble
      @TeddyRumble Місяць тому

Good hint. Look at each frame to see how he lit it. Lighting is vital; this guy knows what he's doing. He edits well, and favors a quick style, which works for short films but can be exhausting for feature length films.
Composition, angles, all simple yet effective.
Pre-planning was critical here, and important for your film as well.

Absolutely. I’m just getting into filmmaking as a screenplay writer. I’m studying cinematography with extreme obsession. My first film is going to have a 20k budget and I want to get into Sundance with it. I’m hoping that the camera I’m going to use will be able to pull off the shots that I want. I’m studying cinematography just as much as I am lighting and coloring. If you want I would love to get your opinion on my screenplay if you’d like to read it.
