A few suggestions are; "Take Me Home Country Roads", "When a Man Loves a Woman", "Helplessly Hoping", "In the Blood", "End of the Road", and "Can't Stop the Feeling". Home Free premieres a new song/video today - the Doobie Brothers classic "Listen to the Music". Thanks Salvo, really enjoyed this! 💙🍟

Christmas in July! I love that you reacted to this now. I'm glad you are going back to some of the old ones too, they are all great. I think what they do for their videos, is that you hear the studio version so that the sound quality is great and there are no background noises. When they shoot the video, they sing along, but what you hear on the video is the studio version. At least that is my understanding.

    • @patriciamcl54

I understand that often they will sing 'half voice' so that there is an accurate depiction of what we hear.

Yes. The best way to lip synch convincingly for a video is to actually sing along; obvious flaws tend to creep in when simply lip synching as you are not thinking about making the sound as when singing.

When the record their videos, they sing along with their studio recording. Not full on belting out notes but they do sing it. That way the mouth placement and mannerisms are true. For instance, Tim's "Bass Hand" moves as he goes lower. It is unconcious and he can't control it when he sings. But you can see it there in many videos. Same with Adam Rupp's beatboxing.

It doesn't matter what you react to because they NEVER disappoint!!! Me? I really like all their fun happy songs because that's just the kind of music I like in general and they always make me smile. But if you haven't yet you might react to Do You Hear What I Hear. It was arranged by Adam and it's Phenomenal. In this video Tim is the Bass and Chris (the two on the left) is low tenor/ baritone. On the right is Austin, high tenor, Rob first tenor and Adam (the beat boxer) is a tenor. Adam has a gorgeous voice but doesn't feel comfortable taking the lead when he's not beat boxing. Chris said it's because he wasn't vocally trained like the others but to me that just means he's a natural and his voice blends so well with the others when he's doing harmony.

I think most times, they already have the song recorded weeks/months before they even start thinking about the video. So unless it's a live on tour video like "Dreamer" at the Ryman, you'll be hearing a studio version. This is usually because they tour so much they have to squeeze their videos in when-ever/where-ever they can. In many cases, they try to do several videos in a day or week. I'm sure that's why you see so many different locations in their videos all over the country and some abroad. Loved the reaction! Thx! Btw: Nobody does harmony like them. They're the masters. It's the chords they choose! Those lushes chords! 🤗
Also, may I suggest watching some of the "vocal coach" reactors who have done HF videos like Charismatic Voice. She breaks each singer down in detail and is fun to watch. Also, Jennifer Glatzhofer who does the same a little differently, just to name a couple. Both will give you details to look for and understand how they achieve their unique sound.

Adam Rupp is the only original member. His brother, Chris has a series of videos, History of Home Free, on his YT channel. Home Free Christmas shows are fantastic. Both Christmas songs and their current songs are performed in the December portion of their tour. Since the beginning, 2000, there has been a Christmas show every year in the Rupp brothers hometown in MN. Rob Lundquist, joined in 2008 is also from MN. In 2014, Christmas shows were added in Tim and Austin's hometowns in TX and GA.. Tim was part-time from 2010 to 2012 and officially joined in 2012. Austin joined at the end of 2012. When Chris Rupp left in 2016, Adam Chance replaced him and yearly Christmas shows were added to his home, Mobile, AL.

There are several live concert videos of Home Free on you tube. A "must-see" is a video taken by an audience member called "Colder Weather Memory Lapse". One that demonstrates Adam Rupp's weird sense of humour is another audience video called "BHH WWTWWS" - the beginning (Bring Him Home from Les Miz) is just gorgeous; the ending (What We're Thinking While We're Singing) t's funny as hell.

Nobody does harmonies better than Home Free. To answer your question the only me,her change since they won the sing-off in 2013 was Adam Rupp tenor/baritone ( co-founder and one with the hat in this video) left Home Free in 2016 to do solo and other projects. He was replaced by Adam Chance. The other thing that could cause confusion is the bass Tim Foust had long hair up in till 2020. During the pandemic he cut the hair shorter and stopped coloring his hair letting the grey to start showing. You might consider mixing up the new to older songs. Example for every 2 older songs mix a new one in. Speaker of newer songs Home Free is dropping new song today : LISTEN TO THE MUSIC cover of Doobie Brothers. Austin also is releasing GEORGIA ON MY MIND today. Great reaction and you have a blessed day

They have the tightest, most gorgeous harmonies of anyone. Art is subjective and everyone will prefer something different, but as far as my opinion goes, there is no one who can hold a candle to Home Free. I don't crave hearing the music of anyone else as I do Home Free. Everything they do is wonderful. I can only tell you some of my personal preferences. Blue Ain't Your Color, Folsom Prison Blues, The Driver, Forever and Ever Amen, Unchained Melody, Moonshine, Diamond Dreams, Listen To The Music, American Kids, on You Tube and Ain't Goin' Down Til The Sun Comes Up on Facebook.
Tim Foust is the bass. In this video, Chris Rupp is the baritone, (in more recent videos, Adam Chance is the baritone/bass as Chris left to do solo work) Austin Brown is the high tenor, Adam Rupp (who is usually beat boxing, is also a tenor), Rob Lundquist is the lower tenor.

I just rewatched this and enjoyed your reaction all over again. This arrangement was done by Chris Rupp (the fella in the hat). He has said that it's his favorite arrangement he ever did for them. They almost always sing over the studio version in videos. Although it would seem that the acoustics in a building like this would be great, you have to be careful about where you are in the building - and deal with extraneous noises from outside or other parts of the building or the cameraman moving around, etc. I can't remember if you ever did their version of O Holy Night. It was recorded in the same session as this one and is absolutely fabulous. That one was arranged by Tim Foust, the group's bass.

Thank you, I am enjoying your reactions. IMO the main difference between the older songs and the post-2016 ones (when Chance replaced Chris, giving an entirely new balance to the group), is that until then HF was under contract with a major label and was "forced" to stick with the stereotypical idea that tenor and bass were the voices that should be highlighted. Once the guys created their own label, they were able to choose the best lead/s for each song, and "break the mold" in both execution and composition of the songs. You never know what to expect from them, except for quality LOL! So definitely check out some of the old gems ("What we ain't got", "Crazy life", "19 you and me"', "Do you hear what I hear") but please don't neglect the new songs, especially their originals ("Love me like that", "Lonely girls world", "What's the world" to name just a couple). :)

Compared to the personnel you are familiar with, the only change has been that Chris Rupp (cowboy hat, far left on this video) left and was replaced as baritone by Adam Chance. Tim (2d left) has gone through some changes in appearance over the years, so sometimes people don't realize he is the same awesome singer. This is very prominent in Folsom Prison Blues, where he looked much different than his previous looks. While both Chris and Chance are listed as baritones, they both cover bass as necessary - not Tim low, but entirely solid for carrying the bass lines.
Also recommend thir version of Joy to the World. There is a video of them singing it at a Christmas festival, so you get it live, but they could as easily be lip-sincing, as perfectly coordinated, balanced and in tune as they are.

Regarding hearing multiple deep voices, the baritone and bass parts are sung by Chris Rupp and Tim Foust, respectively, in this song. The baritone part is between the tenor and bass parts. In studio versions they do use some additional layers so you could have multiple bass parts all by Tim. In other cases the baritone, especially with Chance now, can also cover or add to the bass part.

Chris Rupp(with the hat, brother of the beat boxer Adam) left the group and Chance came, that was in 2016. No other changes.
The bariton is the male middle voice, the bass is the lowest. In the videos with Chris he normally sang the bariton part. Since he is with the group Chance is offially the bariton and sometimes covers the bass for Tim, their regular bass singer, when Tim is singing lead
I actually love that you react to the old videos because a lot of reactors seem to skip those. Which ones you should do is for you to decide, but there is no ruling against mixing it up

  • @justkaron

the deepest voice is basso profundo, or if can't get that low ...the bass...then the baritone...then the tenor....then the high tenor. They do studio version bacause often voices are stacked or for example their basso profundo might sing bass and they will lay that down and then he will sing melody also. All kinds of things happen in the studio that 'enriches' the sound. That's why in concert, the sound won't be quite as rich. They use a looper in their concerts now to make the experience more like the studio versions. Most all bands do this now. Most all music.

If you want complex harmonies, then Voctave will blow your mind. They are an acappella vocal ensemble, with between 8 and 11 members depending on how far back the video goes, and most of them have day jobs as vocalists or voice actors at Walt Disney World. Home Free did their own arrangement on this one, I think, and the harmonies are a bit more complex than their usual because it's 5 vocal lines instead of 4 lines and vocal percussion/beatboxing. Adam Rupp is singing one of the tenor lines in this one rather than beatboxing.

They lip-sync the video's though many of these groups also record some videos at live shows but even those have the music switched to the studio one (to keep the songs consistent).
Only one change since they blew up. In this, the guy with the hat is Chris Rupp, the beatboxer's brother and co-founder. He is a baritone. Tim, the guy with him, is a bass that can climb to tenor highs. When Chris left, they added Adam Chance who sang bass for his last group but can also get up into tenor range. (low to high bass-baritone-tenor).
It's fun listening to some of the older stuff as some don't get much attention. That said, most of the songs from their Dive Bar saints album are original and they drop new content a few times a month (like a new song today on July 15th 2022).

The guy on the left with the black cowboy hat is the only baritone in the group. Tim is the bass, though with his five octave voice range, he can sing just about any of the parts. I have this song as well as Pentatonix's version of it on my A Capella Christmas Playlist. Both wonderful and totally different from each other. Home Free's is a little more serious. On your lip-synching question: The biggest drawback to recording on location is that you don't have total control of the soundscape that you do in a studio - incidental noise that you can't control (aircraft, traffic, neighbors, etc.). Plus, someplace that looks good for a video may have crappy acoustics for recording. Recording on-location is going to be a much more complicated (and expensive) process than recording in a studio. Not only do you have all of the video equipment, but all of the recording and engineering equipment to transport, set up, use, and then take down and remove. Unless you're using the location for a live recording (you aren't making or haven't already made a studio recording), the logistics and expense just don't make it feasible for the vast majority of videos.
That said, my understanding is that many of the groups actually 'sign along' with the playback recording, so that all of their mouth, lip, throat, etc. movements are real, not simply mouthing the words. What you hear in the video is still the studio recording, but the movements are all those they make when they're actually singing. That may vary from group to group, or even by person within a group, but in general they're singing along. I know that PTX has some behind-the-scenes videos where you can see and hear them doing this, I'm sure Home Free (and VoicePlay) probably also have them as well.

  • @gk5891

To the beat of my knowledge most of their videos are lip sync. Some of the stuff they do independent or as a duo or trio may be live. Their concerts are all live (except possibly some backing tracks for Adam Rupp, I know he uses multiple tracks on some videos).
Tim Foust is a Super Bass (with a 5+ octave range). Adam "Chance" is a Bass / Baritone (with a 4 octave range). So either can be singing anywhere from Bass to Tenor.

    • @jackmandu

There are no pre-recorded backing tracks used in live performances. For some songs they do use a live looping station to record some vocal and percussion parts that they then replay during the rest of the song. Those parts are recorded fresh for each performance. See a concert version of Man of Constant Sorrow for an example.

@@gk5891 No worries, I just wanted to be clear that while they do occasionally use recorded tracks in live performances, they live recordings and not a prerecorded track. Unwanted sounds, I know from experience that when you are operating a drone, they are not totally silent. The whirring sound would totally not blend with the harmonies. And when you are outside, you can't control nature and birds chirping or wind blowing can reduce the clarity of the lyrics. For Home Free requests I have a few I noticed you didn't have on the search I did on your channel. 1.Helplessly Hoping 2.In the Blood 3.God Bless the USA w/ Lea Greenwood and the Air Force Band 4.Brothers In Arms 5.Unchained Melody 6.When A Man Loves a Woman 7.From Here to the Moon and Back 8.My Church 9.End OF The Road 10.Church of the Dive Bar Saints (Christmas in July) Do You Hear What I Hear and Mary Did You Know? With Home Free you really can't go wrong no matter which part, old or new, you pull from and no matter which genre they decide to sing, it is always a good listen and uniquely their own magic.
