Yes, our Adam does do some very complicated arrangements but this is why we love him so much. This song will never be the same for me. Now when I hear someone else's version , it just doesn't sound as good. HomeFree as usual took it to a whole new level. I love this arrangement. Everyone I've heard, who knows about these things has said how technical it is. Chris (In his reaction) talks about how much brother is asking of these guys. As for Tim... zip up your jacket!! Sorry, it's the mom in me. But look at what the natives, Rob, Chris and Adam wear. 🥶🧥🔥
Another thing...Adam Rupp taught the rest of the members how to beatbox. So at their live performances you can actually see the others doing beatboxing. It thrills everyone in the audience. Also we look forward to Tim blowing out the speakers. He gets a standing ovation for that.
When Chris covered the bass for Tim if they needed a really low note while Tim is singing lead in studio they would layer Tim in Of Course live Chris would do it. Although Chris sang baritone with Home Free he is actually a low tenor. Now that they have Chance it isn't necessary because Chance can get so close as to not make a difference.
Definitely need to listen to a live version. I have a couple from Denver earlier this month and hopefully will get another from the Ryman Friday night.
This is one of the songs for which Home Free changed my whole appreciation. I think Adam's arrangement is the best arrangement of any Christmas song, ever. Never really liked it before, but now I listen to it all year. I just saw them do it in Mankato and it is just as mindblowing in person. I think we need more Adam arrangements. Happy holidays!

They aren't limited by "we only have 2 tenors", "we only have 1 bass", "we only have one beatboxer", etc. , Yes, I'm sure Darren added some effects for the recording, but from what I hear it is as impressive in person. For me one of the best arranged songs, or perhaps the best, of Home Free. So impressive! The so great leads, the beatboxing, the bass, the harmonies, the sound effects, colors, etc. in such a beautiful but cold environment. Eight years ago they recorded in Minnesota where their sound engineer and current arranger lives and works, but over time Adam Rupp has developed his own studio where he produces his own percussion and sound parts of their songs. Obviously he uses reverb, but every professional sound producer uses reverb, even with live performances. During Covid, since group members live in different parts of the country, three of the guys developed home studios where they can produce their parts from home remotely with their recording engineer, Darren Rusk, in Minnesota. Rob lives close to Darren so he just goes to his studio. Rupp produces his stuff and works with Darren to put his part together with the others. The guys just give Rupp autonomy to do what he wants to do. During live performances Rupp does his percussion and sound live and works a loop recorder to record live on the spot to repeat recurring sounds he or other group members do for backgrounds during the song.
I wish Adam would arrange more of their music. He has a gift for it. These 5 guys and their extraordinary and versatile talents and skills is almost supernatural. I wonder if they ever get tired of looking out into an audience and seeing all those "OMG faces" staring back at them. lol Their musicianship is masterful. This arrangement is so unique, complex and beautiful. Best Christmas music ever! Your reactions are always insightful and interesting. Thank you!

And the gorgeous harmonies from the other guys - & we hear a bit more of Chris too. That bit in the middle Listen to what I hear ending with Austin's E5 is amazing. Chris Rupp on his channel discusses this and said there was 4 different octaves from Tim to Austin. Check out his critique there. Absolutely amazing song.
Ah, yes, memories of Tim's "gold" making my ear protest during the live performance... HF'S version does give it a different spin on the lyrics. My favorite version; nothing else like it. Merry Christmas!
THE MASSIVE SOUND IS REAL THEY WILL TELL YOU WHAT THEY ARE USING LIKE A LOOPER WHICH TIM SAID THEY USE AT THE CONCERT WHEN THEY DO MAN OF CONSTANT SORROW BECAUSE DOUING THE JAW HARP SOUND BECAUSE IT IS SO HARD ON CHANCES VOICE
ii see them whenever they're within 250 miles of me and go to their Christmas show every year in Branson. they usually sing this song at the end of their first set. Adam sounds the same live so i don't think there is too much alteration of his vocal percussion if any. however, i can't sing my way out of a wet paper bag so my observations probably don't mean that much🙄🙄
Listen to what I say.... Four octaves progressively. :-) Then the next "Listen to what... " line is all in the same octave. Clever arranging by Adam Rupp
Almost every video song is lipsinc over a recording that was cleaned and processed. This one was discussed in one of Chris Rupp's Home Free series You Tube shows. Nornally, each voice is recorded separately and mixed for best effect. Yes, i will get some hate for this, but this comes from them. That does not mean that they can't and don't perform all songs live. The may create recorded loops to fill out the sound, but you see them, mainly Adam doing this live as well. Recorded or live, all sounds are humanly produced. Recoring Engineering can be use to clean, strengthen or balance. GREAT SOUND AND BLEND IS WHERE HOME FREE STARTS. It is just a fact. You cannot engineer your way to a great sound!
Reacting and analyzing are two different things. Your preference is valid. I subscribed to this channel because I want the detailed analysis. I prefer that he stop to share his music knowledge. As he does in all his reactions. But that’s me. Maybe this is just not a good fit for you.
I have a question first. The Home Free songs that are remakes of iconic songs, do you have a reason that you dont, or haven't, listened to the original first? I'd like to suggest Elvira by The Oak Ridge Boys. The Oaks actually were guest performers on the track, and it makes me smile everytime I watch it. Also, one of the most loved songs of the 20th century, American Pie by Don McLean. Don also guested on this one. If you would, listen to Elvira (original) first. With American Pie, just research what the meaning of all the different stories. It is mostly about the plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, Richie Valanz and The Big Bopper. But, it also goes over some other things that happened in the mid 20th century, but it's in code.
I watched a video Adam did from his home where he showed us around his recording setup he uses. He typically multi-tracks, so he'll have one track of him doing the snare part, one of toms, one of the bass drum, one of hi-hats, one of cymbals etc. Just like any recording he has a digital station where he can add any number of affects, just like 99.9999% of bands do that record. He's a good beat boxer for sure, but I wouldn't compare his live sound to his studio recorded sound, they are not the same. Anyone who thinks they are, just doesn't have big ears. Still, he's killer live. By the way, the audio your using on this sounds a little glitchy, poppy.
Someone else mentioned that video. I’ll have to look it up. Yes, I’m aware of the problem and will hopefully have it fixed by next time, sorry about that.
Chris Rupp did a review (reaction?) to this. ua-cam.com/video/zMMVRBt-LSE/v-deo.html. Home Free has to perform the songs live, so they don't do a lot of tweaking in the studio. For a live performance, see ua-cam.com/video/-K5KI5DoAqE/v-deo.html. And, if you want to know how low Tim is going, watch his "bass" hand. The lower his hand goes, the lower the note.
according to Chris, for recordings they usually overdub Tim on the lead and bass, however live is when Chris will cover bass while Tim had lead. Now with Chance, Chance can cover bass while time has lead...also both Tim and Chance hit low together and gives a very full sound they didn't have before Chance arrived.
I have a great suggestion to you for reactions. This was awesome, by the way! Please check out a young Polish prodigy guitarist (percussive fingerstyle) Marcin. Absolutely mindblowing! Really good songs to start with would be Kashmir, Moonlight Sonata and Toccata & Fugue. He does all his arrangements and writes sheet music and tabs for them as well. You won't regret, I promise! Merry Christmas!
Adam Rupp arranged this. Favorite Xmas song by them . I don't normally like Christmas music but I like Home Free's! One thing. Pretty sure you were tapping the pause button..or something. Static bits that stopped when you actually paused.
Why is it on every single reaction video, they NEVER EVER listen to the "Listen to what I say" octave progression after the bridge (Tim - Bass, Chris - Baritone, Rob - Tenor and Austin - Alto) in its entirety (at around 11:38)? They pause it over and over again and NEVER get the full effect of how wonderful it all is. They only concern themselves with how low Tim is and how high Austin gets. But it's like doing 'rounds' because they overlap their parts. Not ONCE has anyone ever said anything about that. I just don't get it.
I watched Chris Rupp react to this and he said about this spot that all of them sang in a different octave! Which is crazy!! I didn’t realize it until he mentioned it. Tim’s bass can be very distracting at times, but I agree, this part is very beautiful.
@@DanielEarnest May I make a suggestion? Follow the lead of one Vocal Coach (The Voice Love Co.) on UA-cam who does reactions where she listens to the song in its entirety FIRST, then listens to it again and breaks it down so that she can pause it whenever she needs to comment. Of course, she doesn't always do this, but when she does pause, it's at a break. This way she gets the full effect of any video without missing anything. Unfortunately, she has never done Home Free's "Do You Hear What I Hear?".
This was Adam's amazing arrangement. They say it was the most complicated arrangement they have done.

Listen to what I say.... Four octaves progressively. :-) Then the next "Listen to what... " line is all in the same octave. Clever arranging by Adam Rupp
Adam Rupp has the widest vocal range i would say
I think Tim was trying to crumble the ice palace.
It's done by his coices
Reacting and analyzing are two very different things. I like reaction channels, analyzing, not so much :)
@@DanielEarnest ... You can find the video on the Home Free youtube channel.
Just watched both of them. Thanks for the suggestions. I love the live version and Chris’ reaction was very insightful.
according to Chris, for recordings they usually overdub Tim on the lead and bass, however live is when Chris will cover bass while Tim had lead.
Thanks, I’ll check into it. Merry Christmas!
@@DanielEarnest Awesome! Looking forward to it!
Austin does not do bottom. Chris
🤣
Also, incorrect, he does in My Maria
When he puts his hand and arm down like in Brothers in Arms and in this its going to be super low.
Adam Rupp arranged this. Favorite Xmas song by them . I don't normally like Christmas music but I like Home Free's! One thing. Pretty sure you were tapping the pause button..or something. Static bits that stopped when you actually paused.
Yah, that was my computer glitching. I had too many things up and running 😅
Chris said in a behind the scenes type video that sometimes they would record Tim on base even when Chris sang the part live
